Limited to 5 groups per day. Relax in rooms with private open-air hot springs and enjoy the culture and natural beauty of Shinshu.

A traditional Sukiya-style accommodation with 5 rooms, each featuring a private open-air bath, opening on March 1, 2024. Here, you can relax to your heart's content. As an annex of the historic "Shinshu Yudanaka Onsen Yorozuya," which has been welcoming guests since the Edo Kansei era, this new accommodation will be reborn on March 1, 2024. The previous Matsusho-so was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003 and cherished by many until it was lost to fire in 2021. Despite this loss, with encouragement from numerous supporters, we are proud to announce its revival as the new "Matsusho-so" on March 1, 2024. The building incorporates design elements of the original Matsusho-so while embracing traditional Sukiya architecture that harmonizes with nature. Each room features a private open-air bath overlooking a small garden where guests can enjoy seasonal landscapes. We have created a space that feels "new yet somehow nostalgic." We look forward to welcoming you warmly at this new location. Selected for the Michelin Key Hotel Selection 2025: "1 MICHELIN Key 2025."

  • We visited to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday. It was a long drive from Yokohama to Nagano, but this was a wonderful Accommodation that truly made us glad we came. The in-room open-air bath was a little hot and needed some adjustment, but it was clean, spacious, and free of insects. The shampoo and conditioner also left our hair smooth and silky.(Some Ryokan at this level still leave your hair feeling rough.)All the staff who welcomed us were smiling, and during dinner the head chef served the main dish right at our table.Everything was delicious—made with local ingredients and carefully prepared with great attention to detail. On our way out, they even opened the souvenir shop in the main building earlier for us, so I was happy to be able to buy the souvenirs I wanted. My parents were very pleased as well, so we would love to visit again while they are still healthy.

  • This time, we stayed at an Onsen Accommodation for five days. Even among higher-priced and highly rated Accommodations, there were some that were very disappointing, but Shoraiso was extremely satisfying. This was a repeat stay, and it is an Accommodation we would like to visit again. Thank you for your continued support.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Exterior

Here, relax and enjoy to your heart's content.

During the Kansei era, the sound of wind passing through the trees, the enjoyment of hot spring water, and the elegant sound of tea being prepared inspired the name "Shorai." Over 200 years later, it has been reborn for the third time as a traditional Ryokan of the authentic Shinshu Yudanaka Onsen Yorozuya, welcoming up to five groups per day.

Exterior
A New Yet Timeless Space

A hot spring accommodation with a history dating back to the Edo Kansei era. Over 200 years later, the fifth-generation owner built "Shoraiso" in 1939. The "Momoyama Bath," inspired by the temple architecture of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, was completed in 1953 with the craftsmanship of master carpenters. In 2003, both "Shoraiso" and "Momoyama Bath" were designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties and cherished by many until February 11, 2021, when Shoraiso was tragically lost to fire. Thanks to the support of countless individuals after this incident, Shoraiso has been reborn in a new form. As part of its revival, we adopted a symbolic skylight window from the original Shoraiso as our logo mark. This iconic window has also been faithfully recreated at the entrance of the new Shoraiso, watching over all who spend time within its space.

Onsen

Immerse Yourself in the Elegance of History with the Momoyama Bath

Designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2003, "Yudanaka Onsen" is nestled in the serene mountains of Okushinano. Its origins date back approximately 1,350 years when it was discovered by the monk Chiyu, who named it "Yokarei," meaning longevity and long life. Renowned as a hot spring for health and vitality, it has been cherished for its healing properties and spiritual benefits by many over the centuries, including the Sanada clan of Matsushiro Domain, haiku poet Kobayashi Issa, and Dr. Jun Matsumoto, the first Surgeon General of the Japanese Army.

Rooms

A space featuring five private open-air baths, recreated with traditional designs.

Each room features a garden where you can enjoy the breeze and light of Shinshu, a private open-air Onsen with natural hot spring water, and a relaxing space that seamlessly blends "indoors" and "outdoors." Crafted with traditional techniques of master carpenters and authentic materials, the design reflects the beauty of skilled craftsmanship. Additionally, some rooms recreate the design elements of the former Shoraiso, preserving its nostalgic charm and welcoming you with a heartfelt "Welcome back."
