Relax in the architectural beauty designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and the soothing waters of Yudanaka Onsen.

For 200 years since its founding, Yorozuya has been cherished by generations of guests. With an Onsen flow rate of 253 liters per minute—the largest in Yudanaka Onsen—and three private hot spring sources, it offers an exceptional bathing experience. Among them, the grand bathhouse “Momoyama Bath” is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, featuring a magnificent all-wood temple-style structure. Enjoy the liberating feeling of this vast space that feels like stepping back in time. For dinner, we offer kaiseki cuisine showcasing seasonal delicacies from Northern Shinshu in three different course grades. Savor local specialties such as Shinshu beef raised on apples, river fish, and handmade soba noodles. Why not create unforgettable memories at Yorozuya, where you can truly feel the warmth of traditional hospitality shaped by centuries of history?

  • We visited to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. We had long admired Yorozuya, and from the moment we stepped into the entrance, we were amazed by the magnificent coffered ceiling. The lion folding screen and furnishings were also wonderful—like being in a museum. While listening to jazz, we were served matcha tea, and it was truly a blissful time. Our Room was spacious as well. We then went to our main destination: the Momoyama Bath, a designated cultural property. All we could say was “Wow”—it was an incredible bath. The steam bath and outdoor bath far exceeded our imagination and felt like works of art. The Shinonome Bath was also very nice. And then dinner: the proprietress’s handwritten menu had so much character and was beautiful—she is also a talented artist. The food was delicious, and my husband and I were deeply moved by the congratulatory message written with chocolate on the dessert plate. Thank you so much for the warm hospitality from all of the staff. The next day, we were able to tour the Momoyama Bath again, take photos, and listen to an explanation—it was truly wonderful. The shared bath outside was also great. It became an unforgettable trip, and we would love to visit again. We’re experiencing serious “Yorozuya loss” now...

  • This was my first visit to Yudanaka Onsen, and I was impressed by the beautiful Momoyama-style architecture of the Momoyama Bath. The meals were also excellent, using a variety of local ingredients, and it was especially nice that the staff carefully explained the ingredients and cooking methods. Despite being an older Accommodation, I appreciated having the option of a Japanese-Western style room (as I get older, sleeping on futons is difficult for me). I also visited Yudanaka Station and noticed there is an Onsen next to the station, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to go. It would have been helpful to have a map highlighting points of interest and shops in the Onsen town. In addition to the Momoyama Bath guide, it might be nice to offer guided explanations for the entire Onsen town as well (even for an additional fee).

Introduction of the Accommodation

A renowned hot spring Accommodation in Shinano Province, cherished by notable figures since the Kansei era.

During the Edo period, Yudanaka flourished not only as a therapeutic hot-spring retreat for the Matsushiro Domain, but also—along with the development of the Hokkoku Kaido—as a renowned hot spring where pilgrims could relax after visiting Zenkoji Temple. In the Bunka and Bunsei eras, the haiku poet Kobayashi Issa, who dearly loved Yudanaka, wrote in his work *Tanakagawara no Ki*: “Though it lies in mountain shade, where there are hot springs there is always the sound of music; even an aging heart feels lightened—one might think it is like entering a hermit’s cave.” He vividly described the lively atmosphere of those days.

Our Ryokan’s history dates back to the Kansei era of the Edo period (1789–1801). Historical documents record that at the time, the Hongo-gumi (now Oyu-gumi) formed the core of the innkeepers’ guild, with members working together to support and develop lodging services. In the Meiji period, advances in transportation brought an increase in visitors seeking therapeutic hot-spring stays. Until then, most guests came from nearby areas; however, after the Shinetsu Line opened in Meiji 26 (1893), horse-drawn carriages, rickshaws, and shared motor vehicles from Toyono Station made it easier for many guests from Tokyo and across the Kanto region to visit. In particular, a horse-drawn carriage known as the “Tote Basha,” which ran through town as a trumpet sounded “tote, tote,” became a beloved local sight. After Nagano Electric Railway began operating between Nagano and Yudanaka in Showa 2 (1927), guests began arriving from an even wider area. From Showa 6 to 7 (1931–1932), composer Shinpei Nakayama (1888–1952) and poet Yaso Saijo (1892–1970) visited our Ryokan while creating “Yudanaka Kouta.” After World War II, on May 25, Showa 23 (1948), we reorganized as a limited company. Our proprietor Hiroshi Ono set out to build a new large bath inspired by Tenpyo Bath at Arai Ryokan in Shuzenji—an ambitious project bringing together the finest elements of Azuchi–Momoyama-period temple architecture. Designed by Kiyoshi Okitsu—known for works such as Nichigeki and Zenkoji’s ossuary—and built under master carpenter Masakazu Ichikawa of our local community, renowned for shrine-and-temple construction, work began in early Showa 26 (1951). After about three years of construction, our “Momoyama Bath” was completed in September Showa 28 (1953).
