    Whether due to understaffing or a lack of skill, the service felt rushed overall. There were mistakes and inattentive hospitality. Especially during meals, the staff’s attitude, the way dishes were served, and errors in the order of courses stood out as concerning points. The hot spring water quality was good.

    The Room, Onsen, and service were all very good; however, although this is described as an Accommodation offering kaiseki cuisine, the basic principle of serving hot dishes hot was not met, so the food was disappointing.

    I’m completely satisfied with everything!

    I was able to relax and enjoy both the open-air bath and the large public bath. The Room was clean and spacious, and the bath in the Room was very pleasant as well. The food was truly delicious—I was impressed. The staff were very courteous, and I wished I could have stayed one more night. I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, but my friend and I agreed this Accommodation exceeded our expectations in every way. I’d love to stay again. Thank you!

    A renowned Accommodation in Gero Onsen that will make you want to stay again

    This was my fifth stay in Gero Onsen, and personally, this Accommodation ranks among the top one or two in terms of overall satisfaction. I can confidently recommend it to anyone unsure about where to stay in Gero Onsen. All staff were consistently courteous and pleasant—from the welcome, to the meals, to the send-off. The Onsen was outstanding both in the open-air bath in the Room and in the large public bath. The water had a silky, slightly thick feel—like soaking in a high-quality lotion—and left my skin smooth after bathing. It was a spring quality that made me want to soak again and again. In particular, I recommend the 5th-floor open-air bath over the 1st floor; you can relax while enjoying views of nature. The Room was very clean and well maintained, and having both an indoor bath and an open-air bath meant we could be fully satisfied even without leaving the Room. Having two toilets was also very convenient. Dinner was an Italian-style kaiseki course—both beautiful and delicious. The Hida beef filet steak was excellent, of course, but I especially recommend ordering the garlic rice as an add-on; it’s a must-try. That said, portions were a little modest, so I would have been even happier if there were services like onigiri for a late-night snack. A bit more presentation or table-side flair would also make it even more memorable. The garden was beautifully maintained and very soothing. A couple of minor points: there wasn’t any cleansing oil provided at the 5th-floor open-air bath, and breakfast was served only as in-room dining. Personally I’d have liked an option to eat at a dining area as well, but for those who prefer meals in their Room, this is great. Overall, this was truly a highly satisfying Accommodation. When I visit Gero Onsen again, I would definitely like to return.

    Second Visit

    This time, we stayed in the Jindō Room. The Room was spacious, and being a corner Room, it also had a great view. In addition to the open-air bath, it even had an indoor bath—more than enough for a truly comfortable stay. For dinner, since we had the Kamizuki course last time, we enjoyed kaiseki cuisine at Kyōcha-an Hanaka this time. It offered a different style and was absolutely delicious. As expected of an Accommodation known for kaiseki dining, we were very satisfied. We had dessert from dinner in our Room; on the way back, we stopped by the lounge and enjoyed it slowly with coffee. It was delicious—the pudding was outstanding! It’s rare to find an Accommodation that offers both excellent Onsen (water quality) and great food, but Suifūen is definitely a place we’d like to visit again. (It would be perfect if it were 100% free-flowing from the source.) We would love to return again.

    We used the hometown tax donation program for our stay. We were deeply moved by the heartfelt hospitality shown by the proprietress and everyone at the Ryokan. Thanks to your help delivering our luggage to our next Accommodation the following day, we were able to fully enjoy the Sanno Festival without any worries. Thank you very much. The food was delicious, of course, and we were also impressed by the beautiful tableware, well-balanced ingredients, and the chance to savor Hida beef—we were completely satisfied. The Onsen had a pleasantly silky feel and was at just the right temperature; we could have stayed in it forever. We would love to stay here again when we visit Gero, and we would recommend it to anyone going to Gero Onsen. It became an unforgettable trip for us.

    This was our first stay, traveling with my elderly mother. I informed you in advance that she has difficulty walking, and moving smoothly from our Room to the dining area and the large public bath was very easy. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. We requested a low-salt, low-carb meal course this time, and it was so delicious that we never felt it was restricted—truly satisfying cuisine. The Room wasn’t especially large, but it was very well cleaned and comfortable. I was happy that the hair dryer was a ReFa. It would have been even better if there had been an accessory tray. It’s hard to get a Reservation, but it’s a place we want to visit again and again. We’d love to come back.

    Rooms with an open-air bath are well worth it, even at a higher price.

    Although we stayed for only one night, the service was excellent and the meals were generous. The guest room had both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and there was also a large public bath on the top floor. Quiet and comfortable, with attentive staff from arrival to checkout—an Accommodation we highly recommend.

    Highly satisfied

    We were extremely satisfied with this Accommodation! First of all, the proprietress, who looks absolutely wonderful in a kimono, was delightful. Everyone was kind and attentive to my elderly mother as well, explaining everything clearly—we truly appreciate it. The Room and the bath were clean, stylish, and very comfortable. The cuisine was delicately and carefully prepared; everything was delicious, and the service during the meal was excellent. And the Hida beef was outstanding! On our way home, my mother and I even found ourselves talking about when we could come back next. It became a truly fun and deeply satisfying mother-and-daughter trip. We would love to visit again!     I had a truly wonderful stay to celebrate my 60th birthday.

    Thank you very much for all your help during our stay. From start to finish, we truly felt your thoughtful hospitality. The Room had just been renovated and was in pristine condition, filled with the fresh scent of new wood—an extremely pleasant space. The floor plan was carefully designed, allowing my wife and me to spend time comfortably without worrying about each other. The bathroom and the private open-air bath attached to the Room were also excellent in every respect—layout, size, materials, and fixtures—and we had no inconvenience or complaints at all. True to the name “kaiseki Accommodation,” dinner was not a gimmicky menu but a classic kaiseki course. Every dish was perfectly balanced: the five basic tastes—sweetness, umami, bitterness, acidity, and saltiness—were neither too strong nor too weak, but seasoned to perfection. It is rare to find cuisine that is this satisfying through its essential flavors alone, without excessive presentation or unnecessary embellishment. The ingredients used were also of the highest quality and prepared in their best possible state—it was even moving. If I may offer one minor point: both in our advance discussion and on the menu for the day, I believed the aperitif would be changed to a non-alcoholic fruit vinegar drink; however, local sake was served instead (which I did have). Perhaps your heartfelt desire to celebrate my 60th birthday threw off the arrangements a little (laughs). One more thing: while my wife seemed fine—and it may have been due to my condition—the Room felt dry and irritated my throat. Even so, when I mentioned this to our attendant at breakfast, a humidifier was promptly prepared and delivered to our Room. I felt sorry for the trouble while also being impressed by how thoroughly you focus on hospitality. In any case, being celebrated at this milestone of 60 years with such wonderful hospitality and cuisine became a cherished memory. Next time we visit Gero as well, we would love to stay again at Kaiseki Accommodation Suihoen. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for the exceptional hospitality.

    For our first stay at the "Kochouran" room of Suimeien during a long-awaited return to Gero, I invited my mother and aunt from my hometown. Thanks to the barrier-free design, the room was wheelchair accessible and very comfortable, allowing us to relax at ease. The dinner, served in small portions, was delightful with dishes like rice cooked in an earthen pot (Gin no Mikazuki) and Hida beef—truly satisfying. The handmade tofu and rolled omelet served for breakfast were also delicious. The hot spring quality was exceptional; we enjoyed bathing four times during our one-night stay, including in the private indoor bath. We would love to visit Suimeien again next time!     A Long-Awaited Visit to Gero

    We stayed at Gero Onsen as a couple after a long time. The room was quiet with a pleasant wooden scent, warm with floor heating, and we could relax by soaking in the private open-air bath. The meals were delicious and just the right amount. The staff, especially the attendant, were very kind, and the front desk team greeted us with warm smiles—thank you! The ryokan's original pudding was incredibly tasty. We would love to stay again!

    It was excellent.

    I had an amazing experience at Gero Onsen. Although reservations were fully booked, I managed to secure a standard room due to a cancellation. The service from check-in was pleasant and welcoming. While it’s not located in the central part of town, it’s within walking distance, and the proximity to the morning market makes the location convenient. The room was slightly small and some facilities felt a bit dated, but I still had a comfortable stay. If I had been able to book a room with an onsen, it would have been perfect. The meals were incredibly delicious, featuring local ingredients and premium items with rich flavors. The onsen included both an open-air bath and an indoor bath available anytime, which was fantastic. The water temperature was just right. This is a highly recommended accommodation for staying in Gero Onsen. There were many autographs from celebrities displayed, which is understandable given the quality of this place. I’d love to stay here again when visiting next time!

    It was a great accommodation with excellent hospitality. I stayed in a reasonably priced room and was satisfied. A few minor critiques: - The sliding door of the service room made quite a loud noise when opened or closed, which was unpleasant. It would be appreciated if you could consider measures such as closing the door slowly or adding cushioning materials like sponge to the stopper area. - Although it may not be possible immediately, I felt that the public bath was slightly small. Considering Gero is such a famous Onsen area, it felt a bit disappointing. Perhaps rooms with private open-air baths are standard here? - The price seemed slightly too high (at this price point, there are other good accommodations available).

    Unexpectedly

    I had heard of Gero Onsen before, but it wasn't a familiar place to me. The Onsen water was colorless and transparent with a faint scent, but it made my skin incredibly smooth. Even after getting out of the Onsen, I felt so relaxed. The beer after the bath was absolutely delicious. The room seemed to have been renovated and was very comfortable and easy to use. Above all, the food was outstanding—the Hida beef melted in my mouth, and even the rice had a wonderful aroma. Choosing this Ryokan was definitely the right decision!

    The meals were disappointing.

    Stayed on the first day of the three-day weekend in September. It was a small but impeccably clean accommodation. Here are some pros and cons: 【Pros】 - The annex where we stayed was child-free, providing a calm and relaxing space. - Though the public bath was small, there was an exclusive private bath for annex guests that could be used multiple times without reservation. It was also convenient to check availability from the room. - Freshly brewed coffee in the lounge made for a cozy experience. - The refrigerator in the guest room had a few complimentary drinks, and amenities like lotion and shampoo were excellent. 【Cons】 The meals were disappointing despite being advertised as kaiseki cuisine... While each dish tasted fine individually: - Lukewarm dobin mushi (matsutake mushroom broth). We were told it would be ready when the solid fuel burned out, but it ended up lukewarm—too lukewarm! The matsutake mushrooms were undercooked, and gingko nuts felt raw inside. This dish is supposed to be one of the highlights of kaiseki cuisine but turned out to be quite underwhelming at what should have been an exciting moment during dinner. - Again with lukewarm food—the salt-grilled ayu fish took 20 minutes after being told it would take time to prepare; however, when served, it wasn’t hot but rather cold and tough instead of tender as expected from freshly grilled fish—a letdown after such anticipation! - Hida beef steak slices (three pieces) served as part of grilled dishes didn’t meet expectations either; while portion size seemed appropriate overall presentation lacked excitement due partly due thin cuts overpowering seasoning masking natural flavors better complemented by simple salt/soy sauce options allowing diners personal preference     This was my first stay at Gero Onsen. The room I stayed in was absolutely wonderful—spacious, clean, and beautifully designed. I enjoyed both the indoor and open-air baths in the room multiple times. The water had a silky texture that left my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. The showerhead and hairdryer in the private bath were from ReFa, which was a nice touch. Since the Ryokan has only a few rooms, I hardly encountered other guests and could relax peacefully. Both dinner and breakfast were luxurious and incredibly delicious. I am grateful to the staff who took care of us—the attendant for our room and meals, the front desk staff, as well as the proprietress. Thank you very much; I would love to visit again!

    We appreciate the warm hospitality and delicious cuisine.

    This is a rare Ryokan where the proprietress takes the lead in management with responsibility and dedication. It is a small-scale Ryokan that prioritizes guest satisfaction. We arrived slightly before the check-in time, but we were warmly welcomed without any unpleasant reactions. Upon entering the room, we found an A4 sheet placed visibly, indicating the name of the cleaner, cleaning date and time, as well as the inspector's name and inspection date. The room was spotless and well-prepared, providing a sense of reassurance. Not only the proprietress but also all staff members were polite and conveyed their heartfelt hospitality, leaving us with a warm impression. For dinner, although Japanese cuisine is usually served here, we opted for Hida beef kaiseki at my wife's request this time. The dishes featured high-quality ingredients such as Hida beef and Ise lobster along with many local products skillfully prepared. The server explained each dish clearly without rushing through it and demonstrated excellent timing in serving. Breakfast was Japanese-style with a wide variety of healthy dishes thoughtfully prepared. Particularly memorable were grilled sweetfish (Amago) on aluminum foil over a stove and rice enjoyed with fried tofu or Hoba miso. The only slight inconvenience for us was using the traditional Japanese-style room since both my wife and I have back pain or knee issues respectively. Although there were Western chairs available in addition to floor cushions (zaisu), getting up or sitting down proved challenging at times; some adjustments would be appreciated if possible. While our first day’s experience was nearly perfect already—the second day exceeded expectations even further! During checkout conversations between myself & talkative proprietress revealed disruptions affecting Takayama Main Line train services alongside limited bus options heading towards Nagoya city requiring advance reservations instead—promptly arranging transport assistance ensuring timely arrival safely back home after completing necessary cancellations/refunds smoothly thanks entirely due diligence shown by everyone involved including her team alike! Although unable explore Gero town fully during current trip itself—we look forward returning someday soon staying once again leisurely sightseeing around area properly next opportunity arises!

    Traveling with an elderly person and my mother

    When thinking of Gero Onsen, I used to imagine only large famous onsen ryokans, but Suimeien was a cozy and homely onsen accommodation. The highlight was definitely the meals. The quality of the ingredients and the relaxed dining atmosphere made it enjoyable for my elderly mother as well. The meat, fish, and vegetables were all delicious. One slight downside was that the room was a traditional Japanese-style room with seating on the floor, which might feel a bit unfamiliar given modern lifestyles. There were no sofas, only floor chairs. On the other hand, the private open-air bath in our room was exceptional! It had an authentic design using rocks and exceeded expectations. The refrigerator in our room came stocked with complimentary beer and tea. Overall, it felt like a truly hospitable accommodation.

    A Ryokan That Brings Complete Satisfaction After a Long Time

    We chose this accommodation as our children have grown a bit, and we wanted a place where we could relax. The focus on cuisine was also very appealing for our food-loving family. Arrival → Check-in was smooth, and the welcome service of Japanese sweets and matcha tea helped relieve the fatigue from driving. Room → While some accommodations may appear clean at first glance but lack attention to detail, this place was perfect. Hygiene seemed to be a top priority, allowing us to stay with peace of mind. Library → The selection of books was excellent, and the free drinks made it a relaxing space. It provided an escape from daily life’s hustle and bustle, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Meals → Everything was incredibly delicious and satisfying. We might have been able to eat even more! The dishes were so good that they kept us wanting more. Our children were thrilled with their individual servings of grilled sweetfish (ayu), savoring them with delight. Baths → The quality of the hot spring water is excellent. Though compact in size, it wasn’t crowded, so we could fully enjoy it. Both the indoor bath in our room and the open-air bath were wonderful. However, the water pressure in our room’s indoor bath felt slightly low; meanwhile, the large public bath had perfect water pressure. Staff → From the hostess to all staff members, everyone provided warm hospitality without being overly formal. They treated our children exceptionally well too. We were deeply moved by their heartfelt service and kindness. We also appreciated receiving Shirakawa tea as a parting gift and thank you for promptly delivering forgotten items! Overall Impression → As this is a small-scale accommodation, there wasn’t any stress from large crowds or international tourism influxes; we achieved our goal of spending time leisurely here. We would love to visit again!

    It was the best Ryokan.

    We stayed here for our first family trip. As it was our first trip with a baby, we had many questions beforehand, but the staff responded kindly and eased all our worries, making us look forward to the stay even before arriving. During our stay, the wonderful hostess and staff warmly interacted with us, and even though our daughter had just started being shy around strangers, she was happy and smiling throughout. The room was very clean, the food was absolutely delicious, and since there was an onsen in the room, we were able to let our daughter experience her first onsen bath—making it a memorable family trip. It also happened to be our wedding anniversary; we were delighted by their kind words of celebration and having photos taken for us. The photo of the hostess holding our daughter is a cherished memory as well. We used to stay at another ryokan in Gero Onsen that didn’t allow children under 12 years old; this time we chose Suimeikan Suihoen for the first time—and now it’s become a place where we’d love to stay again when visiting Gero Onsen!     Accommodation with exceptional hospitality

    I made a Reservation for a 70th birthday celebration. At the time of the Reservation, I received a polite email mentioning that they could take a commemorative photo before the meal if we wished. On the day, they even prepared special attire for the 70th birthday celebration, which was an unexpected gesture and deeply moving. In addition to the commemorative photo, there were various surprise performances that left us truly touched. The meal was absolutely outstanding with no complaints whatsoever. It was delicious, and both the food and tableware were exquisite, providing both culinary and visual delight. The hostess's thoughtfulness was remarkable, and all staff members provided warm hospitality, making it an unforgettable 70th birthday celebration.

    Thank you for your hospitality. I had no complaints at all, and the Italian meals were very satisfying. The pudding dessert at the end was incredibly rich, and I would love to have it again. Next time I visit, I'll be torn between choosing Japanese cuisine or sticking with the excellent Italian dishes. When I went for a walk, it started raining heavily, and I went out without an umbrella. However, when I called for help, you kindly came to pick me up, which was truly appreciated. Thank you so much! The bath in the Room was also fantastic—I ended up using it multiple times. Recently, many places that attract foreign visitors have significantly increased their prices; however, this Ryokan offers great value for money. One thing that caught my attention was the continued display of COVID-19 precautionary signs—for example, asking guests not to talk inside elevators. Perhaps it's time to consider removing these? While being cautious is understandable, seeing these signs reminds me of how challenging those times were during COVID-19. In any case, this was a wonderful Japanese Ryokan experience. I'll definitely visit again!

    From the first parki...

    From the first parking lot to the last, the staff's hospitality was exceptional. If I have another opportunity to visit Gero Onsen, I would love to stay here again. The cuisine was meticulously prepared and delightful, especially the fish served with foam soy sauce and Hida beef, which were truly impressive. Even the final drink was enjoyable. Thank you very much!

    Accommodation with the finest hospitality.

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother and her friend's 88th birthday (for two guests). The hospitality and attentiveness of everyone, including the proprietress, were excellent. Both my mother and I were extremely satisfied. We look forward to visiting again for the 90th birthday celebration.

    I stayed in the Butterfly Room. It was the same room as last time, and I always use it with my wheelchair-bound mother, aunt, and daughter. We are very satisfied with the room, food, and staff. Thank you very much.
