    Third stay

Just a short walk from Nagahama Station, with Lake Biwa right in front—an excellent location. Nagahama Castle is also very close, and you can see the castle from the Room. There is also an open-air bath, perfect for relaxing and relieving fatigue. The meals include dishes associated with Nagahama as well as Matsusaka beef, making for a very satisfying dining experience. The sunset seen from the restaurant was breathtaking, coloring the shores of Lake Biwa. As a place connected to the Taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers,” and with many nearby attractions such as Kurokabe Square and Chikubu Island, it made for a truly fulfilling trip.

The lounge is excellent. Not recommended for guests with sensitive teeth.

This is a very clean Hotel with convenient access to tourist spots in eastern Shiga Prefecture, such as Kurokabe Square. The standout feature is the lounge. You can enjoy soft drinks, alcohol, and snacks, and honestly this service alone makes it worth staying. However, for elderly guests or anyone with weak teeth, the snacks are all quite hard. I would appreciate it if softer, salty snacks were also provided, or if only those guests could be allowed to bring in a small amount of their own snacks... In any case, I can’t recommend it for people with weak teeth. Otherwise, I do recommend it. In addition to these points, there is also an Onsen (it is diluted), and there are various Room types to choose from—from Japanese-style rooms to Western-style rooms—so it’s especially recommended for families. The breakfast buffet was not just the bare minimum; it was generous and tasted great. I did feel many items were seasoned a bit on the salty side, but there were also options that weren’t, so it wasn’t an issue. The Room seemed well soundproofed—I didn’t notice any noise from next door at all. You can hear children being noisy from the hallway a little at times, but it wasn’t bothersome. Overall, this is an excellent Accommodation and I would definitely like to stay again.

    First-time guest

What was disappointing - Reserved via a travel Reservation site. I had reserved a Japanese-style room, but was shown to a Western-style room. After contacting the front desk, they changed it to a Japanese-style room. The staff were very courteous, but it took about 20 minutes, and I had planned to bathe before dinner, so I ended up short on time and was disappointed. - It seemed very windy at night; perhaps there was a gap in the window, as wind came in through it and the whistling noise woke me up. - It was very disappointing that beer wasn’t available in the night lounge—I was really looking forward to a beer after the bath. - There are far too few hair dryers and sinks in the large public bath for the number of guests. Women also need time for skincare, so I think about twice as many are needed. Also, if you could provide better hair dryers, drying time would likely be shorter. - Part of the washing area in the large public bath had no mirror or light and was dark and hard to see, which was very inconvenient. What was good - Although it only stops on limited floors, having an extra elevator available temporarily was very helpful. - The building is old, but it was well cleaned and I could stay comfortably. - All staff members were kind. - I’m glad I could enjoy local cuisine. I would like to stay again if I have another opportunity.

    Second stay

When I visited last summer, the Room was a bit disappointing. The bath and toilet were together, and there was a large step, which was tough for me because I have trouble with my legs. However, the Room we stayed in this time was Room 1031—it was clean, had a great view, and the toilet and bath were separate. Most of all, it really helped that the toilet area had no step. I’m glad I could relax. Regarding the buffet: when you hand out meal cards, how about asking guests to return their dishes? Most people do tidy up, but I saw some tables left messy as they were. It must be hard for the staff, and it also slows down table turnover. Thank you very much for two wonderful days.

    Same as usual.

I’ve lost count of how many Grand Mercure properties I’ve stayed at. As usual, there was nothing in particular to complain about, but nothing especially impressive either. I’m planning to stay at all of them. The sukiyaki (?) was delicious. Grand Mercure Nagahama was great because there are plenty of sightseeing spots nearby, making it easy to get around.

    The location was great.

It was within walking distance from Nagahama Station, and we could stroll to Nagahama Castle and along the shores of Lake Biwa. I have stayed at several other Mercure hotels, but this one felt like the Room quality and service did not match the price. Both check-in and meal service were behind schedule, and the staff did not smile. However, the Onsen staff and the housekeeping staff for the Room stopped to greet us properly, which left a very good impression. I hope the front-line service staff can learn from them.

We stayed here on a family trip. We checked in around 4:30 PM and were surprised that the parking lot was almost full. (There was an overflow parking area, so it seemed there was still plenty of space.) When we entered the Hotel, about 10 people were lined up for check-in, and the lounge was very lively as well—it really showed how popular this place is. Since it’s all-inclusive, we didn’t need to stop by a convenience store beforehand, and we were very satisfied to be able to enjoy whatever we wanted as much as we liked. I also personally appreciated that there were water dispensers on every floor. The bath lounge and changing area were clean and spacious, so even though there were quite a few guests, it never felt crowded and we could relax comfortably. We also enjoyed table tennis and air hockey; there was a time limit, but they could be used without a Reservation. We’d love to stay again.

I was a little worried, but

My brother stayed in March, and it was so crowded that he could barely eat. He couldn’t go back for seconds and said he never wanted to go again—it was like being stranded without food. He even ate outside after checking out in the morning, so I was very worried this time. However, it wasn’t that crowded, and we were able to enjoy our meals properly. If it stays like this, I’d like to come again.

Would you like to use the paid parking?

Great location and good value for money. However, the parking lot is paid (500 yen). There is also free parking, but it is farther away and fills up quickly. You sometimes see paid parking at Hotels in crowded city areas, but charging for parking at a rural resort seems questionable.

    Girls’ trip

This was my first time staying at an all-inclusive Hotel. Perhaps because it was a weekend, I was surprised by the long line at check-in—it was my first time experiencing that despite having stayed elsewhere before. The lounge offered alcohol, soft drinks, snacks, and sweets, but nothing stood out as especially tasty or satisfying. It may be fine for those who enjoy drinking. Since this is not an Onsen Accommodation, the large public bath is not very spacious, and the buffet selection also felt limited. Considering the price, I suppose it can’t be helped. The Room was decent overall, but it felt like a slightly better Business Hotel. The Hotel staff were kind and helpful.

This was my first stay, but if I visit Nagahama again, I will definitely want to stay here! With breakfast included and an 11th-floor lake-view room at this price—and on top of that, unlimited juice, beer, and other alcoholic drinks in the lounge. I don’t drink, but my friend who traveled with me was really happy. This time I booked this Hotel in Nagahama to visit Chikubu Island as part of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The ferry terminal is nearby, Nagahama Castle is within walking distance, and Lake Biwa is right in front of the Hotel, so we could enjoy a beautiful sunset. I also found many other places in Nagahama that I’d like to visit next time, so I hope to stay here again when I return. Thank you very much.

    The neighboring Room is noisy.

The Room was spacious and comfortable because I used a twin Room by myself. Maybe it was a group in the neighboring Room? They slammed the toilet door at 2:00 and 3:00 a.m., which woke me up. I wish they would be more considerate, leaving it slightly open and closing it quietly. I could hear the gas noise from the bath early in the morning, and because many people were using it, I couldn’t sleep for a long time.

[Golden Week Use] Not recommended for those who prefer to avoid crowds.

Because we stayed during Golden Week, this Hotel has about 500 Rooms and all Rooms came with lounge access, so the lounge was essentially first-come, first-served and not everyone could relax there (snacks and drinks from the lounge cannot be taken back to your Room). My wife was furious because, even though it was Golden Week, she said it was the first time she had ever seen people lining up naked at the washing area in a public bath. The in-Room bath is about the size of a Business Hotel unit bathroom with toilet, so I would like to see another large public bath added or (I understand work-style reforms may be a factor) extended public-bath hours. The amenities in the public bath were also limited—there was only one set of lotion—and since the Room amenities were basically just a toothbrush, I felt they should increase them. We stayed three nights (Multiple Night Stay), but the meals were the same each day, which was disappointing. The live kitchen offered only one meat item and one dessert item; I didn’t find the meat to be good quality or tasty. The sashimi and rice were good. I don’t drink alcohol, so I would like better-quality coffee. At the restaurant, my key card was accidentally cleared away together with a napkin. When I reported it to staff, they didn’t seem to know how to handle it at first, but once they called a manager/supervisor we received truly top-class service. On another occasion when noodle soup ran out and I spoke to live-kitchen staff, I was told “That’s not my responsibility,” which was disappointing—though it also made me feel that staff training must be challenging for this Hotel. The elevators were crowded due to Golden Week; extra elevators were running temporarily but we still used stairs for about half of our trips. Room cleaning is once every three days; towels and toothbrushes were provided daily, but yukata robes were not included so we had to ask each time for them to be brought up. Since I don’t drink alcohol (and I’m sorry to say this), even including our Room plus meals and lounge access, it felt overpriced for us. If you don’t mind crowds and you drink a lot of alcohol, I would recommend it. Requests: clearer guidance at the bath entrance (e.g., better signage after entering before splitting into men/women); more washing stations; more space in the changing area (like municipal pool lockers). At breakfast/dinner service areas: improve traffic flow by breaking up lines (if someone is slow/inexperienced it creates long queues), and place seasonings/condiments in more than one location instead of only near specific dishes. For Multiple Night Stay guests: start public-bath hours before check-in time. Please vary some dishes or live-kitchen items by day. Also, our Room air conditioning did not work well; an insect screen on the window would help.

    The meals are outstanding!

The dining menu was extensive. There was a wide variety of dishes made with local ingredients, and we were very satisfied. The bath was also spacious and comfortable. When we visit Shiga again, we would like to stay here again.

    Room cleaning and other services.

Room cleaning was not very good. There was hair on the mirror and on the floor. The Room gets very dry, so it would be better to have a humidifier.

    I stayed for multiple nights.

I think this Hotel is ideally located for a Sengoku-period trip and exploring the Kohoku area—from Makino’s tree-lined avenue to Lake Yogo, Shizugatake, and on to Odani Castle and Azuchi. Parking is 500 yen per night and available for up to 30 hours, so if you stay two nights you can leave your car parked while visiting Nagahama Castle, strolling around town, and touring temples and shrines as you like. Meals were buffet-style; the menu was creative and everything tasted great. The sashimi and sweet shrimp were especially delicious. It seems to be a popular Hotel—the lounge and elevators were extremely crowded. The Room was spacious, and I could relax. The indoor bath in the large public bath was a little lukewarm. But overall I was satisfied with the Facility. The lobby staff were very professional and kind. For example, a non-Japanese staff member at the lobby told me about local sightseeing spots. Thank you very much.

    The bath is amazing.

Last year we went to Awaji, and this time I visited Shiga with my three sons. The dining venues were separated, which was a bit inconvenient. I would have liked a little more dessert. The lounge was very nice, so overall we were satisfied.

    Excellent value for money!

My husband and I stayed on April 22. We chose this Hotel for a trip to celebrate his birthday, and we had a wonderful time. We had previously stayed at Mercure in Takayama last year and loved it, so when searching around Omihachiman and Nagahama, this was the first Hotel we considered. With a Lake Biwa view, a spacious 36 m² twin Room, a large public bath, and lounge access—all at an affordable price—there was no reason not to choose it. After watching videos of the Hotel on YouTube, I learned that the Lake-view Standard Twin Rooms have been renovated and feature separate toilet, bath/shower area, and washbasin. That’s why we chose the Standard Twin instead of the Classic Twin. I also found out that corner Rooms offer views of both Lake Biwa and Toyoko Park (Nagahama Castle). Since it was my husband’s birthday trip, I requested a corner Room—and our request was granted. The Room and the view were fantastic. We were also delighted to receive a message card addressed to my husband. In fact, when we once stayed at an Accommodation in Izu (a fairly upscale place), there was even a field to enter our birthday information. However, despite it being his actual birthday that day, no one said anything at all. We weren’t expecting any special service—just a simple “Happy Birthday”—so it was disappointing. Because of that experience, Mercure’s thoughtful gesture meant even more to us. This time we wanted to eat out, so we booked No Meals Included; therefore I can’t comment on dining. However, since lounge access was included, we enjoyed alcohol as well as Japanese sweets and snacks. As it was a weekday it wasn’t very crowded, so we could relax comfortably—it was really nice. The indoor bath in the large public bath didn’t seem to be Onsen water, but the brown-colored water in the open-air bath “Nagahama Taiko Onsen” was excellent.

    Second Visit

This was my second visit, one year after the first. The first time was shortly after opening, but over the past year the services seem to have been reviewed; meals are now served in assigned time slots, which made everything run smoothly. There were also Shiga specialties, and the menu is so extensive that one stomach isn’t enough. Dishes are replenished quickly, so you can always choose what you feel like eating without hesitation. With an all-inclusive plan and lounge access included, there was a wide variety of alcoholic drinks and I was very satisfied. If I had to ask for more, it would be perfect if draft beer could be served in glasses—but considering the number of guests, I understand that may not be feasible. It was a wonderful stay.

Mercure offers great value for money!

I stayed at Mercure Ise-Shima in February, Mercure Kushimoto in March, and Mercure Lake Biwa in April. The breakfast and dinner buffets use local ingredients from each Hotel’s area, and I always enjoy them. I had also stayed at all three properties back when they were Daiwa, and I feel everything has been upgraded. One small disappointment at Lake Biwa was that the TV stand and safe in the room were quite old and worn. I was also surprised that the Hotel parking lot is paid.

Not recommended. I won’t be coming back.

I was really looking forward to this stay, but I had many complaints. Dissatisfaction level: 100 When I called the front desk to request missing items, I was told to come pick them up at the front desk. This was a first for me among all the Hotels I have stayed at. Dissatisfaction level: 100 Because our arrival was late, we couldn’t get our preferred breakfast time the next morning, which affected our plans. We were also told we couldn’t get our preferred time on the second day either, but then a staff member said they could accommodate our preferred time if we were in a hurry. That made me wonder what happened on the first day. The inconsistency in staff responses was concerning. Dissatisfaction level: 100 The slippers were reused, which felt unhygienic. Dissatisfaction level: 90 I used the outdoor bath without knowing it would be brown, but it was cloudy and had an odor that smelled like decay, along with other issues. I felt sick and got out immediately. My wife said it was a clear brown on day one but cloudy on day two. It would be helpful to have a notice board explaining possible odor, cloudiness, or floating matter so guests are not surprised. Dissatisfaction level: 90 There were too few shuttle buses and limited operating hours, so we couldn’t use it. Dissatisfaction level: 90 The shop didn’t sell anything we wanted or could use. Also, there weren’t many snack options in the lounge; if snacks that pair well with alcohol were sold at the shop, guests could enjoy them with drinks in the lounge. Since there is no convenience store nearby, I would like to see better selection overall. Dissatisfaction level: 80 The Room had been renovated, but many older parts remained. The only amenity provided was a toothbrush. Dissatisfaction level: 80 The Room window opens slightly, but even that opening seems wide enough for a small child to fall through; it should be narrower for safety. Dissatisfaction level: 80 The TV was small. Dissatisfaction level: 80 There was only one tissue box. Dissatisfaction level: 80 Given this Hotel’s quality level, dinner is far too expensive.

All-inclusive stay with a large public bath! Table tennis, too!

This time, four of us stayed with an elderly family member in a Junior Suite Lake View on the 12th floor. The view was wonderful, and the Room was spacious—there were a few steps near the toilet, but overall it was excellent. Because of the rain we couldn’t stroll around Kurokabe Square, so we checked in early at 13:30. The woman at the front desk was very beautiful and her service was pleasant—truly impressive. There were Facilities to enjoy, such as table tennis, so we had fun until we could enter our Room at 15:00. Dinner was great—the sukiyaki beef was tender and very delicious. Breakfast was also good: the croissants were crispy, and the pineapple was sweet and juicy. However, it was inconvenient because our seats were far from where we picked up the food. The large public bath had a hot outdoor bath with a great Onsen. We also relaxed at the bar until 23:00. Our family members staying in the same Room were also happy and said it was a wonderful Hotel. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Good value for money.

The free shuttle bus from the nearest station was convenient. The complimentary lounge after arrival was very crowded, perhaps because alcohol was unlimited, but I enjoyed the draft beer and sparkling wine. Although the lobby has been renovated, the building is very old and the Room felt unchanged; even the in-room amenities had a strong retro vibe. The unusually small unit bathroom had a big step up from the Room, but there was a small step stool under the clothes rack, which helped avoid inconvenience. Since there is a large public bath, I used that instead of the unit bath and didn’t mind how small it was. As is common with older Hotels, there were few power outlets and they were far from the bed, so you’ll need to bring an extension cord or similar items in advance. My biggest issue was that the bed springs were too soft and the bed was low, making it uncomfortable both to sit on and to sleep in.

    Comfortable all-inclusive stay

The Onsen and the post-bath relaxation area are excellent, with a well-designed layout that makes it easy to unwind after bathing. The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of options, making for a highly satisfying experience overall. Above all, the view overlooking Lake Biwa is stunning, and it made the entire stay feel truly refreshing.

    We had a great time!

Overall, I was very satisfied. The building is old, which can’t be helped, but it was inconvenient that YouTube couldn’t be watched in the Room, and even though meal times are fixed, there were times when no seats were available. I wish the shop had been open in the morning as well. The food was tasty and good, but it felt like there weren’t many options—especially at breakfast… However, the front desk staff at check-in provided excellent service and really lifted my mood. I also enjoyed the lounge snacks.
