Stay in a building that reflects the timeless history of Nara, and be captivated by the heartfelt explanations of the brewer about soy sauce and their passion for the local culture. The meals were elaborate and truly delicious. It’s an accommodation I’d love to visit again and recommend to others.

Finally stayed at the accommodation I had been curious about for a long time.
The accommodation was incredibly comfortable, with exceptional hospitality that went beyond standard procedures, making me want to visit again! The soy sauce pressing experience included a passionate and detailed explanation from the host. While some younger guests seemed less engaged, I found the stories fascinating and gained valuable knowledge. Hearing about the grandfather's difficult decision to cease soy sauce production and how his grandson overcame a 70-year gap to restart brewing from scratch was deeply moving. It felt like a story worthy of an autobiography or picture book. Honestly, I initially thought, "With a 70-year gap, the soy sauce must be average," but I was proven wrong. Having visited other soy sauce breweries in Yuasa and Shodoshima before, I found this one’s aroma and mild flavor truly outstanding—perhaps best described as "drinkable soy sauce." The use of handmade pure domestic ingredients (locally sourced) really makes a difference. Naturally, I purchased raw unpasteurized soy sauce, pasteurized soy sauce, moromi salt—and more! Another surprise came during dinner: every dish on the menu featured "soy sauce." Menu: - Beans × Soy Sauce - Raw Unpasteurized Soy Sauce - Onion × Soy Sauce - Egg × Soy Sauce - Vinegar & Soy Sauce - Red Wine × Moromi - Moromi Lees - Lemon × Soy Sauce While most accommodations highlight fresh seafood or branded beef as their main attractions, here these elements were treated as accompaniments designed not to overshadow their star ingredient—soy sauce. Their dedication and passion for soy sauce are unparalleled. That said, they also served organic vegetables from their own garden alongside Yamato beef and pork. Despite being in an inland prefecture without direct access to seafood sources—the fish served was remarkably fresh and delicious. All these carefully selected ingredients perfectly complemented their signature soy sauces. Thanks to this thoughtful pairing approach—I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of your exquisite sauces! I rarely write reviews but felt compelled due to how much this exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to visiting again soon! P.S.: Thank you for promptly shipping my umbrella!

It was a one-of-a-kind accommodation.
We stayed for one night in the "Koji" room. Sightseeing: We arrived at the accommodation before noon, left our luggage, and explored shrines and ancient tombs using electric bicycles. Unlike cars, electric bicycles are more maneuverable and quite comfortable. However, please note that for many people, June might be the limit due to the heat. Facilities: While the accommodation looks old from the outside, it has been carefully renovated inside. The cleanliness of the water facilities was particularly impressive. Since the bath is not an onsen and there is no large communal bath like other accommodations, I rated it 4 stars. Experience: The unique aspect here is listening to stories during their activities. I won’t go into details but it went beyond just being moving—it was profound. Even after returning home, I find myself reflecting on those stories and thinking about what I can do—about culture or how to carry on work traditions. Dining: Coincidentally, a week before our visit we had enjoyed delicious rice, water, and mountain vegetables in Minamiuonuma. This led us to make comparisons; hence my 4-star rating for dining here. However, I believe this accommodation has great potential to improve even further—I’m looking forward to seeing that! Service: Flawless! Their operations must be thoroughly thought out with guests in mind! When we checked in after getting tired from cycling around town earlier than expected—they kindly let us rest in a cool room before completing check-in procedures—a truly thoughtful gesture that we deeply appreciated!

Adult School Trip!!
This time, we visited with a couple of high school friends from Kobe, making it a group of four. We have traveled to various places before and enjoyed staying at wonderful Hotels and Ryokans while savoring delicious meals, but we often felt something was missing. When we came across this Monitor Plan, it immediately caught our attention as "interesting!" It included experiences like soy sauce pressing and morning shrine visits. When I shared this with my friends, they were instantly excited, and we decided to book it. The host kindly explained the history and production process of Maruto Soy Sauce in detail. The soy sauce that the four of us pressed together was incredibly delicious! The meals also made great use of that soy sauce, leaving us deeply impressed. In the morning, we took a walk to the nearby Muraya Shrine while listening to many fascinating stories along the way. Although I hadn't been particularly interested in Nara before this trip, I became an instant fan after this experience. This trip felt like an adult version of a school excursion since I got to travel with close friends—enjoying beautiful scenery, learning about history, interacting with locals living there, and tasting local specialties—all creating unforgettable memories. Lastly, the host's passion for their hometown and dedication to soy sauce truly resonated with us. It turned into such a heartwarming journey for all of us—thank you so much!

The renovated guest ...
The renovated guest rooms, originally an old soy sauce brewery, offer a serene atmosphere with high privacy, ensuring a pleasant stay. By chance, upon arrival, we were greeted at the parking lot by Mr. Kimura, the 18th-generation owner. He personally guided us from check-in to our room with great care. While many accommodations of this kind often have representatives provide brief greetings and explanations before leaving the rest to staff members, Mr. Kimura was actively involved throughout our stay—during meals and even at check-out—working alongside his team to address every detail attentively, which left a positive impression on us. It was also wonderful to hear about the facility's history as a soy sauce brewery and learn about the local history and culture during our visit.

Second stay at the accommodation following last year.
I stayed here this March, marking my second visit since my first stay in June last year. During my first visit, I was searching for my next travel destination and came across this accommodation online by chance. It turned out to be an extraordinary accommodation that far exceeded my expectations. The meals, the room, the personality of the owner and staff—all were exceptional. Especially memorable was the soy sauce pressing experience where I learned about the history of the brewery and land from the owner, as well as joining him for a morning prayer session the next day—experiences unique to this place. The meals enjoyed after hearing such stories were truly delicious beyond words. I created so many wonderful memories that cannot all be written here, which made me want to return without waiting even a year. As someone who loves accommodations more than sightseeing during trips, I usually prefer trying different accommodations even if one is excellent. However, this is one place where I feel like staying again—or rather—a place worth traveling to Nara just to stay at this accommodation. For me, it’s truly one-of-a-kind. I will definitely return again!

Luxurious Time
I discovered this accommodation, introduced in a magazine I happened to see at a hair salon, as a soy sauce brewery offering breakfast with tamago kake gohan (rice with raw egg). Remembering the name "Maruto Soy Sauce," I searched online and showed it to my husband, who immediately said, "I want to go!" After quickly making the reservation and waiting for just over a month, we were eagerly looking forward to our visit. Upon arrival at the accommodation, we were first impressed by its historical exterior. The premises of this estate allowed us to feel the history of soy sauce brewing everywhere. The guest rooms were stylishly renovated while preserving elements like beams where possible. From the soy sauce-themed dinner course to breakfast—everything exceeded our expectations. Regarding meals, they kindly asked about any dislikes upon arrival and accommodated my preferences even on such short notice by cooking raw fish for me. Thanks to their thoughtful service, even someone like me with many food preferences could enjoy every dish without leaving anything behind. Thank you very much. It was also my first time learning that freshly pressed soy sauce has a sweet taste. During the soy sauce pressing experience, we poured freshly pressed soy sauce over grilled kuzumochi (arrowroot cake) and tasted it. Secretly dipping my finger into the leftover soy sauce and tasting it revealed its sweetness—a delightful surprise! The dinner course featured local ingredients paired with items like soy sauces or moromi salt; everything from presentation to flavor and portion size was outstanding. For breakfast—the much-anticipated tamago kake gohan—we savored it with nama-age shoyu (freshly brewed unpasteurized soy sauce). It felt incredibly luxurious enjoying this meal while appreciating differences between nama-age shoyu and fire-heated shoyu. We participated in both activities: the morning prayer session and the hands-on experience of pressing fresh soy sauce. Listening to stories filled with passion for brewing from your host was truly moving; during morning prayers especially—the tales shared evoked timeless history more fascinating than any school lesson ever could be! To future guests staying here: I highly recommend experiencing both activities if possible! There are no TVs or clocks inside guest rooms—but none are needed because this is an accommodation where one can fully relax amidst luxury moments away from distractions. Since our trip focused solely on spending time at Maruto Soy Sauce's accommodation itself rather than sightseeing extensively around Nara—we only managed limited exploration nearby but gained newfound appreciation toward Nara’s charm overall! Next time though—we plan returning using Maruto Soy Sauce as base again exploring places missed previously together discussing fond memories heading home afterward already looking forward seeing everyone again soon!

The meals, both dinn...
The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were absolutely delicious. The freshly pressed soy sauce had a unique aroma and flavor, completely different from the usual, and the dishes made with moromi were surprisingly tasty. We participated in the soy sauce pressing experience and the morning walk, where we enjoyed meaningful time with explanations that included historical insights. The only downside was that the sound of conversations from neighboring rooms and door opening/closing was louder than expected.

Maruto Soy Sauce Accommodation
We stayed as a group of three, including my elderly mother and wife. This accommodation is a converted old soy sauce brewery located in the rural village of Tawaramoto. The narrow roads made it somewhat difficult to find the location, possibly due to the preservation of the original village layout. The historic building features roof tiles adorned with symbols of the Seven Lucky Gods, and its courtyard was beautifully maintained. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to participate in the soy sauce-making experience, but later received a guided explanation from the manager. Our room was on the second floor, which was challenging for my mother; however, it was originally used as the master’s room and had a spacious and traditional atmosphere with two alcoves—a rare feature. Dinner time was adjusted by 30 minutes for us, allowing us to enjoy plenty of welcome wine beforehand. Dinner itself featured a Michelin-recognized course menu that paired seasonal ingredients with soy sauce—truly exceptional! The bath was an indoor cypress wood bath where each person could relax comfortably one at a time. In the morning at 7:00 AM, we participated in a shrine visit led by the 18th-generation head of this establishment. We learned about ancient history from this region and visited Muraya Shrine—a counterpart to Miwa Daijin Shrine—offering us an incredible opportunity to connect with pre-Asuka period history. Breakfast included dishes made from local seasonal ingredients along with rice topped with fresh white-yolk eggs—we couldn’t resist having seconds! Located in Nara's historically rich area—the birthplace of Japan’s first nation—this accommodation provided an invaluable experience well worth its price.

What is Passed Down
The charm of being a long-established accommodation, the spirit of inheriting intangible traditions, and the heartfelt strength of wonderful people made me feel that this accommodation is truly a miracle. Every aspect of hospitality was handled with utmost care, and I felt warmth in every dish served, filled with heart. It was a journey that made me grateful to be Japanese once again. Without television or electromagnetic disturbances, I forgot about time and experienced an extraordinary yet nostalgic Japan. I will definitely visit again. I feel completely refreshed. Thank you very much. This was an accommodation where even soy sauce felt deeply appreciated.

The Timeless Charm of Traditional Japan
It was a long time since I felt such refined Japanese hospitality. The courteous gestures unique to a long-established accommodation that values people. I was deeply moved by the heartfelt attention to every detail, and it made me reflect on myself as a Japanese person once again. With this feeling growing stronger, I left the accommodation. We talked about how Nara is still much deeper than Kyoto, and vowed to thoroughly learn about Nara upon returning home. This was an accommodation I wanted to keep as my personal retreat. The wonderful hospitality, the heart of the Japanese spirit, and the importance of human connection— there were even moments so touching that tears welled up after a long time. Thank you very much. I received such wonderful energy from this experience.

The Hotel That Showed Us the Wonders of Nara
First of all, there are no points to deduct. Before our stay, we called about the room amenities and were met with a warm and heartfelt response from a female staff member, which heightened our expectations. Of course, the soy sauce pressing experience was amazing, but we were deeply moved by the decisions, courage, and efforts of the 18th-generation head of the family. This made even the beams in the room feel endearing—it's truly fascinating. The morning visit to Muraya Shrine was also guided by the head of the family. Watching him greet locals warmly conveyed his love for this region and his desire to share its beauty with others. The sunrise over Mount Miwa reflecting on Yamato River was like a painting. The room amenities were perfect, including a cypress bath (the scent is irresistible!). We also appreciated being able to borrow a humidifier for my daughter who has a sensitive throat. At checkout, I was surprised when my shy daughter asked if she could take a photo with the head of the family herself—it must have been his personality that touched her heart. I also loved how discreetly yet passionately he explained about tea house tiles during our stay; it left an impression on me as well as other staff members' exceptional hospitality. During breakfast when discussing plans after checkout, he suggested visiting Omiwa Shrine → Sai Shrine → Hibara Shrine → an observatory overlooking Nara → followed by lunch featuring Miwa somen noodles—a day my daughter and I will never forget! Honestly speaking though there aren't any convenience stores nearby; still highly recommend this hotel without hesitation! If anything minor: dinner focused heavily around soy sauce flavors leading us feeling thirsty before bed due salty taste—but within acceptable limits given unforgettable vegetable quality paired beautifully alongside soy sauces creating unique culinary experiences worth remembering forever. We’ll definitely return again soon! Please take care everyone & keep up great work!

It was amazing! Truly moving!
This was a mother-daughter trip focused on enjoying Miwa Shrine and the accommodation. The soy sauce pressing activity at the accommodation was not just an experience; the host's story was grand and deeply moving. We were even allowed to taste an incredibly special soy sauce we pressed ourselves, poured over grilled kudzu mochi. It was absolutely delicious and unforgettable. The room had a stylish yet functional design that reflected its historical charm. From the entrance, it felt extraordinary, and the cypress bath was fantastic as well. We enjoyed wine and coffee in a beautiful tea room overlooking a stunning garden, which also came with fascinating stories! The sunset view nearby is breathtaking—be sure to ask for recommendations on where to see it. The meals were exceptional too. Every dish featured local ingredients from Nara paired with soy sauce, making it both delicious and fun to enjoy. The sake selection consisted entirely of Nara brews, all of which were excellent—I ended up drinking more than usual but felt perfectly fine the next day. We joined an early morning shrine visit activity as well, which left us in awe of its history, nature, and incredible scenery. The host’s storytelling in the morning was sharp and captivating—this activity is a must-join! Breakfast was amazing! The surprising TKG (tamago kake gohan) with delicious soy sauce allowed us to savor Nara's ingredients from early morning along with delightful desserts. This accommodation offered comfort alongside joy and inspiration—it truly is outstanding! I brought home plenty of soy sauce as souvenirs; I’ll cherish them dearly. I would love to return here again with someone special someday. Thank you for such an incredible experience!

Accommodation for a Unique Experience
Staying at a soy sauce brewery was a first for me, so I was very excited even before my stay. After hearing the owner's passion for soy sauce making, I had the chance to experience pressing soy sauce myself, which was deeply moving. The soy sauce-themed dishes were all delicious, and since sake could be ordered in small portions, I got to try several types of local Nara sake. The highlight was the "moromi" served at breakfast—it was exceptional! I would love to stay here again if given the opportunity.

I stayed here during a trip with friends. The shuttle service to the station, the soy sauce brewery tour, and the morning visit to Muraya Shrine were delightful and memorable experiences. The accommodation offers delicious cuisine and has been properly renovated.
We focus greatly on hospitality. While the explanation might feel a bit lengthy, the stay was comfortable. However, it seems that small children may not fully appreciate it, as it was noisy at night. If accommodations are not restricted to guests above junior high school age, I might reconsider staying next time.

The young host's sincere and earnest demeanor left a deep impression on us. A heartwarming stay woven with tradition and dedication, featuring a special experience at the soy sauce brewery.
This stay offered a space with meticulous attention to detail, heartfelt cuisine, and an opportunity to experience the profound story of the soy sauce brewery. The moromi kasu cake received at check-in had a subtle sweetness at first bite, followed by a refined flavor that gently spread in the mouth. In the lounge, which utilized a former tea room, there was complimentary drink service featuring carefully selected options such as white and red wine, coffee, and Japanese black tea. It was a serene space where we could leisurely enjoy the beginning of our journey. During the soy sauce pressing experience, we were given an explanation of the brewery's history. Learning not only about its tradition but also about its "revival" story left us deeply moved. Both dinner and breakfast consisted of meticulously prepared dishes that highlighted the deliciousness of vegetables in particular. The meals made full use of soy sauce to bring out the flavors of fresh ingredients delicately yet profoundly. We stayed in a renovated room within an old warehouse that beautifully combined traditional elements with modern comforts like air conditioning and floor heating. The amenities were well thought out for a comfortable stay—a perfect blend of historical charm and contemporary convenience. It was truly heartwarming to feel how much care went into every corner created by those who brought this accommodation to life. We would love to visit again during another season. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience. The soy sauce and moromi salt purchased on our way home have been indispensable additions in our kitchen!

Commitment to Quality Soy Sauce
I stayed overnight to attend a concert in Yamato-Takada. Although I initially planned to drive a rental car to the accommodation, due to snow in the forecast, I requested shuttle service from the accommodation at the last minute, and they kindly accommodated my request. During my stay, it was very cold outside, but the room was warm and comfortable with underfloor heating. After returning home, I used the fresh soy sauce I purchased as a souvenir for cooking, which resulted in an incredibly mellow flavor. It made me appreciate once again the owner's dedication to soy sauce making. I look forward to visiting again during warmer seasons and using this accommodation as a base for exploring Asuka region.

Accommodation in Nara's Oldest Historical Soy Sauce Brewery
Drawn by the charm of experiencing soy sauce pressing, I chose this place as someone who loves fermented foods and traditional Japanese houses. The welcome drink of moromi financier paired with roasted green tea was exceptional. The Room I was guided to was on the second floor of the main house where successive heads of the family lived, offering a spacious and calming space with a view of Yamato's landscape. It had underfloor heating, air conditioning, and an air purifier which was helpful for my sensitive lungs prone to dryness. However, while the hinoki bath was spacious and pleasant, it felt inconvenient as reheating wasn't possible. The soy sauce pressing experience after hearing passionate explanations about its history and culture from staff members was exciting. Tasting freshly pressed soy sauce on grilled mochi revealed a thick texture with a sweet flavor. Before dinner, I enjoyed coffee in the lounge that used to be a tea room during some free time. Dinner featured a soy sauce course utilizing naturally brewed soy sauce, moromi paste & salt along with local ingredients—delicious without overpowering flavors! My husband who enjoys local sake found it hard to resist drinking more; though Japan’s white wine tasted great too albeit slightly pricey. Breakfast also highlighted naturally brewed soy sauces paired beautifully alongside locally sourced vegetables in traditional Japanese dishes—the rice (Hinohikari) combined perfectly w/ Asuka Village’s organic eggs for tamago kake gohan (egg over rice). Despite rarely using condiments myself usually—I could tell how special these were! During breakfast18th-generation head shared heartfelt stories regarding reviving once-lost traditions surrounding brewing processes while emphasizing regional connections leaving me inspired hoping future generations continue preserving such legacies even if dessert-coffee cooled down amidst listening attentively. Unfortunately couldn’t join morning shrine visit due scheduling conflicts but deeply appreciated thoughtful hospitality throughout stay including small gestures like Moromi Financier initially served though unavailable later when considering souvenirs sadly missed opportunity there! On way back home purchased local sake alongside Kaki-no-ha sushi plus Maruto Soy Sauce products especially Nama-age relished thoroughly afterward reflecting fondly upon first-time visit Tawarahonmachi enriched through historical-cultural immersion unforgettable experiences provided graciously here!

I always use NIPPONIA with confidence, knowing it will never disappoint. This time, I was really looking forward to the soy sauce pressing experience! Although we were a bit rushed due to our late arrival, the staff kindly accommodated us so we could participate without any issues. After learning about various backgrounds, we had the experience and then enjoyed tasting fresh soy sauce, which was wonderful. The dinner course offered various approaches to soy sauce and was very satisfying. The next morning, we were guided around the shrine and surrounding areas with insights into local history, allowing us to enjoy places that we might have otherwise passed by unnoticed. Unique
Attracted by the concept and philosophy of NIPPONIA, this is my fourth stay following Ōzu, Sawara, and Takeda Castle. Unlike previous NIPPONIA stays, this one revives the oldest soy sauce brewery in Nara, "Maruto Soy Sauce Brewery," founded in 1689, by the current eighteenth-generation owner. This NIPPONIA is an active brewery. It is not only a place where soy sauce is brewed but also a property where part of the brewery has been renovated into accommodation. The eighteenth-generation owner welcomes guests as the host. Unlike employees, his strong feelings for the family business and the region are evident in his words. The stories about soy sauce and Nara slowly and thoroughly permeated my heart and body. The soy sauce brewery's philosophy and history of "valuing people," as expressed by the owner, are reflected in everything, from the cuisine to the well-maintained garden and facilities. The meals in the morning and evening are, of course, delicious, but it is also delightful that popular sake breweries like "Kaze no Mori," "Mimuro Sugi," "Ume no Yado," and "Shinomine" are naturally included in the menu in Nara. You can fully savor the terroir of Nara with all five senses. Because of NIPPONIA Tahara Hon Maruto Soy Sauce, I am inspired to take a trip to Nara next time. It is a property that evokes such thoughts.

I had an unexpectedly wonderful experience.
Thank you very much for your hospitality during our stay. We had a more meaningful and enjoyable time with our family than we imagined. We were initially interested because the property was renovated from a soy sauce warehouse, and the room retained many traditional elements in various places. The pillars and beams were wonderful. The parts that were preserved remained, and the renovated areas were modernized, allowing us to stay comfortably. We felt the attention to detail in the meals as well. Having listened to the history of soy sauce making in advance and experienced soy sauce pressing, we felt even more the dedication to soy sauce in the meals. In the morning, we were guided and given explanations at a nearby shrine. Without this explanation, I think the experience would have been less appreciated. We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.
