A modern guesthouse that blends seamlessly into Obuse, also known as the “Town of Hokusai.”

Opened on September 2, 2007. Named “Masuichi Kyakuden” from the owner’s wish: “We would have loved to welcome you into our own home…”. Designed by architect John Morford—who also designed “Kurabu” and the main store of Masuichi Ichimura Sake Brewery—this Accommodation is his vision of where he would want to stay when visiting Obuse. Centered around three earthen storehouses relocated from a long-established sugar wholesaler in Nagano, it comprises seven wooden buildings, with interiors fully furnished in Western style.

  • Although it is not an Onsen, we were able to relax and rest in a calm atmosphere. The breakfast was also delicious, and we were very satisfied. Chilled drinks in the refrigerator are also free of charge.

Long ago, the tatami room of the Masuichi family home—where they welcomed guests from afar (marebito)—was known as the “Guest Hall.” In rural towns like Obuse, a visitor’s arrival was a special, festive occasion not only for the host but also for family members and staff. It was a rare chance for intellectual exchange and an important opportunity to gather news and information. Masuichi Guest Hall was created from a desire to reimagine this tradition in a modern way and revive a place of connection in Obuse. Our services are grounded in the spirit of “We would welcome you to stay in our own home, if we could…” Please enjoy the town of Obuse and its chestnut orchards as if they were your own garden.

Pass through a corridor of light and shadow woven by earthen walls, roof tiles, and the rippling water’s surface, and arrive at a private space filled with tranquility. All 12 guest rooms, set within traditional storehouses once used by an old-established wholesaler, are Western-style rooms consisting of a living area and beds.

Meals at Masuichi Kyakuden are served at restaurants connected by the garden and pathways. “Kasa Furo” offers breakfast featuring freshly harvested vegetables and local Shinshu ingredients. “Obusedo Main Store” serves Japanese cuisine inspired by the spirit of tea kaiseki.
