Overall, it meets the requirements, but there are issues in the details.

    - Meals: Since meals are served in the Room, it is difficult to expect them to be piping hot, and depending on the dish, once it starts to cool it can be hard to eat. - Service: The attentiveness and consideration shown by the staff member in charge of our Room felt like the result of first-class training, and the greetings on arrival and departure were pleasant. I was also very happy that they washed my car. - Onsen: I used the large public bath, but the drainage was poor and a large amount of water pooled around my feet at the washing area, making my feet cold while washing—an awful experience. The indoor bath and open-air bath were good, but the drainage issue ruined it. - A towel used by a previous guest in the large public bath was left hanging dry on the inside of the bathroom door in the Room; this lack of checking during cleaning was an unpleasant issue. - Safe unusable: The safe has a battery compartment inside, but its cover was missing. I did not use it because if a battery came loose while storing items, it seemed possible that the safe door could lock. When I first tried to use it, a battery had already come loose; I put it back and checked operation, but without a cover I assumed that closing the door could cause a battery to come loose. Overall, we felt everything was very good, though there were a few small points that concerned us. We would like to visit again.

    Meals

Although it was advertised as charcoal-grilled, the key meat was piled on the grill, but the flavor was underwhelming and didn’t feel like a main ingredient. Even if the portion were smaller, it would be better to improve the quality and make it worthy of being the main dish. It was disappointing because the kaiseki cuisine, as always, was excellent and wonderful.

    Delighted by the Osechi cuisine

My husband had wanted to stay at Kadan for a long time, and we were able to book a room over the New Year holidays by joining the waitlist. There was so much we were looking forward to—the historic building, the Onsen, and the meals—but the dining experience was especially outstanding. Each dish was carefully prepared, and we could truly enjoy every single piece of vegetable. Since it was New Year’s, we were served osechi cuisine, and it was so delicious that I couldn’t help smiling at every bite. The in-room refrigerator items and amenities were also high quality, giving a real sense of luxury. What disappointed us was that there was no sound from the TV; even after asking the staff for help, it wasn’t resolved quickly and required several visits to the Room. Also, the bath in our Room had a leak, so unless we kept running hot water continuously, it would drain away more and more. If we didn’t refill it at a very fast rate, it became cold, which was unfortunate. The people were wonderful—greetings in passing and attentive service such as carefully delivering meals to our Room—so it was disappointing that the basic Facility conditions, especially comfort during our stay in the Room itself, were not as good as expected.

    We had a wonderful time.

On our previous stay, we regretted having to leave after just one night, and promised ourselves that next time we would stay for two nights. After many years, that wish finally came true, and we were able to enjoy a truly luxurious time. Both nights, the dinner and breakfast menus were different and absolutely wonderful. We would love to visit again in another season to enjoy the cuisine. Even our children—who usually don’t like meals at Hotels—kept saying how delicious everything was and were truly delighted.

    Heartwarming Hospitality

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. We have stayed at highly rated Ryokan before, but the attentive hospitality and excellent service here made for a wonderful stay. We would love to return again.

Packed with great features and very satisfying.

This was my first stay at the long-admired Gora Kadan. I was especially looking forward to the pool, fitness gym, and hot stone spa, and I was completely satisfied with every aspect of the stay—from the wide variety of beautifully portioned meals to the attentive service. For a luxury Accommodation of this caliber, I truly appreciated the generous touches: a private pool and hot stone spa, two yukata provided per person from the start, Fuji mineral water placed throughout the property, complimentary drinks in the refrigerator, and coffee served even with a Japanese breakfast. I also really enjoyed chatting with our attendant, making it an outstanding stay. Maintaining such a large Facility so beautifully while serving so many delicious dishes is truly impressive. The Facility is not new, but it is well equipped and kept very clean; details like heated floors in the washroom were especially satisfying—so I give it 5/5. I will definitely return.

    It was amazing!

Following our stay last October, we once again enjoyed the finest hospitality, cuisine, and baths! The baths were so blissful I almost wanted to shout “Heavenly!” like in an old Japanese folktale. As for the food, it’s beyond words—I already want to eat it again right now and could happily come back forever. What’s especially wonderful is that it’s not only dinner that’s exceptional; breakfast is just as outstanding. Writing this is making me hungry. We’ll definitely be back!

    The place felt nosta...

The place felt nostalgic with its traditional Japanese style, but about 90% of the guests are foreigners. It would be fine if everyone followed proper etiquette, but: They go into the public bath with bath towels, leave used towels tossed on chairs or on the floor, leave their shoes where they took them off, lie in the free post-bath lounge with their yukata legs spread wide open, walk down the hallway with their yukata wrapped the wrong way around, leave undressed items openly visible in baskets, for some reason enter the bath restroom as a pair, and even after the men’s and women’s baths were switched, hair tonic was still left in the women’s bath. I felt that for Japanese guests, it may not be worth the price.

    Gora Kadan – 37th Stay

This was my 37th stay at Gora Kadan. In total, I’ve spent over 9 million yen there (enough to buy a luxury car, haha). When I visited over New Year’s, despite the special holiday rates, there was an issue with the osechi in the jubako boxes and I filed a complaint with the Ryokan. During this February stay, they were very considerate in many ways—almost like making up for what happened at New Year’s. This is a wonderful Ryokan that sends mid-year and year-end gifts and responds with sincere care and thoughtfulness. This time, I received the bouquet shown in the photo. Routine service that’s done every day should be a given; I believe true value is determined by how well unexpected situations—things not covered by a manual—are handled. In that sense, Gora Kadan is just one step away. The plum blossoms near the open-air bath by my Room had started to bloom, and I was able to enjoy my usual blissful time soaking in the Onsen while watching Japanese white-eyes peck at camellias. Next month, I’ll be visiting Gora Kadan Fuji.

    For a family trip

This was one of the Ryokan I had long wanted to visit, and I was looking forward to a stay at a place with such tradition and prestige. The attendant who looked after us was very kind and willingly accommodated our requests, which we truly appreciated. On the other hand, the age of the property was noticeable. Although everything was thoroughly cleaned, there were spots where the floor felt uneven, and the table in front of the sofa seemed surprisingly old. Also, when I went to the bath in the morning and greeted a staff member who was replenishing towels with “Good morning,” I was ignored. In addition, there is an elevator near the area where meals are prepared, and we could clearly hear staff conversations from there, which was disappointing. As for other Facility aspects, we enjoyed a spacious bath area and a relaxing lounge with massage chairs. Since it was raining at check-out, they kindly drove us to Gora Station and even lent us an umbrella. We were also very happy to receive a Receipt for our gratuity as well as a small gift to take home. The meals overall featured seasonal ingredients with gentle flavors that felt wholesome. If anything, it would have been nice to have one hot breakfast item kept warm over solid fuel. The views from the garden and the front desk were wonderful. Overall there were some disappointing points, so I rated it 4 out of 5.

    The food is delicious.

This was my first stay at Gora Kadan. The cuisine was refined and delicious—both the presentation and the flavors were outstanding. It was a pity we didn’t have a Room with an open-air bath this time, but the cypress bath still felt like one when we opened the shoji screens and enjoyed the view. The large public bath also had excellent water. That said, I wish the lounge offered some simple baked sweets. The complimentary drinks were limited to only two options; it would be nice to have more choices such as hot and cold beverages and ice cream. As part of IKYU’s Diamond Member benefits, there was a stone sauna, and the private stone sauna was incredibly relaxing. Next time, I’d like to stay in a Room with an open-air bath.

    All good.

For the past 30 years, I have stayed at Onsen Ryokan more than 10 times a year. During my working years, it was difficult to stay on weekdays and I couldn’t secure a Reservation, but at last I was able to visit on a weekday and come to Gora Kadan for the first time. When choosing an Onsen Ryokan, I look for the atmosphere of the Accommodation, the quality of the hot spring water, the cuisine, and a high level of hospitality—and this stay was extremely satisfying. When reading Reviews, I sometimes see harsh comments; depending on someone’s expectations and an unfortunate incident by chance not aligning well, disappointing experiences can happen. Our stay this time was wonderful. We received service that conveyed the staff’s dedication and sincerity. While there is some aging of the Facility—as is natural for any Accommodation that isn’t newly built—it was not at a level that bothered us. Above all, the thorough cleanliness felt refreshing. We would definitely like to return.

The meals and service are excellent.

I made a Reservation because my mother wanted to stay here. The meals were delicious down to the smallest details, and since they were served in our Room, we could enjoy them without worry even with a small child. The staff were very considerate, preparing things in advance without us having to ask. If I have the chance, I would love to visit again.

The quality of the room attendants varies far too much!

On our previous visit to celebrate our wedding anniversary, the room attendant and all the staff showed such thoughtful care that we had a very pleasant stay, so we returned this time to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday. However, this time the room attendant was the worst we have ever experienced among many Ryokan of this class. The car Shuttle Service on our departure day was accepted and confirmed once, but it was suddenly canceled at breakfast on the morning of departure due to their own circumstances. There was almost no explanation of the dishes at either dinner or breakfast, and when there was an explanation, only two servings were set out and explained even though there were four of us; for the other two, the previous tableware was left as is and no food had been served. It also took an unusually long time for each next dish to be brought out—was there simply not enough staff, or was it poor organization? In addition, there were hardly any smiles or conversation, and everything from the attitude onward was extremely unpleasant. Last time we clearly felt a genuine spirit of hospitality, but this time we did not feel it at all. We had been looking forward for more than half a year to celebrating my wife’s 60th birthday together as a family, but only very unpleasant memories remain. If a Ryokan promotes “hospitality” on its website, it should be natural to properly train each room attendant before having them serve guests. A single room attendant determines guests’ impression of the Ryokan. In any case, I cannot help but feel strong anger that our 60th birthday celebration was ruined.

I was able to relax and unwind with my wife.

We were able to relax together as a couple, away from our busy daily routine, enjoying delicious food and the Onsen. The attentive care from the staff in charge was also very pleasant, making for an excellent stay.

Among the Relais & Châteaux properties, this was the one I found most disappointing.

I am a fan of Relais & Châteaux, and this was my third stay in Japan alone. I had also long wanted to stay at this Ryokan. However, this visit was extremely disappointing. Based on my experience staying at over 100 Onsen Ryokan across the whole country, I can honestly say it was among the lowest levels of satisfaction I have ever had. First, I was surprised by how outdated the in-Room equipment and fixtures were. At check-in, I was told that I had been upgraded to the VIP Annex, but perhaps due to the age of the building or because it was on an upper floor, the Room was extremely cold even with the heating set to maximum, and it was not comfortable. When I asked to borrow a heater, I was told many Rooms were cold and all heaters were already loaned out; instead, two hot-water bottles were provided. Possibly because of the low Room temperature, even the food served—including wagyu beef and rice—was cold, so we could not fully enjoy it. Because of the cold, we could not sleep well and asked to move to a first-floor Room. The temperature there was fine; however, we then encountered another issue: the water in our private open-air bath would not fill up completely. On a cold night we had to call staff again, and we were told it was due to insufficient checks during cleaning. There were also many concerns regarding service. The first staff member who assisted us (a non-Japanese staff member) did not provide adequate explanations in either Japanese or English, so information about the Facility and services did not come across clearly. There were also small mistakes such as being served an incorrect staple food at breakfast. It is completely natural—and understandable—that non-Japanese staff work here; however, I feel more thorough basic training and operational consistency are necessary. Precisely because there are many international guests, service quality should be maintained—this is what builds trust in Japanese Ryokan hospitality. Most importantly—and what felt least “Japanese” to me—was that at checkout there was not a single word of apology for these issues or for our unpleasant experience. This is an extremely rare response at an Onsen Ryokan in Japan.

    It was the best stay!

This was the best stay ever. The facilities include not only an Onsen but also a pool and private family baths, all available for free. There’s tea service in the salon after bathing and a bar open until 11 PM, offering the perfect blend of Hotel and Ryokan features! Many international guests were also staying here. The meals emphasize the quality of ingredients and broth, with light seasoning that makes them easy to enjoy. I even finished every bite of dessert. I would love to stay here again!

When you visit the enchanting Hakone Hanadan...

① Room Amenities: The historical charm and well-maintained garden are commendable, but the age of the property is evident. Please don't skimp on amenities! ② Customer Service: The approach towards inbound guests might come across as condescending at first glance... ③ Onsen & Bath: Simply outdated. At least make the in-room baths Onsen! A brand hotel in Miyanoshita offers a Western-style bathtub with 60°C natural hot spring water directly flowing. ④ Facility: While the weight of history and tradition is appreciated, the age cannot be overlooked. ⑤ Dining: For a high-end Japanese Ryokan representing Hakone, this level is expected. A brand hotel in Miyanoshita serves French cuisine, even their budget options show dedication to quality ingredients and recipes. ⑥ Overall Satisfaction: Hmm... not quite disappointing, but perhaps my admiration was misplaced...

    Thank you very much.

We stayed as a group of three, including my elderly mother and two sisters. The staff kindly provided a chair and table for my mother, who has difficulty walking, which was very helpful. It was our first time staying during the New Year holidays, and upon arrival, we were treated to soft Hanabira Mochi. The next morning, we enjoyed adorable and delicious Osechi dishes with Otoso. Before leaving, we had a memorable photo taken in front of the Kadomatsu decorations. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

    Year-End Gora Kadan Yūgao Accommodation

Stayed at Accommodation Yugao with a family of four. The view from the 5th floor was great, and the room was spacious and clean. The highlight was definitely the open-air hinoki bath. It had a left side for lying down and a right side for sitting, comfortably fitting two people—it felt amazing. The washing area even had floor heating. The Onsen in the large communal bath was also very clean, with water at just the right temperature—not too hot. The food was delicious, prepared by a chef from Kansai. The light dashi flavor brought out the natural taste of the ingredients beautifully. We enjoyed kaiseki cuisine featuring wagyu beef; there was so much wagyu that my sons were thrilled, though I couldn’t finish it all. This Ryokan seems to be designed for relaxing in your room rather than moving around much. While frequent visits by staff might be noticeable, having multiple rooms allowed us to move around during preparations, which worked well. Overall, we were very satisfied! My husband mentioned it would have been nice if there were complimentary drinks or light snacks available in a lounge or salon area. We realized after returning home that they even washed our car—such thoughtful service! We regret not being able to thank them properly. We created wonderful family memories over New Year’s here. Thank you so much!

    Traditional Hospitality

It was an accommodation I had admired since I was young. The signature connecting corridor and the old annex are well-preserved, exuding a dignified atmosphere. At the Pola Museum of Art, they not only answered my question about bears but also checked if it was open and prepared invitation tickets. They even stored my luggage and delivered it to the station after my visit to the museum. The meals, prepared by a chef from Kyoto, were lightly seasoned with no oily dishes, making them gentle on the stomach. The grilled sablefish I chose for breakfast was perfectly cooked. The open-air bath and the attentive care of the staff were delightful, truly embodying what one would expect from a long-established ryokan.

    The finest hospitality

We visited as a family of three daughters and our elderly mother for a girls' trip. From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell, everything was filled with hospitality. The staff member in charge was very kind and attentive, ensuring we could relax and enjoy our time at ease. We created so many wonderful memories and truly felt it was worth visiting. The Onsen was so pleasant that we wanted to bathe multiple times. Thank you very much, and we look forward to visiting again!

    Very satisfied.

A historic and tranquil Ryokan. Some parts of the building and Facility may feel slightly dated. Soaking in the Onsen while admiring the garden view was truly memorable.

    Excellent hospitality

I stayed for the first time with my daughter, and it was a highly satisfying stay with the room, meals, and bath all meeting our expectations. We also enjoyed the Diamond Member benefit of the stone sauna as well as the pool that everyone can reserve, making it a fulfilling experience! After check-out, we were grateful to be provided shuttle service to nearby Gora Park. Thank you very much. We would love to visit again for a special occasion in the future. However, we have two requests: 1) The faucet handle at the sink was stiff and difficult to use each time. 2) It would be helpful if there were samue outfits available in addition to yukata, perhaps considering international guests. Thank you again for such a wonderful stay!

    Truly a paradise!

A Ryokan with a history of 77 years, originally renovated from the summer residence of the Imperial family in 1948. Located on the site of the former Kan'in-no-miya villa. One highlight is a 120-meter-long glass corridor designed by Takeo Chikuyama, extending straight from the lobby to an observation platform. The high ceilings and glossy black tiled floors create an elegant atmosphere rarely seen elsewhere. The glass windows on both sides offer seasonal views that change throughout the year, requiring meticulous maintenance. Open design elements allow guests to feel natural air while walking through. In the soothing steam of Onsen, gaze at green leaves or red maple trees and let your year's fatigue melt away. The former Kan'in-no-miya villa exudes European charm with its two-story structure now serving as a Kaiseki restaurant. Note that the sushi restaurant originating from Ginza is currently closed. The architecture features unique shapes like octagonal elevator entrances, adding interest for observant guests. Even the pool reflects Japanese aesthetics—elegant and seamlessly blending with nature. Inside are spacious areas showcasing meticulously maintained Zen gardens alongside breathtaking views of Gora's natural beauty. Occasionally, you can hear distant railway sounds adding to its serene ambiance. An ideal Onsen Ryokan combines excellent natural hot springs with attentive hospitality and respect for history and tradition. Unique designs, seasonal gourmet cuisine made from fresh ingredients, distinctive cultural or natural scenery, along with modern facilities make it truly flawless. A subjective measure might be whether you can still vividly recall your stay years later—the details that linger in memory long after leaving this special place—a sentiment perhaps uniquely valued by Japanese culture.

It was truly a pleasant and comfortable two days.

I have always wanted to stay at Gora Kadan. Here is a summary of my experience: - Stone Sauna After check-in, I first enjoyed the stone sauna (about 1 hour) and then proceeded to the large public bath. I felt lighter and truly refreshed. Unlike a regular sauna, the stone sauna operates at a lower temperature, but over time, sweat began to flow profusely, and I could feel its detoxifying effects. - Meals I reserved kaiseki cuisine. The dishes were prepared with natural broth flavors and were absolutely delicious. The timing of serving each dish was perfect, and for once, I finished everything on my plate. My compliments to the head chef for their exceptional skills! - Hospitality The level of hospitality here felt extraordinary compared to other ryokans. I deeply respect the hard work and dedication of all staff members. After checking out, we were kindly driven to Gora Station in a Mercedes-Benz car—thank you so much! I look forward to making another reservation next year!

Thank you for the wonderful time.

I previously stayed with my family and had such a wonderful experience that this time I returned with my mother. Just like before, the hospitality was exceptional, and the attendant who assisted us was very knowledgeable, making our stay truly enjoyable. During our stay, the shuttle service was provided multiple times, which was incredibly helpful. At the large public bath, a staff member kindly informed us at the entrance that no one else was currently using it, allowing us to enjoy a private bath—an unforgettable experience. The room's private bath was also excellent and included a steam sauna; we enjoyed bathing multiple times during our stay. As many others have mentioned, the meals were absolutely delicious and left us completely satisfied. If visiting Hakone again, I would definitely choose Gora Kadan once more. Thank you to all of the staff for making this trip so special and memorable. We are deeply grateful for your outstanding service and for providing such an extraordinary experience!

    The meals are excellent.

The service provided by the staff and the room attendants, as well as the cuisine, was excellent. However, the Room seemed old with scratches and dents on pillars and woodwork, peeling walls, and black tape near the ceiling vent coming off. It was disappointing. Additionally, mold was noticeable on part of the wall in the large public bath.
