    Excellent

    Thank you for your hospitality. I had no complaints at all, and the Italian meals were very satisfying. The pudding dessert at the end was incredibly rich, and I would love to have it again. Next time I visit, I'll be torn between choosing Japanese cuisine or sticking with the excellent Italian dishes. When I went for a walk, it started raining heavily, and I went out without an umbrella. However, when I called for help, you kindly came to pick me up, which was truly appreciated. Thank you so much! The bath in the Room was also fantastic—I ended up using it multiple times. Recently, many places that attract foreign visitors have significantly increased their prices; however, this Ryokan offers great value for money. One thing that caught my attention was the continued display of COVID-19 precautionary signs—for example, asking guests not to talk inside elevators. Perhaps it's time to consider removing these? While being cautious is understandable, seeing these signs reminds me of how challenging those times were during COVID-19. In any case, this was a wonderful Japanese Ryokan experience. I'll definitely visit again!

    From the first parki...

    From the first parking lot to the last, the staff's hospitality was exceptional. If I have another opportunity to visit Gero Onsen, I would love to stay here again. The cuisine was meticulously prepared and delightful, especially the fish served with foam soy sauce and Hida beef, which were truly impressive. Even the final drink was enjoyable.     Accommodation with the finest hospitality.

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother and her friend's 88th birthday (for two guests). The hospitality and attentiveness of everyone, including the proprietress, were excellent. Both my mother and I were extremely satisfied. We look forward to visiting again for the 90th birthday celebration.

    It was excellent.

    We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary. The room was very comfortable with cozy beds, a living area with a sofa, and a large TV where you can relax and even watch Netflix. The bedroom and living area were separated by a long low counter, which was convenient for placing small items. The refrigerator was stocked with complimentary drinks: two bottles each of beer, tea, and water. There were also two yukatas with different patterns provided for each of us. For the celebration, they prepared red celebratory attire (a traditional vest and hat) for us to wear and took photos that were beautifully compiled into an album as a gift. Since we don’t have children to celebrate such occasions for us, this thoughtful gesture made us incredibly happy. To our surprise, we also received a pair of plates in an elegant wooden box adorned with ceremonial wrapping from the beautiful proprietress herself. This heartfelt consideration truly moved us. If you’re considering gifting your parents an Onsen experience for their special occasion, this accommodation would be an excellent choice. It became such a memorable day for us—thank you so much!

    Famous Hot Springs with Renowned Accommodation

    When you park your car, the bell staff will greet you and assist with your luggage, guiding you to the front desk. Check-in is done at the counter. The building appears to have undergone multiple renovations and expansions over time, reflecting its long-standing history. The interior exudes a sense of luxury with signs of thoughtful updates. While the hallways are narrow and long, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The room we stayed in was a corner room overlooking the road, with beautifully lit cherry blossoms (just starting to shed petals) visible from the window. Thanks to double-glazed windows, no traffic noise could be heard. A kimono-clad attendant served matcha tea in our room upon arrival. The layout included a tatami-matted Japanese-style living area with wooden swivel chairs and a large table, a bedroom separated by sliding doors featuring beds, as well as private spaces for washing up, toilet facilities, and bath—a somewhat intricate design but meticulously clean without any signs of wear or damage. The floor heating added extra comfort. There was an open-air bath separated by transparent walls offering views of green mountain slopes across the road; it could be fully opened if desired despite having screens and lattice doors closed initially for privacy or weather conditions. The water temperature remained perfect around-the-clock in this stone-paved bath partially covered with tatami mats on its floor surface—large enough for family use—with wooden edges on its stone tub that showcased pride in using materials sensitive yet authentic to Onsen culture. There was one washing station available near this private bath area where slight slipperiness at its bottom seemed natural due solely because it’s genuine Onsen water quality itself! Towels & yukatas were abundantly provided throughout our stay too! Dinner served inside-room lived up-to glowing reviews online being culinary delight showcasing attention-to-detail within every dish presented while meats weren’t pre-cooked instead guests grilled them personally atop individual stoves provided ensuring freshness albeit minor concerns arose regarding lingering smells/oil residues potentially affecting pristine interiors though prioritizing guest preferences clearly took precedence here! Incidentally entire premises enforced strict non-smoking policy which expanded choices among rooms available making us grateful towards management's bold decision taken thoughtfully indeed! Service rendered especially via attentive Nakai-san assigned consistently even during breakfast next morning reflected seamless coordination efforts behind-the-scenes ensuring utmost satisfaction overall experience altogether highly recommendable accommodation option worth considering undoubtedly!!     Disappointing accommodation except for meals and hot spring quality.

    The management might not be in the best condition, but I hope they will strive to improve post-inbound tourism. Therefore, I am writing this critical review with high expectations. Firstly, it seems that the ryokan has not properly studied what a ryokan is and what guests are looking for. It felt like an accommodation left behind by the times. Every year during this season, we take a long trip by car, and this year our final stop was Suimeien. The good part was the quality of the onsen water—it allowed us to experience Gero Onsen. However, due to poor cleaning of the first-floor bath area, there were so many hairs floating that it felt unpleasant and impossible to enjoy soaking in the bath. The time we used it was around 5 PM. Normally I wouldn’t pay much attention to such details, but since there was a cleaning checklist near the massage chair area showing times at 1 PM, 4 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM—with no checks after 1 PM—I decided to look into it further. I stayed near the massage chair until about 6:30 PM but saw no one come for cleaning during that time either. The next morning at around 9:30 AM while using the open-air bath on the fifth floor (as I didn’t feel comfortable returning downstairs), vacuuming noises could be heard even in this relaxing space—so much so that frustration led me to call reception asking them to stop. Despite not being a budget accommodation by any means—there were numerous areas where cost-cutting seemed evident: from unappetizing lounge coffee or tea snacks; dim lighting everywhere except washbasins equipped with motion sensors; dining areas hallways lobby lounges—all other spaces remained poorly lit throughout my stay. Even small details like paper towels replacing proper ones across all touchpoints—from arrival through meals—and minimal amenities including recycled toilet paper stood out negatively compared against expectations set forth given pricing levels charged here today! While typically avoiding leaving such feedback publicly via Google Reviews etc., absence guestroom surveys prompted sharing thoughts directly instead hoping constructive criticism helps future improvements made possible soon enough! Lastly though desserts particularly pudding served alongside meals tasted exceptional overall culinary efforts showcased care preparation unfortunately overshadowed shortcomings elsewhere detracting overall experience significantly nonetheless wishing continued success striving towards becoming comparable esteemed properties Yufuin Tamano-yu Amanohashidate Tsumihira Kusatsu Tsutsujitei alike someday ahead!

    Comfortable Stay

    Although the rainy weather prevented us from exploring the Gero Onsen area, we had an enjoyable stay thanks to the warm hospitality of the staff, including the proprietress, a clean room, a pleasant private bath in the room, and delicious meals.

    It was an accommodation with great satisfaction.

    We visited Gero Onsen for the first time to celebrate my husband's birthday. The room was clean, and the private open-air onsen had just the right temperature. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious and impressive (we even received celebratory red rice for the birthday). The hostess and staff were attentive and provided excellent hospitality. It was a perfect accommodation, and we would love to visit again.

    Parents' Birthdays + Father's 60th Birthday Celebration

    We gifted a trip to our parents for their birthdays and my father's 60th birthday celebration, and we chose this hotel for their stay. When we shared the reason for the stay, mentioning the birthday and 60th celebration, they kindly suggested preparing a traditional red vest (chan-chan-ko) and taking commemorative photos. The welcome matcha tea was offered thoughtfully, and when we mentioned being full, they brought dessert from dinner to the room instead. We also heard that the hotel provided a birthday gift, which made us feel how considerate they are. Both my father and mother were extremely satisfied with this ryokan, calling it amazing! They even sent us videos of their room tour with excitement. The meals, rooms, and hospitality—everything was perfect! Thank you so much!!

    Travel with long-time friends

    A journey that started with two couples saving for travel has continued for 25 years, taking us to various places in Japan every year and sharing joyful moments together. However, one friend's husband began battling illness, leading to the cancellation of our travel savings. In September last year, he embarked on his final journey alone. We had hoped to continue traveling together for much longer... After 100 days passed, memories of our shared trips and the places we wanted to visit—like Gero Onsen—came up in conversation. Determined to bring my friend out from her days of mourning, we decided to take a trip! Nostalgic stories surfaced at every turn during this trip. For my friend, it was her first journey in two years. Thanks to the staff at Suimeien Ryokan who made us laugh and provided warm hospitality, it became a relaxing and cheerful trip filled with smiles. Though forgetfulness among the three of us caused an unexpected mishap at the end that inconvenienced others, your team responded kindly right away. We even managed to enjoy Gero pudding along the way! Thank you so much. To everyone at Suimeien Ryokan: your thoughtful care deeply touched us alongside Gero Onsen's soothing waters—it seemed even my friend's lonely heart was comforted. This has become a Ryokan we wish to visit again someday. We look forward to seeing you next time!

    Impressive Cuisine

    I stayed at Suifuen Ryokan with my mother for a long-awaited onsen trip. We chose this ryokan based on reviews praising the delicious food, and it truly lived up to the expectations. From appetizers to desserts, every dish was satisfying. The drink selection was also impressive, with a variety of wines and alcoholic beverages that we thoroughly enjoyed. Although I usually don't eat plain rice, it was so delicious that I ended up having two extra servings! The onsen is small but very clean, with towels provided in the bath area, making it easy to enjoy multiple visits throughout our stay. The service was exceptional—staff were kind and attentive at all times. They even prepared white tea for us upon departure and provided a plastic umbrella when we needed one due to rain, always responding warmly without hesitation. All staff members offered consistent hospitality, making our experience truly pleasant. This is a wonderful ryokan that makes you want to visit again!

    We made a Reservation for two as a couple A few weeks ago Our daughter decided to join us later, and the staff handled it efficiently From the moment we arrived at the parking lot, The service was incredibly polite and truly impressive We were very satisfied with this charming Ryokan We were looking forward to enjoying the Gin no Mikazuki rice, but It was slightly softer than expected, which was a bit disappointing. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying in every way. The Onsen is not very large, but you can fully enjoy Gero Onsen. This is a Ryokan we would love to visit again. Thanks to the wonderful hospitality of the lovely Okami-san (hostess), it became an unforgettable trip!

    First Time at Gero Onsen

    We stayed for two nights in February. The entire facility, not just the room, was impeccably clean and very comfortable. The staff's hospitality was excellent, always greeting us with warm smiles. We also enjoyed chatting with the room attendant who shared many interesting stories—thank you! The Shuttle Service staff were very helpful despite the extra effort required due to the snow. For meals, we changed our first night's dinner to an Italian-style course at the dining area "Shingetsu," which was absolutely delicious. The Japanese-style breakfast served in our room was well-balanced and suited our tastes perfectly. The semi-open-air bath in our room was spacious and allowed us to relax and enjoy a wonderful soak. It felt great to warm up after being chilled by the snow. The unexpected heavy snowfall provided a beautiful snowy landscape for us to admire. We would love to visit again during a different season!

    My first visit to Gero Onsen, and I chose Suimeien based on its great reviews. I stayed in the most affordable room (a room without an onsen), but it was comfortable. Highlights: - Although the tatami in the room showed some wear and tear, everything was clean, including inside the three-sided mirror. - Meals were served in a private dining area, allowing for a relaxed experience. - The convenience of checking bath congestion via tablet was excellent. - No need to bring towels to the bath; very convenient. - Each guest had two yukatas prepared from the start, so even with multiple baths, we could wear fresh ones each time. The different designs were also a nice touch. - The provided drawstring bag (made of fabric but lined with waterproof material) was perfect for carrying wet items—an idea I hope other ryokans adopt! Plus, we could take it home! - Slippers had designated storage per room, ensuring hygiene by avoiding mix-ups with others' slippers. - Complimentary drinks like coffee were available anytime—a fantastic feature! A couple of minor points: - The floor in the 5th-floor bath's changing area creaked in places, showing signs of aging in the building. - My husband is abstaining from alcohol and I don't drink either; however, we were still asked about aperitifs despite emailing beforehand to request non-alcoholic options. The staff at this accommodation were kind and made our stay truly memorable. I'd love to visit again someday—thank you so much!

    Breakfast and dinner are very satisfying.

    The room was the most reasonable 10-tatami mat Japanese-style room, but it had been renovated and was very clean and beautiful. The dinner we were looking forward to, starting with the appetizer, wasn't cold (usually cold because it's pre-made), and I thought this is high level! As expected, every dish up to the final dessert was very delicious. Breakfast was also satisfying in both quality and quantity, as expected from a kaiseki Property. However, the temperature in the room couldn't be adjusted much, and since there was underfloor heating as well, it felt quite hot.

    Overall, the hospitality was excellent. Additionally, the atmosphere of the open-air bath in the Room I stayed in was pleasant, and the quality of the Onsen water was good. It was a Property that made me want to visit again if I come to Gero, and I was very satisfied.

    It was very good.

    This was my second visit to Gero and my first time at Suihoen. As the name suggests, the cuisine at this property was incredibly delicious. Many claim to be proud of their food, but there are few places where it is actually tasty; however, I believe this place undoubtedly has great cuisine. The baths were also nice as the indoor bath and open-air bath are on separate floors, so it wasn't crowded. I'm looking forward to visiting again.

    Impressed by the allergy-friendly dishes.

    The allergy-friendly dishes were prepared with such sincerity that I was touched by the warmth and impressed by the distinct flavors of the ingredients. I was also amazed by the beauty of the snow-capped mountains and garden visible from the Room's open-air bath. I would love to visit again.

    It was a property that suited us.

    I visit Gero Onsen about 2 to 4 times a year. It was my first time staying at Suimeien, and both my wife and I were satisfied. A quiet property with less than 20 rooms in the entire building. The staff are well-trained, attentive to every detail, and there are no complaints about the service. Each dish was explained, making delicious food even more enjoyable; the timing of serving was perfect—not rushed nor delayed—and I was satisfied with the ryokan meal for the first time in a while. The Hida beef at night and Hoba miso in the morning were delicious, but all of the sashimi—tuna, salmon, sea bream—were tasty as well; it was my first time trying soy sauce paste which left me impressed. The dessert pudding was also delicious; meals were perfect. Although not large, the public bath is well-cleaned and I could bathe alone without encountering other guests; towels are provided so you can go from your room empty-handed. Needless to say, Gero Onsen's water quality is excellent and among them our property's water quality is very good too. My throat and respiratory system were not in good condition causing occasional coughing fits but after soaking up to my shoulders while taking deep breaths several times now almost all coughing has stopped which surprises me greatly. Only standard rooms in main building were available this time so next visit I'd like to stay in an open-air bath room instead as comparing accommodation fees satisfaction seems higher there despite no dissatisfaction regarding cleanliness or anything else within current room itself either way though having stayed at various ryokans around Gero Onsen will definitely repeat here again next wanting try course meal offered by Kamizuki located within facility premises itself!

    We celebrated my mother's 80th birthday.

    We were taken care of during our mother-daughter trip. I was deeply moved by the wonderful gift and the photo taken for my mother, who celebrated her 80th birthday on March 3rd. The food was very delicious, and all the staff were kind; I would love to visit again. Next time, I would like to bring my father along too.

    It was wonderful!

    Despite the severe cold wave, the highway was closed due to heavy snow until the day before, but on the day of arrival, it was reopened and we were able to reach our destination. We traveled with two children and were very satisfied with the spacious Room and its bath. The Room also had floor heating in various places, which made it a bit warm at night, but since each area could be turned off with switches, it wasn't a problem. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in our Room, and everything was exquisite; especially the sashimi for dinner (particularly toro and nodoguro) and Hida beef were impressive. The rice called Gin no Mikazuki was also extremely delicious. Despite some remaining snow outside, we could enjoy viewing the snowy landscape from the open-air bath in our Room, which was wonderful. We would like to visit again on another occasion.

    As expected from a kaiseki Property, the meals were very delicious, and the breakfast had so many dishes that it was almost impossible to finish them all. The bathing area allowed us to check the crowd level using a tablet, so we could enjoy a relaxing bath. Since there aren't many guest rooms, the service was attentive, and we had a very pleasant stay.

    It was the best Stays!

    I visited with my father and mother, who is in their 88th year. Since my parents can't walk much, we used the "Kochouran" room, which has an open-air bath and allows us to have both dinner and breakfast in the room. The room was spacious and relaxing, with a bedroom, a Japanese-style room, a room with a dining table and a large TV, two toilets, and two washbasins. My mother loves sumo wrestling and enjoyed watching it on the big screen TV. The staff was all very hospitable and wonderful, and each dish was delicious. My mother, who usually leaves food at other Ryokan, finished everything, which made me happy! I was also impressed by the handwritten menu by the owner! The portions were so generous that we were almost bursting! The room was very clean, and my mother, who is a germaphobe, was pleased with the thorough cleaning. The room's bath had both an open-air bath and an indoor bath, both with perfect water temperature, warming the body, and the quality of the spring made the skin smooth and soft. The autumn leaves on the mountain in front of the open-air bath were beautiful, and we enjoyed watching the deepening of the autumn colors in just one day. The layout allowed easy access to the open-air bath from the bedroom, so every time I woke up at night, I soaked in the bath while enjoying the pleasant night breeze, watching the lights of the Gero Onsen town, the dawn breaking, the birds chirping, the sound of the river flowing, and the constant sound of water pouring into the bath... it was all just perfect. The property is a bit away from the Gero Onsen town, and while I was worried about the return trip as we descended the slope on the way there, we found ourselves climbing quite a bit without realizing it as we strolled back, and it was just a short walk after passing under the overpass! I was on the fourth day of a slipped disc and not confident in my stamina, but it was just the right amount of exercise to work off the meal. You can borrow geta for outings, but since it was hard to walk in them, I changed into sneakers from the car. Sneakers are recommended for strolling around the Onsen town! Also, the tabi socks and the tote bag provided for going to the large bath or open-air bath were stylish, and the attention to detail was wonderful, making it a truly heartfelt and excellent Stays!     This is my fourth stay.

    I liked the room with a garden bath, so I stayed there until last time, but this time I stayed in a newly renovated room. The amenities are standard, but since we don't use much other than toothbrushes and cotton at the property, there was no problem. The water, tea, and beer in the refrigerator are free, and the socks placed with the yukata are thicker and stretch well compared to other onsen stays, making them easy to wear. I personally appreciate the high-quality tissue paper and toilet paper. As always, everything is well-cleaned and has a sense of cleanliness, and the food is beautifully presented on lovely plates and all delicious. The rice is also a wonderful and delicious variety called Gin no Mikazuki, cooked to perfection, so I was glad to visit during the new rice season. As always, the service was courteous, and I was able to spend a pleasant and relaxing time. This time, I only used the room bath, but even with two people, we could stretch our legs comfortably, and our skin became smooth, allowing us to fully enjoy it. I hope to visit again when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.
