    Great food! Great people! Great tableware!

    Thank you for taking care of us for two nights as a family. This was our second visit, and the heartfelt dishes made with nama-age soy sauce and tamari soy sauce were wonderful. The tableware, the building, and the amenities all conveyed a true spirit of hospitality. The dishes were original pieces by a ceramic artist, adding color to each meal. For every course, the staff kindly explained each dish in detail, which made everything taste even better. Mr. Kimura’s soy-sauce pressing experience and the morning shrine visit program were also excellent. We were completely satisfied. Even our children (two elementary school students) finished their meals without leaving anything for the first time—the flavors must have been outstanding. We will visit again. Thank you very much.

    It was an unforgettable trip!

    We planned a three-night trip to Nara. The first two nights were at a Hotel near Nara Station, so for the final night we chose this place a little farther out—especially because it offered the rare experience of staying in a soy sauce brewery. It far exceeded our expectations. Right after arriving, we joined the soy sauce pressing experience and were immediately captivated by the owner’s talk. I was truly impressed by the story of how he revived soy sauce making from scratch after his grandfather had been forced to stop after the war. Dinner dishes made with this deeply meaningful soy sauce highlighted mostly home-grown vegetables and let each ingredient shine—everything was exceptional. Even dessert (I think it was crème brûlée?) used soy sauce, and it was genuinely delicious. The Hatsuse Room was also a comfortable, calming space where we could rest well. Not having a TV was actually great. The wooden bath was wonderful too. Breakfast—rice with raw egg, an egg with a white yolk (?), and fresh fried tofu with soy sauce—was simple but the best kind of feast. The staff kindly answered even my husband’s rather unreasonable (laughing) questions, and I admired their sincere hospitality. Visiting in midsummer was lovely, but next time I’d like to return to this Accommodation in another season.

    Tradition and modernity

    The current head of Maruto Soy Sauce is said to be the 18th generation. A soy sauce brewing shed that has been in use since those days has been renovated into an Accommodation building, and the interior has been transformed into a modern, comfortable space. Above all, the in-house tour featuring a “soy sauce pressing experience” is truly special. Before pressing the soy sauce, the head shares the history of Maruto Soy Sauce. In fact, they once stopped making soy sauce during the postwar turmoil—but the current head successfully revived it. Enjoying dishes made primarily with that soy sauce while reflecting on this history makes them feel even more meaningful (though of course, you can simply enjoy them casually!).

    It was an unforgettable stay.

    I had been wanting to try a soy sauce pressing experience for a long time, so I came to visit. I joined casually, but the deeply moving stories you shared left a strong impression on me. Enjoying freshly pressed soy sauce with grilled kuzumochi was exceptionally delicious. I was also happy that there was a lounge where we could freely enjoy wine and coffee. The wine provided happened to be from one of my favorite wineries, which made me even happier. The meal was wonderful—each ingredient’s flavor really stood out, and everything was delicious. There were so many ways to enjoy the soy sauce that my excitement never faded. The Room was very clean and comfortable. All of the staff were incredibly kind, and I’m truly grateful for your hospitality. It was a truly luxurious time for both mind and body. Every time we enjoy the soy sauces we bought as souvenirs, we’re reminded of Maruto Soy Sauce, and my husband and I still talk about how much fun it was whenever it comes up. We’ll be back again.

    A Wonderful Experience

    I love staying at NIPPONIA Hotels, and among them, the Maruto Soy Sauce Accommodation was truly wonderful. Not only was the soy sauce–based cuisine delicious, but it was also a great hands-on experience, including the stories shared during our morning walk. There was a gap at the entrance, so outside noise could be heard clearly; I also wondered if sounds from inside might carry out as well. That part concerned me a little.

    There is a very interesting Hotel in Taharamoto.

    I’d heard that the Nipponia Maruto Soy Sauce Taharamoto Hotel had opened in Taharamoto, where I spent my childhood, and had been meaning to visit someday. Since it’s also an ideal base for shrine visits, I decided to stay here. Although there is no Onsen, the early-morning Muraya Shrine tour led by the head of Maruto Soy Sauce was outstanding. The explanations covered a wide range of topics—from local history to the historical and geopolitical aspects of shrines—and were full of eye-opening insights. It was truly educational and made me want to revisit and study Nara’s history more seriously. Next spring, I’d like to stay here again for cherry blossom season and explore more places. The food is excellent overall, and the sake pairings are superb. However, I’d prefer filet rather than sirloin, as sirloin is a bit too heavy for me. Breakfast is quite small in portion size, but since I drank too much the night before, it actually worked out fine. There’s also a soy sauce pressing experience, which is enjoyable in its own way. I stayed in a spacious Room on the second floor of the main house; it was comfortable and very practical. By the way, the priest at Muraya Shrine—who might even be someone I went to school with—was an unfriendly old curmudgeon, but his calligraphy on the goshuin stamp was impressively beautiful.

    Packed with unforgettable moments!

    Our family of four stayed here and had a wonderful time. On IKYU, we were drawn to the Room and the soy sauce pressing experience, so we made a Reservation. The historic accommodation building and the front desk building felt nostalgic yet refined, allowing us to forget time and everyday life and truly relax. During the soy sauce pressing experience, we were deeply moved to hear from the owner about what happened—and what it meant to them—until they revived this place and soy sauce making. Other participants were in tears as well. The soy sauce filled with that passion felt truly special, and we thoroughly enjoyed it through dishes centered on organic vegetables grown under the chef’s guidance. The meat and fish also showcased outstanding quality, and we were impressed by every single dish. Thank you as well for preparing a special menu for our children. All of the staff were very kind, and it felt like everyone was united around the owner’s vision. We would like to visit Nara again just to stay here. Thank you for such wonderful memories.

    The owner’s heartfel...

    The owner’s heartfelt, thoughtful talk was truly wonderful, and it was a great Accommodation where every staff member clearly embraced that passion in the way they cared for guests. By joining the soy sauce pressing on check-in day and the morning shrine visit the next day, I barely had time to relax in my cozy Kito Room. After staying one night, I felt that—if possible—two nights would be ideal: listen to the talk on day one, take a daytime walk along Yamanobe-no-Michi on day two, return to the Accommodation in the evening, enjoy the lounge, and then unwind in your Room. If I may ask for one thing, I’d love it if the tea-room lounge were also open the next morning and if checkout were a little later. That said, it is already more than wonderful as it is. I thoroughly enjoyed both the soy sauce and even the pressed soy pulp—it was all delicious. When I used the soy sauce at home, my cooking somehow leveled up by about three stages. Incredible umami! Thanks to you, I made such happy memories. Thank you very much.

    It’s an Accommodation I’d love many people to know about.

    The Accommodation itself was wonderful, but what stayed with me even more was the owner’s story of reviving a soy sauce brewery with over 300 years of history. Through soy sauce, my imagination naturally expanded to the lives and feelings of people long ago, and I was quietly moved by the continuity of human life across generations. Combined with Nara’s atmosphere—like touching the source of history—and the sense that prayer is woven into everyday life, I was able to spend time here that can only be found in this place. I highly recommend joining the soy sauce pressing experience and the visit to Muraya Shrine the next morning. Every dish was prepared in a way that let us enjoy soy sauce and moromi through carefully chosen ingredients and cooking methods, and the portions were just right—everything was excellent. Away from everyday noise, I spent time that gently eased both body and mind. Thank you very much.

    An Accommodation that elevates the value of your stay in Nara

    I stayed for one night as a base for visiting Kashihara Shrine, Omiwa Shrine, and Isonokami Shrine. The entire staff welcomed me with the highest level of hospitality, making this an Accommodation I truly want to return to (this was my second stay). It was a chilly morning in March, but I was able to unwind at my own pace and spend the time in comfort. What makes this Accommodation special is the soy sauce experience, morning worship visits, and the meals—supported by the wonderful staff. It may sound simple in words, but being able to engage with soy sauce made from local ingredients, water, yeast, and the seasons; to experience the changing morning scenery along with local life and history throughout the year; and to enjoy an outstanding meal through a tasting comparison of different soy sauces—was an exceptional way to feel Nara with all five senses. By speaking with local people here—from Nara’s history to everyday life today—while they also took into account my journey on foot before arriving at the Accommodation, this trip became even more meaningful.     Gratitude and Respect

    Thanks to the revival of Nara Prefecture’s oldest soy sauce brewery and its careful renovation into a clean Hotel, I was able to fully enjoy a rich, good old Japan. The young and handsome owner gave an evening lecture and guided us on a walk the next morning. My gratitude and respect. I stayed in the “Kurabito” Room. I knew it was the smallest Room, but it had a “secret hideout” feel, and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. The spacious, pleasantly fragrant hinoki bath was great, but it was disappointing that there was no hot water in the morning. The food was outstanding. I’ll be back again. I’d also like to visit other NIPPONIA properties.

    The Only Accommodation

    I chose this place for my Nara trip because I love NIPPONIA, though I arrived without much prior knowledge. During the soy sauce pressing experience guided by the owner himself, I was deeply moved by his passion for reviving the brewery and the support he received from the local community—I could barely hold back tears. The meal, featuring soy sauce in a variety of unique ways, is truly one of a kind and made me want to return in a different season. Although it’s an old building, it has been beautifully renovated, and even in winter it was very comfortable thanks to underfloor heating. I sincerely hope the carp streamers will be brought back in the near future as well. Thank you.

    This was my first return in about two years. Just as I remembered, the nostalgic atmosphere is very calming. I also enjoyed hearing about the restart of miso-making, the aroma of the moromi before pressing, the refreshing morning walk and beautiful scenery, and the delicious dishes paired with soy sauce. I would love to stay again in a different season next time.

    I have stayed at numerous unique accommodations both domestically and internationally, and experienced various things beyond travel, but this was undoubtedly the most exceptional and rare experience. This is an accommodation where you can truly feel the power of authenticity. From the warm welcome upon arrival despite a sudden request, to the soy sauce pressing experience, explanations about Maruto Soy Sauce's history and building, dinner and breakfast service, morning visit to Muraya Shrine, and even transportation to the station—every detail was filled with heartfelt hospitality from the host. Their passionate dedication to rebuilding their family’s soy sauce-making business is evident in every corner. While I thought I had some knowledge of Yamato region's history, through this stay I learned more about its geographical significance and vegetation from the host’s explanations—reminding me how much there is still left to discover in this world. The quality as an accommodation was perfect in every aspect: meals, facilities, and staff service were all outstanding. It’s a place you’ll want to talk about with friends or recommend wholeheartedly!

    Enjoyed the experience centered around specialty soy sauce. The soy sauce pressing activity was a valuable and unique experience. The Room was functional, utilizing the charm of traditional townhouses while offering modern comforts like air conditioning and a modern bath, making it very comfortable. The meals were delicious, but unfortunately, there wasn’t one standout dish that left a lasting impression. Perhaps due to being raised in the Kanto region, having somen noodles as part of breakfast soup didn’t quite suit my taste—I would have preferred delicious miso soup instead. While the soy sauce experience was special, I’m unsure if I’d become a repeat visitor. I also visited Omiwa Shrine as recommended and enjoyed it thoroughly—it seemed very popular with quite a crowd!

    This was my first visit, and the cuisine was exceptional, reflecting the chef's deep passion for ingredients.     A room with large beams, creatively prepared meals, and both my wife and I were deeply impressed. Additionally, we learned about the revival of soy sauce, morning shrine visits, and the history of Nara, allowing us to truly escape from daily life. Thank you very much. The only regret was that the parking lot at Ōmiwa Shrine was full due to the first-day-of-the-month visit tradition, so we had to give up visiting.     A Wonderful Encounter

    During my long-awaited break, I decided to visit Omiwa Shrine, a place I had wanted to see for some time, and stayed at this accommodation. It was my first visit to Nara in about 30 years, and while the trip began with a nostalgic feeling, the owner's efforts to revive soy sauce brewing and their sincere dedication to the local community created a space where "the charm of tradition" and "new challenges" harmonized beautifully. It became an unforgettable experience. The cuisine, utilizing local ingredients, showcased excellent harmony with the flavors of soy sauce and pairing with sake. While already highly refined, it left me excited for further evolution in the future. Additionally, the attentiveness of all staff members was exceptional. Knowing that taxis might be hard to find around Omiwa Shrine, they kindly arranged local transportation in advance before our departure. Their thoughtful gestures during meals and within the room were accompanied by warm smiles throughout our stay. Thanks to them, it became a truly heartwarming experience. I feel this is a wonderful new connection with Nara after many years, and I look forward to visiting again in another season.

    It was an amazing experience.

    We stayed as a family to celebrate my wife's birthday. The accommodation is housed in a building that was once the oldest soy sauce brewery in Nara, and the room we stayed in was beautifully renovated from part of the brewery, offering a comfortable space with both historical charm and modern comfort. Perhaps because it was a special occasion, our meal was arranged at an extraordinary setting fit for welcoming royalty. What stood out most were the various activities, such as a soy sauce pressing experience explained by the owner himself, including details about this revival project, and a morning visit to Muraya Shrine with stunning views of Nara's Mahoroba landscape. It’s rare to have such an enriching accommodation experience that deepens your thoughts on Japanese history and culture. This hotel alone is worth staying at for that reason. Thank you very much!

    It has become a special place for families.

    Day 1: Upon arriving at the accommodation, I felt relieved to see everyone’s warm smiles and hear a heartfelt “Welcome back.” After a short rest, we participated in a soy sauce pressing experience. As I’m not fond of traditional Japanese sweets, I was grateful for the alternative treat provided. By chance, there was an annual festival at Muraya Shrine, where we had the privilege of witnessing sacred Kagura dances and offering our prayers. Day 2: We started with a morning visit to Muraya Shrine at 7 AM. The 18th-generation head of the family personally guided us through local stories during our approximately 50-minute journey. Although it was raining initially and I felt slightly disappointed, Mount Miwa glistened beautifully in the rain. When the clouds parted to reveal the sacred mountain’s ridgeline, it was truly breathtaking. Rainy weather often feels like an inconvenience during trips; however, this time it left us with unforgettable scenery of Mount Miwa in its serene beauty. My son remarked that it reminded him of Du Fu's poem "Spring Night Rain," describing rain as nature’s blessing for all living things. Coincidentally, I had been thinking about Akira Kosemura's piano piece "Spring Night Rain," which made me feel even more connected. For my son, one highlight was undoubtedly the meals—he exclaimed enthusiastically that he’d never tasted rice so delicious on any trip before! He also admired how one young staff member serving dinner used impeccable Japanese etiquette when she humbly responded with “It is nothing extraordinary,” leaving quite an impression on him. This might be one of our last trips together as parent and child for some time—a bittersweet thought indeed. However, my teenage son seemed to fully embrace Japan’s stunning landscapes, traditional soy sauce craftsmanship passed down through generations, elegant architecture, and above all else—the warm hospitality from everyone at your accommodation—with all his senses engaged deeply throughout this journey. Our trip to Nara turned out to be much more than just sightseeing; it became an extraordinary experience filled with meaningful moments. Lastly but most importantly—thank you very much for your thoughtful care regarding my knee icing needs!

    It was a series of moving and inspiring moments.

    I always refer to reviews when choosing accommodations. I happened to find this accommodation and, seeing so many positive reviews, I wondered if it could really be true (laughs), so I decided to stay. It was no lie! The renovated soy sauce brewery room was very clean and relaxing. The shampoo and lotion were also excellent. The owner's explanation of the history was detailed and moving. The freshly pressed soy sauce was incredibly delicious! The food was visually stunning and tasted amazing, with many dishes I had never tried before. The staff were all very polite and attentive, making my stay truly enjoyable. I’ve decided to come back again. Thank you for everything!

    I have stayed at various accommodations before, but this was the best hospitality I have ever experienced. I thoroughly enjoyed the history and scenery of Tawaramoto in Nara, which made me even more interested in Nara. Additionally, I got to appreciate the depth of soy sauce and the cuisine was excellent. Next time, I would love to visit for lunch or dinner as well.

    Spent a luxurious time.

    This is not your typical activity experience. Learn about history and background. Discover the culture. Experience a unique space, sounds, scents, scenery, and touch that can only be found here through this accommodation. Such a luxurious time. This is because you can enjoy the best parts of a world view that has been reconstructed and created over many years in the form of accommodation. It was a deeply enriching experience. The taste of soy sauce redefined my perception of it—it was that delicious. Even after returning home, I couldn't help but want to share this joy with someone else. Thank you very much!

    A place you'll want to return to every season

    My main purpose for the trip was something else, but my stay here left such a deep impression that it overshadowed everything else. Staying in a historic soy sauce brewery was already an amazing experience, but participating in the soy sauce pressing activity and visiting the shrine in the morning made it even more special. Hearing from the owner about reviving soy sauce brewing and their passion for the local community was truly moving. The meals were thoughtfully prepared, showcasing the potential of soy sauce. The vegetables grown by the chef were also incredibly delicious. The room, amenities, and meals were all excellent, but what touched me most was the heartfelt hospitality from everyone besides just the owner. After checking out, I borrowed a bicycle to visit Ōmiwa Shrine and Muraya Shrine for dual worshipping. I even received a special goshuin book as a wonderful keepsake of this trip. I would love to stay again during another season! This experience made me fall in love with Nara!

    I stayed at this accommodation through a friend's recommendation, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. Staying in a soy sauce brewery is a rare and unique opportunity that cannot be found elsewhere, making it truly special. The interior of the brewery has been beautifully renovated while preserving its original structure, providing a very comfortable stay. The soy sauce served with the meals was incredibly delicious—unlike anything I've ever tasted before. I even purchased some as souvenirs, and I doubt I'll ever go back to regular supermarket soy sauce! During the morning walk, I learned about the local history and gained a deeper appreciation for the charm of areas like Nara and Tawaramoto. The soy sauce pressing experience allowed me to witness processes rarely seen in daily life, which was incredibly valuable. Above all, I was deeply moved by the passion of the owner who revived traditional soy sauce-making practices. The staff were all kind and attentive, ensuring my stay was extremely comfortable. This is an amazing accommodation where you can truly immerse yourself in history and culture—I highly recommend visiting at least once!

    Luxurious Serenity

    We stayed as a family of three and had a wonderful experience. Living in the Kansai area, we picked out several nearby places to visit, and this accommodation seemed like a great choice. It turned out to be the perfect decision to stay here, and we were extremely satisfied! As it is connected to a soy sauce brewery, they not only explain the process of making soy sauce but also share its long history and the thoughts of successive owners. We could truly feel the passion behind the soy sauce brewing process. I never imagined that such sacred stories existed in Tawarahonmachi, and I’m glad I got to learn about them. They offer an experiential tour program that I highly recommend participating in—it will make your stay even more enjoyable! The meals were rich in flavor with plenty of seasonal vegetables, as well as delicious fish and meat dishes. While not overly extravagant or flashy, every dish was incredibly satisfying—simply delicious from start to finish! It reminded me that true taste doesn’t necessarily come from luxurious ingredients alone. There’s also a separate room where you can enjoy all-inclusive drinks and light snacks; it was fun just soaking up the atmosphere there. This accommodation offers an immersive experience that I especially recommend for those who love Japanese history. It made me feel truly grateful to have been born in Japan. From beginning to end, their warm hospitality left us feeling deeply appreciated—thank you so much!
