Excellent
In a word: outstanding. Thank you to both the chef and the hostess. We will definitely be back.

In any case, the food is delicious—you’ll be hooked.
This auberge is well known as an Accommodation serving outstanding fish-focused cuisine. The owner couple are genuinely kind, and you may find it hard to leave. As an auberge, it’s not the place to expect luxurious Room amenities, but they provide a clean and comfortable space. I reduced the bath rating by one star because the private bath is no longer an Onsen, but considering how satisfying the meals are, it more than makes up for it. Dinner is excellent, making full use of high-quality ingredients, but breakfast is equally impressive—be sure to take your time and enjoy it.

Abalone is abalone.
I visited “Summer Seafood Feast Watanabe.” Above all, the food is exceptionally delicious. This time, the summer shellfish were large and meaty, and I was truly satisfied with the wonderful quality and the chef’s outstanding skills in every dish. For breakfast, I couldn’t contain my excitement about trying a sandwich for the first time. It was a croissant sandwich—crispy and fluffy, with amazingly tasty eggs! Thank you for the wonderful meal. The Room is simple, but I really admire that you continue offering services like complimentary drinks. Please keep up the great work—I’m cheering you on. Next time, I’ll visit in autumn!

My heart felt full—it was pure happiness!
Since we don’t do sightseeing, we focus on meals and the Onsen and look for an Accommodation where we can relax in our Room—this place is perfect! Above all, the food is delicious, the Onsen feels wonderful, and we can spend time at ease in a simple yet spotlessly cleaned Room. The Wi‑Fi connects smoothly as well, so it’s completely stress-free. With each dish, we enjoyed imagining how it was prepared while looking at the menu, and once again our hearts were full—it was pure happiness. Not only is the cooking excellent, but the couple’s calm and gentle atmosphere is so comforting that this has become our favorite Accommodation. We’ll be back in a different season—thank you in advance.

Dinner met our expectations in both quality and quantity. Each dish showed the chef’s careful attention to detail and the excellence of the ingredients—we truly enjoyed a “feast from the sea.” For breakfast, we happily enjoyed a basket of homemade bread, a salad made with local vegetables, and an assortment of seasonal fruits.

Highly satisfied.
This year again, I found myself craving Mr. Watanabe’s cooking, so I decided to take a trip to Izu. Amid my hectic daily life, this was the perfect place to treat myself. I enjoyed plenty of delicious meals and spent a relaxing time that completely washed away my everyday fatigue. No matter how many times I visit, I always leave thinking, “I want to come back!” and “I want to eat here again!”—thanks to the truly feast-worthy dishes made with seasonal vegetables and fish, as well as the wonderful personalities of the chef and madam. I’d love to visit again in a different season.

It became a cherished memory from our mother-and-daughter trip.
Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of my mother and me the other day. My Review is a bit late, but now that things have finally settled down, I’d like to share it while reminiscing about our trip. Since moving to the Kansai area, I now live apart from my mother in Shizuoka. This time, we planned a trip that also served as our Golden Week visit home, traveling from Nishi-Izu to Izu Kogen, and stayed at this Accommodation. My 75-year-old mother is still working actively and stays very busy; in her daily life she often ends up eating meals while standing. I chose this Accommodation because I wanted her to enjoy delicious food at a relaxed pace and spend some peaceful time. As it turned out, it was truly an unforgettable stay that left us completely satisfied. What impressed us most was the heartfelt hospitality—and above all, the outstanding cuisine. Every dish was thoughtfully crafted, and each plate made us genuinely excited. It was beautiful to look at first, and once we tasted it, it exceeded our expectations even more. We could really feel the strong commitment to both ingredients and cooking methods. We were also moved by the freshly baked bread in the morning. There were so many varieties that it was hard to choose—soft, crisp, chewy…each with its own delicious character—and breakfast felt like pure happiness. The fruit platter also left a lasting impression. Since we don’t often get the chance to indulge like that in everyday life, we were delighted to savor wonderful fruit to our hearts’ content. Our Room was clean and spacious, with thoughtful touches and warm hospitality throughout—it was extremely comfortable. We spent time relaxing while enjoying the ocean view from the window. At night we used the private Onsen late in the evening and enjoyed a long soak together as mother and daughter. That time—talking about all sorts of things—has become a precious memory as well. I had seen Reviews mentioning that it can get crowded, but since we went later at night, we were able to enjoy it slowly. If we had chosen another Accommodation instead, these memories might not have felt nearly as warm. The carefully prepared cuisine and everyone’s considerate hospitality truly warmed our hearts. I imagine these are challenging times with rising prices and so on, but this is a wonderful Accommodation that I sincerely hope will continue for many years to come. We’re already looking forward to visiting again. Next time, I’d love to bring other family members as well. Thank you again for everything.

Happiness in every delicious bite
An unforgettable feast that far exceeds even the most delicious Reviews. In the warm, light-wood dining room, the charming tableware sets an exciting tone, and each delicate dish—fragrant and served piping hot—is filled with a sense of seasonality. The carefully selected ingredients deliver surprising depth of flavor, and perfectly paired wines double the happiness. From the bamboo shoots on the side to the strawberry sorbet, everything was worthy of being a star—truly moving. Breakfast also offers an irresistible variety for bread lovers. The famous fruit plate is a luxury, letting you enjoy many kinds one slice at a time. Wrapped in Madam’s warm artwork, it was the finest auberge—purely dreamlike. (The bed felt narrow for larger guests, and I worried about rolling off.)

A Luxurious Day
Thank you again. No matter what season I visit, I’m always pleasantly surprised by the delicious food every time. This time, to my delight, the place was reserved just for us, so I could enjoy the bath whenever I liked—and it was fun having Madame all to myself. I was thrilled to finally have the white asparagus and tomatoes I’d been craving, along with wonderful fish—everything was completely satisfying. I also love WATANABE’s morning soup and fruit! I’m excited every time to see what will be served. Taking home the leftover bread means the enjoyment continues at home. Thank you as always. I’ll be back again.

Delighted by the deliciousness even on my second visit
When we visited last February, during a truly cold season, we stayed with the steak-centered course. Of course the Izu beef steak was delicious, but the shrimp main dish other guests were having looked unbelievably good—so this time we chose the standard course, a full seafood course. I uploaded some photos here, and in any case, every single dish is genuinely delicious. The mehikari fritto that I thought was the standout last time was on the menu again and was wonderful once more—but everything else was also outstanding. My family member, who nods along while eating and blurts out “So good” whenever something is delicious, seemed very busy throughout the meal (laugh). This time’s main dish—pan-seared Suruga Bay langoustine—came with a shrimp-based sauce that concentrated all of its flavor. The sautéed grouper (kue), rich with fat, had thick flesh cooked fluffy and tender, and it paired beautifully with a clam sauce. It was my first time trying an squid called Jindo-ika, and its deep flavor and tenderness were truly exceptional. We were also amazed by French white asparagus like we’d never had before; served with rapeseed blossoms as well, it felt like enjoying spring in both Europe and Japan at once. And what surprised us most was the new-onion bavarois topped with Ossetra caviar consommé jelly. Until now I’d thought this kind of dish peaked at carrot mousse topped with sea urchin jelly—but this surpassed that by far, in the best possible way. Dinner dessert was crème brûlée. I usually don’t care for it because it tends to be sweet and heavy, but paired with strawberry sorbet—and served alongside strawberry soup generously filled with strawberries—it felt light even though we were already full, and it was absolutely delicious. Breakfast was excellent across the board as well. The heaping basket of bread tasted so good it might even beat specialty bakeries—and being able to take some home as a souvenir made us very happy. Last time we learned there is only one Onsen bath shared among guests. This time we brought bath bombs planning to enjoy bathing in our Room’s unit bath too—and since we managed three baths (before dinner, after dinner, and before breakfast), we were completely satisfied. I’ve heard that an auberge originally began as a restaurant offering an Accommodation so guests could enjoy great food and wine without having to drive home. With that in mind, having an Onsen at all is wonderful—but above all else, this feels like a place made for savoring treasures from the sea.

A true feast of fresh seafood.
Dinner was delicious across the board, but the homemade bottarga, the crispy-scale grilled red tilefish with new-onion jelly, and the pan-seared langoustine were especially outstanding. Breakfast was exceptional as well—the nine different kinds of bread baked by the chef were superb. They even provided a bag and kindly told us to take any leftovers home. We also enjoyed a carefully selected assortment of different fruits, served one piece at a time. From sourcing ingredients to prep and cooking, everything is done by one person, and you can truly feel the care that goes into each dish. Thank you for the wonderful meal. We would love to visit again.

Satisfied again!
I visited hoping to enjoy freshwater prawns, but unfortunately the catch was poor and I wasn’t able to try them. Still, as always, the dishes brought out the best of the fresh ingredients through simple, well-executed cooking, and everything was delicious. With the very first bite, I felt that familiar sense of relief—“I’m so glad we came.” I’d love to experience again that happiness of falling asleep completely full after a feast from the sea.

Finally, the second time!
I had always wanted to visit WATANABE, as I often saw it highly praised by onsen accommodation bloggers and power reviewers on various sites. However, due to my childhood trauma of disliking fish, I couldn't muster the courage to go. I thought I might never visit until I saw their 10th-anniversary sale campaign last year in July, which gave me the push to finally make a reservation. At that time, fearing that the "Seafood Feast Plan" might not have anything I could eat, I chose the Steak Plan instead. But from the very first dish, which I tried hesitantly, I was completely captivated. Even ingredients like fish that I'd usually avoid opened my eyes with their deliciousness—it was truly a series of "eye-opening" moments. This newfound confidence and courage led me to decide that next time I'll go for the "Seafood Feast Plan," resulting in this return visit. The cuisine at WATANABE is exceptional not only because of the chef's skills but also due to the outstanding quality of ingredients used. It rivals even our favorite auberge where we dine frequently for its meals—yet WATANABE's accommodation fee is less than half! Inspired by how they focus entirely on food excellence, I'm starting to think it might be worth shifting our dining preferences entirely toward them. This time around, being able to enjoy my favorite scampi prepared in two different ways across two dishes made me incredibly happy. Even though my husband was too full and left some of his main dish behind—I happily finished it off myself! It felt like indulging in a year's worth of scampi (laughs). Not just their main dishes but everything else—from granita with refreshing lemon acidity and subtle sweetness; soup made from sweet Benihoppe strawberries so good it almost brought tears; beautifully arranged breakfast bread served in baskets; fruit plates decorated like jewel boxes—was absolutely delicious beyond words. Now it's clear why so many people cherish WATANABE as a special place they repeatedly return to. If only WATANABE were nearby—I’d probably visit monthly! Next time around (likely this summer), I'm looking forward especially toward enjoying black abalone—a delicacy missed out last time due solely because poor decision-making on my part! Thank you again—and see you soon!

Christmas and New Year
We stayed at the accommodation on the last weekend of December. A few days prior, we treated ourselves to another stay, where the facility was adorned with Christmas decorations. This time, it was beautifully dressed for New Year's. The seasonal touches in WATANABE's cuisine and interior displays are truly delightful. For someone like me who is often busy, it serves as a wonderful example of a thoughtful and refined lifestyle. I also enjoy discovering new fruits and vegetables at WATANABE that I’ve never encountered before. However! Even blueberries purchased directly from farmers feel entirely different when served at WATANABE, showcasing how carefully the chef selects ingredients—it's truly impressive! Not only is the seafood absolutely delicious, but even the accompanying vegetables are exceptional. Since staying at WATANABE, I always buy dill whenever I see it and have recently become so fond of stick senorita broccoli that I now order it directly from farmers. WATANABE is not just an incredibly delicious and relaxing accommodation; it has also brought so much enrichment to my daily life. I believe this deep admiration must be what they call true devotion. Thank you for everything this year as well—I look forward to many more stays!

The Perfect New Year
We were fortunate to secure a reservation for New Year's and enjoyed our first dinner of the year at Watanabe. From amuse-bouche to dessert, everything was absolutely delicious, making it a truly blissful experience. It’s hard to put into words just how wonderful and delightful this accommodation is, so if you're curious, we highly recommend visiting! You’re sure to be captivated.

Mr. Watanabe in December
This month, I treated myself and stayed here twice. Despite your busy days, your warm hospitality as a kind couple is always appreciated. I get excited thinking about the feast of the sea that awaits! The winter seafood carefully prepared by the chef, beautifully plated vegetables, fruit desserts, and delicious Japanese sake perfectly paired with the dishes—everything is so tasty that I end up eating quickly despite wanting to savor every bite. As the menu nears its end, I feel a bit sad and nostalgic. During this season of winter shrimp, I tried shrimp risotto for the first time—it was delightful! While lobster is undoubtedly delicious too, the rice with shrimp miso flavor was incredibly tasty. Twice now I've enjoyed Watanabe-san's lobster bouillabaisse; its herbal aroma was wonderful and it tasted amazing. The handmade karasumi (dried mullet roe), deep-fried mehikari fish fritters, mousse made from seasonal vegetables, smoked fresh Spanish mackerel—all were absolutely delicious. I imagine you must be very busy during year-end and New Year’s holidays; how lucky are those who get to stay at your accommodation during this time! Someday I'd love to spend New Year's here as well. Thank you again for everything this year—I look forward to visiting again next year!

A wonderful accommodation with high reliability and great appeal.
We stayed at the accommodation as a couple this time. We've been visiting since our son was in elementary school, and now he's an adult. We are such fans of WATANABE that staying here at least once a year has become a routine for us. Unfortunately, our son couldn't join us this time due to his schedule, which he was very disappointed about. The meals that captivate our family are, of course, amazing, but the warm hospitality of the owner couple is also one of the charms we appreciate. The room is clean and simple with amenities and yukata provided, allowing us to pack minimally. Although there is no open-air bath, we love that the private-use family bath lets us relax without any concerns. As for the meals—there are no words other than "delicious!" You can truly taste the chef's dedication and passion in every dish. Our son who couldn't come begged us to buy all kinds of jam for him! He enjoyed it with bread he brought back from breakfast (which he couldn’t finish). He even said WATANABE’s bread is better than any bakery in Tokyo! (laughs) After returning home, we noticed that WATANABE’s website had been updated—it now conveys its charm even more effectively! We’ll definitely visit again soon. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

A true "Feast of the Sea"
We visited upon a friend's request to enjoy delicious cuisine and relax. Once again, every dish was exquisite, and we savored each one with delight. The three of us could only exclaim, "Delicious!!" throughout the meal. It was truly a blissful time. The weather was perfect, and the view of Sagami Bay from our Room was stunning. Not only were the twin beds comfortable, but even the sofa bed provided a great night's sleep for everyone. We enjoyed the private open-air bath twice, which was incredibly refreshing. The portable basket for carrying bath items was very convenient as well. Thank you so much for taking care of us over these two days! It turned out to be a trip that left both our hearts and stomachs completely satisfied.

Mr. Watanabe in November
We had a wonderful stay on a sunny weekend in November. WATANABE-san was already preparing for Christmas, and the seasonal atmosphere was beautifully reflected in both the cuisine and the decor. As soon as we stepped into the entrance, we were embraced by a warm and lovely ambiance, with every corner showcasing Madame's impeccable taste. We always feel healed and energized by Chef and Madame's hospitality. Thanks to them, we can face our days with renewed strength. It’s no exaggeration to say that WATANABE-san is truly a sanctuary for us. From langoustines to spiny lobsters, mehikari fish, grenadier fish, cod milt, chestnuts—every dish at WATANABE is absolutely exquisite. We feel so fortunate to have discovered such an incredible place like WATANABE-san’s establishment. Looking forward eagerly to our visit later this month! We’ve been reminiscing over photos of past meals in anticipation. Once again, my friend and I will be in your care soon—thank you so much!

Let's go enjoy some spiny lobster!
I heard that spiny lobster is in season from October to November, so I was very excited about the dishes this time. We enjoyed plenty of delicious local fish from Izu, including spiny lobster and freshwater prawns. After the meal, we could relax and rest in our room right away, which made for a stress-free dining experience. This time, we were able to enjoy the Onsen at our leisure as if it were reserved just for us. Thank you very much!

Relax and unwind on your own.
With a limited number of rooms, it’s perfect for a relaxing stay even for solo travelers. The meals are exceptionally delicious and highly satisfying. Although the rooms and baths are old, they are kept very clean. The handmade bread at breakfast was delicious with a wide variety, so much so that I couldn’t finish it all and took some to go. I look forward to visiting again. Thank you very much!

Thank you for the meal.
This accommodation had been on my list for a long time, and I was finally able to visit. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. The room, though simple at first glance, was impeccably clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the amenities were more than sufficient for a relaxing stay. The timing of dinner service was perfect, and I appreciated thoughtful touches like being able to take home leftover breakfast bread. It truly reflected the owners' desire for guests to fully enjoy their meals. As this is a popular accommodation and reservations can be hard to secure, I definitely hope to visit again!

I am a repeat guest,...
I am a repeat guest, having stayed about 20 times. Recently, I had been visiting various facilities of a resort hotel chain, so it had been a while since my last visit. However, I found myself craving the cuisine at Umi no Gochisou WATANABE and decided to return this time. The hostess welcomed me with her always lovely and warm smile. It had been some time since I last enjoyed the chef's dishes, but they were as exceptional as ever. Even compared to accommodations often regarded as high-end, I don't know of any place that offers such outstanding cuisine at such reasonable prices like Umi no Gochisou WATANABE does. I thought about what sets Umi no Gochisou WATANABE apart from other accommodations in my own way—of course, the chef's skills are excellent—but I believe it's also the extraordinary quality of the ingredients used that makes all the difference. Considering today's rising food costs, I can't help but wonder how they manage to use such premium ingredients so generously while maintaining profitability. As an auberge where dining is the main focus, its rooms and onsen may not be luxurious but are comfortable enough for a pleasant stay. Even if you think of your payment as entirely for the meals with rooms and onsen included as bonuses, you'll find it completely worth it because their cuisine is truly outstanding. For those who want to enjoy top-quality seafood dishes at their best, this accommodation comes highly recommended with confidence!

A Satisfying First Visit
It was our first visit as a family of three. We were lucky to enjoy the private bath in the evening, night, and morning due to a last-minute cancellation. As mentioned in other reviews, dinner was a delight for seafood lovers, with one delicious dish after another. The French rosé wine recommended by the hostess was an excellent choice. Breakfast featured carefully selected ingredients with soup, vegetable plates, and freshly baked bread varieties. However, while this is just personal preference, it might be nice if portions of bread and fruit plates were slightly reduced in favor of "ocean delicacies" like clam chowder or an omelet with white fish and Suruga Bay sakura shrimp with cheese. In any case, we were very satisfied with the delicious food and the heartfelt hospitality from both the hostess and chef. We will definitely return during another season. Thank you very much!

Autumn Skies, Shrimp, and Me
We stayed at the accommodation on a Sunday in October, when the signs of autumn could finally be felt. Near the accommodation, pampas grass swayed gently in the breeze. For shrimp lovers, this is an irresistible season. WATANABE's seafood feast featured prawns, scampi, and spiny lobster—each dish brought joyful excitement! (I savored every bite.) Every type of shrimp was sweet and plump, absolutely delicious. The shrimp soup overflowing on the plate? Not a single drop was left behind! And it wasn’t just about shrimp. Golden eye snapper, abalone, red grouper, turban shellfish, deep-sea smelt fish, horse mackerel, barracuda fish with red bell pepper sauce; sea urchin; Japanese chestnuts; and more! The chef carefully selects ingredients to create these dishes while Madame serves them with care—it’s no wonder everything tastes so amazing and leaves such an impression every time we visit. Truly remarkable! Breakfast was another highlight—a perfect meal enjoyed under clear autumn skies while nostalgic BGM transported us back to our student days. It was simply fantastic. This one-night stay gave us renewed energy to keep going forward. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience!

Unparalleled delicious dishes keep coming one after another! I always look forward to the chef's variety of sauces, which make me excited every time. The pairing of dinner and wine is delightful, but I especially love the freshly baked bread selection at breakfast and the generous fruit plate. The hostess's thoughtful hospitality makes me want to return again and again, and I can't help but press the reservation button. Looking forward to visiting again!

The Best Accommodation
This is an exceptional place that makes you want to visit Izu just to see Mr. Watanabe. Above all, the food is absolutely delicious! What’s amazing here is how they make you realize that ingredients you once disliked or avoided can actually be so delicious. This time, I enjoyed abalone and eel, which I used to dislike, and it broadened my culinary horizons. The fresh seafood, as well as the accompanying vegetables and sauces, are outstandingly delicious. While dining, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Delicious! Amazing!” I also heard many other guests at nearby tables saying, “This is so good!” The warm service from the hostess further enhances the joy of dinner. For breakfast, there’s a variety of freshly baked bread, heartwarming potage, a meticulously prepared vegetable plate, a generous fruit plate, and more—a breakfast that energizes you for the day. The fruit selection includes luxurious items like Sunshine Red and black figs, making me wonder if it’s even profitable for them—it was that extravagant. The chef humbly mentioned, “Since we’re a small accommodation, we at least want to excel in our food,” but with such delicious and luxurious meals, along with the pleasant private onsen, clean and beautiful rooms, and a relaxing atmosphere, this is the perfect accommodation for me. Recently, many places focus on visually appealing dishes for social media, and it feels like there are fewer places that serve heartfelt, genuinely delicious meals. Visiting Mr. Watanabe warms my heart because I can feel the sincerity and passion of the chef and hostess. Thank you for the wonderful time. I’m looking forward to visiting again.

Autumn Menu
Enjoyed the autumn menu at Watanabe as the heat subsided. It's now the season for my favorite shrimp, though I must admit I love it all year round without preference. Staying here annually (except during the COVID period), this time I finally got to try their Mont Blanc dessert. Every dish was a delight, including the rare and luxurious Shibudai fish, spiny lobster, mehikari fish, and everything else on offer. Paired with a sake tasting set, it was a perfect match with the exquisite cuisine. Having recently started solo traveling just a few months ago, I'm already planning another trip next month. Watanabe is truly a place where you can relax and enjoy gourmet meals without any stress even when traveling alone. Many thanks to the chef and madam for their warm hospitality as always! Looking forward to visiting again soon!

Delicious Meals
Experience the ultimate summer getaway with a delightful culinary journey at WATANABE in Izu Kogen! Indulge in an extraordinary dinner featuring a feast of fresh seafood: spiny lobster, abalone, red rockfish, sea urchin, local turban shell, squid, top shellfish, golden eye snapper, and small sweetfish. Every dish is crafted to perfection and bursting with flavor. Complementing the seafood delicacies is WATANABE's homemade whole-grain bread. Enjoy the excitement of delicious flavors!
This summer, Mr. Watanabe stayed with us for the second time. He always visits with his regular guest friends, bringing a sparkle to our accommodation. He enjoyed abalone twice this season as part of his summer treat. Unfortunately, he couldn't make it for a third visit. Perhaps the abalone is beautifully prepared by the chef, transformed in appearance and waiting on the plate for its moment to shine? It's so delightful that he wishes he could enjoy it every week. The first time, it was served with a vermouth sauce topped with seaweed butter—smooth like cream and perfectly balanced between seaweed and butter flavors. The second time featured abalone in a port wine and butter sauce; the transparent butter sauce combined beautifully with the elegant reddish hue of port wine, shining on the plate. The taste is always exceptional—so much so that even when intending to savor each bite slowly, it's hard not to eat quickly! Apologies for eating too fast; it's just that both visually and flavor-wise, everything is incredibly satisfying. Not only was the abalone exquisite but all of this summer's seafood dishes were thoroughly enjoyed as well. Paired with chef- and madam-recommended Japanese sake, these meals created deliciously fun and happy moments. I’ll work hard again so I can stay at your accommodation once more. Please take care during these lingering hot days of summer!
