Onsen lovers will find it irresistible.

Kokuya Annex “Kuon,” featured in Japan Brand Selection Hotel 100 Kokuya was founded as a grain wholesaler around the time of the Battle of Sekigahara and later became a Ryokan. Established in 1600 and now run by the 16th generation, it is among the top 50 oldest companies in Japan—older than Matsuzakaya and Higeta Soy Sauce. The annex offers not only beautifully refined Rooms, but also two private open-air baths attached to the Room, plus even a sauna. And because it uses natural hot spring water (Onsen), it’s irresistible for Onsen lovers. That said, dining is arguably half of the stay experience. Unfortunately, despite expectations for professional-level craftsmanship, the cooking and seasoning did not taste good. Also, large vehicles cannot be driven up to the entrance. As this is an old Onsen town area with narrow streets, if you enter with a Land Cruiser or Lexus GX-class vehicle, it can be very difficult to get back out. I personally got stuck and needed staff guidance to leave after quite some effort. This likely applies to other Ryokan as well (except those along the river). If you plan to arrive by car, it’s best to confirm access with the Ryokan in advance.
