    It exceeded my expectations.

This was our first visit, and the Room, bath, and meals exceeded our expectations—everything was wonderful, and we enjoyed our stay thoroughly. The meals in particular, both dinner and breakfast, were carefully prepared with delicate seasoning that suited our taste. The Room was easy to use and had a luxurious feel, and the open-air bath had a great atmosphere as well. However, the spa felt like a pool for small children, so we couldn’t relax there, which was disappointing. Since the Facility is otherwise excellent, we would appreciate it if you could reconsider the usage rules and conditions. Overall, we liked it very much and would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

It made me want to stay here again.

From Tokyo, we took the Odoriko No. 1 departing at 9:00 and arrived at Izu-Kogen around 11:00. We used the free Shuttle Service bus at 11:30 and stayed at Akazawa Geihinkan. Even before check-in, we could leave our luggage. We planned to go to Pleasure Arena first, but there was no convenient bus time, so they kindly drove us there in an Alphard. The kids were thrilled—thank you very much. Pleasure Arena was hot, so I recommend securing a spot near fans or on benches with air conditioning. We enjoyed trampolines and slides with the children, forgot about time, felt like kids again, worked up a sweat, and had an amazing time. After that we checked in. Not only was the Room wonderful, but the space was so quiet it made us forget the earlier bustle. The corridor leading to the Room was just the right length and had a great atmosphere—it truly felt luxurious. Dinner started at 18:00. Mainly Japanese cuisine, and everything was delicious! The portions were more than enough even for an adult man, yet it didn’t feel heavy—perfect. The private dining room was also spacious and very comfortable. Perhaps because there are only a few rooms overall, we hardly encountered other guests in the large public bath area. We could relax and fully enjoy both the deep ocean water baths and the sauna. It made us want to come back again. One regret is that all carts were already taken and we couldn’t rent one. If possible, I would appreciate it if a few could be secured for Geihinkan guests as well. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

    A Memorable and Wonderful Stay

I was finally able to stay at Akazawa Guest House, a place I had long wanted to visit, this time together with my son and his wife. The Accommodation is beautiful from the outside, but once you step inside, you’re amazed to see platinum used throughout the walls and other details. It’s a stunning space with meticulous attention paid to every element. The pampas grass in the courtyard was especially memorable, and we were able to relax and enjoy a peaceful time away from everyday life while feeling the charm of the season. Everything—the Room, the meals, and the atmosphere throughout the property—was wonderful, of course. But what stayed with me most was the warm hospitality of all the staff. My daughter-in-law is pregnant, and they kindly accommodated our requests in advance with great care. They prepared extra pillows in our Room and thoughtfully adjusted aspects of our meals as well, which we truly appreciated. In particular, the staff member who served our meals had such a lovely smile. Their service was both attentive and genuinely warm, which made us feel very at ease. The staff member who took photos for us also went beyond what we asked for and discreetly looked out for us so we could enjoy ourselves—an act of consideration that made us very happy. It’s certainly an exceptional space filled with luxury, but even more than that, I felt that the thoughtful and heartfelt hospitality of everyone working there makes this Accommodation even more special. I’m truly glad we were able to spend such precious family time at Akazawa Guest House. On our way home, my son and his wife said together, “Let’s come back again.” Thank you very much for giving us such a wonderful time that will stay in our hearts. We would love to visit again.

    Second Visit

This was our second stay, and it was excellent again. The room attendant who assisted us this time, as well as the foreign female staff member (and the Japanese female staff member) who served us during meals, provided very pleasant service and made this trip even better than the last. This may not be related to the Accommodation, but it was disappointing that the arena (play area) had no air conditioning and felt like a sauna, and that cleanliness had declined.

The open-air bath was great, but I wouldn’t really recommend the dinner.

The best stay I’ve ever had!!

Because the number of guest groups seems limited, we hardly ran into anyone, and the bath was empty too, so we could relax and unwind. Everything was spotless, and the service was attentive down to every detail. The meals are delicious but very generous even for adults, so you really need to arrive hungry. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend having soda or carbonated alcoholic drinks with the meal! Enjoy the pure flavors of the food with tea and water instead. Also, when you stay here, you basically don’t have to pay admission fees for the surrounding Facility areas, so whether you have kids up to around junior-high age or it’s adults only, you can enjoy bowling, spa facilities, an indoor amusement area, and more—all indoors—so it’s fun regardless of the weather!! Absolutely amazing!! We’ll definitely be back!! Please go at least once!!

Disappointed by the noise from the Facility

This was my first time staying at the Guest House, though I have used the spa before. At that time, it was adults-only and I could relax, but this time families with small children were also using it, which ruined the image of a quiet adult Facility and left me disappointed. If you are promoting it as a Facility attached to the Guest House, it may be better to limit children’s use. I also visited the children’s play land, but it felt somewhat half-baked and not very appealing; I felt it would be more worthwhile to turn that area back into a pool as before.

This Accommodation is different from before and requires a more no-frills mindset.

I stayed here back when it was operated by the previous management company. I was aware that the operator has changed, and since I have stayed at several other Accommodations run by the same company, I actually arrived with high expectations. To put it simply, compared with before, this Accommodation now feels like one where you need to adjust your expectations. First, I arrived about 10 minutes before the 3:00 p.m. check-in time, but there were no staff at the drop-off area. Even after entering the front desk area, there was not a single staff member present. In addition, trash and debris on the lobby floor stood out, which was disappointing as a first impression upon arrival. As I had stayed here before, I declined an explanation of the property. However, throughout this stay—including dining—I felt it would be better not to expect much in terms of service. On the other hand, the building itself, guest rooms, large public bath, and deep ocean water remain just as appealing as ever. The original company built everything to a very high standard, and that charm has not changed. In terms of its physical aspects alone, I can still recommend this Accommodation. That said, having known Akazawa Geihinkan in its earlier days (under previous management), my impression is that even service quality has changed significantly. Because this is an Accommodation with such excellent facilities (Facility), I hope that service—including hospitality and cleaning—will once again rise to a level worthy of them.

Differences Before and After the Renovation

I visited several times before the renovation, and this was my first visit since the renovation… but… First of all, the customer service was extremely sloppy… (all by the same staff member). - The chopstick sleeves were left in plain sight and never collected until the end. - Because they prioritized efficiency in deciding who to serve first, someone with no sense of proper etiquette handled it. - I don’t mind that there’s no valet service, but guests have to carry their own luggage. …Honestly, it felt like amateurs were running the place. The one saving grace was a Chinese staff member with short hair working in the morning. She worked hard and was polite—others should learn from her. More than anything, foreign staff are doing their best, which makes me want to support them. A young Japanese male staff member also tried hard and remained polite even though he seemed unsure. So this is what the Guest House is like now… If writing this leads to any change, I’d consider coming again… that’s how I feel. Compared with someone who acts overly pretentious and “used to it,” I find foreign staff who work sincerely—even if they make mistakes—feel much warmer.

    The meals are outstanding!

The Room, meals, bath, and staff were all very satisfying for adults. If I had to mention one concern, the wonderful thalasso pool at Akazawa Spa felt like a kids’ summer vacation pool, so it was hard to relax. From 8/1, young children were also allowed in, and many needed float rings and were playing in the lazy river. Since the Room and meals provided such a relaxing and satisfying time for adults, I couldn’t help wishing Akazawa Spa had remained a space where adults could unwind as well. This is an Accommodation I would like to visit again, so next time I’d like to go outside of the summer vacation season and enjoy Akazawa Spa too.

Everything was wonderful except for two disappointing points.

Although it was only a one-night stay, my overall satisfaction with the Accommodation was very high. However, there were two disappointing points. 1) I have dietary restrictions and consulted with the property before my stay. I was told that meals would be prepared without those ingredients. However, the restricted ingredient was included twice in total—once at dinner and once at breakfast. The first time, I noticed after taking a bite and felt unwell. The second time, I noticed when it was served and had it replaced immediately. Since we had discussed this in advance, this was very disappointing. Some guests may have allergies as well, so I hope information can be shared more thoroughly between the kitchen and serving staff. 2) Both dinner and breakfast were served by overseas staff members. Their Japanese was not very fluent, and they did not seem to clearly remember the breakfast menu details or explanations, so I could not understand what they were trying to explain. If these two points are improved, it would have been a perfect 5/5 stay. The Japanese male staff member also provided very pleasant service, and it was an ideal Accommodation for an adult girls’ trip.

    We were looking for ...

We were looking for an Accommodation that both our parents in their 70s and our middle-school-aged child could enjoy, and Akazawa Geihinkan caught our eye, so we stayed here this time. The result: we were extremely satisfied. Our parents said they want to come back again soon, and our son never got bored—there wasn’t enough time! One small disappointment was that the adjacent Akazawa Spa had been available only to guests aged 13 and over until the day before our stay, but from August it became open to everyone from age 0. This is a positive change for families with small children, but we had made our Reservation expecting a quieter spa experience, so it was lively and we left the spa earlier than planned. On the other hand, we were able to use the private sauna room and relax there instead. We usually like trying different Accommodations, but this time we felt we’d like to visit at least once a year and enjoy the scenery in each season. Also, the in-room open-air bath with deep ocean water was amazing! Thank you for letting us leave earlier at dinner. Thanks to your pleasant handling of our selfish request, it became a very satisfying trip.

I’d love to stay here again!

It was my first stay here, and I truly enjoyed the wonderful craftsmanship of a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The Onsen was excellent and relaxing, and the breakfast was outstanding. Above all, it was incredibly calming that we hardly ran into anyone and the place never felt crowded. That alone is where I found the real value. Because we had a Child Sharing Existing Bedding, we requested a Hollywood twin setup. They didn’t just push the beds together—they properly made it up by covering the gap between them with sheets, which I really appreciated. That said, some people may have mixed feelings about the Onsen water. As explained (deep ocean water), it made my body feel a bit sluggish. I’m sure there are other benefits that outweigh this, but it was slightly disappointing. Also, the lounge with darts and billiards seems to be open to guests from other Hotels as well. When we stopped by at night, it felt like a hangout spot for rowdy groups, which was disappointing—we left immediately. Without time limits, capacity limits, or restrictions to Hotel guests only, this could easily get out of hand, so I think this should be improved.

You’ll have a highly satisfying trip.

Including the service, meals, and Facility management, we are extremely satisfied—this is our fourth stay. The large public bath is also kept very clean. Since the number of guests is limited to begin with, it’s quiet and pleasant. You can also use the spa and enjoy a relaxing time. If I had to mention one thing, mobile phone reception inside the building is a bit weak. Wi-Fi is available, but there are areas with no signal—including parts of the lounge—which is slightly inconvenient, so I would appreciate it if this could be improved.

    Impressions After the Renovation

I have been staying here since shortly after the Facility opened, but I heard the operating company changed last autumn, so I visited again thinking things might have settled down a bit. There are now more “fun and playful” Facilities, and the operator’s intentions came through clearly. However, my impression was that the service still has room for improvement. At dinner, my spouse and I ordered two different types of white wine. The female staff member served them by name, so when I asked, “Um, which one is this?”, she replied, “The cheaper one.” Since she hadn’t confirmed which was cheaper either, I felt it would have been smarter to distinguish them by grape variety—such as “This is the Chardonnay.” At breakfast we were served by a male staff member; perhaps he was nervous, but he was breathing through his mouth, and each time he brought food his breathing right next to my ear really bothered me. Overall, the seasoning of the food has become stronger than before. Preferences may vary, but by the end of the meal it felt like a salty taste lingered in my mouth. The fresh fish and soup were delicious. The Facility has been kept clean and well maintained as before. Because it is such a wonderful Facility and space, I sincerely hope the service will catch up.

    Room Management

Stayed on the first floor with a small child. The moment we opened the Room door, we noticed a damp smell—an odor typical of an old Room. The wooden flooring, tatami, and even the futons felt damp and sticky to the touch. It was hard to call it a luxury Ryokan atmosphere, so we asked the front desk to address it and they set up a dehumidifier. However, it ran with a deafening noise, ruining any sense of ambiance. It felt like staying in a Business Hotel. We couldn’t tolerate it and requested further assistance, then moved to a second-floor Room. The second floor was indeed comfortable with no noticeable humidity. The next morning, we tried to use one of their highlights—the in-room open-air bath—but cleaning was inadequate, with green moss-like buildup in various places. We didn’t feel like getting in and ended up not using the open-air bath at all. I wondered why I had made this Reservation at such an expensive price. Also, there were many small ants near the balcony area (inside the Room), making it somewhere we didn’t want to go near—even though we hadn’t opened any windows. Perhaps as an apology for moving Rooms late at night, we received an email from IKYU early in the morning about changes to our Reservation details. However, at checkout there was no mention of any change from the Ryokan staff; when we asked, they told us verbally that the price had been discounted. At the time I accepted it as such, but shouldn’t anything related to charges be presented by the Accommodation in writing? As for the Room itself, there were too many disappointments for us to want to stay again. That said, the large public bath felt open and airy, and its deep-sea water quality was excellent. The meals—especially dinner—were satisfying in terms of ingredient freshness, creativity of preparation, and portion size. The private dining room was also impeccable in both design and spaciousness. The adjacent Pleasure Arena Facility is large; our child loved unique attractions like trampolines and ball pits so much that it made proper Room maintenance all the more disappointing.

It was slightly below my expectations.

This was our first stay on an overnight trip my daughter planned because she wanted to try a deep-ocean water bath. The building and Facilities felt luxurious, and we truly enjoyed the delicious meals. Overall, I think it is a good Accommodation, but I would like to list a few points that stood out in the hope they may be helpful. First, at check-in we waited in the lobby for nearly 10 minutes with no welcome drink or similar service. Two other groups of guests arrived as well, and considering the name “Guest House,” it was disappointing not to feel much hospitality. The bachelor staff member in charge worked hard, which I appreciate, but his speech was unclear and everything took too long—from check-in to being escorted to our Room and then receiving explanations inside the Room—which became frustrating. Other staff we passed in the lobby did not greet us with a smile either, and overall the service did not feel like that of a high-end Ryokan. At the private dining room, we were welcomed nicely by a female staff member with a pleasant smile. However, despite having an open kitchen where you can see the chef, he did not even nod; even without words, some eye contact to convey “welcome” would have been expected. I hope this can be improved. The male staff member who served our meal was well trained and satisfactory. The male front desk staff seemed unfriendly and did not remember guests’ faces or names, which left me with concerns. As for the deep-ocean water public bath and the open-air bath in our Room, I personally prefer slightly hotter water; however, if this is your standard policy then it cannot be helped. We also used the Akazawa Spa next door, and my daughter was pleased. The Facilities were excellent, but from inside the Accommodation we could see weeds standing out in the garden scenery outside, and it felt as though tree trimming had not kept up. Since this was right after rainy season when plants grow fastest it may be unavoidable; still, guests do notice these details as well—so I am mentioning it intentionally. I apologize for comparing with other Accommodations/Ryokan properties elsewhere; however despite being called “Guest House,” my impression was that it felt like an ordinary upscale Ryokan rather than something exceptional for its name.

    We stayed here for t...

We stayed here for the first time to celebrate our child’s birthday. It was great that we could use the related facilities free of charge before and after check-in. We had lots of fun! However, the facilities are spread out, so you do need to travel a bit between them. It seems you can rent a golf cart if you complete the procedure at Akazawa Onsen Hotel, but there was no guidance about this. There were no drinks in the large public bath, and there were no cups or glasses available for use in the lounge—these should be properly provided during operating hours. The Room hangers were rusty. The bed was placed too close to the closet, so we had to climb onto the bed to use it. The explanations about both the Room and the Facility were insufficient. The response when calling from the Room was very poor. From the next morning until check-out, the air conditioning in our accommodation building wasn’t working and it was humid (the main building was cool). We asked for an adjustment, but it did not improve. Regarding our child’s allergy accommodations: we contacted you in advance (one month before). Although we did not specifically request special handling, we were told it would be accommodated, so we did not bring any outside food. Unfortunately, one of the seasonings provided contained the allergen in question (it is a common product sold at supermarkets). As a parent I recognized it and my child avoided eating it; I also confirmed this on the manufacturer’s website. When we pointed this out, a foreign staff member only said “sorry.” They also said they would remove disliked ingredients as an accommodation, but they were not removed. Disliked foods are one thing, but allergies can be life-threatening—if it is difficult to handle properly, it would be better not to offer allergy accommodations at all. Especially since we did not ask for them. The physical aspects of the Facility are good overall, but service is lacking. With only 15 Rooms at Akazawa Geihinkan and its positioning as a luxury Accommodation…this was disappointing. During our stay there seemed to be only one staff member whose service matched that level (we felt similarly at affiliated properties such as Fufu). I also felt that having more foreign staff may be part of why some issues occurred. Even our pre-arrival phone call was handled by foreign staff (we requested a change to dinner time, but this information was not shared at check-in). What we liked - Plenty of towels in the Room - Many different recreational facilities - The bath in our Room felt wonderful - The food was delicious There are many facilities for children to enjoy so we would like to visit again; however, next time we may choose Akazawa Onsen Hotel rather than Akazawa Geihinkan.

    This was my first st...

This was my first stay, and it was a calm, Japanese-style Hotel where I could truly relax. The woman who carried my luggage to the Room was a foreign staff member, and I was impressed by her polite service. When I took off my shoes, she neatly lined them up and placed them to the side. Since I walk with a cane, she also prepared a higher chair because she thought a standard floor chair would be difficult for me. Thanks to that, sitting down and standing up were much easier, and it reduced strain on my legs. Each time someone entered or left the Room, they knelt politely—it felt like being at an upscale traditional restaurant. The Room was spacious, and the tatami made it very relaxing. The open-air bath was also wonderful. The food was delicious and very satisfying. The woman who served the meal was also a foreign staff member, but her service was courteous and her language was easy to understand. Next time, I would like to invite friends to come with me. The disappointing points were that there wasn’t a proper smoking area—I had a hard time in the rain—and there were no bathrobes. Two Hotels I stayed at previously offered them at the same price point. With such an excellent open-air bath, it’s unfortunate not to be able to relax comfortably afterward.

It was an even better birthday trip than I expected!

We stayed on the birthday Plan this time. To sum it up, it was truly amazing! I had been looking forward to it even before we arrived, and it not only met my expectations but exceeded them. I’m really glad we were able to spend such an important anniversary here. We enjoyed both the open-air bath in our Room and the large public bath, and we were able to soak at a relaxed pace with hardly anyone else around—it felt almost like having it all to ourselves, which was incredibly luxurious. We also appreciated the complimentary water, beer, and Pocari Sweat; I was genuinely impressed by such thoughtful hospitality. We were also looking forward to using other facilities after checkout, but since it was Saturday, places like the billiards and bowling areas were very crowded with families. There didn’t seem to be any staff managing turns, and at times the same group used them for a long time, so we weren’t really able to enjoy them—this was the only slight disappointment. We had imagined a calmer atmosphere where we could enjoy ourselves with drinks, so improving this would make it an even better Facility. That said, even considering that point, it was still such a wonderful stay that I sincerely wished we could have stayed one more night. Thanks to all of your staff, it became an unforgettable birthday trip. We would love to stay again.

We stayed with three guests this time. All of the staff were very kind, and we were satisfied with both the quality and quantity of the meals. The Onsen in our Room and the large public bath were also wonderful, making our stay truly relaxing. Since there are only a few Rooms, we had minimal interaction with other guests—only hearing some conversation in the dining area—which gave us a strong sense of privacy. We felt that if we had stayed for a few more days, we could have refreshed both body and mind even more, and we have already decided to return. Thank you very much for all your hospitality.

    A Perfect Mother-and-Daughter Trip

I stayed here with my elderly mother, and we were both very satisfied with everything. However, she had two comments: (1) The meals were excellent and showed great care in the cooking, but for older guests they could have been a little lighter. (2) The bed is set one step above the floor, but because the edge of the platform and the floor have the same wood-grain finish, it felt easy to misstep.

    Great value for the price!

This was my first visit! The facilities were well maintained and very clean. Perhaps due to the season, there were quite a few insects. In particular, I would have liked more thorough fly control. That said, the Onsen was wonderful, and the in-room open-air bath was amazing! The recreation area offered various activities such as darts, billiards, and table tennis, plus all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink alcohol, snacks, and soft drinks there. Both breakfast and dinner were very delicious, with just the right portions. Overall, it exceeded expectations for the price! I hope to see further improvements in more thorough cleaning and seasonal insect control.

    High-quality Accommodation.

I felt that the large deep-sea-water bath, the open-air bath in the Room, and the meals were all of a high standard. The only thing was that, perhaps because it was during the rainy season and I usually sleep without using air conditioning, the duvet felt heavy (possibly due to how the bed was made), so I thought it would be best if a lighter summer blanket were available separately.

This was my first stay since the renovation.\nSince it became a pleasure land, there are now many more enjoyable Facilities than before, and it has really improved!\nI also fully enjoyed the spa I always use—there are now private saunas and a stone sauna. The rental swimsuits have been renewed as well, which was great.\nI ended up having fun at the Treasure Arena too, despite my age. I came to check it out because I’d like to visit next time with my grandchild.\nThere is a height restriction, but it seems like you can still enjoy it even if you don’t meet it.\nThe lounge was also excellent. There were various drinks and snacks, and we had fun playing table tennis and darts.\nThe meals were very delicious as well. The sashimi in particular offered many kinds of fish, and I enjoyed tasting the differences.\nThe eel takikomi rice was delicious too, but there was still quite a lot left, which felt wasteful. If you could make onigiri to take away like before, I think it would be nice for eating later at night since breakfast starts at 8:00 the next day.\nOverall, it was a very satisfying stay.\nIt’s an Accommodation that makes you want to come back again for sure.\nThank you very much.

    About Our International Staff

I stayed twice—once at the end of last year and again this time. While I truly appreciate that you accommodated my dietary dislikes and I was satisfied overall, I could hardly understand what one of the foreign staff members was saying. There was no explanation about the Room or the key, and I couldn’t understand the details of the meal at all. I could tell they were doing their best, but since they were chatting and laughing with other foreign staff, I wondered if Japanese is not their strong point. The foreign staff member who assisted me last time still provided service in fluent Japanese, so there may be individual differences.

    I slept very well.

Perhaps thanks to the deep-sea water, I was able to enjoy a deep sleep in my room for the first time in a while. I also used the spa Facility and had a massage at the Onsen building, making it a meaningful stay that helped relieve my fatigue. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the female staff member who assisted with our meals was courteous and wonderful. I would like to stay again if I have the opportunity.
