Beyond the gate in this quiet residential neighborhood, an unexpectedly extraordinary escape awaits.
We stayed here as a couple—my girlfriend, who’s from Kagoshima, and me—for my last summer trip in my 20s. About a 15-minute drive from the airport. The area is a quiet residential neighborhood until you arrive, but the moment you pass through the gate, the atmosphere shifts—and by the time we stepped into the lobby, it already felt completely removed from everyday life. That “switching” sensation was incredible; it might be the first time I’ve thought “I’m so glad we came” right at check-in. Dinner was excellent—the meat was as good as expected—but what surprised me most, honestly, was the rice. It had real presence from the very first bite, and we were told it’s grown locally. Each dish was carefully prepared, and my girlfriend and I kept saying to each other, “This is amazing,” again and again as we ate. The staff were also outstanding: polite without being stiff, with just the right sense of distance. We often felt their genuine commitment to providing great service. Even something as simple as the water prepared in our Room showed thoughtful attention to detail. In the morning we crossed the bridge in front of the Accommodation and took a walk along the river. The water was truly beautiful, and apparently there are even ayu sweetfish there. With both Onsen time and those quiet morning hours included, this became not a “busy sightseeing trip,” but a “slow travel” kind of stay. Since it isn’t in a major tourist area, having a car is convenient—but it’s close to the airport and also worked well as a base for sightseeing spots like Sakurajima. This is an Accommodation I’d especially recommend to anyone who wants to relax in Kagoshima. We will definitely return.

Wonderful hot springs and delicious cuisine
We stayed in the detached Akiseian. It had a large open-air bath attached to the Room, and since the weather was nice, we enjoyed it many times. The hot spring water was slightly silky and felt wonderful. The food was delicious, and there was a wide variety of sake to enjoy. It seems other detached Rooms also have large private baths, so we would like to stay again in a different season.

Thank you very much.
This was my first stay, and I truly appreciated the courteous service from the warm welcome at the parking lot through to check-out—it made me feel very comfortable. Each dish was delicious, with seasoning that brought out the best in the ingredients. It really felt like “ma,” rhythm, and lingering aftertaste. The Onsen was also very relaxing, so I enjoyed it both at night and again the next morning. I was happy to find a sheet mask among the amenities. He especially liked how comfortable the pants-style yukata was. We were also able to see an impressive fireworks display that day, which became a wonderful memory. If I have the opportunity, I would love to stay again.

Highly satisfied
I wanted to treat myself with a great Accommodation, a great Onsen, and delicious meals. I had stayed here before, and the hospitality was just as wonderful as ever, and the food was delicious. I enjoyed the Onsen many times and felt truly refreshed.

We’ll definitely be back! It was a truly wonderful Ryokan.
The food was very delicious, the Onsen was wonderful, and the staff were excellent. I’d like to make my next Reservation right away. One small thing I noticed: perhaps because the in-room bath is free-flowing, there was some green moss on the edge of the cypress tub, so I would appreciate it if that could be removed. Also, the scent of air freshener on the hand towels, bath towels, and staff uniforms felt a bit too strong. Since I’m sensitive to fragrances, I felt it could detract from enjoying the meal.

Large Public Bath for One Person Only
Since there were only three groups of guests, I was able to enjoy the bath alone and relax—it was wonderful. Dinner was elaborate, with a great variety of ingredients, and everything was very delicious. Although the property felt spacious overall, the Room seemed a bit small—especially the area for taking off shoes. My husband, who has knee problems, found the low table and floor chair difficult.

The food is of high quality.
What impressed me most was the food. Everything was high quality, focused on flavor rather than just presentation. The portions were also just right. For this price, the food deserves applause. I’d like to visit again when the sauna has reopened—I’m looking forward to it.

Refine Your Senses with an Adults-Only Escape at Kagoshima’s Treasure, “Yatsuru-tei”]
Nestled in the quiet of Hinatayama Onsen, “Yakakutei” is a place to leave everyday noise behind and sink into genuine relaxation. What captures you first is the breathtaking sense of space. Sitting on iconic furniture in the lobby and gazing out at the impeccably maintained garden feels like a luxury beyond compare. The harmony of traditional sukiya-style design and refined modern taste is soothing in itself, as if simply looking on brings your mind into balance. The guest rooms are equally thoughtful, with meticulous attention to detail. In particular, the open-air bath in the room, wrapped in the warmth of wood, is exceptional. The gentle waters of Hinatayama and the soft scent of timber are deeply comforting—so much so that time seems to stand still. In this private setting, I was able to truly unwind without restraint. And then there is the dining, which far exceeded expectations. Carefully selected local ingredients are elevated into exquisite dishes through delicate craftsmanship. One standout—tender meat paired with a rich egg—was pure bliss. From seasonal appetizers to a beautifully presented strawberry dessert, each course told its own story; even the dialogue between food and tableware made it an outstanding culinary experience. The staff’s hospitality was also memorable: attentive without being intrusive, always close enough to anticipate what you might need at just the right moment. This is an Accommodation for adults who genuinely love quality, beauty, and great food—and an ideal choice for a personal reward or a special time with someone important. It reaffirmed Kagoshima’s rich culture and offered relaxation at its finest. I will definitely return in another season.

A blissful private annex where you can discover the depth of Kagoshima, filled with serenity and refined beauty
A stay at “Yakakutei,” refined by the history of Kirishima/Hyuga-yama Onsen, was a truly luxurious experience worthy of being called a “modern hideaway.” Among many renowned Accommodations, the quality of tranquility here is on another level. ■ A Beautiful Space Where Tradition and Modernity Harmonize What first captivates you is the beauty of the lobby lounge that unfolds the moment you step inside. Set against an impeccably maintained Japanese garden, the carefully selected Windsor chairs and tasteful rugs create a space where Japanese and Western styles—tradition and modernity—are in perfect harmony. Though open and airy with its grand supporting pillars, it simultaneously conveys dignified elegance that straightens your posture and a comforting sense of calm that gently embraces you. ■ Guest Rooms Designed for Ultimate Comfort and Soothing Onsen Baths The guest rooms also reflect an uncompromising aesthetic down to the smallest details. In a purely Japanese-style setting filled with the pleasant scent of tatami, modern sofas and practical Facilities are subtly arranged, making comfort throughout your stay exceptional. In particular, the open-air bath in the room was an ideal private retreat where you can enjoy Hyuga-yama’s famed Onsen all to yourself, surrounded by the warmth of wood. Time spent gazing at garden trees and listening to the wind makes you completely forget everyday bustle. ■ A Feast That Awakens the Senses And this Accommodation’s true highlight is undoubtedly its cuisine. The kaiseki course, lavishly featuring seasonal ingredients and drawing out their best qualities, makes each dish feel like a work of art. Especially memorable was one dish in which richly flavored egg complemented premium Kuroge Wagyu beef—its melt-in-your-mouth texture and deep aroma were pure bliss. From strawberry desserts to other creative touches that bring seasonal color to life, every course reflected both meticulous craftsmanship and sincere dedication from the chef. The pairing with tableware was also superb, creating a dining experience that satisfied all five senses. ■ Overall Impression The staff’s demeanor was highly polished as well; with just-right attentiveness, their hospitality came through naturally without feeling intrusive. Whether you want quiet time for yourself or meaningful conversation with someone special, there are few places better than this. It was a wonderful stay that let me truly understand why it is called Kagoshima’s guesthouse par excellence. I would love to return in another season to experience this serenity—and this cuisine—again.

The Onsen was amazing.
We stayed in a Room with a private indoor bath. We also used the large public bath, but since we had to check out early due to our schedule, the private bath was incredibly convenient and allowed us to fully enjoy the Onsen even with limited time. We really liked the water quality and would love to soak again. Not only the Room, but also the lobby interior was exactly our style—this was a wonderful Accommodation.

Yatsuru-tei
The Onsen was very clean, and the water felt soft and silky against the skin. The dishes seemed thoughtfully prepared one by one, and everything was delicious. In particular, the grilled tuna skewer served first was surprisingly meat-like in texture—both tasty and memorable.

We were completely satisfied with the Onsen, the meals, and the Accommodation.
It was my first visit in a while, and after last summer’s typhoon damage, this was my first stay since the renovation! The large public bath has a high ceiling and an airy, refreshing design with such a wonderful atmosphere it feels like even the gods could pass through. Having “Onsen Water 99” available is also a big plus for women. I stayed in the Room called Munian, which has a unique tea-room-like layout, and both the Room and the bath were truly lovely. Someday I’d love to stay here for two nights—enjoying the meals and baths to my heart’s content—and spend my days strolling around and reading nonstop.

Wonderful Accommodation
We stayed here on a girls’ trip for three, and we all love drinks and Onsen. We were very satisfied with the quality of the Onsen water!! We used it twice, at night and in the morning, and our skin felt so smooth. The meals featured plenty of seasonal ingredients, so we could really enjoy spring. They also served drinks that paired well with the food, and we almost ended up drinking too much wine and sake. Next time, we’d love to stay in a Room with a private bath!

A wonderful Ryokan that makes you want to stay again!
I stayed at Yakakutei during my trip to Kirishima. The atmosphere inside the Accommodation was very calm, and I was able to relax quietly at my own pace. The Room was clean and comfortable, and the Onsen felt wonderful and helped me recover from travel fatigue. What impressed me most was the cuisine: every kaiseki dish made with local ingredients was delicious, and beautifully presented as well. The staff were also courteous and pleasant, making this a wonderful Ryokan where I would love to stay again when visiting Kirishima.

There was major cons...
There was major construction underway, but there was no prior explanation or notice, so I was surprised upon arrival. On the day, staff only briefly mentioned that construction was in progress. (Construction workers were also coming and going frequently.) It also seemed that staffing levels were quite limited, and service was kept to a minimum. It did not feel worth the weekday price of 50,000 yen. The meals and the Onsen were excellent, and the service from the staff who assisted us was very good, which made it all the more disappointing.

Moved by the kaiseki cuisine and the Onsen.
First and foremost, the kaiseki cuisine was truly delicious! From sea bream sashimi served with Tosa soy sauce to bonito enjoyed with egg-yolk shutō, not only was the fish itself outstanding, but you could really feel the care put into every sauce and seasoning—I was impressed by each and every dish. The meat dishes were just as satisfying: a Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu steak and beef shabu-shabu, both seasoned perfectly so as not to overpower the natural flavor of the meat—every bite was impressive. Spring vegetables, rice cooked in a traditional pot, red miso soup, and dessert—everything from fish and meat to vegetables and sweets was excellent. The Onsen water had a smooth, silky quality that gently clung to the skin, and it completely washed away my everyday fatigue (in a good way). The Facility also featured a Japanese-modern design—stylish yet calming—and it felt wonderfully relaxing. This was an amazing Onsen Ryokan that I’d love to visit again after its renovation! Thank you so much to everyone at Yakakutei.

A quiet, relaxing space
I made a Reservation hoping for some quiet time to rest my mind, and the stay exceeded my expectations. Since this Accommodation is known for its Onsen, I checked in early and was able to relax at a leisurely pace. The Room was very clean and quiet... It felt thoughtfully prepared down to the smallest details. The staff were wonderfully considerate—never overly intrusive, yet naturally attentive when needed, which made me feel very comfortable. Each dish was not only beautifully presented but also delicious, and my spouse and I were able to enjoy our meal slowly together. Although the Accommodation is located in town, once you step inside it feels like another world. The garden is well maintained, and simply looking at it brings a sense of calm. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get away from everyday life and spend some peaceful time. Next time, I’d like to visit again in a different season—hopefully with my parents as well.

Completely satisfied with a relaxing stay
I stayed at Yakakutei, a place I had long wanted to try, as the perfect finale to my Kirishima sightseeing trip. Just as I’d hoped, the stylish and relaxing Room was truly soothing, and I was also very satisfied with the dinner-included Plan featuring delicious dishes made with plenty of local ingredients. Thank you so much to all the staff for your wonderful care from pick-up to send-off. I will definitely come again!

An Accommodation I Definitely Want to Visit Again
We visited as a couple to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The warm hospitality was truly soothing, the refreshing Onsen helped us feel renewed, and the delicious meals were completely satisfying! Both our hearts and bodies felt fulfilled. All the staff welcomed us with constant smiles, and their explanations were thorough, making our stay very pleasant. We will definitely come again. Thank you for a wonderful time.

High-quality hot spring water and cuisine
This was my first stay, and the onsen water had a smooth texture, which was wonderful. Although it was unfortunate that the sauna was unavailable due to flooding from last summer's heavy rain, the changing room was clean, and having onsen water available there was a nice touch. Both dinner and breakfast were served at the counter in a beautifully atmospheric space where I enjoyed a luxurious time. The portion of premium Japanese black beef was generous, and the freshly cooked white rice from the pot was sweet and fluffy. Every dish in the kaiseki course was exquisite and absolutely satisfying.

It was the best trip to Kirishima.
The best Onsen accommodation! The room and bath were very clean, and the design was beautiful. Walking anywhere inside the accommodation, you can see a Japanese garden, which is very soothing. The arrangement for private baths and their thoughtful service were excellent, allowing us to have a truly wonderful time. With outstanding Onsen accommodation and hospitality that exceeds its price, I will definitely stay here again!!

I have stayed at var...
I have stayed at various accommodations before, but honestly, this was the first time I felt so disappointed. This time, I stayed in the "Munian" room with the [Dinner and Breakfast Included: Upgraded Cuisine Plan], but overall, it did not meet my expectations. The cuisine was described as "upgraded," prepared by a chef with Michelin experience. However, it turned out to be quite ordinary without any sense of uniqueness or creativity. It lacked a handmade touch or warmth, leaving me feeling underwhelmed due to the significant gap between the description and reality. The service also felt inexperienced and did not convey the atmosphere of a prestigious ryokan at all. While the room was spacious, the futon was not properly arranged. It fell far short of delivering the neatness or cleanliness shown in photos and left an impression of carelessness. Additionally, the open-air bath was excessively hot, making it impossible to relax. Even after requesting temperature adjustment, there seemed to be no noticeable change or confirmation that action had been taken—this too was disappointing. Given how much I had been looking forward to this stay, the disparity between my expectations and reality made it an unmemorable trip.

Excellent Accommodation
From the warm welcome upon arrival to the matcha service during check-in, detailed explanations of the facilities, relaxing Onsen, beautifully presented and delicious dinner and breakfast, as well as thorough descriptions of each dish—everything was simply exceptional. This is a Ryokan I highly recommend to everyone.

It has become a wonderful Ryokan.
I used to visit frequently over a decade ago but had stopped due to a slight decline in service. This time, I stayed at Muni-an again by chance. The accommodation was renovated two years ago, and the onsen facility has become truly exceptional. What impressed me even more was the cuisine—it is undoubtedly top-class, even compared to places in Kanto or Kansai. I definitely look forward to visiting again soon.

Relax with a wonderful bath and delicious meals.
Spacious and atmospheric bath, soft water quality, meals that are satisfying both in taste and presentation, and the heartfelt care of the young staff made our one-night stay very relaxing. The private bath was also excellent. While we were generally very satisfied, it was a bit disappointing that there were no bath towels in the large public bath despite being informed otherwise. Another point for consideration during future renovations is the installation of a door at the entrance area of the Japanese-Western style room designed for 2-4 people. The current setup makes it difficult to enter or exit as there is barely enough space to remove shoes or sandals at the entrance while keeping the door open. This seems more like an issue with the construction company rather than with this accommodation itself. However, given that this is a high-quality accommodation, having an entryway design comparable to a business hotel detracts from an otherwise excellent experience. Everything else was truly wonderful, which makes these points all the more regrettable. That said, overall, this accommodation features modern Japanese-style renovations and offers a clean and comfortable environment. The young staff's earnest efforts were charming; however, we were particularly impressed by a veteran male staff member who had extensive knowledge about local sightseeing spots and engaging conversations—a true professional in Ryokan hospitality! Thank you very much!

The cuisine is exceptional.
We stayed in the main building as a family of four. The recently renovated accommodation was modern and very clean. However, it felt a bit cramped for four people, and the room lacked a bathtub. Additionally, the narrow entrance made entering and exiting slightly inconvenient, so I would rate the room 4 stars. The food was all very delicious. The chef seemed to pay great attention to aromas, allowing us to enjoy not only the appearance and taste but also the delightful fragrance when opening each dish. Both dinner and breakfast were served in just the right portions. The bath was charming with excellent water quality, though it was slightly disappointing that only the waterfall bath had water that was too hot. My family thoroughly enjoyed their stay, so we hope to try staying in one of the detached accommodations next time. Thank you!
