    The atmosphere was great.

The atmosphere of the Room and Facility, as well as the sound of bell crickets in the hallway, was wonderful. The meals were all carefully crafted and everything was delicious. As for service, the experienced staff were excellent. I often stay at Accommodations of various price ranges, and for the price it felt fairly average, but considering it as paying for the cuisine, it felt reasonable. After using the bath, something like an oily stain got on my nails—possibly from residue on the tiles—but a staff member handled it politely and thoroughly, which I appreciated.

    Summer Vacation Trip 2026

Thank you very much for taking care of us during our stay. We loved the atmosphere of the Ryokan and the feel of the Room—it was exactly to our taste and wonderful. The meals also featured seasonal ingredients, and we were very satisfied. All of the staff were very courteous, and since it was our child’s birthday, they even sang for us, which made them very happy.

    This is a wonderful accommodation.

It was a wonderful Accommodation with a beautiful garden. The warm hospitality, delicious dishes featuring Fukui ingredients, and the Onsen were all outstanding. From the Room window, we could see the town of Awara and the sunrise. My family and I are already talking about coming back again next year.

I felt that labeling it as “Casual” was appropriate.

I booked and stayed in a renovated Room listed on IKYU. 【Room & Facilities】 Room layout: The Room appears to be a renovation combining two older guest rooms. The bedroom and living area are rigidly separated, making the layout feel less spacious than expected. Toilet: The space was extremely tight, and because the door opens inward, I had to squeeze in while brushing against the toilet seat. It was very unpleasant to use during my stay. Bathroom & amenities: The in-room bath looked like a typical Japanese home bathroom from decades ago. The towels provided were unusually thin—thinner than anything I have seen before—and overall, including the amenities, everything felt cheap. Bedding: Both the futon and mattress were quite thin, making it hard to call it a comfortable sleeping setup. In the photo, the white item on top of the mat is the mattress. 【Stay environment】 Perhaps because my stay coincided with a large group banquet (like a company trip), the building and common areas were very noisy, and I could not relax. I had expected a quiet stay, so this was disappointing. 【Other】 It was stated that items in the refrigerator could be consumed freely, but it was empty. 【Summary】 For an Accommodation listed on IKYU, I felt there was a significant gap in terms of Facilities and service. To help guests set appropriate expectations in advance, it would be considerate to label it under categories such as “casual” on the website. Regrettably, I will not return.

    The Room was spaciou...

The Room was spacious, and we thoroughly enjoyed the large public bath. Each dish was served in a small portion, making it just the right amount to finish everything. Thank you as well for your thoughtful consideration after I mentioned my protein restriction. However, I was a little disappointed that the shabu-shabu meat at dinner and the grilled fish at breakfast—items I had asked to be served as-is—were changed to vegetables, so I shared some from others. Overall, it was very good.

We stayed here for my mother’s 85th birthday trip.

We were extremely satisfied. My mother, who will soon be 85, was so moved that she excitedly expressed her gratitude over and over to the staff in charge of our meals and the staff in charge of our Room, and I feel we may have caused some trouble. Thank you for responding kindly without showing any displeasure; I truly appreciate that as well. These days, many Accommodations are lively with inbound travelers and family groups, so there are fewer places where an elderly mother and daughter can relax quietly together. This Accommodation was a real help for us. Thank you very much.

The food was outstanding—absolutely the best!

The food was simply outstanding—truly the best. Both dinner and breakfast were delightful menus that reflected the chef’s passion and creativity, and every dish was exquisite. It was the best Ryokan I have ever stayed at. It is also a wonderful memory that the chef came to greet us in person and we had a chance to chat. In addition, the warm hospitality of the proprietress was exceptional, and all of the staff were pleasant and attentive. I felt refreshed both physically and mentally, and enjoyed a truly comfortable stay. I would definitely like to visit again.

My stay was very comfortable from check-in to check-out. The Onsen temperature was just right, and the meals were not only delicious and beautifully presented, but I also appreciated the thoughtful accommodation of ingredients I don’t eat.

    The Best Dinner Meeting

We were completely satisfied with this Accommodation in every way: a warm welcome, a wide variety of delicious kaiseki cuisine, the Onsen, and spacious Rooms. It was our first time in Awara Onsen, and we stayed as a group of 10; they asked us about various details even before our stay, and we were able to enjoy our time smoothly and pleasantly. As the organizer, I’m relieved that we chose Haiya. We also appreciated the young proprietress’s OMOTENASHI hospitality, and the attendants were wonderful as well. Thank you very much.

Overall, it’s not bad, but there are issues in the details.

The staff service left a very positive impression and seemed well trained. However, it was disappointing that the previous guest’s trash had not been removed from the Room bin, and that all drinks ordered with the meal were charged at double the quantity. As for the meals, they were lightly seasoned and tasty, but being vegetable-focused, they felt lacking in protein and were a bit less satisfying overall. The breakfast miso soup was clam soup, but I was surprised to find large pieces of cabbage—including the core—inside. This may come down to personal preference, but since the solid fuel heat source did not bring it to a full boil, I wondered whether it was appropriate to eat hard, raw cabbage.

    A Historic and Charming Accommodation

This was an Accommodation I had long wanted to stay at, and the quality fully lived up to my expectations. With its stately entrance that stands apart from nearby properties, the warm hospitality of all the staff, and the gentle natural hot spring water on my skin, I was able to relax at a leisurely pace. The meals featured quintessential Fukui ingredients beautifully presented, which I thoroughly enjoyed alongside dry local sake. The local specialty sweet recommended as a souvenir, “Yudama,” had a flavor that truly surprised me and became a wonderful memory of my trip.

We stayed for one night during Golden Week. Although the Accommodation seemed nearly fully booked, it never felt crowded, and thanks to the staff’s warm hospitality we were able to relax and enjoy our time. The Room was very spacious—more than enough for our family of five. We would love to visit again in the winter season!

Thank you for your thoughtful hospitality.

Thank you very much for all your kindness. I had to leave very early in the morning and wouldn’t make it in time for breakfast, so I was ready to give up, but you kindly prepared a boxed meal for me. The rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves and the many side dishes were delicious. The dinner—especially the fish cake and sashimi—was excellent, and even though I was full, I still enjoyed the seasonal dessert as if it were a separate stomach. My mother requested an aroma massage, and the therapist was extremely attentive, carefully working on the areas that hurt with genuine care. We are truly grateful—please pass along our thanks. The Onsen water quality was also wonderful; I was surprised that my skin looked brighter for several days afterward. Thank you again.

Tojinbo Cliffs, Eiheiji Temple, and the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

They served each of us crab, which made me very happy! It was a bit embarrassing to walk around in a bare-faced yukata after a bath among the glamorous guests from the wedding. Since the step near the floor of the open-air bath is a little deep, please be careful. In any case, all the staff were cheerful and kind, and I was very satisfied!

    Enjoy Crab

I chose this place because I wanted to eat crab, and I was so happy to fully enjoy delicious crab—crab sashimi, steamed crab, grilled crab, and a crab hot pot. The Room was more spacious than I expected, and all the staff were polite and pleasant, so I had a very comfortable stay. It was disappointing that there were no bath towels even though the Room had a bath, but everything else was excellent. Thank you very much.

It was my first time staying here.

It was a wonderful trip. The building was very clean and well maintained, and the garden view from the lobby was beautiful. The Accommodation was quiet, making it perfect for a relaxing stay. The meals were also excellent—especially the crab and fish—and we were very satisfied. One disappointing point: the drinking water in the Room smelled very bad... I’m not sure whether it was the water itself or the kettle, but it had a strong odor and that was unfortunate. It made it difficult when taking medicine. Other than that, it was a great, quiet Accommodation with polite staff. Next time, I’d like to try staying in a different Room.

    The hospitality was heartfelt.

We thoroughly enjoyed the crab-focused cuisine. Having one whole crab per person was pure bliss. If requested, the staff skillfully peeled it for us, allowing us to relax, chat, and enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace. The Room and bath were both spacious, clean, and very comfortable. We stay at Onsen Accommodations about once a month, and this Accommodation left a lasting impression with its warm hospitality. Each staff member was friendly yet professional, which we truly appreciated. It became a memorable trip. However, I’m sorry to say that the open-air bath was not very hot, which was a bit disappointing. In addition, the paper towels provided in places like the restroom were not very user-friendly, so we had to deduct points from our Facility rating for those reasons only.

    Excellent hospitality.

We stayed as a group of three adult women, including a friend temporarily back from Singapore. The shuttle service to the station and assistance with arranging souvenirs were truly heartwarming, showcasing exceptional hospitality. The facility was impeccably clean and well-maintained. During dinner, the proprietress personally greeted us, and when we faced a luggage delivery issue, they kindly assisted us with great care. They made our first trip to Hokuriku an unforgettable memory. In an era where many ryokans prioritize efficiency and profit margins over tradition, this ryokan preserves and carries forward the true essence of Japanese hospitality culture—a rare treasure indeed. We will definitely return when visiting the Hokuriku area again. Thank you very much!

I think it's a good Ryokan, but it was a bit disappointing.

We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days from December 31 to January 2 with my elderly mother, mother-in-law, wife, and sister-in-law (5 people in total). Overall, it is a very good ryokan. Below are some detailed points as we visit onsen ryokans nearly 20 times a year as a couple. First, the food was excellent with the chef's wonderful sense of taste. However, there were some operational issues. It took over two hours for dinner despite not drinking alcohol. Even after finishing the meal and repeatedly requesting dessert, it did not arrive until the hostess came to greet us. This gave an impression that perhaps they were instructed not to serve dessert until her greeting? It felt disjointed. On the second day’s dinner, everything was perfect within an hour and a half without any such concerns about greetings or delays. Next is the onsen experience. The water quality of both the open-air bath and sauna was excellent; however, children were causing chaos in the large communal bath—using buckets as kickboards to swim around and repeatedly diving underwater. While this is more of an issue with guest behavior than something attributable to the ryokan itself (and some high-end ryokans do restrict children), expecting such measures might be unreasonable here. Additionally troubling was seeing elderly guests sitting on the edge of baths scrubbing themselves with towels before dipping them into shared water or pouring water over their heads—clear breaches of etiquette that detracted from our experience but seemed unavoidable due to timing. On our final day’s checkout process: while extending checkout by two hours at an additional cost was appreciated greatly since no shuttle service exists between station/ryokan premises accommodating five passengers required hiring taxis instead resulting ultimately splitting group across two vehicles rather than arranging larger-capacity transport options proactively reflecting ultra-premium standards elsewhere where such services come unprompted leaving impressions otherwise ordinary albeit satisfactory overall pricing-wise reasonable yet non-budget-friendly suggesting prospective visitors weigh expectations accordingly concluding four-star rating deservedly apt summation personal perspective shared herein

The room was cold, but the meals were very satisfying.

We stayed in a first-floor Room with a private bath. Although it wasn't mid-winter, the draft coming through the sliding doors from the hallway made it cold, and the old heating equipment couldn't warm up the Room properly, leaving us feeling cold and unable to relax. We borrowed an electric heater, but it was insufficient. On the other hand, all meals were delicious and perfectly portioned, leaving us very satisfied. The crab we ordered as an option was also delightful.

    The sauna was excellent.

I enjoyed using the sauna as it was newly installed and I had it all to myself, which was fantastic. The meal was a crab-focused kaiseki course, and the staff kindly helped me with the crab meat, making it easy to eat. I also enjoyed tasting three types of sake, which were delicious. The room was new and comfortable, but I found it difficult to adjust the air conditioning to a suitable temperature as I wasn't sure how to use it; an explanation at the beginning would have been helpful. Overall, the service was excellent, and I had a wonderful stay.

    Very good

A yearly reward for myself. I visit various places each time, but I found Haiya to be a wonderful Ryokan that makes me want to return. With its serene and traditional atmosphere, stepping inside reveals a warmly lit space that instantly soothes and relaxes you from the fatigue of travel. The private family bath even includes a sauna, allowing for complete relaxation. The staff are incredibly kind; when I mentioned places I wanted to visit, they went out of their way to bring me brochures. I was so satisfied that leaving felt lonely—I definitely want to come back again!

    Great value for money

This is a long-established Ryokan. When making the Reservation, I didn't have high expectations due to the affordable price, but it pleasantly exceeded my expectations. The service was excellent, and the Room, meals, and bath were worth more than the price. We enjoyed complimentary stone sauna and table tennis for just one coin as a family! I would definitely like to repeat my stay when traveling to Hokuriku.

    Thank you for your patronage.

The staff's training is evident, as the service from check-in to check-out was excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and filling. The guest room was very spacious, allowing us to enjoy a satisfying time while admiring the garden view. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Relax at a long-established inn

First time at Awara Onsen. Choosing Haiya was the right decision. Courteous shuttle service to the station. Hospitality rooted in tradition. The Onsen, complete with a stone sauna, was perfect. Each dish in the meal had meaning and was visually delightful as well as delicious. If I may add, it would have been a perfect 120 points if the cold bath in the lovely garden sauna were colder!

The cuisine was absolutely wonderful. I was delighted to enjoy all of Fukui's specialties, including heshiko, and the taste, presentation, and tableware were beautiful, making the dining experience enjoyable. The room I stayed in had been renovated, but meals were served in a separate traditional Japanese-style room, allowing me to savor the atmosphere of a long-established ryokan.
