A Ryokan perched on a hilltop surrounded by deep pine and bamboo groves—an escape soothed by tranquility and renowned hot springs.

Since its establishment in Genroku 7 (1694), "Sekizenkan" has welcomed guests for over 300 years, with a constant flow of visitors seeking Onsen therapy. The Property features three distinct buildings: the "Main Building," known as the oldest Onsen inn architecture in Japan, where the culture of Onsen therapy still thrives; the "Sansou," designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan for its excellent design and architectural techniques in the Momoyama style; and the "Kashoutei," located at the highest point in Shima Onsen, surrounded by the tranquility of ancient pine trees. At Sansou and Kashoutei, guests can savor exquisite kaiseki cuisine prepared by the head chef. Enjoy a variety of Onsen experiences, including the retro-modern "Genroku no Yu" and the seasonal "Mori no Yu."

  • It was the best trip. This was a wonderful Ryokan in every respect—Japan’s oldest bath, the cuisine, the service, and the Onsen. I stayed at Kashotei with in-room dining, and every dish of the carefully prepared kaiseki meal was outstanding. The staff were perfect—always smiling and considerate—and the tour was also educational, helping me learn about the hot-spring cure area and the history of the Accommodation. After enjoying the open-air bath, family bath, and Japan’s oldest bath, my skin and hair felt silky smooth. The lounge is great too. Please do visit.

  • Everyone who has stayed here probably feels the same, but we were satisfied with everything. My husband and I have been saying, “We want to come back.” In particular, we enjoyed a relaxing time in the lodge lounge “Izutsu” (if you stay at the lodge and Kashotei, enter using the PIN code provided). After returning home, we’re even considering whether we can recreate the same atmosphere in our living room (laughs). Next time, we’d like to stay for two nights or more.
