The washroom facilities were not properly maintained. There was standing water around the faucet. The tissues at the sink were not replenished. A tissue case had been left by the doorway, but it was not refilled. Given the relatively high price, I expected a more comfortable stay. Disappointing.

We were very satisfied with the hospitality, the meals, and the open-air bath. Thank you for taking such good care of us. If I may mention one thing, the scent of the shampoo, conditioner, and body soap felt rather masculine. We would be happy if you could provide a fragrance that women prefer. In addition, it would have been nice if hair cream had been available as well.

We truly enjoyed a relaxing stay.

My mother and I stayed for one night in August 2026. After we arrived, we were shown to the larger Room. We truly appreciated this unexpected kindness. The garden was beautifully maintained, and we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing time there. Every dish was delicious, and the portions were just right—not too much. The cuisine was classic and seasonal. After the bath, we went to the lounge, where there was a wonderful selection of art books and magazines, and the complimentary drinks were excellent. The mountain views and garden from there were so beautiful that they made us forget our everyday fatigue. The service felt just right—neither too close nor too distant. Since it was drizzling the next day, we were also grateful for the service of being driven to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. One suggestion: it would be even better if the labels for the shampoo and conditioner in the bath area were easier to understand (other older guests also seemed confused). I would love to visit your new Accommodation near Mt. Fuji as well. Thank you very much.

    Everything was first-class.

This was my first time staying here. While modern Ryokan are becoming more common these days, I was very satisfied and felt truly relaxed thanks to the traditional, charming Room and the attentive service. The meals were also served in the Room in a classic Ryokan style, allowing me to take my time and enjoy them. The large public bath was spacious, and the open-air bath was excellent as well. There were many guests from Europe and North America. I would definitely like to stay again.

So it’s mainly for international guests now… That’s disappointing.

I have stayed here multiple times. I’m writing this Review because there were a few disappointing points in terms of service. When we arrived and pulled up to the drop-off area, no one was there… The dinner dishes were not cleared for quite a while… (I called about 30 minutes after finishing to request it). For the stone sauna, I would have liked some guidance rather than just being handed the key… They are small things, but it didn’t feel very attentive or considerate (I had hoped the staff would be more proactive). Has the focus shifted mainly to international guests…? That said, there was also something I truly appreciated. Although checkout was very busy, they arranged a ride for us at short notice and handled it pleasantly, which helped us a lot. Thank you to the driver!

    The service was not acceptable.

Service deserves not even one star—minus five. The attendant was completely inattentive. When I received the soy sauce dispenser, it didn’t even contain soy sauce. When a woman who seemed to be the proprietress escorted us and we got into the elevator, I sneezed and she looked at me with contempt, as if I were something filthy. It was extremely unpleasant. The only good thing was the Onsen. By chance, I had the large public bath all to myself, and it was spacious. My family said one star would be enough, though. In any case, this is the first time I’ve ever had such an unpleasant experience at an Onsen Ryokan that has a five-star rating on Google. Have they become arrogant because celebrities use it?

    Meals

The atmosphere and the staff’s hospitality were both very satisfying. However, I feel the dinner has been declining in quality year by year—items like the sashimi and grilled fish seem to have gotten worse. On my last visit, the menu listed salt-grilled ayu, which I was looking forward to, but it tasted more like smoked fish; it was the worst ayu I’ve had here. Is it really not possible to serve proper ayu at this time of year?

Both breakfast and dinner were very delicious, and the portions were just right. The staff were friendly, and the large public bath was clean. I’m glad I was able to take photos of the famous glass-walled corridor as well. Thanks to the IKYU special offer, I also enjoyed the hot stone sauna. Although the Room felt a bit dated, overall it was a satisfying stay.

I’ve always wanted to stay at a Relais & Châteaux property.

Unless you stay at a truly top-class Accommodation, you can’t really compare or use it as a benchmark afterward. In that sense as well, I’m genuinely glad I had the chance to visit the long-admired Gora Kadan. Everything—from the furnishings and refined atmosphere to the comfortable sense of distance with the staff—felt just right. Needless to say, each dish at dinner was outstanding… You can feel the dedication in every course, almost to an overwhelming degree. This Accommodation made it clear that it’s a special place—one where you live your everyday life as usual, and then come here for an exceptional stay.

It was a truly memorable stay.

From the warm welcome on arrival to the heartfelt farewell, we enjoyed consistently kind and comfortable hospitality, allowing me to spend precious, unhurried time with my two daughters. I would like to express my sincere gratitude, especially to the male staff member who took care of us. Though he was still young, his calm presence, graceful manners, and attentive consideration in every detail were outstanding, making our stay even more memorable and truly unforgettable. What impressed me most was that the towels in the washroom had been replaced with fresh ones on the morning of checkout. I have stayed at many Hotels and Ryokans over the years, but this was the first time I experienced such thoughtful care. It was a deeply memorable moment that clearly conveyed genuine consideration for guests. The Tanabata event on Saturday was also wonderful. A staff member in hakama served champagne, creating a beautiful experience filled with Japan’s seasonal charm and atmosphere. My daughter, who has lived abroad for many years, was especially delighted and it became a cherished memory for her. When I mentioned after checkout that we planned to visit the Okada Museum of Art, you immediately prepared a brochure for us—your natural warmth and thoughtfulness continued until the very end. Each dish of our meal was carefully prepared and delicious, and we were able to enjoy everything at a relaxed pace. This stay also served as a celebration for my daughter; thank you sincerely for your kindness as well. Since we stayed only one night this time, my only regret is that I did not have enough time to browse books leisurely in the library within the Accommodation. Next time, I hope to fully enjoy not only your facilities but also the gentle flow of time throughout your Accommodation itself.

    I was able to relax.

I visited alone during Golden Week. I had been wanting to go for a long time, and since there was availability, I made a Reservation right away. When I arrived at Gora Station, it started to drizzle. After I contacted the property, they promptly came to pick me up by car—very helpful. The property was quiet, and I hardly ran into other guests. At check-in, they explained the Diamond benefits and I made a Reservation for the hot stone spa. The in-Room amenities and bathroom facilities were very comfortable. I enjoyed the private open-air bath in my Room several times. Dinner was a seasonal kaiseki course with a wonderful sense of the season. If anything, it would have been nice to have drink pairings, though that may be difficult since meals are served in-room. My hot stone spa session was in the last time slot the next day, and it left me feeling very refreshed. The pickled plum served at breakfast was so good that I bought some as a souvenir. The Shine Muscat dried fruit served with tea was also delicious. I had a relaxing and comfortable stay on my own, and I would love to visit again.

We enjoyed the Onsen and kaiseki cuisine.

Despite concerns about rain, we arrived without getting wet. I was able to see the famous long corridor for the first time and was truly impressed. From the Room, we could see a magnificent garden, which felt very calming. I imagined it must be even more beautiful during the autumn foliage season. As for the Onsen, we enjoyed the large public bath, open-air bath, private bath, and the in-room Onsen. My daughter also had an esthetic treatment and was amazed by her first hot stone spa experience. The cuisine was kaiseki with many carefully prepared dishes. The snow crab dumpling soup, salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, and beef tenderloin were especially memorable. Unfortunately it rained on our departure day, but we were kindly driven to Gora Station so we didn’t get wet. By the time we reached Hakone-Yumoto, it had stopped raining. We would love to stay again if we have another opportunity. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Experience true Japanese hospitality.

Your experience may vary depending on the staff member in charge of your Room. Some foreign employees have difficulty communicating in Japanese. I happened to be assisted by a fun, experienced Japanese staff member. Also, the service is very attentive (amenities are frequently replaced and replenished when you step out of the Room, and they will escort you wherever you need to go). If that level of attention isn’t for you, it may be better to choose a more hands-off Hotel. For me, it was the best hospitality. I was happy that ink, an inkstone, and brushes were provided in the Room. There are quite a few steps inside the property when moving around. The large public bath was crowded and noisy, so I spent my time in the open-air bath in my Room instead. Because it was pouring rain, I wished there had been a large roof over the drop-off area for cars.

    Rainy Accommodation

Even during two typhoons, we were able to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. The semi-open-air bath kept us dry from the rain, and we enjoyed the rain and mist; only at night did the rain stop, and the moon was beautiful. In the large public bath, the open-air bath straight ahead was wonderful—like a painting. The in-room meal was a bit tough because it wasn’t served at a table. I wonder if they could provide a table if requested?

    A bit disappointing.

This was my second visit to Gora Kadan in Hakone. (I also stayed at Kadan Fuji.) On my first stay, I was impressed by everything—the Room, the Facility, the baths, the hospitality, and the cuisine—and I hoped to return someday. I finally came back after five years. This time I stayed in the “Ajisai” Room. However, the tatami dining room where meals are served and the bedroom are not connected internally; to move between them you must either step out onto the terrace in sandals to reach the adjacent room or go out into the corridor and enter through a separate door. It was a bit inconvenient. The Room description on IKYU made it difficult to understand this layout, so I mistakenly assumed it was a single connected Room. Had I known, I would have chosen a different Room. I felt this could have been explained more clearly. I have stayed at many high-end Accommodations like this one, but this was my first time at an Accommodation that did not offer a welcome drink, which surprised me. I arrived with time before check-in and was shown to the lounge, so I assumed a welcome drink would be provided—but everything was clearly charged. After finally checking in and entering the Room, it was disappointing to find that the bedroom and tatami room were separate as described above. Tea and sweets were served, but there was a long strand of hair on the table. There was also hair inside the amenity box. Leaving hair behind during cleaning is unacceptable. After breakfast, although we wanted to get ready quickly for an 11:00 check-out, dessert fruit took quite some time to arrive even after we had finished eating—so we had to rush our departure preparations. Just after 11:00, staff appeared as if waiting right outside our door; it felt like we were being hurried out. Because my first stay left such a strong impression, I visited again with high expectations—but unfortunately this time it was disappointing. For reference, Kadan Fuji was excellent.

    The hospitality was truly wonderful.

Thank you very much for your gracious hospitality. You even prepared unexpected services, and thanks to you I was able to spend an irreplaceable time that truly soothed both body and mind. From the comfortable Shuttle Service in a fine vehicle, the refined yet perfectly balanced attentiveness, the beautiful sukiya-style architecture, and the furnishings that adorn the property, to the warm meals enjoyed at leisure in the Room and the private indoor bath—everything was exceptional. Even coffee savored while listening to jazz in the lounge was wonderful; it was a flawless Accommodation in every respect. What impressed me most was that even the tableware for in-Room dining had been warmed. I could enjoy each dish deliciously while it remained hot until the very end, and I was deeply moved by such thoughtful care. The private indoor bath in the Room was also exquisitely designed to offer a beautiful view of the scenery outside, allowing me to fully enjoy a truly luxurious time. If I may share just one request: I felt that if the hair iron were a ReFa product, it might be easier to use and less likely to cause burns. I would love to visit again for some rest and recuperation. Thank you again for such a wonderful stay.

We truly felt your warm hospitality.

I stayed in May 2026. During my stay, I accidentally left an item in a locker by the pool. I only realized it 10 days after checking out, but I contacted Gora Kadan just in case. They had kept it safe, and I was able to get it back. What impressed me most was the pleasant response from the call center, the quick confirmation from the front desk staff that same day that my item had been found and stored, and their prompt arrangement for courier delivery—so it arrived the very next day. I was also moved by how carefully it was packaged. These days, many Hotels and Ryokan look luxurious on the surface with expensive facilities and furnishings, yet staff service can be disappointing. At Gora Kadan, however, I was truly touched by the hospitality of everyone there and their genuine care for guests. Thank you very much. I would love to stay again.

I felt that if you stay here, choosing the newly built annex might be the only way to be satisfied. The standard Room was so inconvenient around the sink area, and the handle looked so dirty that I almost gave it just one star (laughs). There wasn’t even an espresso machine in the Room. The meals lacked creativity and were average. Breakfast reminded me of an old-fashioned Onsen Ryokan from long ago. The service was good, but I got the impression there may be services you can’t receive unless you already know about them. I had wanted to stay here once and had high expectations, but it ended up being disappointing. In the end, I decided to accept it as paying for the Gora Kadan brand and inbound pricing.

Upon arrival, I went to the indoor bath to take some photos and was surprised to find a razor cap on the floor. The table on the veranda also had food crumbs on it, so I wiped down the table and floor myself after checking in. Considering the price was quite high, I wondered about the level of service.\n\nThe bath was great, and the food was very delicious.

    Far below expectations—deeply disappointing.

My spouse and I travel together 2–3 times a month, staying at well-known Ryokan and Hotels around Japan. Based on the high Review ratings and premium pricing, we assumed this would be one of Hakone’s leading luxury Ryokan, so this was our first stay. However, perhaps because our expectations were high, we left with a level of disappointment we have never experienced before. Of course, preferences vary from person to person; these are simply our honest impressions as guests who place particular importance on the Onsen and meals. The most disappointing points were as follows: ① The management and operation of the large public bath is not being handled properly. ・Most guests appeared to be from Western countries, but bathing manners were very poor. Many entered the bath wearing a bath towel and without rinsing their bodies first. ・In the open-air bath, countless oily residues and debris were floating on the surface, which was unpleasant. Fallen leaves or insects can feel atmospheric, but this was the first time we have encountered water this dirty. It is hard to imagine unless cleaning is being neglected or there is an issue with the circulation/filtration system. ・The sauna was far too hot; although I usually stay in for 10 minutes, even 2 minutes was my limit. It felt like my skin would burn before I could even start sweating. There was no temperature display either, which makes me seriously question whether it is being managed appropriately. ・The women’s open-air bath seemed similar. In addition, the mist sauna was dark and cramped, and the bench felt gritty with countless sand-like particles—so unpleasant that it could not be used. The next morning I checked myself; simply rinsing it with water improved it, so I can only conclude that cleaning was insufficient. ② The food is not bad, but it fell short of expectations ・There was little sense of creativity or seasonality from the chef, and even the dashi—fundamental to Japanese cuisine—lacked depth ・There were many dishes, but rather than kaiseki it felt like an ordinary set meal ・For the first time in my life, tuna sashimi was served with packaging paper stuck to it The proprietress did come to offer a polite apology; however, it only confirmed how low the kitchen standards are, leaving me more resigned than angry ・Even at around JPY 40,000–50,000 per person per night (approx.), there are plenty of other Accommodations that offer far better food ③ We could hardly feel any history or legacy of a former imperial family residence; only outdated facilities stood out ・Perhaps we cannot complain since we booked an inexpensive Room, but both toilet flushing and washlet functions were unreliable, and there was thick dust behind the TV Registering with Relais & Châteaux may have helped appeal to Western guests. However if this is seen as “the essence” of Japanese culture, then harsh as it may sound, I found this Accommodation disappointing—and frankly embarrassing.

    Impressive.

We chose this place for my husband’s birthday trip, and it was perfect for a relaxing stay-in getaway. Every meal was delicious, and since we couldn’t use the public bath, we were very happy that we could have Onsen water in our Room bath. We’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

Thank you for your warm hospitality!

Needless to say, the Onsen in our Room was wonderful, and the garden view enjoyed while soaking was so captivating that even hours weren’t enough. The kaiseki dinner on the first night and the sushi on the second night were both breathtakingly delicious, leaving us truly blissful. Above all, we were most grateful for Gora Kadan’s “delicate and beautiful” service—the very reason it is praised as a top-class ryokan.

    クララシッポ

Overall, it meets the requirements, but there are issues in the details.

    - Meals: Since meals are served in the Room, it is difficult to expect them to be piping hot, and depending on the dish, once it starts to cool it can be hard to eat. - Service: The attentiveness and consideration shown by the staff member in charge of our Room felt like the result of first-class training, and the greetings on arrival and departure were pleasant. I was also very happy that they washed my car. - Onsen: I used the large public bath, but the drainage was poor and a large amount of water pooled around my feet at the washing area, making my feet cold while washing—an awful experience. The indoor bath and open-air bath were good, but the drainage issue ruined it. - A towel used by a previous guest in the large public bath was left hanging dry on the inside of the bathroom door in the Room; this lack of checking during cleaning was an unpleasant issue. - Safe unusable: The safe has a battery compartment inside, but its cover was missing. I did not use it because if a battery came loose while storing items, it seemed possible that the safe door could lock. When I first tried to use it, a battery had already come loose; I put it back and checked operation, but without a cover I assumed that closing the door could cause a battery to come loose. Overall, we felt everything was very good, though there were a few small points that concerned us. We would like to visit again.

    Meals

Although it was advertised as charcoal-grilled, the key meat was piled on the grill, but the flavor was underwhelming and didn’t feel like a main ingredient. Even if the portion were smaller, it would be better to improve the quality and make it worthy of being the main dish. It was disappointing because the kaiseki cuisine, as always, was excellent and wonderful.

    Delighted by the Osechi cuisine

My husband had wanted to stay at Kadan for a long time, and we were able to book a room over the New Year holidays by joining the waitlist. There was so much we were looking forward to—the historic building, the Onsen, and the meals—but the dining experience was especially outstanding. Each dish was carefully prepared, and we could truly enjoy every single piece of vegetable. Since it was New Year’s, we were served osechi cuisine, and it was so delicious that I couldn’t help smiling at every bite. The in-room refrigerator items and amenities were also high quality, giving a real sense of luxury. What disappointed us was that there was no sound from the TV; even after asking the staff for help, it wasn’t resolved quickly and required several visits to the Room. Also, the bath in our Room had a leak, so unless we kept running hot water continuously, it would drain away more and more. If we didn’t refill it at a very fast rate, it became cold, which was unfortunate. The people were wonderful—greetings in passing and attentive service such as carefully delivering meals to our Room—so it was disappointing that the basic Facility conditions, especially comfort during our stay in the Room itself, were not as good as expected.

    We had a wonderful time.

On our previous stay, we regretted having to leave after just one night, and promised ourselves that next time we would stay for two nights. After many years, that wish finally came true, and we were able to enjoy a truly luxurious time. Both nights, the dinner and breakfast menus were different and absolutely wonderful. We would love to visit again in another season to enjoy the cuisine. Even our children—who usually don’t like meals at Hotels—kept saying how delicious everything was and were truly delighted.
