    Highly cost-effective and recommended Accommodation

It has only just opened and there are still only a few Reviews, and it was fully booked, so I was a little worried things might be hectic, but I was extremely satisfied. The staff were wonderful, including the parking attendants and the dining venue team. There were many things that exceeded my expectations, such as the meals, drinks in the lounge, and the free-flowing natural Onsen with yunohana drifting in it. The sink area and toilet in the Room had not been renovated, but they were well cleaned and I didn’t mind that they felt old. In any case, at this opening commemorative price point, I almost felt bad paying so little.

Please excuse my candid comment, offered in the hope of future improvement.

As the Hotel had just opened on July 1, I visited with mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement. It cost about 4,000 yen by taxi from Shizukuishi Station. The driver didn’t recognize the name “Gensen Ichizu,” so it would have been better to say the former “Choeikan.” It’s a large, clean-looking building. At the entrance there was a pine-tree-style ornament and many Phalaenopsis orchids. The front desk can only handle two parties at a time, so we waited a little. There is no escort to the Room. I also wished there were luggage carts. The Room door is a sliding door and not auto-locking. The key was hard to insert. The Room is spacious; even with a couch sofa that could probably be used as an extra bed, there was still plenty of space. What I didn’t like in the Room: no telephone; only ceiling lighting with no stand lamps or adjustable lighting, so it becomes completely dark; nothing in the refrigerator—I wish at least water had been provided; only two roasted green tea bags (these days, Hotels aiming for this kind of stylish feel usually have Nespresso); no clock; the toilet and sink area seemed not renovated and felt outdated; an air purifier was placed in what used to be an alcove, but there was no outlet nearby so it had to be moved to use it (and there was no water added for humidifying). What was good: plenty of towels; outlets on the headboard made charging easy; there was a magnifying mirror and an accessory tray. The welcome drinks included unlimited beer, which made my husband very happy. I did wish there were snacks as well… What concerned me was that after the first group left, glasses were overflowing on the counter—perhaps they are short-staffed. The bath is spacious, and since it’s an alkaline simple hot spring, my skin felt smooth and it was wonderful. If I had one request, I would have liked a place to rest while drinking cold water. Both dinner and breakfast are buffet-style with a wide variety of dishes—you can’t possibly eat everything. The seafood said to be sourced from Sanriku was delicious. The roast beef was nicely cooked and tender; the sirloin in particular was excellent. Buffet sweets are often not very good, but here everything—from small-cut cheesecake to matcha cake and strawberry desserts—was tasty, and the bottled puddings were also very good. You can really feel they put effort into their meals. There were plenty of staff members as well, and they cleared plates promptly. Overall we were satisfied. I wrote various points hoping they may be helpful going forward—please forgive my frankness.”

    Your First Visit to Shizukuishi

I’d been looking forward to the reopening! The food was absolutely delicious. There were plenty of vegetables, so it was well-balanced and healthy. The roast beef and seafood were fresh and high quality—you could really feel the attention to detail. The hot spring water was excellent, and I was able to relax and soak at my leisure.

I stayed at the opening promotional rate, but I’ll speak frankly.

After seeing this Accommodation highly praised on a local TV station’s evening news, I found out that I could stay at a special rate through the booking site it is listed on, so I immediately made a Reservation (Deluxe Twin Japanese-style room for two, 1 night with breakfast and dinner) and stayed on a weekday. Before arrival, I checked the Reviews on the booking site, noted the low-rated points (just the individual reviewers’ opinions), and then checked in. Perhaps because their main concept is a strong focus on Onsen—true to the name “Gensen Ichizu” (single-minded devotion to natural hot springs)—some items that are provided at many Onsen Accommodations seemed to have been cut for cost. There were also items not sized for Japanese guests, and even well-known branded amenities that were difficult to use without clear instructions—areas that could use improvement going forward. That said, compared with these negatives, the positives—especially the meals, guest room, and welcome service—were stronger overall, so we were satisfied.

    It seems this Accomm...

It seems this Accommodation was purchased from a different operator, and the bathroom faucet was left old. Since everything else was so clean, it did feel out of place. Also, the Wi‑Fi did not work at all. When I informed the front desk, they said that can happen when they are close to fully booked. Without Wi‑Fi, I also couldn’t call the front desk from my Room, which was very inconvenient. Shouldn’t this be addressed so it works even when fully booked? At dinner, the male staff member who guided me kindly considered that I was dining alone and seated me at an end table with fewer people nearby. However, later a family with a small child was seated right next to me by a female staff member. It’s not the child’s fault, but they seemed to get bored and became very loud partway through—honestly, it’s unrealistic to expect such a young child to stay quiet. The parents may have wanted to come, but I also felt sorry for the child having to go along. Even so, despite other open seats being available, I was disappointed that they were seated next to me anyway; it showed a lack of consideration on the part of the female staff member. Overall, I think it is a very good Accommodation, but it’s true that there were several disappointing moments.

I’d love to stay here again.

In a place that makes you think, “Here?”, the exterior isn’t new, but the inside was clean and well kept. The Room had a fresh tatami scent and felt very comfortable. The hair dryers in both the bath area and the Room were ReFa, and my hair felt so smooth! The hot spring water had lots of mineral deposits and was amazing! The temperature was just right, too. The washing area has partitions for each person. I could relax while listening to the sound of the river. The fresh greenery was beautiful, and I’m sure autumn leaves would be stunning as well! After the tuna carving show, we received nakaochi (scraped tuna), and there were platters of sashimi like otoro and chutoro—everything was delicious. We didn’t have to clear our own plates; staff came around for us, and their smiles and service were excellent! The food was great! I was also thrilled with the large roast beef made from Tankaku beef. We could also try wanko soba for 1,000 yen—it was so much fun, and it tasted good too! It’s expensive at places like Azumaya, so I highly recommend doing it here. For welcome drinks, there were wine, draft beer, and soft-serve ice cream available in the lounge until 9:00 PM. What disappointed me was that although three of us stayed, only amenities for two were provided in the Room; there wasn’t a humidifier; and there wasn’t a basket to take things to the bath area—but overall it more than made up for it. They even prepared a birthday celebration plate for my daughter, which truly made her happy! There weren’t many foreign guests or children either, so we could unwind in a calm atmosphere. Highly recommended!

The meals and the Onsen are excellent.

As it has only been open for a little over two weeks, everything is very clean overall and the atmosphere is great. The welcome drinks in the lobby are available until 9:00 p.m., the staff are kind, and the Onsen is spacious with pleasantly silky, high-temperature water. Since meals are buffet-style, I didn’t expect too much, but I was surprised by the huge variety—there was no way to try everything. There was also a tuna carving show, and it was delicious—pure luxury. A few disappointing points... Perhaps because an older Ryokan was renovated, the hallway to the Room and inside the Room had a musty/old smell, and scratches and stains were noticeable in places. Also, you need to bring your Room towels to the large public bath area yourself, but there’s no bath basket-style bag provided, and there isn’t a collection box for wet towels in the changing room. Still, I was satisfied with how good the Onsen was and how luxurious the food felt.

    The meals were very ...

The meals were very satisfying. The seafood was especially delicious, and there was also a tuna carving show—the taste was outstanding. There were two types of rice, white rice and sushi rice, which felt like a thoughtful touch. We could also enjoy welcome drinks until 9:00 p.m., which became a nice after-dinner treat. However, it was disappointing that the air conditioning turned off in the middle of the night and it was too hot to sleep, and since there is no phone in the Room, guests who are not comfortable using a smartphone need to go to the front desk.

A Hotel Dedicated to Onsen and Fine Dining

I stayed here on the second weekend after opening. The operations were probably still a bit unstable, but thanks to the opening discount, I was able to stay at a great rate, and overall it was a very satisfying visit. What stood out most was the Onsen and the food. The dinner buffet was plentiful, focusing on seafood and local dishes, and everything was beautifully presented. On top of that, there were experiences like wanko soba and a tuna carving show—better than expected. For breakfast I thought, “Seafood again?” but I couldn’t resist the vibrant sashimi selection (even more variety than at dinner). I ended up enjoying a luxurious seafood bowl in the morning. The Onsen had an impressive volume of water. Between the bubbling sound of the spring water welling up and that distinctive Onsen scent you notice as soon as you open the door to the large public bath, it really makes you feel like you’ve come to a proper hot spring destination. As for the guest room, there was no complimentary bottled water provided, the minibar felt underwhelming given how large its cabinet was, and the loungewear looked carelessly placed. The rooms have been nicely renovated, but they didn’t feel particularly outstanding—just average. I hope this area improves over time and adds more value to future stays. Access from Kanto isn’t exactly convenient, but that’s also why—when I want to slow down and spend relaxed time in an Onsen—I’d consider making another Reservation.

    Looking forward to what’s next

We were able to stay at a great price thanks to the opening promotion and the Iwate Discount. Since I was traveling with my mother, who is not comfortable with large public baths or sento, we chose a Room with an open-air bath. However, the water temperature was lukewarm, so we got out quickly. The washing area and the bath are separated, and you have to pass through the bedroom to go out to the balcony where the open-air bath is located. Because the boundary between the tatami room and the bedroom is not a wall but more like a lattice sliding door, you can be seen while moving around. There were no bathrobes either, so we had to walk over wrapped in towels, which felt a bit awkward. Also, two of the three blinds in the bedroom would not come down. In addition, outside there is a shed(?) very close by and cars pass nearby as well, so we were concerned about being seen. A movable screen/door would be nice. The stars were beautiful at night. Although the shower should be new, water did not come out properly from all of the holes, so we used only the center (jet) mode. We only used our in-Room open-air bath, but it seems that when going to the large public bath you are expected to bring your Room towels; if it’s only one towel per person, you end up using a damp towel. We couldn’t find any loungewear in our Room and tried to contact reception/front desk, but there was no phone installed. You’re supposed to scan a QR code shown on the TV with your own smartphone and call via an app(?). However, it wouldn’t connect no matter how many times we tried, so we went directly to reception/front desk and received them. The bed was slightly firm and comfortable. It would be convenient to have a clock by the bedside. The floor chair in the tatami room has rather thin cushioning (zabuton), so sitting for long periods made my hips hurt. The nice reclining chair was comfortable and relaxing; however when we opened shoji screens in front of it, peeling paint on part of balcony stood out visually—it felt like such a waste. There are many fine tea utensils provided, but there were only two green tea bags. We would have appreciated mineral water or a coffee maker. There was drink service in lobby area/lounge area , but I only learned after checkout that soft-serve ice cream was also available. Because air conditioning is strong in dining area/restaurant , long-sleeved loungewear might be just right. The wanko soba experience was fun. It was disappointing that dishes that should have been served hot were cold, and morning coffee tasted weak. All staff members were kind, and their smiles were wonderful. We also appreciated Shuttle Service operation.

    Highly satisfied

Excellent. The only downsides were the dirty Room window and that the TV could not receive satellite channels. Otherwise, it is a first-class Ryokan. The drink service in the lounge was especially great, and the tuna used in the carving show tasted outstanding.

    The Finest Countryside Onsen

I used my vacation to visit an Onsen in Iwate. The Ryokan was located along a narrow road in the hot spring town that was a bit hard to find even with navigation. It seems to have been renovated, and the Room was spacious and relaxing. The meals were excellent, and I could enjoy both the welcome drink (alcohol) and the food to my heart’s content. Both dinner and breakfast featured mainly Japanese cuisine with local ingredients, which I was very satisfied with. The loungewear (synthetic fabric) didn’t suit my skin, so I couldn’t sleep in it as is. If possible, I would have liked cotton pajamas or a yukata. The semi-open-air bath was wonderful, and I could also enjoy the sound of the river. It would be helpful to have an Onsen towel or basket for going to the changing area, and having spare towels available would be convenient too.

    Stay on our opening day.

I happened to have a day off and found a Ryokan on its opening day, so I made a Reservation. When I arrived at 3:00 PM, the staff came out to greet me in the parking lot. The entrance was decorated with many flower baskets, and you could really feel the excitement of opening day. In the lobby, there were welcome drinks, and I relaxed in chairs facing the river view while enjoying ice cream, beer, and wine. The Room was a Japanese-style room renovated with beds added. There were power outlets for charging near the bed, but it was difficult to plug in the built-in air purifier and humidifier. The bed was very comfortable. Meals were buffet-style with a wide variety of options, all tasting great. There was also a wanko soba experience corner, and I received a certificate showing how many bowls I ate. The bath was an alkaline Onsen with a smooth, slightly thick texture. Next to the tub there was a shallow area where hot water collected, and I enjoyed lying back to relax there. Since this is a historic Onsen town, I hope it continues to thrive for many years to come.

    名張のいっちーは服部半蔵の子孫?

We were thoroughly satisfied with our two-night stay. This is a Ryokan we would love to stay at again next time.

I’d like to share a few things that stood out to me. - Please improve the in-house slippers as soon as possible. The area along the line from my big toe rubbed and became painful. - There was no luggage cart for carrying large bags. - I would like a fan placed in the changing area of the large public bath. - Since our Room had an open-air bath, using it at night inevitably let insects into the Room, so I would like mosquito coils or insect spray provided in the Room. - Even though the Room had a Nambu iron teapot, tea strainer, electric kettle, and stylish coffee cups/teacups, there were no tea leaves or coffee packs provided. If you do not provide them, I think it would be better to note on your website: “A kettle, teapot, teacups, and cups are provided; please feel free to bring your preferred tea leaves or coffee.” I didn’t get a chance to use those lovely items at all. - Regarding the open-air bath in the Room: it was lukewarm at first and adjusting the temperature took some effort, so how about displaying instructions such as “How to adjust the temperature”? Also, since the entrance area gets wet when going in and out of the open-air bath, I wanted one extra bath mat. The meals offered an excellent selection as well, but I noticed a few points here too: - First of all, why is Japanese tea not served? Please reconsider this. - The boundary between fat and lean on the sirloin roast beef was sinewy and tough; I couldn’t bite through it easily. - Overall, many of the hot dishes felt lukewarm. - There was no regular miso soup at breakfast. - This is just my personal request: since the shrimp for tempura fried right in front of us were small, how about switching to larger shrimp (with limits such as one per person) to make them more satisfying? Better yet, if fried shrimp were also available as an option, couples could share tempura and fried shrimp together. - Underneath where you pick up salad ingredients/items (?), I wanted larger deep bowl plates available (only shallow plates or very small bowls were provided). I’ve written quite a lot, but all staff members’ hospitality was wonderful—and the free drinks on the Lobby floor from 15:00–21:00 (draft beer dispensed by a machine that fills from below—my first time seeing that—three kinds each of red and white wine; coffee drinks; soft serve ice cream; etc., all free) were fantastic! Despite everything mentioned above، this is a Ryokan I’d like to stay at again next time! Thank you very much for taking care of us during our stay.
