A warm, multi-use “Potel” thoughtfully crafted with meticulous attention to Kyoto details.

Nice to meet you—we’re Potel. Not “Hotel,” but “Potel.” Located next to the lush Umekoji Park, Kyoto Aquarium, and the Kyoto Railway Museum, we offer an exceptionally convenient base for sightseeing. In our guest-only space, “Awai no Ma,” you’ll find a curated selection of books and records chosen especially for Potel, along with board games. Plus, with a café and restaurant connected directly to the park, and in the alleys of “Umekoji Yokocho,” there are plenty of places to unwind—like a nostalgic public bathhouse and a fermentation brewery where you can enjoy standing drinks. Whether you’re staying overnight or visiting for the day, spend a relaxing moment at Umekoji Potel Kyoto.

  • This was our second stay, following our visit in January. There are many Hotels in Kyoto I’d like to try, but when traveling with our 18-month-old child, we haven’t found any Hotel with better conditions than Potel. The playroom is spacious enough for a child to run around a bit, and it has a wooden ball pit and a picture-book corner. The breakfast menu is excellent and easy to share even for a baby in the later weaning stage. The Room size is great, the staff are kind to children, and the location—close to Kyoto Aquarium, the Kyoto Railway Museum, and Umekoji Park—is perfect. Everything is outstanding! On this stay, we were also happy that the alcohol service hours had been extended. We also appreciated being able to enjoy the breakfast buffet not only at the breakfast venue but in our Room as well, which made it easier to match our child’s eating pace.

  • We stayed on a weekday right after the start of summer vacation. There were a few children around, but during meals it was quiet, and we were able to enjoy dinner in a calm atmosphere. The service was attentive as well. With complimentary drinks available throughout the Hotel, an adjacent koji shop, and a bath styled like a retro Showa-era public bathhouse, it was such a fun place that we wanted to stay forever. I stayed with my elderly mother, and there wasn’t a single inconvenience; all the staff were kind, everything was clean, and the design sense was excellent. On our way home we said, “When we come to Kyoto, this is the place.” Unlike bland Hotels near the station, this is a Hotel that leaves you feeling warm inside.

More than just a place to stay: the Potel experience
■ Awai no Ma / 2nd–5th Floors

In the “Awai Lounge,” we offer themed spaces featuring Kyoto-related books, records, and board games. Browse for a book that catches your eye, lose yourself in music, or break the ice with fellow guests over a game. Why not step out of your Room and explore?

The wall-to-wall bookshelves are lined with a wide variety of titles selected by Atsushi Horibe, a book sommelier and the owner of Seikosha, a bookstore in Kyoto. Enjoy discovering books you wouldn’t normally pick up and getting so absorbed in reading that you lose track of time.

A curated selection of board games to suit your stay at Potel. From children to adults, and sometimes even across language barriers, enjoy fun moments playing with new friends and losing track of time.

The record shelves lined with countless album covers may feel nostalgic to some listeners, yet fresh and new to others. Why not choose a track, and lose yourself in the sound, the lyrics behind the song, and memories from that time? We offer a selection of records curated for each season.

A “PoMap,” themed “Guiding you to an unseen Kyoto” and created as a spin-off of Po Magazine under the supervision of Kyoto-based editor bank to, is available at the front desk. “PoMap, made with you” includes a space where guests can share recommended spots with one another.

2F: We offer soft drinks, beer, wine, highballs, chuhai, and light snacks. 3F: Enjoy hand-drip coffee made with carefully selected beans supervised by Hiroshi Makino of Coffeebase—ground fresh on site.

Right in front of you are Kyoto Tower, To-ji Temple, the mountains of Kyoto, the Shinkansen running below, and an endless sky. An open terrace where you can also enjoy the ever-changing scenery of the sky.

A space for families and groups to enjoy, from children to adults.

■Umekoji Yokocho

A relaxing spot where you can drop in anytime and experience traditional Japanese public bath culture.

Umekoji Sento Pote-yu
Umekoji Sento Pote-yu

In the Reiwa era, we’ve intentionally created a public bathhouse, “Poteyu.” In Kyoto—home to many bathhouses—you can experience traditional sento culture up close, including fixed shower stations and classic mural art that are becoming increasingly rare.

Umekoji Fermentation Lab

Discover new insights into alcohol and fermentation here. We also feature an on-site koji room (kojimuro) where koji—the key ingredient in fermented foods—is made.
