NIPPONIA HOTEL Hakodate Port Town

The “Hakodate City Urban Landscape Award” is a program that honors buildings and initiatives that should be preserved for the future, helping to create historic streetscapes and outstanding urban scenery. Standing by Hakodate Port—opened in 1859 as one of Japan’s first international trade ports alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki—is a 100-year-old red-brick warehouse. With the help of local artisans and creators, we restored the building while preserving the character of the red brick, so guests can once again feel the era when it originally shone. Before renovation, the exterior walls were covered in mortar, leaving little trace of the red brick. To pass this rare building on to future generations, we carefully removed only the surface layer of mortar and revived its original appearance. This effort was recognized not only for improving the Bay Area landscape but also for enhancing and extending the area’s value beyond its boundaries, leading to our receipt of the 26th Hakodate City Urban Landscape Award. As an iconic Hotel in Hakodate that makes use of historic resources, we aim to remain loved by both locals and visitors while helping preserve this architecture—and Hakodate’s unique culture—for generations to come.

The Red Brick Warehouses are a historically valuable landmark. Although located in the heart of a tourist area, they had been left unused for many years, and using an old building carried significant risk—so there were initially plans to demolish them and build anew. However, with the aim of blending into the surrounding environment, the project succeeded in making use of existing resources by preserving the warehouses and carefully designing the interiors. This approach was recognized for its design excellence and received an iF Design Award. By embracing a design that makes use of historic assets, NIPPONIA HOTEL Hakodate Minatomachi aims not only to harmonize with its surroundings but also to foster affection among local residents—so it will continue to be loved and preserved for future generations.
