    New and clean

    This was our first stay at NIPPONIA in Ise, which we chose because it is close to our favorite restaurant, Toramaru. The facilities are new and very clean, making for a comfortable stay. We knew the amenities would be limited, and while the purification bath was not quite like a hot spring, it was pleasant. Another great thing about NIPPONIA is that if you pay in advance, you can check out with just a phone call. Not having to return the key saves time, which we appreciate. The food at NIPPONIA properties is delicious, too. Dining at Toramaru is one of the highlights of our visits to Ise, so we booked a room-only stay this time, but we would love to try the meals at the Ise property sometime. We would like to offer the following suggestion for your consideration. At check-in, perhaps you could first ask guests what information they need. We have stayed at other NIPPONIA properties and are familiar with the concept. We have also been visiting Ise once or twice a year for over 20 years, so we know the area. We thought we had gently conveyed this, but the lengthy check-in explanation left us even more tired after a long day of walking. First-time visitors to Ise or NIPPONIA may appreciate a detailed introduction, but some guests, like us, only need the essentials. We plan to stay again next year and would appreciate a brief explanation then. Apologies for the lengthy review, and thank you for your hospitality.

    The perfect base for visiting the shrine

    The property is just a short walk from the entrance to Ise Shrine’s Outer Shrine. This was my first stay at a NIPPONIA property, and the way an old storehouse was incorporated into the room was wonderful, creating a fantastic atmosphere. It was very quiet and relaxing. The bed and linens were comfortable, and I slept well. The staff were courteous and kind. There are also several shops in old buildings nearby, giving the area a charming atmosphere. Breakfast was modeled on the food offered to the shrine’s deities, making it a special experience. I think this is probably the best place to stay when visiting Ise Shrine.

    The renovated machiy...

    The renovated machiya-style room had thoughtfully designed bathroom facilities, and we were able to relax and enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The staff’s hospitality and the morning breakfast were also excellent. We chose this hotel because it was our first time visiting Ise Shrine and we thought staying nearby would be convenient, but there were a few points that concerned us. Since dinner is not provided, we ate out; however, as we stayed on Sunday in the middle of a three-day weekend, most seafood restaurants were closed for their regular day off, and the area around the hotel felt dark and quiet at night. Also, since there is no TV, we asked about borrowing a speaker to listen to music in the room, but none was available. Many accommodations these days provide speakers or projectors, so it felt somewhat lacking. Finally, there is no shuttle service from the nearest station to the hotel; taxis are not always waiting at the station either, and walking in an unfamiliar area made us uneasy—so we felt a shuttle service may be necessary. Overall, getting around Ise seems more convenient by car, so renting one might have been a better option for us. As expected of a town that has prospered since the Edo period thanks to pilgrimages to Ise Shrine, we received warm hospitality at restaurants and even from taxi drivers—making it an overall pleasant trip.

    Our family of four (...

    Our family of four (a couple and two preschool children) stayed for one night. Since we had to leave early the next morning, it was a shame we couldn’t have breakfast, but the staff were very kind and helpful. The room was new and clean, and the facilities were excellent. We’d love to stay longer next time. The bath was comfortable as well, although it was a little hard to find where to drain the water. Thank you very much.

    Leave everyday life behind at a retreat where Japan’s refined sense of beauty and warm hospitality bring peace to your mind.

    This is an inn I had been curious about for about a year, and I was finally able to make my long-held wish come true and stay here. At check-in, you kindly explained the history and culture of Ise-Kawasaki in great detail, which truly moved me. The Ise tea and salted yokan served to us were delicious, and the warm, attentive hospitality of the staff member who assisted us left a lasting impression. The room was a charming space where you could feel the breath of history—spacious, spotless, and extremely comfortable. The beautiful garden view stretching out beyond the room was so captivating that I found myself gazing at it for what felt like ages. The amenities were also wonderful, including VMG’s familiar rice bran series and the “Ise Misogi-yu” bath additive. What impressed me most was breakfast. The dishes, inspired by the tradition of “Shinsen,” offerings presented to the deities at the Grand Shrine, had deep, nourishing flavors brought to life by traditional skill and spirit. As I savored them while feeling the local climate and history, I experienced a profound sense of peace and healing. I also appreciated being able to enjoy Ise udon at breakfast after missing my chance during my trip—it was such a thoughtful touch. At check-out, you kindly took commemorative photos for us in front of the main building and warmly saw us off until we were out of sight; that moment remains vividly in my heart even now. It was clear that everyone on staff truly cherishes Ise’s history and culture. This stay reminded me of Japan’s precious sense of beauty—something easily forgotten amid everyday busyness—and made it an exceptional experience. I would love to return again. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time filled with warmth.

    The Open Ambience of Historic Architecture and a Satisfying Breakfast

    I had already understood the hotel’s concept through the website and other sources, but visiting in person exceeded my expectations. Because the historic building has been preserved and utilized as is, the interior feels spacious and has a dignified atmosphere. The high ceilings were especially impressive, creating a wonderful sense of openness. As this is different from top-tier luxury hotels or traditional hot spring ryokan, the facilities and bathing area are relatively simple, but I never felt inconvenienced or lacking anything. I was also very satisfied with breakfast. The set meal inspired by sacred offerings was simple yet felt indulgent, and it tasted even better than expected. The rice, miso soup, and rolled omelet in particular were delicious and made me feel happy from the morning. I would definitely like to visit again.

    A Guesthouse Where You Can Discover the Charm of Ise

    With convenient access from Iseshi Station, we were drawn to this beautifully maintained private rental and stayed for one night as a couple. From arrival to checkout, every staff member was attentive and courteous. I was pregnant and had some dietary restrictions, but they kindly accommodated them at breakfast with great flexibility. We also truly appreciated the detailed guidance on the history of Ise Jingu and how to visit properly, as well as recommendations for nearby shops. (We had researched Ise in advance, but the staff’s explanations were by far the clearest.) We’d love to return next time with our child as a family of three.

    A renovated traditional Japanese house accommodation that blends into the local community

    A renovated private house that preserves the atmosphere of a townscape still rich with Edo- and Meiji-era charm. I was impressed by the thoughtful concept, which also contributes to local preservation and revitalization. The services have been streamlined effectively, showing excellent management. I was surprised there was no TV, but spending time away from everyday distractions isn’t a bad thing.

    Surprisingly located in a quiet residential neighborhood.

    Because the building shown on Ikkyu (the front building) looked beautifully Japanese in style, I stayed one night with overseas guests visiting Ise Jingu. We chose a room converted from a kura storehouse, but it was a bit of a hassle because it required some driving from the front building—turn at one traffic light, then the next, then into small lanes in a residential area. This can’t really be helped, but since the area around the kura is just an ordinary neighborhood, the atmosphere wasn’t as charming as I had imagined. The front desk becomes unattended after early evening, so you can only reach them by mobile phone if anything comes up. The room is accessed by keypad code rather than a physical key. Overall it felt like a neat private rental. For breakfast, it was also slightly inconvenient to drive again to what seemed like a café or sweets shop created by renovating an earthen-floor space in the front building. The tables there are small—fine for tea—but with four meal trays on the table we struggled to find space even for our cups. The breakfast itself was delicious, so I would have appreciated being able to relax more comfortably. What was good: The staff provided very courteous guidance. They kindly advised us in detail about timing for visiting Naiku and parking options, which was very helpful. The location was also very convenient since we could walk to the station and Geku. It’s all-inclusive and well stocked with amenities as well as items in the refrigerator and bottled water. One disappointment: I accidentally left my phone charger on the table, but they didn’t contact me until I reached out first. They said they found it during cleaning and kept it for me; I wish they had contacted me when they found it. (They did send it to me cash on delivery when I asked.) Given that it’s reasonably priced and close to Geku, I may stay again when visiting Ise Jingu. Considering the breakfast space and other factors, next time might be just two people—perhaps close friends. I’d like to visit again if there’s another opportunity.

    A space where you can breathe in the local charm

    This Room is highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy a trip with a sense of history and charm. The entire Room was exceptionally clean—so much so that it made me wish I could live in a home like this. It was also a real highlight to see how everyone who assisted us carefully and lovingly conveyed the concept of this Accommodation. Breakfast was thoughtfully prepared, with dishes that reflected local and traditional flavors, leaving both my stomach and heart happy from the morning. Not only is the Accommodation itself wonderful, but I also hope you’ll take in the atmosphere around it as well. Every shop and street has its own charm, and you can truly feel the kindness of the people and the pleasant air. It became a place I genuinely want to visit again. Thank you for such a wonderful trip where we could stay at a great Accommodation and meet such lovely people. I won’t forget this connection.

    Tranquility

    We enjoyed a peaceful stay in a private house—inside a traditional storehouse. On the evening of our arrival, we were able to take a walk to Ise Jingu Geku and visit the shrine. Even at 5:00 pm in August, visits are still possible, and we were thrilled to experience the calm atmosphere of Geku before sunset. This wonderful experience was only possible because the Accommodation was within walking distance of Geku. We would love to stay here again for our next visit.

    A cozy accommodation where you’ll want to stay longer

    My first visit to Ise. Since it was a special trip, I wanted to stay at a wonderful Accommodation, and while searching I found NIPPONIA HOTEL Ise Kawasaki Merchant Town. I also checked Instagram in advance, and the atmosphere looked so lovely that I was excited even before our stay. At check-in, the staff explained Ise Grand Shrine and the merchant town of Kawasaki very carefully and clearly. My middle-school-aged son listened with great interest, and we were able to learn together as a family. The staff member who assisted us was very kind and greeted us with a wonderful smile, which left a strong impression. The chilled Ise tea and salted yokan served during the explanation were also delicious. Thank you very much. We were told the Accommodation is in a building built in the early Meiji period, so we could truly feel its history during our stay. Not only was the Room spacious, but everything—from the spotless bathroom to the bath salts and complimentary drinks—showed thoughtful attention to detail, making our time there extremely comfortable. And what impressed me most was the Room’s ceiling. It’s hard to put into words, but as I looked up at it, I felt an indescribably wonderful sense of briefly touching the lives of those who once lived there. The atmosphere of this historic building and the warm hospitality from all of your staff were both exceptional—an Accommodation that made me think, “I want to stay here again.” Even at check-out, thank you so much for seeing us off warmly until the very end. Thanks to this Accommodation, my first visit to Ise became an even more memorable experience. When we visit Ise again, we would love to stay here.

    Thank you for a wonderful time.

    During our stay, the staff’s hospitality was truly outstanding, and we are sincerely grateful. They kindly and flexibly consulted with us about the early-morning visit and breakfast times, and they were happy to accommodate sudden changes. There is no TV in the Room, but the quietness was actually very comfortable, and we enjoyed a much-needed digital detox. The sounds of insects and cicadas in the early morning made our trip even more enriching. The Room, making beautiful use of a traditional kura storehouse, blends history and modern comfort seamlessly—our stay itself felt like a special experience. We were also deeply comforted by your thoughtful gesture of providing “Misogi-no-Yu” for guests who are unable to visit Futami Okitama Shrine before praying at Ise Jingu. If we have the opportunity, we would love to return again next time. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time!

    It was a wonderful Hotel!

    I was looking for a Hotel to stay at for a visit to Ise Grand Shrine and found this place. The Room had a traditional Japanese feel, and it was nostalgic and very relaxing. The staff were warm and kind to our child as well, which made us very happy. I thought it might be a Hotel mainly for international guests, but it’s also a wonderful choice for Japanese guests. Everything at breakfast was delicious, and the optional egg-over-rice was outstanding! If I have the chance to visit Ise again, I’d love to stay here again. I’m also curious about the other Rooms. Thank you very much!

    We traveled to Ise t...

    We traveled to Ise to celebrate my mother’s birthday at her request, and stayed at this Ryokan. The Room was a renovated storehouse, full of character—a wonderful space and a truly memorable experience. We only had breakfast, but enjoyed a morning meal inspired by the “Mike” breakfast, which made us feel enriched from the start of the day. There are also many appealing restaurants nearby, so choosing dinner is easy. It’s within walking distance of Geku Shrine as well—an excellent Accommodation with a calm atmosphere.

    It was a wonderful Hotel.

    I stayed for one night starting May 1. It was a wonderful building that blends beautifully into the streetscape of Kawasaki. From check-in, the staff were very courteous, and I really appreciated having my luggage carried to my Room. The next day I planned to visit Ise Jingu (Naiku) early in the morning, and they kindly told me the bus schedule as well. They also explained the Kawasaki area around the Hotel in detail, which was very helpful. This time I stayed in a kura-style Room. The open atrium ceiling and impressive beams—rarely seen these days—made me wonder if they have been preserved from the original period. At the same time, the bath and washbasin areas have been comfortably renovated; the Room was spotless and very clean, with plenty of amenities, so there was absolutely no inconvenience. Tea, coffee, and drinks in the refrigerator were also free of charge, so I don’t think you would ever feel short of anything. Because I went out right after check-in and again early on day two, it’s a shame I didn’t get to enjoy what was in the fridge! Breakfast featured dishes unique to Ise; both the portion size and flavor were excellent, and I happily finished everything. It was also nice that a small serving of Ise udon was included. Although my stay was mainly for visiting Ise Jingu, this trip introduced me to “Kawasaki” for the first time. It isn’t a complicated area, but receiving a neighborhood map was perfect for an after-check-in stroll, and it also helped when choosing a place for dinner. Since it isn’t an Accommodation right next to the station, I hesitated when making my Reservation because I wondered if it might be far… but it wasn’t a distance that bothered me at all on foot. If anything, it became an opportunity to discover Kawasaki, and I’m glad I could stay at such a great Hotel. They kindly stored my luggage after checkout as well, and when I came back to pick it up they spoke warmly to me—I felt comfortable until the very end. While preserving this traditional building and townscape, once you step inside you’ll find a clean and comfortable space—an excellent Hotel indeed. I was also impressed by service that conveyed how much they value Ise’s history and culture. I spent quite a lot of time out this trip, but since it is such a lovely Hotel, next time I'd like to relax more slowly inside my Room as well. Thank you very much.

    A Cherished Home in Japan

    To coincide with my first visit to Ise in a while, I stayed at a NIPPONIA Accommodation for the first time. I strolled around Kawasaki, lined with old houses, and had dinner at a nearby sushi restaurant. At the Accommodation, I was once again impressed by how thoughtfully traditional Japanese homes are designed—even down to a single skylight. The next morning, I visited Geku Shrine early before breakfast. The red miso soup was so delicious that I couldn’t help having seconds. Highly recommended among Accommodations in Ise. Thank you very much.

    Learn from the Kojiki—what a discovery!

    Thanks to the generous guidance from the front desk staff, I revisited the “Kojiki” for the first time in years and felt as if I were traveling back to the very beginnings of Japan. With their help, I was also able to enjoy the town’s many highlights efficiently, making it a truly fulfilling trip. On the way home, I even spotted clouds shaped like an ascending dragon! The Accommodation also had a wonderful sense of history, and the soothing scent of wood was very relaxing. The spiny lobster miso soup and egg-over-rice were both delicious. Both front desk staff members were courteous, and it was clear how carefully they look after this Hotel, which left a great impression on me. I would love to visit again.     A unique stay experience in harmony with the local community

    It was a truly wonderful stay. The Accommodation was very clean, and we were able to relax in great comfort. The space, making the most of a historic traditional house, felt calm and offered a special experience away from everyday life. What impressed us even more was how much care is given to the local community. We were moved by the commitment to showcasing the area’s charm while preserving its streetscape and culture. The staff were kind, attentive, and welcoming, which made us feel at ease throughout our stay. Not only the Accommodation itself, but also exploring the surrounding area made for a highly satisfying experience. This is a fantastic Accommodation that we would love to stay at again.

    A Visit to Ise Grand Shrine

    The facilities are good, but the location is not ideal. Also, since this is a renovated traditional house, the ceilings are low and I bumped my head several times. As it’s not a mountain hut, I would have liked to have a TV.

    From Futami Okitama Shrine to Ise Jingu (Geku and Naiku) and Kongoshoji Temple

    From this Accommodation, you can enjoy the full Ise pilgrimage course—visiting not only Ise Grand Shrine but also Futami Okitama Shrine and Kongosho-ji Temple. We stayed for two nights. On our first day driving from Yokohama to Ise, we visited Futami Okitama Shrine. When we checked in that evening and spoke with the front desk staff about our plans for the next day, they recommended an early-morning visit to Ise Grand Shrine (Geku), which turned out to be a great decision. Thanks to that, we were able to take our time exploring a route that included Naiku, Okage Yokocho, and Kongosho-ji Temple. The front desk staff were very knowledgeable—not only about Ise but also about Kumano, which was our next destination—and their advice was extremely helpful. The Room, renovated from an old merchant house, felt almost too spacious for two people. Since this Accommodation makes use of renovated old homes and storehouses, there are some drawbacks such as less-than-ideal layout flow and occasional drafts through gaps. Even so, it is still highly recommended as a base for visiting Ise. Around the Room there are many old shops and houses that let you feel the history of Kawasakicho. We only had breakfast, but it was beautifully presented with thoughtful seasoning and good use of local ingredients—you can really sense the care put into the food. The small serving of Ise udon was also well seasoned and very satisfying. Recommended for anyone planning visits to shrines and temples around Ise.

    A Relaxing and Rejuvenating One-Night Stay

    As this was my first trip to Ise, I wanted to stay somewhere special, so I chose NIPPONIA. The attentive service and hospitality, the refined and calming guest room that preserves the atmosphere of the kura storehouse, and the breakfast concept and flavors—everything was truly wonderful. The Hotel is about a 10-minute walk in the opposite direction from the approach to the shrine. The merchant town has a different charm in the morning and at night, and the river flowing nearby is peaceful—I would have loved to take a stroll along it if time had allowed. The guest room was very clean, and within the rustic feel of kura architecture and wood, you can sense a sophisticated design. Amenities were just right, with drinks provided in the refrigerator as well—everything was thoughtfully prepared. There is also a convenience store very close by, which was reassuring. I had not a single complaint—it was hard to leave. I would love to stay here again when I visit Ise.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    There isn’t much around the area, but I was able to relax at the Accommodation as intended. The Room was spacious and comfortable. Everything was spotless, and while breakfast is simple, it’s delicious. Above all, I felt the professionalism of the staff who assisted us. I’d like to stay at another Accommodation in the same series as well.

    It was a wonderful trip.

    From check-in, we received a thoughtful explanation of Ise Grand Shrine, which was very informative and really heightened our excitement for the visit. The Room was very clean, and the bath was made of hinoki cypress with a wonderful fragrance—so relaxing. The surroundings were quiet, and it felt like stepping back in time. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    I think this is a wonderful project that makes great use of a renovated traditional Japanese house.

    I’ve stayed at several NIPPONIA Hotels, but this one felt different—perhaps because a different designer was involved—so it had a distinct atmosphere. Personally, I preferred places like Tamba-Sasayama, where the design makes better use of traditional houses. Even though it was quite a cold season, the sleepwear had three-quarter sleeves and felt chilly. Since it’s a traditional house, I think more consideration would be appreciated. This Hotel offers breakfast only, but the food was very delicious. However, regarding Reviews: I was asked multiple times during my stay, and even after returning home I received a long email requesting a Review, which put me off. That long email is overly persistent. I’m sure there are good intentions behind it, but if guests feel they had a good stay, there’s no need to push information onto them. If an Accommodation is truly good, I want to write a Review properly. So even though I left feeling positive, receiving that long email felt like being pressured again afterward, which was disappointing. It feels like such a waste. I hadn’t experienced this at other NIPPONIA properties—so perhaps it reflects this staff’s approach—but since it’s such a great business and an excellent Hotel overall, I wish they could be more confident without pushing so hard. If there weren’t such excessive prompting for Reviews, I would consider staying again.

    It’s a wonderful place after all!

    Thank you so much for kindly and sincerely accommodating me even though I had mistakenly booked the wrong dates. Ise Jingu was a place I had always wanted to visit, and through a wonderful connection I found this Accommodation. I truly feel it was meant to be. It was also our children’s first time staying in a traditional Japanese house, and they were thrilled. We were able to relax in the spacious, warm atmosphere—it felt like coming home to my parents’ house. We had such a lovely time. Thank you again. Everyone, please do come and stay here! I will definitely stay again. I’ll keep working hard while looking forward to the day we can return. And people in Mie Prefecture are truly warm-hearted—our taxi driver, shop staff, and everyone at the Accommodation were all kind and welcoming.     Stay in a charming traditional storehouse and experience its history and culture.

    About a 10-minute walk from Iseshi Station. It’s on the opposite side from the Geku (Outer Shrine) exit. This was my first time using that side, and I was told that more than 90% of visitors head toward the Geku approach, so relatively few people come this way. Once you enter the town of Ise-Kawasaki, the atmosphere changes completely. Storehouses line the riverside, creating a wonderfully charming scene. The Hotel is located within this area, and because the whole town functions as an Accommodation, there is a consistent feel to everything, including the front desk and lodging buildings. This time we stayed in a Room called “Seisho,” which was more than spacious enough—very quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was also extremely satisfying. Respecting the tradition of “Shinsen,” meals offered to the deities of Ise Jingu, it is arranged in a modern style. For rice you can choose from white rice, rice porridge, or tamago-kake gohan (rice with raw egg), and you can also order lobster miso soup as an add-on. I ate plenty even in the morning, yet it was a gentle breakfast that sat well. Despite today’s widespread staff shortages—when many Accommodations struggle to provide attentive service—the Hotel staff here were outstanding, which truly impressed me. Hearing about how Ise-Kawasaki developed also helped me understand Ise Jingu more deeply. It was an Accommodation that soothed weary travelers on their pilgrimage to Ise. Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality.

    A Wonderful Time

    All the Hotel staff were wonderful, and we truly enjoyed hearing about the history of Ise Jingu, the Hotel’s concept, and introductions to the town—it left a great impression. We could really feel how much they value Ise’s history, local ingredients unique to the region, and their desire to preserve this town and area for the future. It was a very special experience that clearly came through to us as guests. The interior has been modernized while making use of traditional shop buildings and storehouses. At the same time, it is designed as a relaxing place where everyone can enjoy conversation and soak in the atmosphere. Most of the amenities and in-room drinks were locally sourced and all complimentary, which was excellent. Also highly praised by my wife, me, and our children was breakfast. The offerings—prepared in a style suitable for presentation before the gods while respecting Ise traditions yet tailored to modern tastes—were outstandingly delicious. Our children loved it so much they even asked for seconds in the morning, so we were completely satisfied. When we visit Ise Jingu again, this will be one of our top choices of Hotel to stay at.

    Girls’ Trip

    We had a very relaxing stay in a comfortable Room. There was no TV, so at first I was surprised, but it led to lots of great conversation with my friend—this kind of evening is nice too. The male staff member who explained everything at check-in was very clear and easy to understand. By the way, on my first visit to Ise Grand Shrine, I got to see two sacred horses.

    A New Experience: Stay in a Traditional Meiji-Era Home

    This was my first time staying with NIPPONIA. I stayed in a sukiya-style renovated traditional house called KAMIJI 401 (Kamiji), originally built in 1886 as the residence of a long-established wholesaler. The Room has been carefully refurbished to preserve the original character of the house. The bedroom feels so open that you forget you’re in a Japanese-style room. For me, in my 60s, it was both nostalgic and refreshingly new. NIPPONIA HOTEL Ise Kawasaki Merchant Town offers breakfast only and does not serve dinner, but there are plenty of eateries and restaurants within a 10–15 minute walk, so there’s no need to worry. I walked about 15 minutes from the Hotel to a bistro near Ise Jingu (Geku) for dinner. Breakfast is Japanese cuisine featuring local ingredients—and it’s delicious. The gentle seasoning is satisfying without feeling heavy, and the portion size is just right. Rice, red miso soup with aonori seaweed—nothing flashy, but each dish is quietly memorable. I don’t expect many people work while traveling, but the Wi‑Fi was fast and reliable. There’s no TV in the Room, so I wished I had brought a portable speaker.
