It was our first tim...
It was our first time in Narai-juku, traveling as a group of four: two university students and a married couple. After the rain stopped, the townscape felt calm and atmospheric, and when we opened the door, the Room had been stylishly renovated and was very comfortable. The bath was not an Onsen, but it felt gentle and soothing on the skin. We enjoyed the meal with paired drinks, and for dessert all the staff celebrated a birthday with us. It became an unforgettable birthday.

Off-Peak Obon Holiday
I visited on the 17th and 18th of last week for a refresh vacation. When I arrived, there were so many people along the Narai-juku street that it was difficult to make my way in. The garden outside my Room was spacious and could be enjoyed from the floor-to-ceiling window, creating a calm atmosphere where time seemed to slow down. I was able to spend some quiet, relaxing moments. Both the food and drinks were absolutely delicious! I was also very satisfied with the dinner pairing—the selections matched perfectly. Personally, one dish featuring locally grown vegetables and the gin and tonic served as part of the pairing were especially memorable! The staff at BYAKU Narai were easy to talk to, and I really enjoyed our conversations—it became a wonderful memory. This time I missed out on trying the whisky, so next time I’d like to make sure I don’t forget. I also forgot to buy a bottle for home (haha).

It was the grand annual festival at Chin Shrine.
This was a place and an Accommodation I’d wanted to visit for a long time, but since it doesn’t have an Onsen, it ultimately dropped off my shortlist. For some reason, this time I just really wanted to go, so we decided to stay. When choosing our Room, since we don’t like moving around too much, we looked at Rooms in the main building (Toshiyoshiya), where the front desk, restaurant, large public bath, and bar are all on the same premises. Since it was a special occasion, we chose Room 102 facing the Narai-juku street. The Room is on the second floor, so you don’t end up making eye contact with tourists walking by—and you can enjoy people-watching instead. We were also surprised at how close you can see the sugidama hanging under the eaves and how large it is. Because it’s an old wooden building, during the day you can hear passersby and check-in conversations, but at night it becomes quiet. It didn’t bother me. Also, since the stairs are steep in an old-fashioned way, elderly guests or those with mobility issues may find them a bit concerning. There were only four bottles of water in the Room, but there’s tea and juice in a freezer next to the front desk that you’re free to take back to your Room. I love Onsen baths, but since there isn’t one here this time I soaked in the large public bath filled with spring water. It was about 30 minutes after check-in and no one else was there—so it felt like having it all to ourselves. It was wonderful! The in-room bath also had bath additives such as sake lees that made it enjoyable. Dinner featured locally sourced ingredients; everything was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. We’re a couple around retirement age (late 50s/early 60s), and the portion size felt just right. By chance our stay overlapped with Chin Shrine’s annual grand festival as well, so we were able to watch part of it and really enjoyed ourselves. We’d also like to visit Narai-juku during its usual days too—so when we return again someday, we look forward to staying with you again.

More like staying in Narai-juku itself than in a hotel.
We stayed as a family of three (two adults and one elementary-school child). During our 12-night trip around Kyushu, we returned to Osaka by ferry and stayed here for one night on our way to Tokyo. ●Location A Hotel located right in the heart of Narai-juku on the Nakasendo, now well known among inbound travelers. The street in front is Narai-juku’s main street. Vehicle access is usually restricted for tourists, but guests can drive up to the Accommodation to drop off luggage, so it wasn’t inconvenient. The parking area is just behind the property, and access was smooth. ●Guest room A detached-style Hotel created by renovating buildings that were originally a sake brewery and an old Ryokan. Our room was in a building a few minutes’ walk from the check-in building. Within a Japanese-style space, there was a bedroom, a floor-seating living area, a large entryway space, and a bath—very spacious overall. There was also an upstairs bedroom, but we didn’t use it since there were only three of us. The Facility itself feels new, but many original elements—such as fittings and beams—have been preserved; in some places doors don’t close perfectly or beams are low. In other words, this Accommodation is best suited to those who can appreciate age as part of its character. ●Common areas There is a restaurant, bar, and large public bath. All are renovated from former brewery spaces and have a very distinctive atmosphere. The bar still retains the unique scent from its brewery days, so it’s better suited to guests who can embrace that old-world feel. ●Dinner A highly conceptual creative Japanese course meal—more like enjoying a Michelin-style restaurant where you imagine the story and intent behind each dish. The quality of the food is high, but it may be challenging for children. With its dimly lit and calm setting overall, this feels more like an Accommodation for experienced adult travelers. ●Breakfast A Japanese set meal centered on local ingredients. Portions are slightly modest, but we could really sense the quality of the ingredients. ●Overall satisfaction Personally I was very satisfied. However, my wife said she found some aspects of how the age was preserved slightly concerning, and our daughter didn’t seem to enjoy the meals much either—so it may not be an Accommodation that appeals equally to every family member. On the other hand, for those interested in Japanese culture, historic architecture, and the atmosphere of an old post town villagescape، I think this is an extremely appealing Hotel. There were many international guests as well; it left us with a strong impression as an Accommodation where you can experience an extraordinary side of Japan.

I’m glad I chose BYAKU in Narai-juku.
I stayed in a Room in the annex, facing the main street of Ueharaya. The Room, renovated with exposed beams and a black-based design, was chic and modern. It even had a wooden dripper and a Timemore grinder, so I could relax with coffee in a rare lacquer cup while watching videos on my mobile projector (there is no TV). At the main building restaurant—renovated from a former sake brewery and miso storehouse—the dinner was outstanding: rare venison oyaki, carp shinjo, premium beef cooked to perfection, and local vegetables that were richly flavored and very sweet. The strawberry dessert topped with mint jelly was served on a beautiful plate decorated with lacquer on glass—truly an exceptional dinner to enjoy not only by taste but also by sight. The dining staff were young, but an English-fluent male staff member assisted international guests, and the other female staff kindly said they were “still learning,” which made everyone feel attentive and welcoming—I found myself wanting to cheer them on. Choosing this Accommodation for my trip to Narai-juku was absolutely the right decision. Thank you very much.

Comfort and understated elegance in an extraordinary setting
I first learned about this Accommodation a few years ago, and finally had the chance to stay this time. It blends seamlessly into the Narai streetscape, with a presence that lets you feel its history. When you step inside, the garden’s plants welcome you, allowing you to fully sense the season. The Room offers modern comfort while preserving traces of the past, making it an easy and relaxing space to spend time in. My father, an architect, also praised it highly—saying that renovating a building of this caliber while intentionally leaving parts as they were is an incredible concept. Perhaps thanks to the spring water used for the bath, my skin felt smoother and seemed to pair perfectly with skincare; my skin looked great the next morning. The meals were also outstanding for their generous use of ingredients from Shinshu. The menu was abstract in a way that sparked imagination, and even wondering what would come next was part of the fun. I ordered the non-alcohol pairing, and the creator’s skill was remarkable—I would recommend it even to those who mainly drink alcohol. There was plenty of food, but because everything was fresh and high quality, it didn’t feel heavy at all. Breakfast too was seasoned so that the umami of dashi and ingredients soaked right in—I ended up eating a lot. Every dish was deeply nourishing and brought out each ingredient’s appeal to its fullest. Also, all staff members were wonderful—always smiling and fluent in English. Even understatedly put: 100 out of 100. It became a wonderful trip where I could fully feel history, value, and human warmth. Thank you very much.

It was a wonderful accommodation!!
It was a wonderful Accommodation, and I was very satisfied. I would like to stay again in a different Room. However, I think I would have been even more satisfied if the room service included in the all-inclusive Plan had been available from 7:00 a.m. the next day until about 30 minutes before check-out. Sorry for my selfish comment.

The best Accommodation I’ve ever stayed at.
We stayed here two years ago. Ever since then, we’ve kept saying, “It was really wonderful,” and this time we returned for our second stay. We’ve stayed at many Accommodations in a similar price range, but this one is the best. The meals, drinks, Room, baths, and the staff’s hospitality—everything was outstanding. We were completely satisfied and couldn’t find a single fault. We’ll be back again in a different season. We look forward to staying with you again.

A place you’ll want to visit in every season.
I visited during this season hoping to see a snowy landscape, but it was pleasantly warm at first, which was a bit disappointing. The next day, though, my wish came true (maybe?)—powdery snow began to fall, creating exactly the atmosphere I had hoped for, and I was completely satisfied. As expected, both the Room and the meals were excellent again. The drink pairing was also a wonderful match that complemented the ingredients perfectly, and it made me strongly want to choose the pairing course again next time. As always, there were many international guests (with far fewer Japanese guests). As I wrote last time as well, I feel proud as a Japanese guest if they chose this Accommodation and are enjoying it as much as we are—it's truly a wonderful place. I look forward to visiting again next time.

Everything was truly...
Everything was truly wonderful, and it was a very satisfying stay. The Room was clean and comfortable, the staff were kind and attentive, and the location was convenient—there was nothing to fault. Overall, the quality was excellent, and it is a Hotel I would definitely like to stay at again. The only disappointment was breakfast. The selection felt somewhat limited overall, and the offerings were a bit underwhelming.

Historic Accommodation Town
Narai-juku is a charming old post town. The accommodation retains the atmosphere of a traditional sake brewery, providing a serene and comfortable space for a relaxing stay. What impressed me the most was the underfloor heating installed not only in the room but also in the hallways and bathroom, which was especially appreciated during this chilly winter season. The dinner was exquisite, featuring carefully prepared dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, all of which were incredibly delicious. I would love to visit again!

Byaku Narai was wonderful in autumn as well.
I visited for the first time in summer and was so impressed that I made a reservation to visit again in autumn. Byaku Narai offers dishes made exclusively with local ingredients from Nagano Prefecture, making everything perfect and providing a truly sublime experience. The food is absolutely delicious. The staff's warm hospitality also left me completely satisfied. Next time, I would love to visit in spring!

Relaxing Accommodation
This accommodation offers a relaxing atmosphere with its ambiance, design, and hospitality. It would be unbeatable if it had an onsen. Both the indoor bath and the large public bath were clean with soft water. The meals seem to have become more "polished" compared to before. While a more bold menu could be interesting, this style might appeal better given the current influx of international guests. It's an accommodation you'd want to visit either on your way to or from Nagano during your travels. It was a pleasant stay!

The staff provides excellent customer service.
I arrived late due to work and mistakenly got off the taxi 50 meters before the correct location, but they promptly came to pick me up. During the meal, the staff answered all my detailed questions politely and responded to every small request with care, speed, and a friendly attitude, making it a very pleasant experience. The amenities were excellent, and I would love to stay here again if I have the chance.

Stayed at the Kura Maisonette.
The meals and the historic building were excellent, but unfortunately, the reception staff was unkind and often argumentative, which was unpleasant. The usability of the Kura maisonette was poor, so a detailed explanation of the Facility would have been appreciated. The white wine provided as a Diamond benefit was very unpleasant and ended up being discarded entirely. Was it cheap or old?

Experience a relaxing Edo-period-style retreat.
The streets of Narai-juku, reminiscent of a time leap to the Edo period. The accommodation, a former sake brewery blending seamlessly into this setting, offers a more relaxing and extraordinary experience than any luxury hotel. The friendliness of the staff feels genuine and not scripted, creating an atmosphere where you can truly unwind. The cuisine is exceptional; if this restaurant were in Tokyo, it would undoubtedly be a reservation-challenged spot. Looking forward to enjoying seasonal dishes again, I plan to visit next in autumn.

The Facility and meals were excellent.
We stayed at the accommodation for a two-person trip with a friend. We were very much looking forward to the room with an open-air bath from the time of reservation, and as shown in the photos, it was a bright and lovely room that exceeded our expectations. We tried using the large public bath once, but it left an average impression. The open-air bath in our room was more than enough to enjoy thoroughly. Both breakfast and dinner featured menus utilizing local ingredients, and both taste and content were excellent. The staff's attentiveness and service were very polite. Service at the restaurant deserves five stars. Although the air conditioning made it quite cold inside, we appreciated being provided with lap blankets for comfort. On the other hand, we found the front desk staff's attitude extremely disappointing. We had high expectations for this luxury accommodation but felt their cold demeanor did not match those standards. There was a noticeable difference in how they treated guests versus non-guests, as well as changes in their attitude before and after check-out, which left us feeling uncomfortable on multiple occasions. In particular, interactions with older staff members felt off-putting; this seemed to influence younger staff members similarly. While there is no fault in terms of facilities or meals' quality, we do not plan to revisit this accommodation nor recommend it to friends seeking a place to stay.

Nagano's Local Sake and Kiso Lacquerware
We stayed for one night to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday and our daughters' birthdays. The traditional house blended beautifully with the townscape, allowing us to take relaxing strolls whenever we felt like it. The interior was clean, especially the water facilities, and the amenities and furnishings were thoughtfully selected, making our stay very comfortable. The Anniversary Plan and various surprises delighted everyone in the family. The meals were delicious, and we discovered local sake through pairings for the first time. The craft gin was also excellent, and we particularly enjoyed "Sansuiki," which we ended up purchasing the next day—only to find out it’s exclusively sold at its brewery or in Narai! We truly savored unique local specialties that can only be experienced here. Additionally, I admired the Kiso lacquerware used at the restaurant. Although I had never considered using lacquerware at home due to its high cost and delicate care requirements, I became inspired by how beautifully it complemented table settings during our stay. When I asked hotel staff where I could purchase similar items, they kindly provided detailed information for which I'm very grateful. I ended up buying glassware paired with lacquerware that had been used for desserts or chilled tofu dishes during our meals here. While searching for these items was enjoyable on its own, having an option to purchase coffee cups from our room or dinner tableware directly through an online shop by the Hotel would be wonderful!

Completely satisfied!
This was my first visit to Narai-juku, and I was deeply impressed by the charm of the town. BYAKU Narai blended seamlessly into its surroundings, enhancing the overall experience. The room was located slightly away from the main building, but it was a negligible distance. The renovated room was very clean and well-maintained. Opening the shoji screens revealed a view of the townscape outside, which was truly picturesque (though care is needed as it can also be seen from outside). At the front desk on the first floor, guests could freely take water, tea, grape juice, and more to their rooms—a very appreciated service. The open-air bath was spacious enough and felt wonderful to use under clear skies. Even small items in the room like coffee mills were thoughtfully selected. Both dinner and breakfast featured carefully chosen ingredients and were absolutely delicious! For dinner, we opted for wine pairing which perfectly complemented our meal. From check-in to check-out, all staff provided warm and attentive service that made our stay truly satisfying at this accommodation. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your hospitality on June 13th.
This trip was to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The nostalgic streets of Nakasendo were so enchanting that just being there was moving, making us feel as if people from the past were still present. The Ryokan felt a bit dimly lit, but the spacious maisonette-style room and the bath using spring water—though not an Onsen—left our skin feeling smooth after bathing. For meals, my wife chose a six-pairing option, while I opted for soft drink pairings centered around tea. Every combination perfectly complemented the dishes, leaving us thoroughly satisfied. The Shinshu Premium Beef served at dinner was incredibly delicious and expertly prepared. Although we only stayed one night, it felt like everything was done with genuine care to ensure guests' happiness. Breakfast wasn’t extravagant but warm and fulfilling—not just for the stomach but also for the heart. We had a wonderful time without any unpleasant moments and are truly grateful for such a pleasant experience. We’ve found an accommodation we’d love to visit again in the future! Thank you very much!

It was a highly satisfying stay.
The building renovation preserves the charm of the traditional structure while updating its functionality to modern standards, allowing guests to enjoy both comfort and the nostalgic atmosphere of historic Narai Accommodation. The items in the room are unified with origins from Narai Accommodation, Kiso, and Shiojiri. Not only is the meal content exceptional, but there is also great attention to detail in using remade tableware that was originally stored in traditional houses, which adds a fascinating touch. I would love to stay again as I am curious to see other rooms as well. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Blending seamlessly with the historic townscape, the exterior maintains its charm while the interior is modern and comfortable. The room offers complete relaxation without any inconvenience. Meals, including local cuisine, are thoughtfully prepared and delightful. It was a flawless accommodation experience. There were many international guests (noticed at the dining area), and seeing them enjoy such an atmosphere and cuisine made me feel a sense of pride as a Japanese person. I was deeply moved and strongly wish to visit again in a different season.

The greatest value is the comfortable stay at Narai Accommodation.
The room has been beautifully renovated and is comfortable. The meals are carefully prepared, but the taste is average. Excessive explanations about where ingredients are sourced may not appeal to Japanese guests, and overly elaborate menu descriptions can be a drawback. It might be more appealing to foreign visitors, though! A simpler approach would be appreciated.

The best accommodation I've ever stayed at!
It was a wonderful accommodation with excellent service. Although there were many young staff members, everyone was warm and provided exceptional hospitality. The room, designed with a wood theme, featured a semi-open-air bath offering views of lush green mountains, which was truly relaxing. Regarding the meals, the portion of the omelet at breakfast was too large and I couldn't finish it. A half portion might be sufficient. The furniture and facilities were sophisticated and well-selected, which left me impressed.

60th Birthday Celebration
Stayed here to celebrate a 60th birthday. The beautiful room and cuisine, which you wouldn't guess just from the exterior, made it clear why it's popular among international guests. It was an anniversary plan, and we were thoroughly satisfied with the hospitality as well.
