Fully enjoy Japan’s deepest naturally flowing open-air rock bath at this historic, Registered Tangible Cultural Property Accommodation.

A keyaki-wood Onsen Ryokan—beloved by Kenji Miyazawa and Torahiko Tamiya—crafted entirely from zelkova, a style that can no longer be recreated today. The historic Namari Onsen, first opened around 600 years ago, offers exceptionally high-quality waters recognized by selections such as “New Japan’s 100 Famous Hot Springs,” “Japan’s 100 Famous Hot Springs,” and “Japan’s Onsen Heritage.” Unusually even among well-known hot spring areas, the property has five source springs, and all four baths on site are luxurious 100% free-flowing natural spring water (kakenagashi). It is also known as “Namari-no-Yu,” featured in Kenji Miyazawa’s masterpiece *The Bears of Nametoko Mountain*, making this a special Accommodation where the story’s world and a historic Onsen come together. In 2025, the main building—of outstanding historical value—was designated a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture as well. In particular, we highly recommend the 100% natural self-springing rock bath “Hakuen-no-Yu,” said to be Japan’s deepest—a superb bath that warms you through to your core.

  • We stayed here as a family of four. The baths are simply outstanding. There are so many different baths that, unless you plan carefully, you won’t be able to try them all in just one night and two days—and every one of them is enjoyable. Above all, the “Shirozaru-no-Yu,” designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, is exceptionally wonderful! If you love Onsen, I think it’s something you should experience at least once. The age of the building can’t really be helped, but since it’s such a great Accommodation, I feel they could put a bit more effort into cleaning.Even so, the baths were truly exceptional.

  • This was our first stay as a couple. We warmed up in the Onsen and enjoyed the delicious meals. The staff were kind, and the Accommodation Fee was reasonable, so we were very satisfied. We would love to visit again.

Refresh in a 1.25 m deep standing cold bath—matching the average depth of our signature natural spring rock bath, “Hakuen-no-Yu,” known as Japan’s deepest naturally flowing rock bath—and relax outdoors while taking in views of the Toyosawa River and Shiraito Falls.

Kenji Miyazawa
The hot spring Accommodation "Fujisan Ryokan," beloved by and featured in the works of literary masters Kenji Miyazawa and Torahiko Tamiya.

Kenji Miyazawa, author of novels such as *Night on the Galactic Railroad* and *The Restaurant of Many Orders*, was related to our family and often visited from a young age. In his fairy tale *The Bears of Nametoko Mountain*, he also writes: “It eases stomach pain and heals wounds too—Lead Bath…” There are other Accommodations said to have been loved by Kenji Miyazawa, but ours is the only one that appears in his work. Fujisan Ryokan was also the setting for Torahiko Tamiya’s novel *Gin Shinju (Double Suicide in Silver)*. He stayed for a little over a month in Room No. 20 on the 3rd floor above the entrance and wrote the novel there. (Image: Rasu Chijin Kyokai)

The History of Namari Onsen

About 600 years ago, it is said that the ancestors of the Fujii family, founders of our inn, discovered this Onsen at the foot of Mt. Takakura when they saw a white monkey emerging from a cave and healing wounds on its hands and feet in a spring bubbling up at the base of a katsura tree. Realizing it was an Onsen source, they built a simple hut around 1443 and opened it as a natural bath for their family. Later, in 1786, they built a rowhouse as a public bathhouse—marking the beginning of our Ryokan. Our main building was constructed from the late Meiji period to the early Taisho period, and throughout its long history has continued to welcome many guests seeking therapeutic bathing. In 2025, its outstanding historical value was recognized with designation as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and it still preserves its beautiful traditional architecture today.
