The Kamogawa area, steeped in culture and history

The Kamogawa area, steeped in culture and history

The Kamo River flooded repeatedly. To secure a stable waterway, the Takase River was excavated. In the early Edo period, this river connecting Kyoto and Osaka served as a transportation route. As timber began to be carried steadily, timber wholesalers and merchants lined the streets. The street running along the Takase River came to be known as “Kiyamachi,” developing into a lively district filled with restaurants, sake shops, and Ryokan. Cherry blossoms along the river reach full bloom in spring, and in summer you can enjoy riverside dining platforms set out on the banks where fireflies flit about—Kiyamachi is an area rich with seasonal charm throughout the year.
