    A Perfect Mother-and-Daughter Trip

I stayed here with my elderly mother, and we were both very satisfied with everything. However, she had two comments: (1) The meals were excellent and showed great care in the cooking, but for older guests they could have been a little lighter. (2) The bed is set one step above the floor, but because the edge of the platform and the floor have the same wood-grain finish, it felt easy to misstep.

    Great value for the price!

This was my first visit! The facilities were well maintained and very clean. Perhaps due to the season, there were quite a few insects. In particular, I would have liked more thorough fly control. That said, the Onsen was wonderful, and the in-room open-air bath was amazing! The recreation area offered various activities such as darts, billiards, and table tennis, plus all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink alcohol, snacks, and soft drinks there. Both breakfast and dinner were very delicious, with just the right portions. Overall, it exceeded expectations for the price! I hope to see further improvements in more thorough cleaning and seasonal insect control.

    High-quality Accommodation.

I felt that the large deep-sea-water bath, the open-air bath in the Room, and the meals were all of a high standard. The only thing was that, perhaps because it was during the rainy season and I usually sleep without using air conditioning, the duvet felt heavy (possibly due to how the bed was made), so I thought it would be best if a lighter summer blanket were available separately.

    This was my first st...

This was my first stay since the renovation.\nSince it became a pleasure land, there are now many more enjoyable Facilities than before, and it has really improved!\nI also fully enjoyed the spa I always use—there are now private saunas and a stone sauna. The rental swimsuits have been renewed as well, which was great.\nI ended up having fun at the Treasure Arena too, despite my age. I came to check it out because I’d like to visit next time with my grandchild.\nThere is a height restriction, but it seems like you can still enjoy it even if you don’t meet it.\nThe lounge was also excellent. There were various drinks and snacks, and we had fun playing table tennis and darts.\nThe meals were very delicious as well. The sashimi in particular offered many kinds of fish, and I enjoyed tasting the differences.\nThe eel takikomi rice was delicious too, but there was still quite a lot left, which felt wasteful. If you could make onigiri to take away like before, I think it would be nice for eating later at night since breakfast starts at 8:00 the next day.\nOverall, it was a very satisfying stay.\nIt’s an Accommodation that makes you want to come back again for sure.\nThank you very much.

    About Our International Staff

I stayed twice—once at the end of last year and again this time. While I truly appreciate that you accommodated my dietary dislikes and I was satisfied overall, I could hardly understand what one of the foreign staff members was saying. There was no explanation about the Room or the key, and I couldn’t understand the details of the meal at all. I could tell they were doing their best, but since they were chatting and laughing with other foreign staff, I wondered if Japanese is not their strong point. The foreign staff member who assisted me last time still provided service in fluent Japanese, so there may be individual differences.

    It was well received.

I invited my son, who usually lives overseas, and his two partners to stay here. They returned deeply impressed by the wonderful Japanese-style atmosphere and meals. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    I slept very well.

Perhaps thanks to the deep-sea water, I was able to enjoy a deep sleep in my room for the first time in a while. I also used the spa Facility and had a massage at the Onsen building, making it a meaningful stay that helped relieve my fatigue. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the female staff member who assisted with our meals was courteous and wonderful. I would like to stay again if I have the opportunity.

A family trip with my parents in their late 60s

Overall, it was a wonderful Ryokan. First, the Room was very clean, easy to use, and relaxing. The amenities were what you would expect from a luxury Hotel, and I had no particular complaints. The open-air bath in the Room was also excellent! It rained throughout our stay, but soaking in the bath while listening to the lovely sound of birds felt truly luxurious. Regarding the meals, some Reviews mentioned that portions were a bit small, but both dinner and breakfast were extremely delicious and generously portioned—we were very satisfied. There are many nearby Facilities available for unlimited use, so it felt like great value for money. Our family especially loved the spa and is already saying they want to come again! As for service, everyone welcomed us kindly; however, we couldn’t clearly understand the meal explanations from one of the international staff members, which was very disappointing. All in all, it was an excellent Ryokan, and we would love to visit again.

    Overwhelmed with gratitude.

A pleasant fragrance throughout the building. The entrance, rear areas, extensions, the building and furnishings, and even the details of corners and edges (rounded corners, cherry wood, etc.) were carefully crafted down to the smallest points, making it safe and reassuring even for children. The bathrooms and overall cleanliness were thoroughly maintained—you could really feel the care put in by hand. From below to the tatami flooring to above and up to the ceiling, everything was very gentle on the eyes and soothing. The ceiling’s shapes and textures were varied and interesting. The service was also excellent; it was clear that training and guidance are well implemented. There were many international guests as well, yet a distinctly Japanese style of hospitality could be felt throughout. At the dining venue, your timely response to irregular requests was wonderful. We appreciated your consideration for different age groups. It might have been nice if we could have been seated in a different area for breakfast versus dinner at the dining venue. For drinks in the bath changing area, smaller bottles than 500 ml (Pocari Sweat size would be ideal) would be better. I had hoped for small canned beer but was disappointed there wasn’t any. It was also disappointing that cleaning around the sinks outside the large public bath did not seem sufficient. It was a little disappointing that there was no ikebana arrangement in our Room (even though there was a vase...). We stayed as three people; it might have been good to consult with us about futon arrangements on tatami (sleeping). Having three beds lined up side by side—with height differences—was not practical. At check-out we were given service vouchers for a glamping Facility; however, since this is meant to encourage repeat visits to your main guesthouse services, I didn’t understand why you would recommend a lower-tier service instead. We stayed while celebrating both a birthday and a wedding anniversary at once, but I’m not sure we received services suited to that occasion... (there seemed to be a lack of heartfelt communication). I’ve written various points here; nevertheless, thank you very much for such a wonderful time. We are grateful to all staff members. Please let us stay again when we have another opportunity.

    A Comfortable Experience

We stayed the day after the typhoon passed. The Hotel staff welcomed us warmly with smiles, and we were smoothly escorted to our Room, which left a great impression. The guest Room was bright and wonderful, and the open-air bath in the Room was extremely comfortable. The deep ocean water bath I experienced for the first time had a different kind of appeal from a typical Onsen, and it was truly relaxing. Also, after arriving we learned that nearby Facilities could be used free of charge, which felt like an excellent value. We especially enjoyed private bowling, the spa, and a day-use Onsen Facility, and we were able to have a great time even after check-out. The food was also outstanding; attention to detail could be felt throughout, and we were impressed by the chef’s superb skills. That said, it was a little disappointing to see chips on some tableware and clay pots. Since Kato Pleasure Group has become the new owner and has beautifully renovated the property, I feel that updating the tableware as well would further highlight the chefs’ dedication. This stay was to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, and having commemorative photos taken became a wonderful memory for us. If possible, offering services such as a cake or a small keepsake would make it feel even more special and provide value beyond the price. There are just a few things we hope for in the future, but above all my wife was truly delighted—so we would love to return again. Thank you for such a pleasant time.

Enough to help you forget the unfortunate event.

Earlier that day, my wife and I took a walk from Izu-Kogen Station to see the coastal suspension bridge before check-in. After taking the Shuttle Service and arriving at the Hotel, we realized one of my VC&A earrings was missing, and it really put a damper on what was supposed to be a special trip. However, we relaxed in the private sauna at Akazawa Spa, enjoyed an outstanding dinner, had fun bowling at Akazawa Bowl, and ended the night playing darts in the members-only night lounge. Seeing my wife gradually cheer up made me feel relieved as well. The highlight was soaking in the open-air bath in our Room while gazing at the night sky. I even made a wish that the earring would turn up somewhere in the Room—but it never did. Still, this was truly an exceptional Ryokan. Hakone Suishoen and Yufuin’s Muji-to were also memorable for us, but personally this Accommodation was just as impressive. Every member of staff worked so hard and spoke excellent Japanese—even smoothly explaining difficult dish names. Losing such an expensive earring (and not being able to replace it) was a huge shock, but thanks to this Ryokan it still became an unforgettable birthday trip for my wife. We’re very grateful to both my wife and Akazawa Geihinkan—this was a wonderful Ryokan we’d love to visit again.

The perfect place to relax and unwind!

I love Katoh Pleasure Group Hotels, so I stayed here as well. The Room, dining, game lounge, cafe lounge, bowling, and spa—every service was perfect. At the entrance photo spot, a staff member kindly took wonderful photos for us. Even on a rainy day, adults can relax and enjoy a full day indoors, so we were extremely satisfied!!! It’s a wonderful place that makes me want to stay again.

    We had a wonderful time.

The Facility has a striking presence from the moment you see the entrance. There is a small lounge, and while the Room is traditionally Japanese in style, it offers great views and a solid, refined feel; aside from slightly ill-fitting windows, we had no issues. The meals suited our tastes and were truly delicious. The preparation felt careful, and the menu was well composed and sophisticated. We also used the on-site spa and the day-use Onsen; the spa’s thalassotherapy was enjoyable, and the day-use Onsen offered breathtaking views from the open-air bath. The deep-sea water bath was excellent as well—honestly even more warming than some Onsens. This time we only looked around (and did not use) the separate DEEP SEA Lounge building or the bowling alley, but they seem like they would be great fun for families. Many of the staff were international, so there were moments when Japanese was a little hard to catch, but everyone was very courteous and helpful, so communication was never an issue. At checkout I forgot to receive my Diamond benefit, but thank you very much for mailing it to me afterward. Overall we were highly satisfied, and next time I hope to return with my daughter as well.

Streamlining and efficiency often come at the expense of service satisfaction.

This was my first stay since the renovation. As a luxury Facility, it stands out, and overall I was very satisfied. However, as a long-time guest (for over 10 years), I cannot deny that the service has declined. I understand the need to reduce costs from a management perspective, but as a guest, it is disappointing to see the quality of service decrease.

For stays at Akazawa Guest House

This was my second stay. I made a Reservation because the kaiseki cuisine was outstanding last time and I wanted to stay again. The kaiseki meal was truly delicious and beautifully presented. The Room was spacious and spotless, and it also had an Onsen bath, so I could relax at my own pace. I was completely satisfied. Treating myself once in a while is nice.

    Disappointing customer service.

Thank you for hosting us again for three nights. The last time we visited was during the New Year holidays, and it felt like there were more international staff members. I have no issue with international staff working here, but it seemed that staffing was not well matched to each role. Why is an experienced front-of-house staff member assigned to the spa? Wouldn’t it be better to have someone who is not yet comfortable speaking Japanese practice in a different position? At dinner, the staff could not explain the dishes and did not seem to understand what we ordered, so some items were never brought. At least for dinner service, I would appreciate being assisted by someone who can accurately understand Japanese, as before. Also, one of the international staff members doing rounds in the bath area left their sandals scattered messily. I think they should at least place them neatly together and move them to the side.

A one-of-a-kind retreat where serene elegance brings peace of mind.

I have stayed here many times over the years, and each visit restores my spirit through the serene dignity of Akazawa Guest House. The Sukiya-style details throughout are defined by a refined, restrained beauty, and the meticulous design down to the smallest elements leaves a gentle afterglow. That this guest house has preserved its unchanging presence for so long is entirely thanks to the dedication of the proprietress and everyone involved. I feel deep respect and gratitude for those quiet, steady efforts. I sincerely hope that this place—cherished and protected by the proprietress—will continue to welcome guests quietly and beautifully for years to come. The view ahead is softly embraced by the rich vegetation of Izu Kogen, offering a sense of calm as if one were being gently sheltered. The harmony between nature, architecture, and human craftsmanship is truly irreplaceable. The hospitality also maintains a perfect sense of distance—never intrusive, never lacking—and within each understated gesture you can feel genuine consideration. The way they respect each guest’s time while quietly staying close feels like an embodiment of this guest house’s aesthetic sensibility. The large bath filled with deep ocean water is another blessing unique to this area. Its open design overlooking the garden is unforgettable; surrendering to the warm water while quietly sensing shifting light and seasonal changes leads you into profound relaxation. An Accommodation that stands apart from noise and showiness, finding its true value in stillness. It feels like an incomparable place to stay—especially for those who seek authentic quality.

    Anyway, the meals were…

I had the pleasure of staying in this Ryokan’s best Room, “Yamamomo.” Beforehand, we exchanged detailed messages about the meals. They kindly changed the “usually tube wasabi” to fresh wasabi (an additional JPY 500), and I also shared my requests regarding quality and portion size, but… To be honest, I think food lovers would rate the dining quite strictly. In detail: the portions of firefly squid and pen shell in the appetizer were far too small. The sashimi felt too basic. Given the location, I expected items such as spiny lobster and turban shell. The abalone was also quite small. In addition, there were only two slices of beef in the hot pot; I believe four to five slices would be appropriate. As for the finishing rice dish, it was bamboo shoot rice for the season, but the key bamboo shoots were chopped extremely small, and their quality was not very good either. Since this is a Room that costs close to JPY 200,000 per night, I believe that increasing the food cost per person by another JPY 5,000–8,000 would make this a highly rated Ryokan. With all due respect—and out of genuine concern—I hope your team will consider this seriously as a group. One more point beyond dining: have you considered appointing a head of the Ryokan (a proprietress or even a male manager)? I personally feel it is essential…

Soak in the open-air bath while listening to the song of Japanese bush warblers.

The entire property seemed to have been renovated and was very clean. A Japanese bush warbler appeared to visit the garden visible from the Room, and soaking in the open-air bath while listening to its wonderful song was the best. Since every Room has a private open-air bath, I expected the public bath to be small, but it was surprisingly spacious—and with no one else there, I enjoyed it to the fullest! The meals were also excellent, and I would love to return. Thank you very much.

We were very satisfied with our stay.

This was our first stay. We had seen some harsh Reviews after the renovation, so we were a little worried, but overall we were extremely satisfied. My husband and I stay about 10 times a year in Rooms with an open-air bath in the same price range. We were pleasantly surprised that the entertainment Facility—unlike at other Accommodations—was available not only before check-in but even after check-out. We enjoyed bowling and darts before check-in, then after checking in we relaxed in our Room, soaked in the bath, watched TV, and took it easy. The deep ocean water is amazing—my skin felt moisturized and silky smooth. With Onsen baths that are not free-flowing but recirculated, chlorine often makes my skin dry and rough, but this bath left my skin smooth so I could soak again and again. Dinner—the highlight—was truly delicious. Some Reviews mentioned the portions being too much or too little, but for us as a couple in our 50s it was just right: filling without being excessive. The presentation and seasoning were well thought out, and everything tasted wonderful. If I had to say one thing, it was a bit disappointing that the meat dish was a mizore hot pot with only two slices of beef—I wanted just a little more (haha). We don’t drink alcohol so we eat quite quickly, but they served each course at our pace. Normally we ask for faster service, but this time they kept a great rhythm without us needing to say anything. After dinner we also enjoyed darts and billiards. This time we didn’t have enough time to use the day-use Onsen area as well, so next time we’d like to try it. The next morning we soaked again before breakfast. Breakfast was also perfectly portioned and very tasty. All of the staff were kind and helpful, and we were completely satisfied with the Room, meals, and baths. Just one note for future improvement: there seemed to be one spot missed by housekeeping. A hairbrush (possibly from a previous guest) had been left under the shower in our Room. Also, the light on the illuminated mirror at the vanity didn’t turn on—it seemed like the batteries were dead or it needed charging. I tried to leave a note about it on the letter paper provided in the Room, but even the pen didn’t work (haha). That said, none of this bothered us compared with how much fun we had—we were truly very satisfied overall. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    It was a worthwhile stay.

The Room, bath, meals, café lounge, and all services were excellent. In particular, the kaiseki cuisine was outstanding—considering the accommodation cost, it was a truly delightful dining experience, both dinner and breakfast. Everyone at the Hotel was kind and wonderful. With Shuttle Service from Izu-Kogen, it was great to be able to get there easily from Tokyo without any inconvenience.

    This is my second stay!

I stayed here once before the renovation and was impressed by the excellent hospitality and atmosphere. It was quiet and felt special, allowing me to relax, so I decided to return. This was my second visit, and I had been looking forward to Akazawa Geihinkan after its reopening. We visited as a family trip to celebrate my daughter’s birthday as well. The Facility atmosphere, baths, and meals were all satisfying, and we had a very comfortable stay. We hardly ran into other guests, so we could truly unwind. The only slight disappointment was the service during meals. Because the food is delicious, I would say that it would have been even better if there had been more enthusiasm in conveying how good it is. I hope Akazawa Geihinkan continues to become even more wonderful.

    Disappointing customer service.

The Room, open-air bath, and large public bath were great, and we were very satisfied with the lounge where you can play billiards and table tennis—one of this Facility’s highlights—as well as the bowling alley. However, from the start some in-room amenities such as toothbrushes were missing. When we mentioned this, they brought them right away, but even then some items were still missing. The staff also seemed inexperienced overall; their service was awkward, and there was not enough explanation of rules and precautions when using the lounge. In addition, there was hardly anyone at the front desk. It seems the staff changed after last year’s renovation, but it felt like customer service is an area that needs improvement. As for the meals, tastes vary, but for me they were neither particularly good nor bad, and compared with similar facilities elsewhere, the complimentary drinks in the in-room refrigerator felt limited.

Excellent Facility and service! But the dinner was...

The Facility and service were excellent. In addition to the Room and the large public bath, the private bowling, spa, and deep-sea activities were all very good. However, the meals we had been looking forward to were very disappointing. There were no high-quality ingredients, and there was little sense of creativity or visual appeal. If the dining improves, this is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again.

    Packed with highlights

The Room was a comfortable, just-right size and well designed. The open-air bath also worked seamlessly with the balcony, making it very convenient to use. The amenities are simple but sufficient, which was perfectly fine. The towels were thick and fluffy, and the priorities matched my preferences, so I had a very positive impression. The large public bath seems to have been changed to an open-air style, and I really enjoyed the sense of openness. Depending on how busy it is, you may need to adjust your dining time, but here it seems there are as many private dining rooms as there are guest rooms, so you can dine at your preferred time. We were also able to use the Onsen spa and the game lounge, so there was plenty to enjoy without it ever feeling noisy—great for adults who want to relax and have fun at their own pace. My skin felt wonderfully smooth as well.

    A Memorable Stay

This was my fourth repeat stay since the DHC days, and my first visit since the management change. This time, we stayed to celebrate two happy occasions: my 70th birthday and my grandchild’s first birthday. Thanks to you, it became a truly memorable trip. It may be presumptuous to compare with the DHC era, but I would like to share a few observations. In terms of facilities, the Accommodation has improved even further, including repairs to the in-room open-air bath. On the service side, however, I felt there are still some challenges. Back then, experienced attendants provided impeccable service that anticipated every need. The staff are now younger; it was heartwarming to see how hard they worked, but I felt they have not yet reached the level of anticipating guests’ needs one step ahead. There were also a few moments where handling infants seemed unfamiliar (as I recall there used to be an age restriction of junior high school and above during the DHC era, so we are grateful you accepted us). As for dining, it used to be delicate kaiseki cuisine; now it feels more like creative dishes that make good use of ingredients, though I found the meat dishes somewhat lacking—this is probably just personal preference. Regarding amenities: in the DHC era their products were lined up in the Room and could all be taken home as part of promotion, so it may not be fair to compare; however, even compared with other Ryokan in this price range, they felt inexpensive. I wrote some strict comments as an Akazawa fan and hope you will take them as expectations for continued improvement. Once again, thank you sincerely for making our stay such a wonderful and memorable one.

    There isn’t enough food.

I have stayed at Fufu properties many times, but this was my first time at Akazawa Guest House. It was a spacious, beautiful, and truly impressive building. The Room was also very clean with a great view, the bed was comfortable, and I was able to relax and unwind. From welcome to farewell, the staff provided wonderful hospitality and made us feel very comfortable. We traveled with a child, and they were considerate in many ways; their smiles were lovely as well. The on-site Akazawa Spa and the Akazawa Onsen-kan nearby (with complimentary tickets provided) were excellent, and our child really enjoyed them. The kids’ space had many beautiful picture books, and we would love to visit again. One thing worth noting is that the meals were somewhat disappointing. Overall portions were small, the ingredients served felt inexpensive throughout, and it was unfortunate that there wasn’t a memorable signature main dish. Breakfast also had fewer side dishes than other Ryokan we have stayed at, so we did not feel fully satisfied. There is no room service or food available for purchase within the property either, which added to the feeling that the meal portions were insufficient. We truly appreciated that they provided miso soup and plain rice free of charge for our one-year-old son. Thank you very much for taking care of us.
