    This is my second time.

This was our second summer stay in a row, and our second visit overall. We returned because the hospitality during our first stay was excellent. Perhaps the head chef has changed, but the food was a bit disappointing this time. The Onsen and the Room were comfortable and very nice. When I tried to drink tea in the Room in the morning, there were still used tea leaves left by the previous guest. (There is a welcome drink upon arrival, but staff do not prepare tea in the Room.) We left in a hurry, so I forgot to mention it to the staff.

    In a relaxing space

How many times has it been now? A holiday at Senjuan. From check-in on Saturday afternoon until the 10:00 check-out, it was pure bliss. Thanks to the kind and thoughtful hospitality of the staff, all my everyday fatigue melted away. The next day, I walked from Machiga-sawa on Mt. Tanigawa to Ichinokura-sawa, then took the ropeway and lift up to Tenjin Pass. Memories of climbing Mt. Tanigawa a few years ago came back to me. With such a relaxing break over the holiday, I was able to make the round trip to Ichinokura-sawa with ease. Thank you very much.

    Unfortunately.

On this trip, I stayed at an Onsen Accommodation for five days and spent my second night here. I chose Accommodations with solid pricing and high ratings (the other places I stayed were also repeat visits), but Senjuan ended up being the most disappointing. This may seem minor, but until I asked at checkout, my IKYU Diamond membership was not recognized. At every other Accommodation on this trip, staff casually mentioned Diamond member benefits or acknowledged my status at check-in or when entering the Room, so this was disappointing. The first staff member I spoke to seemed unfamiliar with IKYU Diamond membership and replied, “I don’t know—what is that?” I was told there would be filming on the day of my stay, perhaps because it has been featured on TV, but it felt like more priority was given to new guests than to repeat guests. In the bathroom vanity area, a towel basket was placed on top of the counter, but underneath it there appeared to be cleaning tools or dirty items left there as well, which was very disappointing. I’m not sure whether I would choose this as my next stay. For reference, I am a repeat guest. Disappointed.

    I was very satisfied!

I stay here around the same time every year. This year again, I was able to truly relax and feel refreshed. The staff were attentive, and everyone was wonderful. There are more foreign attendants now, but their Japanese is excellent, and I imagine they are well received by international guests as well. I use a wheelchair, and the considerate support provided was just right, making my stay even more comfortable. Having an Onsen in the Room that I can enjoy anytime is also fantastic. I would love to come back again for a relaxing stay. Thank you very much.

    Disappointing

Overall, the building and atmosphere are pleasant, but the fixtures and Facility show clear signs of age. The proprietress greeted me when I arrived, but she did not seem to be there when my mother and daughter checked in a little later. There were many staff members and they greeted us well, but the tea served by the person in charge of our Room was weak; the tea at the snack shop at the golf course we usually visit tastes better. I was also disappointed with dinner, including the main dish and the roast beef. I had seen it on TV and had high expectations, but it did not live up to them.

    Escape the everyday

I stayed from Friday to Saturday when it was uncertain whether two typhoons would hit the Kanto area directly. It was my first visit in several years, and the hospitality was as wonderful as ever. I brought my elderly mother for the first time, and she was truly impressed, saying she had never stayed anywhere like this before. The meals were delicious, but there was so much that we couldn’t finish everything, which I regret. Next time, I’d like to visit during the autumn foliage season.

    One of a kind

Above all, the location—this sense of openness is truly hard to find elsewhere. The hospitality and attention to detail in every aspect are outstanding. My personal hidden-gem Accommodation.

    The only disappointi...

The only disappointing part was the entrance to the dining area. Overall, since it’s an older building, there are various issues, but I was able to relax.

The shower button is positioned low.

I stayed here recently with my mother in her 70s. She usually has difficulty walking and uses a cane. (That’s why we chose this Accommodation, as all Rooms have private open-air baths.) Before using the open-air bath in the Room, she used the shower, but the control button was positioned too high. As she could barely stand while showering, she couldn’t adjust it and wasn’t able to wash properly. It was disappointing.

Will you be using it again?

My daughter told me this Accommodation is the best in the Kanto region, so we decided to visit. I knew it was hard to get a Reservation, so I booked in December and finally came this time. I’d also seen it on TV as a place even Matsuko wanted to visit, so I was really looking forward to it, but.... First, I was bothered by how dirty the floor mats were in the Shuttle Service vehicle. Next, the staff member who showed us to our Room got my name wrong. It left me feeling very upset—I’ve never experienced staff getting a guest’s name wrong before. That was the most unpleasant part. For such an expensive Accommodation, I felt I was treated terribly. The shower room before the open-air bath in the Room smelled bad, and I couldn’t use it. The Onsen water quality is very good, but even the mist sauna had an odor, so I didn’t use it either. Spending 100,000 yen and coming all this way only to have my name mistaken—and with the proprietress absent from midday—makes me wonder what’s going on. With no real competition like Hakone and after being featured on TV, perhaps this Accommodation has become a bit arrogant. It feels like such a wonderful Onsen has been ruined.

The Last Cherry Blossoms of the Year

I wanted to stay during cherry blossom season and expected the blossoms to come early this year because of the mild winter, but… Even 10 days before my stay, I heard they were still just buds. I kept wondering when they would bloom, and then I saw a bloom update on Instagram—six days later, they were in full bloom! Then I started worrying they might fall before I arrived. In the end, I was able to enjoy the deep pink blossoms right as they were starting to fall. It’s been three days since peak bloom. The cherry blossoms here move incredibly fast. Where I live in southern Kanto, it usually takes about 10 days from first bloom to full bloom, and about a week from full bloom to petals falling like snow. Staying in April can be nerve-racking—but if the timing works out, it’s an amazing experience.

A quiet Accommodation for a relaxing stay

I made a Reservation because I was attracted by the 1:00 PM check-in time. I imagine the Ryokan staff have a lot to do, including cleaning, but everyone greeted us with a smile and provided wonderful service. The Room was clean, and we had a comfortable stay. I was also very happy that the large public bath was close to our Room. We enjoyed both the in-room bath and the public bath many times! The meals were delicious, and there was so much food that we couldn’t finish it all—very satisfying. When we left, a staff member even wiped our car windows and saw us off until the very end. It’s a truly wonderful Ryokan.

One of the finest Accommodations in the Kanto region.

We stayed for two nights. First of all, every staff member consistently put guests first, making our stay truly comfortable. The Room was wonderful, with a thoughtfully designed interior that let us relax in an elegant atmosphere. The towels were incredibly fluffy—surprisingly so. The hot water felt great, and it’s easy to see why they have a dedicated Onsen attendant. The in-room Onsen has no separate taps for cold or hot water, which really shows the Accommodation’s confidence. The temperature was perfect. The cuisine was flawless in every way—flavor, ingredients, presentation, tableware, and the quality of the drinks. On the second night we were served completely different dishes, yet the quality remained just as high with absolutely no shortcuts. As expected from an Accommodation awarded Michelin recognition for two consecutive years. The proprietress’s attention to detail reaches every corner of the experience—to the point that I found myself unnecessarily wondering how they make it pay off. One small suggestion: at the spa you can receive a massage using a lotion developed by the proprietress, but since it is water-based (according to my wife), evaporative cooling can make your body feel cold. It would be nice to have an oil option as well. After checkout, having our luggage carried to the car is standard—but since it had just stopped raining, they even wiped down our car windows. That was a first for us and made us feel this Accommodation is on another level altogether. We are deeply grateful to everyone here. We will definitely return.

I was disappointed that the hot water wasn’t warm enough.

I stayed for one night this February. Given the high price, I had high expectations. The biggest disappointment was the large public bath: the water was lukewarm and didn’t warm me up at all. It felt like it was only around 37°C. The bath on the right side in particular was very poor both at night and the next morning—it was cold. In addition, the door to the bath area didn’t close properly, and a faucet in the bathing area was broken.

The weather was great on the day of our stay, and we were thrilled to see the magnificent Mt. Tanigawa. Every meal was thoughtfully prepared and truly enjoyable. This is a Hotel I’d like to stay at at least once a year.

Thank you so much for your help.

Bettei Senju-an always welcomes us warmly. This time, my husband had sprained his ankle, and they kindly went out of their way to drive us, which truly moved us. All of the staff are genuinely kind, and it is a special place where we feel happy and relaxed every time we visit.

An Accommodation you’ll want to return to again and again

This is my third stay, and each time I visit, it feels like I’ve “come home” to this special Ryokan. The building is full of character, and the spacious grounds have a timeless charm that reflects its history. You can truly feel the changing seasons, and simply taking a walk around the property is enough to leave you feeling refreshed and fulfilled. The large public bath was spotless and very comfortable to use. The meals are also excellent, and I look forward to them every time. Above all, I’m always moved by the warm hospitality and thoughtful care of the staff. It’s a Ryokan where you can relax completely during your stay and naturally find yourself thinking, “I want to come back again.” I would love to continue staying here in the future.

No matter what, it still feels old.

We stayed for one night in a Western-style Room. First of all, the staff’s service was outstanding—honestly the best I’ve experienced among Ryokan of this size. We’re truly grateful for that. That said, it felt like very little maintenance has been done, and everything seems aged. In particular, all the furniture in the Room had sharp corners and was placed where you easily bump into it—we both hit ourselves repeatedly. The stand under the bed used to place yukata was especially bad; we both ended up bleeding from our shins (me twice, my partner three times), and in the end we even covered it with a towel. The private bath in the Room had good Onsen water, but even after asking for an adjustment it was still lukewarm. The air conditioner was hard to set because the markings were too small. There were many sliding doors that no longer slid properly. In the large public bath area, the sauna heat shield panel wasn’t properly attached, and here too a sliding door wouldn’t open smoothly. As for meals, if you like classic Ryokan-style cuisine you may enjoy it, but for those who have frequent business dinners it might not feel special. Overall, because everyone was so kind, we left with mixed feelings on our way home. The Onsen quality is great—and above all, the people are wonderful. Even though it’s old, I feel that with a bit more day-to-day maintenance it could become much better. At the same time, neglecting upkeep is something I can relate to as well—so this ended up being a valuable lesson for me.

    Wonderful

Ever since it was featured on TV, I had wanted to stay here at least once, and I was really looking forward to this trip. These two days flew by, and it felt over in no time—I truly wished for a Multiple Night Stay! While the news reported severe weather and heavy snowfall elsewhere, here I was able to quietly and peacefully enjoy an extraordinary world of beautiful snowy scenery to the fullest. Dining in a private room allowed me to relax without worrying about others and savor each dish one by one. There were so many wonderful dishes. The bath felt slightly lukewarm, which meant I could soak for as long as I liked without getting overheated while gazing at the snowy landscape. Yet I still felt warmed through to the core and didn’t feel chilled afterward—perhaps that is part of what this Hotel aims for. I was also moved by being able to read everyone’s thoughts in the travel journal left by past guests. It was a deeply fulfilling, dreamlike Hotel stay. Thank you very much.

    一旅一縁

    Thank you very much.

This was our second visit. Last time, we came for my wife’s birthday, but it was a bit disappointing… This time, we visited for our wedding anniversary. We were worried about getting here because of what was said to be a once-in-a-decade cold wave, but since the heavy snow was only in certain areas, we made it safely. The Accommodation was covered in snow, and since we’re not used to it, we were really excited. However, even though it was a busy time of day, no one came out at first and we felt uneasy—but we managed to check in. Enjoying the completely different scenery from when we visited in summer last time—and with no snow falling—we had a great time strolling around the garden. We heard that there has been less snow than usual this year. It was more than enough for us, but still quite intimidating. When dinner time came, my wife pressed me about not having told them anything and wondered if they might celebrate again… I thought maybe this would be our last visit, but they surprised us with an anniversary celebration. My wife cheered up right away—what a relief. Thank you very much. The gently seasoned dishes were delicious. We also fully enjoyed the Onsen. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. We’d love to visit again in another season.

    A breathtaking silver-white winter wonderland.

It was snowing heavily, so we were worried about icy roads after exiting the Minakami Interchange, but there was no problem as water was flowing on the ground. We felt completely warmed both physically and mentally, making it very comfortable. This is a memorable ryokan where my late father brought me and my young daughters 25 years ago. The entire accommodation was warm, with spacious rooms, excellent hot springs, and wonderful meals. It was a perfectly accommodating stay. Thank you very much!

An amazing experience, the day flew by in no time.

Number of Guests: 4 (2 adults and children aged 4 and 2) Room Stayed: Special Room Positive Points: - The room is spacious. - The doors and walls are artistic and beautiful. - Two toilets and sinks prevent overlap. - My wife’s skin improved significantly after using the exclusive cosmetics provided in the special room, which made her very happy. - The dining room was incredibly spacious. - After the children finished their meals, plenty of toys were brought out, allowing adults to enjoy their meals at a relaxed pace. - The garden is large, providing space for children to explore or play with sleds multiple times in the snow—it looked like they had a great time. Negative Points: - While there were cute toothbrushes for kids, no toothpaste was provided. When we asked at the front desk, we were told it was out of stock. For families with children, having toothpaste available would be appreciated. - One staff member's attitude was disappointing. I requested a larger yukata due to my height but was told they would bring me a "big size." Using such language towards guests seems inappropriate. Additionally, when my wife called about an issue during dinner service, this staff member entered our room saying they "didn't understand what she meant." It felt as though she implied my wife wasn’t making sense—this left us feeling uncomfortable. A more appropriate response might have been something like “I’m sorry; could you please explain again?” Their explanations about the accommodation were also brief; while this may be their style, it didn’t feel suitable for guests staying in one of your top-tier rooms. Other staff members displayed perfect hospitality and manners—it’s unfortunate that this particular person stood out negatively. - A humidifying air purifier was placed near the bedside table; however, its buttons emitted bright lights that made it difficult to sleep when turned on. Relocating it or using models without bright lights would be appreciated. If these negative points can be addressed, everything else about this accommodation is perfect—I’d love to stay here again!

It was just as the reviews said...

The location and atmosphere of the accommodation were lovely, making it a candidate for our stay. However, after reading reviews that frequently mentioned the food was subpar, I hesitated but decided to experience it myself and booked a stay. As a result, the food indeed lacked flavor and depth, leaving us disappointed. For an accommodation costing nearly 100,000 yen for two people, such taste was truly disheartening. The dinner menu mentioned "prepared by all kitchen staff," which made me wonder if there was no head chef or someone responsible for overseeing the quality. Additionally, the valuables box in the public bath area was as large as an in-room safe but had small instructions that were hard to read. Ultimately, we chose not to use the public bath. While the building is impressive and the location excellent, we were let down by what’s inside this accommodation.

    The Best Time

Check-in at 1:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM allowed us to fully enjoy a truly wonderful time. The detailed art and various facilities within the Facility made it possible to spend relaxing moments without getting bored. For us, who rarely see snowy landscapes, the snow-covered nature was truly healing. All the staff were polite and had lovely smiles. Everything about this Ryokan is truly wonderful. For an even better experience, if only the hairdryer and amenities could be of slightly higher quality, it would be perfect! We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!
