This was my second stay since 2018. As always, every dish at dinner was delicious, and I was very satisfied. The hospitality was also wonderful, and I truly appreciated the advice for visiting Matsumoto Castle the next day. Thanks to your guidance, we were able to sightsee smoothly without feeling the heat too much.If I have the opportunity again, I would love to stay with you in a different season.Thank you very much!
たか2 8/6/2026It was my first visit to Sugimoto in a while. The facility and rooms remain beautifully maintained. A calming, classic atmosphere. Delicious soba noodles. Everything was just as it always is. Consistency is something rare and precious, but you can always find it at Sugimoto, which I deeply appreciate. I look forward to staying again. Thank you very much!

Introduction of the Accommodation

The appeal of Ryokan Sugimoto lies not in flashy productions or luxury, but in a calm stay where sound, space, Onsen waters, cuisine, and the passing of time gently blend into one. Inside the Ryokan, you are surrounded by folk crafts, with quiet music drifting through the air; soft Onsen waters from our on-site natural spring; and seasonal dishes that reflect the best of Shinshu. Each element complements the others without overpowering them, naturally guiding both mind and body back to balance. Rather than adding more, it is about letting go of what is unnecessary. Ryokan Sugimoto is an Onsen Accommodation for adults—gently restoring senses tired by everyday life and leaving a deep, lingering sense of calm.

In the year of the Meiji Restoration, when this Onsen town began its new chapter as a place for the public, Ryokan Sugimoto was founded here. As one of the Accommodations with the longest history in Utsukushigahara Onsen Village, it has been family-run ever since, with each generation carrying on its tradition. Today, the eighth-generation proprietor continues to care for this Ryokan. In the Meiji era, after Gotenyu was destroyed by fire, local Onsen Ryokan operators formed the “Yamabe Onsen Ryokan Cooperative Association,” and a modern Western-style Facility called “Yamabe Hotel” was built on the former site of Gotenyu. With changing times, Yamabe Hotel eventually disappeared. Part of that former site later became home to what is now Ryokan Sugimoto’s new wing. Inside, Matsumoto Mingei furniture and timeworn furnishings quietly bring warmth and character to every corner. Music, Onsen bathing, and space come together as one to gently calm and restore your mind. Rather than competing in extravagance, we invite you to feel—through your stay—the time and culture this land has carried forward. This is the unchanging hospitality that Ryokan Sugimoto has always cherished.

At Ryokan Sugimoto, we serve 100% buckwheat soba made without any binders. Enjoy the rich aroma of freshly made buckwheat flour and a simple yet robust flavor that deepens with every bite. If you wish, you can also watch the soba being made up close and enjoy a relaxed moment with the owner’s lighthearted stories. Please savor this honest, deeply satisfying bowl—crafted by the local climate and careful handwork.

A Historic Hot Spring Filled with Natural Source Water
The Onsen at Ryokan Sugimoto is fed by a private on-site hot spring source, delivering an abundant flow of 29.3 liters per minute. Enjoy the indoor bath crafted from Kiso’s five prized woods, and the open-air bath paved with bluestone. Each offers a distinct atmosphere, with silky-smooth water and soothing warmth that reaches deep into your body. A renowned hot spring with a long history, cherished through generations. Surrounded by tranquility, take your time and unwind in both body and mind.

Sugimoto-style Tsukamano Kaiseki, showcasing the seasonal flavors of Shinshu
At Ryokan Sugimoto, we serve “Tsukamano Kaiseki” as the centerpiece of dinner, featuring local ingredients unique to this region—seasonal vegetables from the Shinshu mountain villages, char, Shinshu salmon, horse meat, and more—prepared simply to bring out their natural flavors without unnecessary embellishment. From appetizers and signature specialties to seasonal kama-meshi rice, each course offers a moment to savor Shinshu’s climate and the changing seasons with all five senses. In the morning, begin your day quietly with a gentle breakfast that comforts you as you wake—Shinshu apple juice, yudofu (simmered tofu), hoba miso, grilled fish, and more.
