    Tranquility

    We enjoyed a peaceful stay in a private house—inside a traditional storehouse. On the evening of our arrival, we were able to take a walk to Ise Jingu Geku Shrine and visit it. Even in August, visits are possible at 5:00 p.m., and we were thrilled to experience the calm atmosphere of Geku before sunset. This wonderful experience was only possible because the Accommodation was within walking distance of Geku. We would love to stay here again for our next visit.

    A cozy accommodation where you’ll want to stay longer

    My first visit to Ise. Since it was a special trip, I wanted to stay at a wonderful Accommodation, and while searching I found NIPPONIA HOTEL Ise Kawasaki Merchant Town. I also checked Instagram in advance, and the atmosphere looked so lovely that I was excited even before our stay. At check-in, the staff explained Ise Grand Shrine and the merchant town of Kawasaki very carefully and clearly. My middle-school-aged son listened with great interest, and we were able to learn together as a family. The staff member who assisted us was very kind and greeted us with a wonderful smile, which left a strong impression. The chilled Ise tea and salted yokan served during the explanation were also delicious. Thank you very much. We were told the Accommodation is in a building built in the early Meiji period, so we could truly feel its history during our stay. Not only was the Room spacious, but everything—from the spotless bathroom to the bath salts and complimentary drinks—showed thoughtful attention to detail, making our time there extremely comfortable. And what impressed me most was the Room’s ceiling. It’s hard to put into words, but as I looked up at it, I felt an indescribably wonderful sense of briefly touching the lives of those who once lived there. The atmosphere of this historic building and the warm hospitality from all of your staff were both exceptional—an Accommodation that made me think, “I want to stay here again.” Even at check-out, thank you so much for seeing us off warmly until the very end. Thanks to this Accommodation, my first visit to Ise became an even more memorable experience. When we visit Ise again, we would love to stay here.

    Thank you for a wonderful time.

    During our stay, the staff’s hospitality was truly outstanding, and we are sincerely grateful. They kindly and flexibly consulted with us about the early-morning visit and breakfast times, and they were happy to accommodate sudden changes. There is no TV in the Room, but the quietness was actually very comfortable, and we enjoyed a much-needed digital detox. The sounds of insects and cicadas in the early morning made our trip even more enriching. The Room, making beautiful use of a traditional kura storehouse, blends history and modern comfort seamlessly—our stay itself felt like a special experience. We were also deeply comforted by your thoughtful gesture of providing “Misogi-no-Yu” for guests who are unable to visit Futami Okitama Shrine before praying at Ise Jingu. If we have the opportunity, we would love to return again next time. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time!

    It was a wonderful Hotel!

    I was looking for a Hotel to stay at for a visit to Ise Grand Shrine and found this place. The Room had a traditional Japanese feel, and it was nostalgic and very relaxing. The staff were warm and kind to our child as well, which made us very happy. I thought it might be a Hotel mainly for international guests, but it’s also a wonderful choice for Japanese guests. Everything at breakfast was delicious, and the optional egg-over-rice was outstanding! If I have the chance to visit Ise again, I’d love to stay here again. I’m also curious about the other Rooms. Thank you very much!

    We traveled to Ise t...

    We traveled to Ise to celebrate my mother’s birthday at her request, and stayed at this Ryokan. The Room was a renovated storehouse, full of character—a wonderful space and a truly memorable experience. We only had breakfast, but enjoyed a morning meal inspired by the “Mike” breakfast, which made us feel enriched from the start of the day. There are also many appealing restaurants nearby, so choosing dinner is easy. It’s within walking distance of Geku Shrine as well—an excellent Accommodation with a calm atmosphere.

    It was a wonderful Hotel.

    I stayed for one night starting May 1. It was a wonderful building that blends beautifully into the streetscape of Kawasaki. From check-in, the staff were very courteous, and I really appreciated having my luggage carried to my Room. The next day I planned to visit Ise Jingu (Naiku) early in the morning, and they kindly told me the bus schedule as well. They also explained the Kawasaki area around the Hotel in detail, which was very helpful. This time I stayed in a kura-style Room. The open atrium ceiling and impressive beams—rarely seen these days—made me wonder if they have been preserved from the original period. At the same time, the bath and washbasin areas have been comfortably renovated; the Room was spotless and very clean, with plenty of amenities, so there was absolutely no inconvenience. Tea, coffee, and drinks in the refrigerator were also free of charge, so I don’t think you would ever feel short of anything. Because I went out right after check-in and again early on day two, it’s a shame I didn’t get to enjoy what was in the fridge! Breakfast featured dishes unique to Ise; both the portion size and flavor were excellent, and I happily finished everything. It was also nice that a small serving of Ise udon was included. Although my stay was mainly for visiting Ise Jingu, this trip introduced me to “Kawasaki” for the first time. It isn’t a complicated area, but receiving a neighborhood map was perfect for an after-check-in stroll, and it also helped when choosing a place for dinner. Since it isn’t an Accommodation right next to the station, I hesitated when making my Reservation because I wondered if it might be far… but it wasn’t a distance that bothered me at all on foot. If anything, it became an opportunity to discover Kawasaki, and I’m glad I could stay at such a great Hotel. They kindly stored my luggage after checkout as well, and when I came back to pick it up they spoke warmly to me—I felt comfortable until the very end. While preserving this traditional building and townscape, once you step inside you’ll find a clean and comfortable space—an excellent Hotel indeed. I was also impressed by service that conveyed how much they value Ise’s history and culture. I spent quite a lot of time out this trip, but since it is such a lovely Hotel, next time I'd like to relax more slowly inside my Room as well. Thank you very much.

    A Cherished Home in Japan

    To coincide with my first visit to Ise in a while, I stayed at a NIPPONIA Accommodation for the first time. I strolled around Kawasaki, lined with old houses, and had dinner at a nearby sushi restaurant. At the Accommodation, I was once again impressed by how thoughtfully traditional Japanese homes are designed—even down to a single skylight. The next morning, I visited Geku Shrine early before breakfast. The red miso soup was so delicious that I couldn’t help having seconds. Highly recommended among Accommodations in Ise. Thank you very much.

    Learn from the Kojiki—what a discovery!

    Thanks to the generous guidance from the front desk staff, I revisited the “Kojiki” for the first time in years and felt as if I were traveling back to the very beginnings of Japan. With their help, I was also able to enjoy the town’s many highlights efficiently, making it a truly fulfilling trip. On the way home, I even spotted clouds shaped like an ascending dragon! The Accommodation also had a wonderful sense of history, and the soothing scent of wood was very relaxing. The spiny lobster miso soup and egg-over-rice were both delicious. Both front desk staff members were courteous, and it was clear how carefully they look after this Hotel, which left a great impression on me. I would love to visit again.     A unique stay experience in harmony with the local community

    It was a truly wonderful stay. The Accommodation was very clean, and we were able to relax in great comfort. The space, making the most of a historic traditional house, felt calm and offered a special experience away from everyday life. What impressed us even more was how much care is given to the local community. We were moved by the commitment to showcasing the area’s charm while preserving its streetscape and culture. The staff were kind, attentive, and welcoming, which made us feel at ease throughout our stay. Not only the Accommodation itself, but also exploring the surrounding area made for a highly satisfying experience. This is a fantastic Accommodation that we would love to stay at again.

    A Visit to Ise Grand Shrine

    The facilities are good, but the location is not ideal. Also, since this is a renovated traditional house, the ceilings are low and I bumped my head several times. As it’s not a mountain hut, I would have liked to have a TV.

    From Futami Okitama Shrine to Ise Jingu (Geku and Naiku) and Kongoshoji Temple

    From this Accommodation, you can enjoy the full Ise pilgrimage course—visiting not only Ise Grand Shrine but also Futami Okitama Shrine and Kongosho-ji Temple. We stayed for two nights. On our first day driving from Yokohama to Ise, we visited Futami Okitama Shrine. When we checked in that evening and spoke with the front desk staff about our plans for the next day, they recommended an early-morning visit to Ise Grand Shrine (Geku), which turned out to be a great decision. Thanks to that, we were able to take our time exploring a route that included Naiku, Okage Yokocho, and Kongosho-ji Temple. The front desk staff were very knowledgeable—not only about Ise but also about Kumano, which was our next destination—and their advice was extremely helpful. The Room, renovated from an old merchant house, felt almost too spacious for two people. Since this Accommodation makes use of renovated old homes and storehouses, there are some drawbacks such as less-than-ideal layout flow and occasional drafts through gaps. Even so, it is still highly recommended as a base for visiting Ise. Around the Room there are many old shops and houses that let you feel the history of Kawasakicho. We only had breakfast, but it was beautifully presented with thoughtful seasoning and good use of local ingredients—you can really sense the care put into the food. The small serving of Ise udon was also well seasoned and very satisfying. Recommended for anyone planning visits to shrines and temples around Ise.

    A Relaxing and Rejuvenating One-Night Stay

    As this was my first trip to Ise, I wanted to stay somewhere special, so I chose NIPPONIA. The attentive service and hospitality, the refined and calming guest room that preserves the atmosphere of the kura storehouse, and the breakfast concept and flavors—everything was truly wonderful. The Hotel is about a 10-minute walk in the opposite direction from the approach to the shrine. The merchant town has a different charm in the morning and at night, and the river flowing nearby is peaceful—I would have loved to take a stroll along it if time had allowed. The guest room was very clean, and within the rustic feel of kura architecture and wood, you can sense a sophisticated design. Amenities were just right, with drinks provided in the refrigerator as well—everything was thoughtfully prepared. There is also a convenience store very close by, which was reassuring. I had not a single complaint—it was hard to leave. I would love to stay here again when I visit Ise.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    There isn’t much around the area, but I was able to relax at the Accommodation as intended. The Room was spacious and comfortable. Everything was spotless, and while breakfast is simple, it’s delicious. Above all, I felt the professionalism of the staff who assisted us. I’d like to stay at another Accommodation in the same series as well.

    It was a wonderful trip.

    From check-in, we received a thoughtful explanation of Ise Grand Shrine, which was very informative and really heightened our excitement for the visit. The Room was very clean, and the bath was made of hinoki cypress with a wonderful fragrance—so relaxing. The surroundings were quiet, and it felt like stepping back in time.     I think this is a wonderful project that makes great use of a renovated traditional Japanese house.

    I’ve stayed at several NIPPONIA Hotels, but this one felt different—perhaps because a different designer was involved—so it had a distinct atmosphere. Personally, I preferred places like Tamba-Sasayama, where the design makes better use of traditional houses. Even though it was quite a cold season, the sleepwear had three-quarter sleeves and felt chilly. Since it’s a traditional house, I think more consideration would be appreciated. This Hotel offers breakfast only, but the food was very delicious. However, regarding Reviews: I was asked multiple times during my stay, and even after returning home I received a long email requesting a Review, which put me off. That long email is overly persistent. I’m sure there are good intentions behind it, but if guests feel they had a good stay, there’s no need to push information onto them. If an Accommodation is truly good, I want to write a Review properly. So even though I left feeling positive, receiving that long email felt like being pressured again afterward, which was disappointing. It feels like such a waste. I hadn’t experienced this at other NIPPONIA properties—so perhaps it reflects this staff’s approach—but since it’s such a great business and an excellent Hotel overall, I wish they could be more confident without pushing so hard. If there weren’t such excessive prompting for Reviews, I would consider staying again.

    It’s a wonderful place after all!

    Thank you so much for kindly and sincerely accommodating me even though I had mistakenly booked the wrong dates. Ise Jingu was a place I had always wanted to visit, and through a wonderful connection I found this Accommodation. I truly feel it was meant to be. It was also our children’s first time staying in a traditional Japanese house, and they were thrilled. We were able to relax in the spacious, warm atmosphere—it felt like coming home to my parents’ house. We had such a lovely time. Thank you again. Everyone, please do come and stay here! I will definitely stay again. I’ll keep working hard while looking forward to the day we can return. And people in Mie Prefecture are truly warm-hearted—our taxi driver, shop staff, and everyone at the Accommodation were all kind and welcoming. They were great to talk with and taught us many things; it was a wonderful learning experience. Thank you very much.

    Stay in a charming traditional storehouse and experience its history and culture.

    About a 10-minute walk from Iseshi Station. It’s on the opposite side from the Geku (Outer Shrine) exit. This was my first time using that side, and I was told that more than 90% of visitors head toward the Geku approach, so relatively few people come this way. Once you enter the town of Ise-Kawasaki, the atmosphere changes completely. Storehouses line the riverside, creating a wonderfully charming scene. The Hotel is located within this area, and because the whole town functions as an Accommodation, there is a consistent feel to everything, including the front desk and lodging buildings. This time we stayed in a Room called “Seisho,” which was more than spacious enough—very quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was also extremely satisfying. Respecting the tradition of “Shinsen,” meals offered to the deities of Ise Jingu, it is arranged in a modern style. For rice you can choose from white rice, rice porridge, or tamago-kake gohan (rice with raw egg), and you can also order lobster miso soup as an add-on. I ate plenty even in the morning, yet it was a gentle breakfast that sat well. Despite today’s widespread staff shortages—when many Accommodations struggle to provide attentive service—the Hotel staff here were outstanding, which truly impressed me. Hearing about how Ise-Kawasaki developed also helped me understand Ise Jingu more deeply. It was an Accommodation that soothed weary travelers on their pilgrimage to Ise.     A Wonderful Time

    All the Hotel staff were wonderful, and we truly enjoyed hearing about the history of Ise Jingu, the Hotel’s concept, and introductions to the town—it left a great impression. We could really feel how much they value Ise’s history, local ingredients unique to the region, and their desire to preserve this town and area for the future. It was a very special experience that clearly came through to us as guests. The interior has been modernized while making use of traditional shop buildings and storehouses. At the same time, it is designed as a relaxing place where everyone can enjoy conversation and soak in the atmosphere. Most of the amenities and in-room drinks were locally sourced and all complimentary, which was excellent. Also highly praised by my wife, me, and our children was breakfast. The offerings—prepared in a style suitable for presentation before the gods while respecting Ise traditions yet tailored to modern tastes—were outstandingly delicious. Our children loved it so much they even asked for seconds in the morning, so we were completely satisfied. When we visit Ise Jingu again, this will be one of our top choices of Hotel to stay at.

    Girls’ Trip

    We had a very relaxing stay in a comfortable Room. There was no TV, so at first I was surprised, but it led to lots of great conversation with my friend—this kind of evening is nice too. The male staff member who explained everything at check-in was very clear and easy to understand. By the way, on my first visit to Ise Grand Shrine, I got to see two sacred horses.

    A New Experience: Stay in a Traditional Meiji-Era Home

    This was my first time staying with NIPPONIA. I stayed in a sukiya-style renovated traditional house called KAMIJI 401 (Kamiji), originally built in 1886 as the residence of a long-established wholesaler. The Room has been carefully refurbished to preserve the original character of the house. The bedroom feels so open that you forget you’re in a Japanese-style room. For me, in my 60s, it was both nostalgic and refreshingly new. NIPPONIA HOTEL Ise Kawasaki Merchant Town offers breakfast only and does not serve dinner, but there are plenty of eateries and restaurants within a 10–15 minute walk, so there’s no need to worry. I walked about 15 minutes from the Hotel to a bistro near Ise Jingu (Geku) for dinner. Breakfast is Japanese cuisine featuring local ingredients—and it’s delicious. The gentle seasoning is satisfying without feeling heavy, and the portion size is just right. Rice, red miso soup with aonori seaweed—nothing flashy, but each dish is quietly memorable. I don’t expect many people work while traveling, but the Wi‑Fi was fast and reliable. There’s no TV in the Room, so I wished I had brought a portable speaker.

    Used for a visit to Ise Shrine

    It was a very clean and spacious Room renovated from a historic storehouse. It’s the smallest Room, but more than satisfying for two people. The front desk is on the second floor, but we were not bothered by noise at all, even though we were concerned about it. Since we chose a Plan with breakfast, we enjoyed dinner at a nearby restaurant with great Reviews—excellent.

    The worst accommodation

    Arrived before 3:00 p.m. Checked in at a renovated traditional house described as the front desk. I was served Ise tea and a small cube-shaped piece of salted yokan. Then I walked 7–8 minutes to the scattered Accommodation houses. On the way, a manager-like man guided me, explaining local stories while carrying my suitcase. The area has an old streetscape with narrow roads, and cars occasionally pass by. After entering the house, I was shown to the only nearby home-style café for a light snack, but it didn’t appeal to me. I walked back with him to the front building and then went on foot to the nearest FamilyMart to buy food and drinking water. I was told it is also the only place nearby with a designated smoking area. Back at the house, I found there was no TV, no radio, and no clock (neither tabletop nor wall). There was also no hand soap or bar soap in the washroom, and no tissues either. A smartphone had been left on a stand near the living-room refrigerator and drink service mirror. After turning it on, I was told that contacting the Hotel front desk should be done through an app on this phone, and that after 8:00 p.m. there would be no staff at the front building—so this smartphone should be used if anything was needed. When I tried to take a bath—turning on hot water at the washbasin first—and started filling the tub as well, I returned to find there was no hot water from the washbasin tap. When I called via smartphone right away, the same manager-like man came over and explained that hot water for the washbasin is stored in an internal tank, so if you run it for too long it turns into cold water. He looked apologetic. I did not make any Reservation for dinner or breakfast—No Meals Included. The building is a converted old storehouse with bedrooms upstairs. The ceiling beams and walls use original timber in what feels like a typical traditional-house renovation style; in the living room there were an uncomfortable sofa and armchairs around a small round table. The next morning, as instructed the day before, I called reception about my luggage pickup and was told they would come get it—but when I tried using that smartphone again, some unknown app launched by itself and began downloading something unclear. I then tried calling NIPPONIA HOTEL from my own phone (a toll-free number), but was told that 9:00 a.m. is outside business hours—so I carried my suitcase to reception myself. While waiting for a taxi, I complained about these issues. When asked about this Hotel’s concept, they spoke about company policies such as “revitalizing the town,” but I said that may be their perspective rather than something meaningful from a guest’s point of view—and concluded by saying I would never stay again.

    A Beautiful, Clean Traditional Japanese House Accommodation—Perfect for Families with Children

    We stayed in Room 501 with our 2-year-old child. Since it’s in the front building, we were a bit concerned about noise, but it didn’t bother us at all. In fact, it was a plus for us as a family because we could get to the breakfast venue without going outside. The staff were polite and wonderful, with just the right level of attentiveness. They also kindly accommodated an early check-in, which was very helpful. The Room was spacious, clean, and beautiful. The amenities—especially the shampoo and skincare products—smelled great, and we had a very comfortable stay. From a parent’s perspective: It was convenient that we could leave our stroller on the first floor, and it was also great that the Room had no indoor stairs and was completely flat. One thing we noticed: The provided bath additive didn’t smell very pleasant and the water turned quite dark. Perhaps because of that additive, some black residue remained in the bathtub. Since everything else in the Room was so clean, this part was disappointing. Overall, we had a comfortable stay and would like to consider staying at another property as well!

    A wonderful Hotel

    After an unexpected incident, we arrived late for check-in and entered feeling anxious, but the staff treated us with great care and courtesy. The conversation was truly enjoyable, and since it was our first time sightseeing in Ise, they sincerely listened to our questions and helped us out, which made us feel very welcomed. We booked a No Meals Included Plan, but the Room was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. We were told it might be cold, but it didn’t feel cold at all. The bath was an indoor bath surrounded by wood, and the complimentary bath salts were a perfect match—after walking in the cold weather, my chilled body warmed up to the core. I honestly wanted to soak one more time (haha). The free juices and other drinks were also well stocked and fun to enjoy. There was no TV, which actually made it even better—we could simply enjoy talking with friends and take our time planning our trip in a relaxed atmosphere. In the morning, the sunlight streaming into the Room was beautiful as well. We couldn’t stay as long as we wanted, which was a shame, but we had such a happy time that we’d love to visit another Ryokan in your group next time.     Sunrise

    We stayed here as a couple around our 60th birthday. The NIPPONIA Facility beautifully preserves the charm of a traditional Japanese house while being tastefully updated with modern touches, and we were very satisfied. It is also close to Ise Grand Shrine, and we were truly happy to have the wonderful experience of seeing the sunrise. Thank you very much.

    This accommodation is a renovated warehouse. This time, we stayed in the entire building. We chose this accommodation near Geku for an overnight stay to fully experience the pilgrimage route to Ise Jingu for our New Year's visit. Although it was within walking distance to Geku, we drove there as parking was available. The staff provided prior information about New Year's traffic regulations and nearby dining options since dinner was not included, making it easy to plan and enjoy a smooth stay without confusion. For dinner, we made a reservation at a nearby Italian restaurant and walked there. Though it was dark at night, the old townscape had such a charming atmosphere that I wished I could have explored it despite the cold if time allowed. The restaurant offered only their New Year's course menu but was also housed in another beautifully renovated warehouse with an amazing ambiance. The food was delicious and enjoyable. The hotel's breakfast featured dishes respecting the traditions of Shinsen (sacred offerings), allowing us to experience Ise Jingu through taste as well—it was incredibly delicious. We would love to stay here again for our next New Year’s visit! Highly recommended!

    The renovated Room, originally a footwear wholesaler's warehouse, was absolutely charming. We appreciated the wheelchair provided for my mother with mobility issues, which allowed us to enjoy a refreshing early morning stroll through the town.     Accommodation supporting your pilgrimage to Ise.

    We stayed in Room 301 as a family. The spacious and wonderful layout allowed us to enjoy both the openness and solidity of the traditional storehouse design. It would be even better if there were an additional humidifier near the bedside, especially for the second floor with its open ceiling, which tends to get quite dry. The breakfast was delicious with a gentle flavor, perfect for our tired bodies. At the front desk, we received detailed guidance about visiting Ise Shrine, which was very helpful for us as we were unfamiliar with the area. The courteous service showed great care for travelers like us. Highly recommended accommodation!
