A long-established Ryokan loved by great historical figures, designated an Important Cultural Property of Gunma Prefecture

Established in the 7th year of Genroku. This is Japan's oldest property architecture designated as an important cultural property, also famous as the model for the movie "Spirited Away." Enjoy four diverse onsen, including the retro-modern "Genroku Onsen" and the "Mori Onsen" that reflects the changing seasons.

  • I personally love the Genroku-no-Yu bath, though it may not be to everyone’s taste. The route to the annex can be hard to find, so it’s best to ask the front desk for clear directions first.

  • We visited at our child’s request, as this Onsen Accommodation is said to have inspired an anime. With 500 liters of hot water flowing every minute, the free-flowing hot spring bath was excellent, and the water stayed warm on the body for a long time. The Room is in an old building that retains the atmosphere of a traditional therapeutic spa, which is charming, but the heating wasn’t very effective, so it was cold. I wasn’t expecting much from the meals, but it would have been even better if the rice had been tastier. If we hadn’t chosen a Plan that included grilled river fish and sashimi, it might have felt a bit disappointing. We came to enjoy the Onsen and the ambiance, so overall we were satisfied.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Image

Built in the 4th year of Genroku, it is said to be the oldest wooden bathhouse property in Japan.

This Property, registered as a designated cultural property of Gunma Prefecture, is a rare Onsen inn that still retains the rich atmosphere of traditional hot spring architecture. Originally established during the Edo period as a typical therapeutic inn, Sekizenkan has expanded over time to accommodate the increasing number of guests. The main entrance of the original building is particularly striking, with its sturdy, thick beams and glossy pillars that remain as they were when first constructed. According to an ancient document from Kansei 12 (1800) passed down in the family, the size of the estate and the buildings match those of the present day. At that time, features such as the "Ojyodan," "Shitanoma," and "Shikidai," which could only be established in the homes of village leaders, were present. The thick pillars in the dirt floor area were finished with a kanna (plane), and the main pillar was crafted using a combination of chouna (adze) and kanna techniques. We hope you will take the opportunity to appreciate the buildings, documents, and the spirit and history carefully preserved by the Seki family over generations.

Originally, "Toji" referred to the use of "Yu" (medicinal hot water) for "Ji" (healing or treatment). It involved utilizing Onsen or medicinal baths for the purpose of treating illnesses or injuries. Later, people would bring their own food supplies, cook for themselves, and stay for an extended period to rest and recuperate in places called "Toji-ba." At our Property, while adapting to modern styles, we aim to provide an experience reminiscent of those traditional Toji-ba. Therefore, guests are generally expected to handle tasks such as setting up and putting away their futons on their own. However, due to the designation of our Property as an Important Cultural Property, self-catering is not permitted. Instead, we offer simple yet nourishing meals, suitable for daily consumption at a Toji inn, in a bento-style format.

"元禄の湯," built in Showa 5, features a luxurious and modern Western-style hall design for its time. The unique tiled floor is lined with five stone baths, without faucets, utilizing a direct flow from the tubs. Natural light streaming through the large arched windows reflects on the flowing water, evoking a sense of Taisho-era antique charm.
