The young proprietress is absolutely wonderful.
I booked a Room with a private open-air bath, and also visited the large public bath. Both were very clean, and the outdoor bath in the public area had excellent insect and sun protection. Since this is a sulfur hot spring, the outdoor bath is recommended for anyone who doesn’t like the smell of sulfur. The in-room open-air bath didn’t feel exposed from outside; it was more like a semi-open-air bath. I could still feel the breeze and relax comfortably. The Room was near the free footbath area, so during events we could even hear them from our Room—truly a prime spot. Dinner featured local vegetables and meat and was delicious. The original cocktails were very easy to drink, so be careful not to overdo it. The young proprietress greeted us at dinner, told us about Arukuma Ale at the shop, and greeted us again in the morning—always cheerful and welcoming. Five stars for such a wonderful young proprietress.

A Passionate Night of Taiko Drums and Mikoshi in Kamuriki, Featuring the Summer Mikoshi Challenge to Kamuriki Taiko
I had long been hoping to return, and made a Reservation when the dates and availability finally lined up. Later, the Accommodation sent a letter and a festival flyer explaining that the parking lot would be unavailable due to the Onsen town’s summer festival, and that we would be directed to temporary parking. The whole area was crowded with people and cars, but thanks to a clear map and courteous on-site guidance, we arrived without any trouble. The Hotel is old, but has been renovated and is very clean. The staff were efficient and kind. The bath in the Room was especially charming: a rustic Onsen-style semi-open-air bath has been added on the top-floor rooftop terrace, full of atmosphere. The water temperature stayed comfortable throughout. The main street in front of the Hotel was closed to traffic for food stalls, and the Hotel’s parking area served as festival headquarters—so we could even hear drums and dance music from our Room. Dinner was French cuisine with seasonal flair—creative, skillful, and truly delicious. After dark, a powerful mikoshi procession arrived led by lantern bearers. The energetic calls of the carriers continued alongside rhythmic taiko drumming; locals and guests gathered in front of the Hotel, making it an unforgettable night. After breakfast, while I enjoyed coffee in the lobby, they brought our car around to the entrance for us.

I stayed in a room advertised as having an open-air bath, but it was not open-air. Overall, it felt like a slightly larger Business Hotel with meals included, and I could not really evaluate the service.

The Onsen has excellent water quality.
I was disappointed with the Room and the meals. I didn’t feel any enjoyment in staying at the Accommodation.

The refrigerator is not powered on.
1) The refrigerator was not turned on; even after turning it on, it was still not cold the next day, so it did not function as a refrigerator. 2) There were no towels in the bathroom. 3) There were too few amenities in the Room. 4) The view from the balcony was disappointing. 5) The entrance area is narrow, and slippers get in the way, making it difficult to open and close the door.

It was a fun trip.
The Hotel is known for being family-friendly, so we stayed for one night and requested a children’s meal. Dinner was more than my 3-year-old could finish, so we left some, but there were many thoughtful touches that made our child happy and really helped us. Breakfast was the same menu as the adults’. It was also very convenient that we could use the private family bath without a Reservation. Everyone at the Hotel was truly cheerful and very kind to both children and adults! It was our first time visiting this Onsen town, and it had a wonderful retro Showa-era feel, so next time I’d like to take more time to stroll around. If I had to mention anything, it would be helpful if check-out were at least 11:00, and I would have liked more meat even if it cost more—but overall it was a fantastic trip. Thank you very much.

Close, but no prize.
The Onsen is wonderful. The water quality, temperature, scent, and feel on the skin—truly a famous hot spring. The in-room open-air bath was also lovely, even though there’s zero view. However, what was disappointing was the meals. If you’ll allow me to say so: We chose the Shinshu beef steak Plan, but it was obviously cost-cutting—three very thin slices of meat. I’ll say it again because it matters: three thin slices. It made me think, “Is this what I’m paying extra for?” The photos in the Review are misleading (lol). The sashimi was also just two kinds, one slice each. It’s not that it tasted bad—but it’s gone in two bites. And then there was the unexpected bamboo shoot overload. For some reason, bamboo shoot clear soup came out early on, and later something like a whole roasted bamboo shoot appeared (with only a small edible portion). All of the appetizers were cold. And I honestly couldn’t tell what I was eating. When rice was served at the end, there was no tea. What they left nearby was a Showa-era beer glass and a pitcher with an awkward amount of water in it. (Hot tea finally arrived together with a jelly dessert that felt like an old-fashioned snack.) In the end, I didn’t feel full. Breakfast was the same—an assortment of items I could easily prepare at home myself. Nothing stood out; it felt like an ordinary homemade breakfast. For some reason only the miso soup is warmed on a small burner, but it heats up so slowly that you’re left with just miso soup at the very end—which is depressing. Breakfast is important at a Ryokan—you want something special and out of the ordinary. I understand things are tough, but you can’t let guests see right through your cost-cutting. One last thing: when they laid out our futons, they placed the table right in front of—and blocking—the door to access the in-room open-air bath, forcing us to step over it to get to the bath. That layout ignores basic flow and convenience. I’ve said quite a lot—but because the Onsen is so wonderful overall, I’m very satisfied as a whole. As this town grows quieter and declines over time, I truly hope you can hang in there and bring more life back to it—I sincerely wish you all success.

The Quality of the Onsen Water in Kamiyamada Onsen
Kamiyamada Onsen offers excellent water quality, with most Ryokan and public bathhouses in town featuring free-flowing hot spring water. Among them, the Onsen at this Hotel was the best. The newly renovated large public bath was very clean, and its free-flow system was state-of-the-art, so the water always felt fresh. If possible, I would love to stay for several nights.

Wonderful concierge ...
Wonderful concierge service Thanks to the attentive support of the young proprietress, the manager, and a junior attendant (sorry for naming you on my own), we were able to smoothly visit the cherry blossoms (Togura-juku Kitty Park), Anzu no Sato, and Zenkoji Temple, then arrive at our next stay in Shirohone Onsen in time to relax in the open-air bath before dark. The meals were also satisfying (even for my sister-in-law and her husband, both over 80).

I’d recommend it to all kinds of travelers!
This was our first time staying here. The Room was spacious, and the in-room Onsen bath was also large and roomy. It was a true free-flowing hot spring straight from the source, and the bath was wonderful. Being able to soak in a free-flowing hot spring whenever we wanted, without any hesitation, was the best! The meals were delicious as well, but we’re a small-appetite family and couldn’t finish everything, so we’re sorry we left some. We had a very comfortable stay.

The Onsen was very relaxing, but the meals (Japanese cuisine) were disappointing for both dinner and breakfast. The sukiyaki and steak were good, but I couldn’t enjoy much of anything else. It was especially disappointing because the Onsen was so nice.

About Dinner Service
The free-flowing Onsen I valued most was very satisfying in both water quality and temperature. The building is old, but parts have been renovated, and it felt clean thanks to thorough housekeeping. However, I was disappointed with the dinner service. Partway through the meal, the dishes started coming out more and more slowly, and even after 1 hour and 20 minutes from the start of dinner, the fried items still hadn’t arrived. I asked that everything remaining—including the final rice dish—be brought out at once. After that, I was also puzzled when dessert was served first for some reason and I was asked to sign the bill at that time. The food itself was carefully prepared dish by dish and delicious, which made it all the more disappointing. I liked Kamiyamada’s Onsen very much and would like to visit again if I have the chance. I hope for improvements going forward.

It was a wonderful Accommodation.
I don’t usually write a Review, but I was so moved that I’m posting this as a personal note as well. First of all, I was impressed by the food. Starting with the small dishes, every course item was truly delicious. The small dishes in particular featured many local specialties I had never tried before, and each one was so good that it genuinely moved me. I normally work at a Hotel in Tokyo and often have opportunities to enjoy great food, but this made me think, “I wish you would open a restaurant in Tokyo.” I even found myself looking up what kind of person the head chef might be. The bath seemed to have been recently renovated, and the beautiful stained glass with a Taisho-Romantic feel, along with the illuminated space, was stunning. I was able to spend a relaxing time there. I was also surprised by how clean the washbasin area was. At any Hotel, I assumed you’d usually find at least some hair here and there, but I didn’t see any at all. It must be cleaned frequently—it was truly spotless and very pleasant to use. Everyone at the Accommodation was warm and friendly. When I contacted them to say my arrival might be late, they kindly accommodated me, and someone even came out to guide me to the parking lot. The staff in the dining area greeted us with smiles throughout as well—it was an extremely comfortable experience. It made me feel that it’s because of this kind of hospitality that this Accommodation has continued to be loved for so long. I would definitely like to visit again.

It’s always amazing, no matter when you go!
Thank you again for a wonderful stay. Room: We stayed in a Deluxe Twin Room. It was very spacious and comfortable, and the TV is large. The toilet has a washlet. All lighting can be controlled from the bed. A humidifier in winter would be a nice touch. Amenities are reasonably well provided. Dining: A French course meal. Creative, delicious French cuisine using seasonal ingredients and local vegetables. You can really feel the chef’s passion in every dish—I’d want to come back every month just for dinner. Breakfast feels less impressive compared with dinner; it would be even better if there were more Western-style options. The French cuisine seems popular locally as well, so it can be hard to make a Reservation—if there’s availability, I recommend booking immediately. Baths: Among the Onsen Hotels in Kamiyamada Onsen, this is easily one of the top three. Depending on the day, the water varies in color—milky white or green—and is full of mineral deposits with a pleasant sulfur scent. The water is excellent, and you can also drink it, which is fantastic. Staff: Everyone was very kind. Overall: The Hotel has been renovated throughout, keeping Rooms, baths, and other areas clean and updated. Management provides strong guidance to all staff (including international staff). Going forward, I hope to see improvements to breakfast that further set it apart from other Hotels.

The sulfur hot spring is excellent.
This was my second visit to Kamiyamada Onsen. I came again for therapeutic bathing. It was my first time staying at this Accommodation, and while the building has a sense of history overall, the large public bath has been renovated and was clean and pleasant. The heating in the Room worked so well it was almost too warm. I was impressed by how powerful the heating is in colder regions. All of the staff were friendly, and I had a wonderful stay from start to finish. I’m truly grateful. It was a very cold day with light snow flurries, so this trip reminded me once again how great Onsen can be. I also used the in-room Onsen many times, but as others have mentioned, it felt like it might be visible from outside. I think adding better privacy screening would make guests feel more at ease. Since the open-air bath in the Room faces the street, late-night voices from drunk passersby are probably just part of the experience. As for meals, since the Accommodation Fee is reasonable I didn’t have high expectations… but I’d be happy if there were a few more drink options. That said, the “okoge rice porridge” at breakfast was amazing—I liked it so much I wanted seconds. In any case, what’s best of all is the quality of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen’s hot spring water itself, so I hope the whole town continues to build on that appeal! I’ll be recommending it to people around me as well. Thank you very much for your hospitality—I’d love to visit again.

Excellent
This was my first time enjoying a French cuisine course, and it was incredibly delicious and delicate. The vegetables were very fresh, and of course, the other ingredients (meat and fresh fish) were also fresh and tasty. The room was a renovated twin-bed room, which was excellent. The heating facility worked perfectly, so it wasn’t cold at all. The recently renovated Onsen was very clean, with the best-quality hot spring water in Kamiyamada Onsen—truly exceptional. You can even drink the hot spring water, and 24-hour bathing is available, which is great. I would love to visit again! Additionally, I could see that the proprietress and staff were very kind and hardworking. The French cuisine chef and proprietress especially paid great attention to their guests' needs. Thank you very much!

I had a fun and comfortable stay.
Dinner was enjoyed at "Lapis Lazuli" with French cuisine, and as always, everything including the taste, ambiance, and chatting with the chef was exceptional. The large public bath and the Room's open-air bath are also extremely comfortable.

The Kamiyamada Onsen town and the Hotel have a Showa retro vibe, which might not suit everyone's taste, but the quality of the Onsen water is truly excellent. The steak was incredibly delicious. Thank you for your hospitality.

We hope to become a great accommodation.
The nearest station is Togura Station on the local Shinano Railway line. Since train services are infrequent, it would have been nice if the shuttle service could align with the train schedule. However, when I requested a specific time, I was told to take the next train instead, which was a bit disappointing. The room was on the same floor as the front desk (1st floor), but oddly required going up and down stairs to access it. It would have been helpful if there were a service to carry suitcases to the room, but unfortunately, no such service was available. On a positive note, being on the 1st floor meant that my room was close to the private open-air bath. This allowed me to check its availability and use it immediately when vacant—a definite advantage. There didn’t seem to be many people using these baths during my stay, so they were almost always available whenever I wanted them. As for meals, they were served by what seemed like a new Nepalese staff member who provided little explanation about each dish. Considering that these dishes were likely crafted with great care and creativity by the head chef, it would have been better if someone more knowledgeable had handled this role and explained them properly. There was an even more unfortunate incident regarding meal service; however, since this involved a new Nepalese staff member who had already been reassigned by breakfast time the next day, I decided not to dwell on it further. That said, there were bigger issues with how one of their Japanese kitchen staff members handled things during my stay. At checkout during shuttle service back to Togura Station—perhaps due to concerns over potential complaints—a young proprietress-like figure appeared for observation but did not offer any greeting or acknowledgment. One positive note at checkout: when we realized we might catch an earlier train than planned due to having extra time before departure—they quickly adjusted their schedule for us without hesitation—showing flexibility in accommodating guests' needs based around transportation timing. Despite various challenges faced throughout experience here—it became clear management genuinely strives hard towards improving operations wherever possible whenever recognizing areas needing attention actively working toward becoming better accommodation overall gradually improving daily basis!

Satisfied with both the bath and meals.
The public bath was newly renovated and very clean. Although I was initially worried about bears in the open-air bath, it was securely enclosed, allowing me to relax and enjoy it. The hairdryers were the latest models, with four different types available to try, which was a nice touch. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and filling. The Room was spacious and comfortable for a relaxing stay. It would have been even better if coffee had been available. At night, it snowed, and by morning there was a light layer of snow on the ground and cars. I was touched to see Hotel staff clearing the snow off cars from my window in the morning.

The food and Onsen were truly excellent. I will definitely become a repeat guest. The staff were very pleasant and everything felt so refreshing. During this season, we could fully enjoy the autumn leaves, making it the perfect girls' trip. We visited Zenkoji Temple and experienced stained glass making, which made for a fulfilling three days.

Classic and Timeless!
A traditional Onsen accommodation that lets you feel its rich history. The room had a historical design but was kept clean and comfortable. The dining area featured semi-private spaces, allowing for a relaxed dining experience. The Onsen had slightly dim lighting, which enhanced the historical ambiance and provided deep warmth to the body.

Both the Onsen and cuisine are exceptional.
This was my first stay at this accommodation. It had a nostalgic Showa retro atmosphere, but it was beautifully renovated and clean. The staff's service was excellent. The onsen was colorless, transparent, with free-flowing hot spring water that could even be consumed—truly amazing. For meals, I opted for the French course, which was absolutely delicious. I was very satisfied with the unique dishes made with plenty of local vegetables. The chef's explanation added to the pleasant experience. I would love to stay here again!

Cozy Japanese-Western Retro Style
Upon arrival, a staff member kindly explained the location of the Room when we stopped on the floor connecting the main building and guest rooms. The dinner was very delicious. There were various dishes on the menu, and each one was delightful. Stained glass was used in various parts of the interior, including inside the facility and in the large public bath, creating a lovely atmosphere.

Feast of the Moon Village in the Forest of Western Plates
Arrived in the rain and parked in a spacious and easy-to-use parking lot. While hesitating about not being able to drive up to the covered entrance, staff kindly carried my luggage under an umbrella through the stepped approach. Checked in at the front desk, and my luggage was brought to the Room. The old, spacious Japanese-style room has been renovated into a sturdy wooden-floored space designed for enjoying the feel of bare feet on wood—luxurious yet comfortable. The ceiling design and light shoji screens retain a traditional Japanese ambiance. There is ample space for belongings, a large TV, and a comfortable sofa bed. The natural wood table adds an elegant touch. Twin beds offer excellent sleeping comfort in this serene space. The open-air bath seems nestled within the garden by the veranda—a wooden tub of sufficient size for even petite women to stretch their legs while soaking up to their shoulders at an ideal temperature throughout use—truly delightful water. Additionally, there is also a separate unit bath indoors. Dinner at "Lapis Lazuli" was served in private dining spaces created by partitioning off sections of a large hall with traditional farmhouse fittings—a feast rich with seasonal flavors and local specialties prepared with great care. This season featured an exquisite medley of forest mushrooms—absolutely delicious! Both sauce seasoning and cooking were perfectly suited to my taste. Despite other group guests staying as well, the restaurant remained quiet with attentive hospitality from the chef—a highly recommended experience. The private bath is housed within what resembles a natural wood bungalow featuring a large square wooden tub filled generously with free-flowing hot spring water—extremely relaxing!

It became a wonderful memory.
We stayed as a group of 5 adults and 1 child. The building and facility felt a bit old. The bath, being a natural Onsen with free-flowing hot spring water, was luxurious and we used it multiple times. As for the meals, it was delightful to enjoy French cuisine casually at the Onsen. We were able to savor plenty of local natural ingredients. Above all, we were deeply touched by the warm hospitality. We would love to visit again. It became a wonderful memory for us.

The open-air Onsen with mineral-rich spring water was incredibly relaxing and amazing. While the building itself has an aged charm, the Room has been renovated and was very comfortable. Both the quantity and quality of the meals were excellent, allowing us to enjoy a wonderful Onsen trip with my wife's parents.

Thank you for your hospitality. The Room (Western-style) and the large public bath seemed to have been renovated, and they were clean, beautiful, and very pleasant. I would definitely like to visit again. The TV was also a large size. One point: I would like to suggest considering placing the ice scoop outside of the ice maker for hygiene reasons. Thank you very much.
