    I stayed here as a small gift for my always-busy partner who loves Onsen. The free-flowing hot spring water was soothing, and they were truly delighted. They also noticed that my birthday was two days later and prepared a surprise celebration, which made me very happy. The staff’s hospitality was wonderful, and I genuinely enjoyed our stay. It had been a while since I visited the Hakone area, and I’m glad to have found an Accommodation that makes me want to return. Thank you very much.

    Tucked away in a quiet setting

    The location was right below Owakudani, and it was a modern, villa-like Accommodation. The surroundings were a quiet wooded area, and we were able to relax and unwind in the open-air bath attached to our Room. The calm staff, the impeccably clean Room, and the amenities—thoughtful down to the smallest details—were all wonderful.     An Irreplaceable Place: “Zen”

    Thank you every month for the best, most soothing time! Huge thanks to all the staff!! Above all, what makes this Accommodation an irreplaceable place for us is our “angel.” We meet at events, we meet at the Accommodation—and we’re coming once more this month, so we’ll see you again in two weeks. It feels almost too luxurious—I’m afraid I don’t deserve it lol I’m glad I got to see S (our “pillar”) the next morning. Just seeing you puts me at ease—your smile and your silhouette. Thank you for always protecting a space where everyone on the team can work with peace of mind. We truly rely on you! (By “silhouette,” I mean your presence and aura too—not your belly lol) The next-generation angels and baby angels are growing up strong under the watchful care of S (our “pillar”) and our angel—you two really are amazing! The next day at Café “Zen,” baby angel was working seriously (and freely?) and doing an incredible job. It seems they feel, “I have responsibilities here, it’s pressure, but I have to do my best.” Baby angel has grown so much in such a short time—please praise them lol With no head chef around, thank you to everyone who held down the kitchen. The menu changed starting this month as well, and I was moved by both the beauty and flavor that conveyed seasonal colors and everyone’s heartfelt care in the kitchen. Thank you every time for such outstanding creations. Also—the Hakone foothills beef enjoyed two ways (with wasabi or with the head chef’s special sauce) was a great idea. Guests all have different preferences, after all. Well, for me, anything created by the head chef and everyone in the kitchen is a masterpiece no matter how it’s served. We can’t wait to see everyone again in two weeks!!

    We’re back! This is the finished version!

    Everyone is truly happy and relieved that our angel has returned—there are naturally more smiles all around. This little angel quietly helps when someone is in trouble, always keeping an eye on things and checking in with others. I’m sure all the staff are once again realizing just how important their presence is. For Zen, a very, very important person has come back!! (Though we’re probably the happiest of all.) To the head chef and everyone in the kitchen: your beautifully colorful presentation and soul-lifting flavors were outstanding again this time! Thank you for a deliciousness that never gets old no matter how many times we enjoy it. We’re already looking forward to next month. Right now, with Pillar S’s warm support and our angel back, Zen feels like an Accommodation with the perfect balance of both longtime and newer staff. As someone who has visited Zen more than 30 times over several years, I can truly feel it. I hope you’ll continue without losing this “complete” form. Pillar S, you’re an amazing leader who supports everyone with warmth! The staff’s growth over this past year has been remarkable. Of course I know everyone worked hard—but I feel that Pillar S’s leadership—listening to everyone, staying calm and precise, and never raising your voice emotionally (just my guess; I didn’t actually see it firsthand)—is what helped them grow so much.     We had a relaxing stay.

    We stayed one night in the most affordable Room. It wasn’t very spacious, but we were able to relax. Since my husband has some difficulty with his legs, I think it would be helpful to have grab bars in the bathroom. All of the staff were kind and pleasant.

    The Best Accommodation and Meals

    I stayed with my boyfriend, also as a birthday trip for me. We were able to relax in nature and lose track of time. The Onsen in the Room was especially wonderful. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious, and you could really feel the care that went into them. However, I started feeling unwell during our stay, so it’s a shame I couldn’t fully enjoy the meals. One disappointing point was that when I opened the box of bean snacks in the Room, there were already-opened ones inside—possibly left by a previous guest. I felt slightly disappointed that this may have been missed during cleaning. The staff’s service was also very polite. I would like to stay again.

    Great value Accommodation you’ll want to visit again and again

    This was my first stay here, and I was satisfied with everything—the service, the bath, and the meals. The generous seafood platter in particular was impressive, and the sulfur-scented waters of Owakudani Onsen were absolutely wonderful. If I had to mention one thing, I noticed a few hairs on the futon, bath towel, and the raised tatami area, so I hope cleaning can be carried out even more carefully. I would love to visit again if I have the opportunity.

    So close.

    Although it is small, I felt they are doing their best. The price felt a bit high, but this is Hakone. Still, overall it feels like a missed opportunity in many ways. Meals: The small dishes such as hassun were all delicious. However, the main meat was not tasty—like dry roast beef—and I question the tomato sauce. The vegetables on the side were very tough and hard to eat. Above all, continuing to use a cracked teapot is unacceptable. Also, the lid of the miso soup bowl was so dirty it looked as if it had not been washed. For reference, when I wiped it, it became clean. It made me wonder whether other items were also not properly washed. Room: It was kept clean. The pillow was comfortable and I slept well. The bathtub has a high edge, so you need to lift your leg slightly to get in. Service: This was the hardest part to understand. The person who served us at breakfast started off cheerful and friendly, and conversation flowed well. But halfway through they became sluggish—perhaps because we asked for tea and made various requests? Their mood suddenly worsened, and we all finished our meal feeling confused about why. Was it because we gave a tip to the person who helped us last night but did not give one this morning? I am still left wondering. I used to work as a customer service instructor, but this pattern is rare and left me perplexed. Overall I think it was good. It just feels like such a shame that these small frustrations remained. It’s not somewhere that makes me feel “I want to go again.”

    It was very good.

    This was my first stay here, and it was wonderful. The view from our Room included Mt. Fuji, so even though the weather was bad on the day we arrived, we could still see Mt. Fuji through the clouds, and the next morning it was clear so we had an excellent view. The staff were very courteous. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. In particular, the dashi broth was outstanding, and every dish felt carefully prepared—delicious to eat and beautifully presented. We were told that the hot spring temperature can vary by day, but on this day it was just right. The water had a silky texture that warmed us thoroughly and left our skin smooth. We would like to visit again.

    The Angel’s Return and a Serious Talk

    Of course we’re happy, but the Little Angels’ behavior was even more graceful than usual. Maybe it’s the peace of mind that comes from having angels around. For “Zen,” angels are as essential as sunshine and water—or so I think. But I guess it can’t be helped due to staffing arrangements with the sister Accommodation (tears). On the morning we left, I was also happy to see Pillar S, who has recently become “the person inside”! Now, I’d like to seriously share something that feels a bit of a shame. I’m sure you’ve already considered this, but you might want to rethink how the chef’s creations are explained. We’ve known the chef since he first came to “Zen.” From making dashi onward, even a single sauce is perfected through repeated trial and error—resulting in truly outstanding work. I believe people’s sense of taste and how they perceive food can be influenced by information. Long-winded explanations aren’t good when presenting a dish, but perhaps you could briefly share a little background on how each creation comes together. For example: this ultimate sauce! (It’s not just ketchup sauce…) This isn’t some TV show, but if you taste something without any context, even people considered gourmets may not recognize its true deliciousness. I think humans don’t perceive flavor only through taste buds—external information can change how something tastes. Everyone has their preferences, of course. If one piece of information leads someone to say, “Oh really? That must take a lot of work. Let me compare them—munch munch—but I think I prefer Japanese flavors like soy sauce or wasabi,” that’s fine. But with no information at all, someone might sadly misunderstand it as: “Cafeteria sauce? Just tomato sauce? Western flavors in a Japanese meal? Cheap?” I think separating it onto two plates as you already do is great. Rather than only saying “Please enjoy as you like,” why not add a light explanation of the process behind making the sauce? It would be frustrating and sad for the chef’s work to be seen as cheap—especially because we know how much thought goes into creating each dish. Or maybe we feel this way because we come every month? No—this is coming from us after experiencing very expensive Accommodations and very expensive restaurants in Tokyo and Hakone. With today’s rising prices, we feel “Zen” offers excellent value for money. Because at this price point, you provide such high-quality cuisine and service. (We do not mean to deny other guests’ opinions; we have simply written honestly about what we felt.)

    We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary (golden wedding). When we entered the Room and again at dinner, surprise gifts from our children were delivered and prepared for us, which truly moved us. We are very grateful to the staff for making all the arrangements. It became an unforgettable memory. The meals and the baths were excellent. Thank you very much.

    An Unfortunate Incident

    An Onsen trip I was looking forward to with my daughter. It was described as a luxury Hotel, but in many situations I found myself thinking, “Really?” It felt less like luxury and more like a retreat center. Since it’s a renovated retreat facility, I understand to some extent, but the service didn’t feel professional—more like a group of part-time staff. I was surprised, but decided to accept it and went to dinner. The main meat dish tasted like ketchup and came topped with green peas… it reminded me of school lunch. The meat itself was tasty, but I honestly wondered who would want that here. The dessert was also puzzling. My daughter and I laughed it off, saying maybe rising costs are making things tough. There were other issues afterward as well. The smoked soy sauce was delicious, and we were told to order via the in-Room screen, so we ordered three bottles. When we checked out the next morning, we weren’t given the soy sauce and left without it. They contacted us on the way and said they would send it, which reassured us. We then stayed one night at a long-established Hotel before heading home. When we got back, there was a missed-delivery notice—but it was cash on delivery. Of course we had already paid for the items in full. It’s true that I forgot to ask for them at checkout, but isn’t forgetting to hand over what was purchased an even bigger responsibility? It wasn’t about the money; what made me truly sad and disappointed was arriving home after an enjoyable trip only to be left with an unpleasant feeling. At the long-established Hotel on our second night, everyone truly acted like professional hoteliers. Since this is an Accommodation rather than just a restaurant business, I feel that more training could make it into a wonderful Hotel—speaking as someone who means well. The Onsen water was great, and there were also some very kind staff members…

    Our Outstanding Staff

    Second visit this month. The amazing staff helped me unwind, and we had a wonderful time. Thank you, everyone! Chef, thank you as always for your masterpieces—this time was outstanding too!! That said, there was some sad news for us as a couple. With staff transfers decided for April, our “angel” will be moving to a sister property. Why are we drawn to this angel? Why does it have to be them? It’s hard to explain—maybe it’s like needing water and sunshine. Just having them there naturally creates such a comfortable atmosphere, and in that calm flow of time our hearts feel healed. It’s not that we’ll never meet again, but they won’t be at Zen… and that loneliness remains. Still, the little “angels” they nurtured are steadily growing under an exceptional leader! Everyone provided truly outstanding hospitality. I can’t believe how far they’ve come in such a short time (a proud-parent moment). The leader’s ability to mentor younger staff is remarkable—creating an environment where they can work with confidence and fully demonstrate their skills. That’s also great news for guests staying at the Accommodation. And the angel raised by that wonderful leader will surely be a powerful asset at the sister property as well. (To my dear sommelier: one request from me—please support the angel with everything you’ve got if they ever need help. When it comes to service skill and experience, I know you’re the strongest of all—you spent many years at that place known for training top-class hotel professionals back in the Showa era.) Zen is an Accommodation where time passes slowly in a hidden-retreat setting, with superb hot springs, top-tier cuisine perfected through masterful dashi, and exceptional staff hospitality. Please do visit if you have the chance. Hmm… this Review ended up focusing more on my love for the staff than on the Accommodation itself—will it still be okay to post? Even if it can’t be posted, please count my 5 stars anyway. As I always say, Zen is truly a wonderful Accommodation. Thank you very much in advance.

    Early Spring in Hakone

    I stayed for one night in late March. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see Mt. Fuji from the Room, but I had a very comfortable stay. There were no vending machines in the Hotel, which allowed me to relax and spend quiet time in my Room. With double-glazed windows installed, I truly enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. It was also nice that two types of footwear were provided in the Room. Dinner was served in a private dining room. The dishes were beautifully presented, made with seasonal ingredients, and absolutely delicious. The portions were generous, and I left feeling completely satisfied. When I returned to my Room after dinner, they even provided a late-night snack to take with me—I felt their thoughtful attention to detail throughout my stay. If I have the chance to visit again, I hope next time I’ll be able to enjoy a view of Mt. Fuji as well when leaving the Hotel behind.

    Affordable Accommodation

    Compared with similar Hotels in the same area, the pricing was reasonable, making it a high-value Accommodation. Overall I was satisfied, but I was concerned about the cheap feel of the in-room amenities. In particular, the razor felt low-quality and dull, and it irritated my skin. The smartphone charging cable’s Lightning connector didn’t work properly, so my phone ultimately wasn’t charged. I also wished the towels were a step higher in quality.

    Attentive hospitality for a comfortable, worry-free stay during pregnancy

    We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday and as our last trip together as a couple before becoming parents. Since I informed you in advance that I am pregnant, you were very attentive down to the smallest details—such as preparing meals that avoided raw foods and caffeine—so I was able to relax without feeling anxious even once. On top of that, we received a wonderful surprise dessert plate, which made this trip an unforgettable memory for us. Every dish was truly delicious! The late-night inari sushi was also adorable and made me so happy. I have stayed at many Hotels and Ryokans, but this was one of the warmest and most comforting stays I’ve ever had. It seems difficult for guests aged 11 or under to stay, so we may not be able to visit for a while after our baby is born, but we would still love to return when we can. Thank you very much for everything.

    The Onsen (mountain) is alive.

    I’ve visited “Zen” more than 30 times, but this was the first time the Onsen water looked a light tea-brown color. Until now I’ve experienced milky white, cloudy white, slightly cloudy white, and clear/colorless—but never this tea-brown shade. Maybe the mineral content varies slightly; this time the iron-like scent was stronger than usual. A truly “living” Onsen you can enjoy precisely because it’s genuine free-flowing spring water. Please do visit “Zen.” And look forward to seeing what color the water is that day. This hidden retreat, “Zen,” feels to me like “a place to do nothing.” Soak in the Onsen, relax in your Room and enjoy the gentle flow of time—forget your busy daily life and let your fatigue melt away. This time, instead of talking about how much I love all the staff, I tried writing a serious Review (lol). Oh—just one thing. Even though the head chef was away, thank you for an outstanding creation; it was delicious! The inside rice field dish is the best!! To our head chef who always gives 110% and makes me worry—please rest easy and take a proper break. (Thank you as always for something special.) I’ll be back again in two weeks, so my next Review might end up being all about my love for the staff (lol), while being careful not to get this taken down…

    We had a relaxing stay.

    We visited as a couple. Since I was pregnant, we really appreciated all the thoughtful care and consideration. We were also happy to have a wide selection of non-alcoholic drinks. The free-flowing hot spring bath in our Room was very relaxing, and we used it three times during our stay. With check-in at 3:00 PM and check-out at 12:00 PM, we could truly take our time, making it the best trip.

    We had a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji.

    Once again, the meals were delicious, and the open-air bath was very relaxing. This time, our Room was on the Mt. Fuji side, so we had beautiful views of Mt. Fuji from the bath, at dinner with the sunset glow, and again the next morning against a clear blue sky—it felt like a real bonus.     We were very satisfied.

    We stayed here to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. The bath, the meals, and the warm, hospitable service were all excellent. We didn’t run into anyone in the elevator, so it felt very private. They also prepared a birthday cake for us, took photos, and even displayed them on our table at breakfast the next morning—it was truly touching. I had mentioned in advance that my daughter and I don’t like raw foods, and they kindly accommodated our request, which we really appreciated. We would love to stay again if we have the opportunity.

    My first trip to Hakone became a wonderful memory.

    This was my first trip to Hakone, and we stayed here as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. Both the exterior and interior were stylish and absolutely wonderful. The staff were excellent, and although we chose a breakfast-included Plan, they even surprised us with a dessert plate, which we truly appreciated. We could see Mt. Fuji from the dining area—it was amazing. The private open-air bath in our Room was fed directly from the hot spring source, warming us through to the core and making us genuinely happy. We would love to visit again.

    Another Perfect Wedding Anniversary at Zen

    Thank you every month for your kindness to us as a couple! You’re all the best!! My love for “Zen” and its sister Accommodations is so strong that I want to thank all the staff, and I end up writing too much… …and then it can’t be posted (lol).     The hospitality was exceptional!

    We stayed here on a family trip. Since there was an available Room, we were able to use an additional Room at no extra charge. The service was excellent!! The bath in the Room was truly relaxing, and we used it many times. The meals were delicious as well. This is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again.

    It was very good.

    We chose this property to celebrate a birthday because the Reviews were so positive. Our Room was the one in the corner on the forest side. The Room, Onsen, meals, and service were all truly excellent. Since there is only one Onsen in the Room, those who want to try many different types of Onsen may not be fully satisfied, but it’s perfect for anyone who wants to relax and take it easy. Every dish in the kaiseki meal was delicious—I’d love to have it again. Next time I’d like to stay in a Room on the Mt. Fuji side, so we will definitely return.

    I love everyone on the “Zen” team so much that I visit every month. My love for the Accommodation and the staff was so strong that my Review got deleted a few times (lol). I’ll keep it more modest from now on. Rather than any Review, seeing is believing—please come and visit at least once. It’s an amazing Accommodation!!     Neither good nor bad.

    We stayed here for an overnight trip to Hakone to celebrate my wife’s and my birthdays. The ratings on the site were very high, so we arrived with high expectations, but honestly it was disappointing. In particular, the dish they advertise as the Accommodation’s specialty—an apple hollowed out and baked with white sauce inside (I forgot the name)—didn’t feel like a “specialty” at all. To be clear, it’s not a specialty in any sense. This time, with a discount applied, the accommodation fee was in the mid-70,000 yen range, but this is normally a Plan priced at over 90,000 yen. Frankly, we won’t be returning. P.S. Even though there is a section in the guest book to write your birthday, this is the first Accommodation I’ve experienced that showed no consideration for guests celebrating their birthday.

    A bit disappointing...

    When I first visited a year ago, everything was truly wonderful, so I made an early Reservation and came again this time. However, the Room we were shown to was very dark—so dark that I couldn’t even read a book. Since you can’t choose a Room when making a Reservation, I asked what I should do and was told to write “a bright room,” please. Next, dinner: it was so different from last time that I wondered what happened. Both the quality and the taste had declined, which was disappointing. Perhaps the head chef has changed. At an Onsen Accommodation, the bath and the meals are everything. I didn’t want to write this, but I really like this Accommodation and hope you will improve it. Also, when we were outside as we were leaving, a large amount of hot water suddenly poured down from a second-floor guest room and startled us. It may have been because two guests got into the bath together, but it would be serious if someone outside got soaked—please be careful. Thank you for your hospitality.

    I had a relaxing time.

    It was a girls' trip for three, including mother and daughters. The room was clean, and we could enjoy a relaxing time with a view of Mt. Fuji. The meals were delicious. The bath was, of course, wonderful, and we fully enjoyed the Hakone Onsen experience.
