    It was great.

    It may not be a new Accommodation, but it seems to have been well maintained—the interior was clean, with many wonderful decorations, no carpet stains, and it was a lovely Hotel. Above all, the bath water was excellent; both the indoor bath and the open-air bath were spacious and very relaxing, so I enjoyed soaking for a long time. I had high expectations for the tagged crab in the meals, but aside from the grilled crab it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. The beef was delicious, though. The only downside was that the bathroom floor in the guest room had vinyl flooring and felt cold. Even without crab, I’d like to come back in a colder season on a reasonably priced Plan to enjoy those baths again.

    The in-room open-air Onsen bath was amazing!

    I travel around looking for places with an in-room Onsen bath above all else. I’ve often been disappointed—some open-air baths weren’t actually Onsen, some were so lukewarm I caught a cold, and others were just too small. It’s been hard to find a real winner. On the website, the large public open-air bath looked great, and the in-room open-air bath didn’t seem like much—but.... The in-room open-air Onsen bath was amazing!

    The stone bathtub is amazing.

    Six of us (three men and three women) stayed this time, and everyone left very satisfied. In particular, the stone-coffin open-air bath was perfect—the temperature, size, and comfort were all excellent, and soaking slowly warmed us to the core. The open-air bath was well maintained and relaxing; I went in many times, thinking it would be even better if light powdery snow were falling. The meal was themed around Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day), with thoughtful presentation and creative dishes. There was a wide variety of food plus one whole crab, and everything was delicious—we were completely full. The only slight disappointment was that the crab was frozen, so the texture wasn’t quite as good; however, considering the price, we were more than satisfied with the meal. The staff at Asanoya were attentive, and housekeeping/cleanliness were well managed throughout. Thank you as well for waving goodbye until we were out of sight.

    Ooyuki Onsen Ryokan

    I chose this Ryokan for the first time because of its good reviews. When we arrived in front of the Ryokan by car, a staff member driving a bus immediately noticed us and guided us. Truly impressive service typical of a Japanese Ryokan. The welcome drink, matcha, and sweets were delightful. However, it was slightly disappointing that there was no guidance to our room afterward. The room was spacious enough for four people, with two sinks and two toilets, making our stay very comfortable. However, the cleaning seemed a bit careless as there were crumbs on the tea box stand and some debris on the futon. Additionally, it felt like the private bath in the room wasn’t cleaned thoroughly since it might not be intended for regular use. The meals showcased seasonal touches with meticulous care from the head chef. The inclusion of tagged crab was a highlight; we enjoyed every bite to our heart's content. It would have been even better if there had been more attentive explanations from the server during mealtime. The Onsen water quality was excellent; my skin and hair felt silky smooth after bathing—very satisfying! Unfortunately, due to heavy snow that day, I couldn’t enjoy the outdoor bath which left me slightly disappointed. Despite heavy snowfall early in the morning, all staff members worked hard to clear snow—a truly commendable effort! They even cleaned off our car so we could depart smoothly despite continuous snowfall—I am deeply grateful for their kindness and dedication.

    The service is doing its best.

    The service was commendable. The welcome tea and snacks, car arrangements, and staff attentiveness during meals were good. However, the overall facility feels outdated. Many of the staff during meals seemed elderly and were unable to handle drink orders efficiently. The bath was pleasantly hot with an overflow system, making it enjoyable, but the strong chlorine smell raised concerns about its maintenance frequency. Children's meals were identical to adults', leaving limited options for them to eat comfortably, which was a bit inconvenient. Overall, the outdated facilities and disappointing meals stood out as negatives. Apologies for pointing out so many issues!

    The meals and bath were excellent, but the neighboring room was...

    Stayed at the accommodation during New Year's and enjoyed a special Kaiseki meal. Due to snowy conditions, we opted for a rental car instead of our own with regular tires. Upon arrival in the hail, a staff member kindly held an umbrella as we exited the car. After exploring the nearby Arayu hot spring, we headed straight to the large public bath. The open-air bath was spacious, allowing us to relax while enjoying the snowy scenery. The low-temperature sauna utilizing geothermal heat left us feeling refreshed both physically and mentally. Dinner featured the aforementioned special Kaiseki meal with beautifully crafted dishes that were truly impressive. We indulged in local crab and Tajima beef, along with a small pot dish containing grouper—an abundant feast. The room was a 12-tatami mat Japanese-style room adorned with fresh flowers, which was lovely; however, noise from neighboring families disrupted our stay. Children were jumping on beds in their Japanese-Western style room and running around until past 10 PM—a clear breach of manners that made it unpleasant for us. Additionally, sounds such as opening and closing toilet doors echoed due to the building's structure, which was somewhat disappointing. While I appreciate traditional ryokan charm despite its age, repeated disturbances like this make one reconsider its appeal.

    Very satisfied again.

    This was my fourth stay, and once again, it exceeded my expectations. The meals, with crab as the main feature, were flawless and absolutely delicious. The hostess even came to greet us during dinner, and the thoughtful hospitality of all the staff was heartwarming. In every aspect, you could feel the warmth of their personal touch.

    Year-End and New Year Accommodation (Yukomori) Multiple Night Stay on the 31st and 1st

    I was able to relax very well. I used the Onsen many times, and my lower back pain improved, so I was very satisfied. However, I was a bit surprised that there was no handwashing sink in the toilet. It was a shame that the weather was bad on both days and I couldn’t stroll around town. The room was nice, but I felt the amenities were insufficient; considering it cost over 100,000 yen per night, it still felt lacking. At checkout, there was heavy snowfall and the staff worked hard shoveling snow so we could leave smoothly. I really appreciated it. Thank you very much.

    For the price

    It was not bad, but it didn't feel particularly exceptional. The food was more ordinary than expected. Compared to other places that often have well-stocked refrigerators, this one only had water and champagne. For the private open-air bath, adding an upper screen for privacy would make it more comfortable, especially for women.

    The Onsen was excellent.

    There were no tissues in the bathroom, which was inconvenient. The toothpaste was old and dried out, making it unusable. The staff's timing for greetings was not ideal. I wanted to enjoy a lot of crab, but it felt insufficient.

    Traditional Onsen

    We visited Yumura Onsen with our family after discovering it on IKYU.com. It took about 3 hours by car from Kobe. We arrived at the accommodation while enjoying the slightly autumn-colored mountain roads. The car was handed over with the key at the entrance and returned after parking. After checking in, we barely made it in time for the welcome matcha service available until 5 PM. As it started to get dark, we quickly went out for a walk. Just a short staircase down from Asanoya Ryokan, there were hot spring sources and foot baths where we could boil eggs purchased nearby. The riverside foot bath had a great atmosphere and was very relaxing. With streetlights starting to illuminate, the nostalgic ambiance of the onsen town enhanced our travel experience. Back at the accommodation, we headed straight to the large public bath area first. The changing room, indoor bath, and open-air bath were all spacious and allowed us to relax comfortably. The deep bathtubs submerged your face when seated, and soaking in them left our skin feeling smooth and refreshed. Both breakfast and dinner were served in private rooms. Although one elderly staff member seemed overwhelmed managing multiple rooms alone, they did their best to serve us attentively. While ingredients like crab, beef, and rice were of high quality overall, there was no sense of luxury or uniqueness throughout any course from appetizers to dessert during dinner service—especially disappointing was tempura with thick batter so hard that identifying its contents became impossible; it might have been better not served at all! Breakfast also lacked variety; many dishes arrived cold which felt subpar compared even among ryokans' standards. The room itself offered ample space along with two toilets but showed signs of aging infrastructure—air conditioning caused noticeable vibrations resembling earthquakes waking us several times overnight—and stink bugs flying around disrupted sleep further despite calling staff per instructions provided earlier who responded indifferently before handing over duct tape suggesting DIY removal methods instead (ultimately resolved using creativity). While such occurrences may be unavoidable occasionally within older buildings located amidst nature-rich environments like these settings entail additional effort-consuming moments detracting restful     It exceeded expectations.

    The reviews were already great, so I had high expectations, but it exceeded them. First of all, the room was spacious and clean! I chose a room with an open-air bath, and just the hallway connecting the two rooms from the entrance was 7 tatami mats in size. In addition to the open-air bath, there was also a private indoor bath in the room. Two sets of towels were provided along with bathrobes. The amenities were well-stocked, and for tea lovers, there were three types of tea available: roasted green tea (Hojicha), green tea (Sencha), and brown rice tea (Genmaicha). There was even a massage chair in the room. Meals were served in private dining rooms with attentive service. The dishes were elaborate and visually delightful; during breakfast, they even performed a live demonstration of making rolled omelets right before our eyes—it was exciting! Seasonal decorations included handwritten tanzaku cards or drawings by the owner, fragrant bookmarks as gifts, and traffic safety charms for cars—all these thoughtful touches made me feel truly welcomed throughout my stay. From mid-November to early spring, you can enjoy crab dishes here—I definitely want to visit again during that time! However, since this is a snowy region during winter months, it's important to ensure your car is properly equipped if visiting then.

    I visited with my elderly mother and stayed in a Japanese-style room with an open-air Onsen bath, choosing the Kasumi Crab Feast Plan. The accommodation has a slightly dated feel but is overall very nice. Surprisingly, unlike many accommodations, the outdoor bath in the large public bath area has a roof at the back, so light rain is not an issue. It was raining that day, but it added to the atmosphere. After bathing, there was a complimentary green tea service. It felt refreshing for my body after drying out from the bath—green tea... nostalgic... We chose a room with an open-air Onsen bath; however, there were no amenities like shampoo provided at this bath. The unit bathroom was located separately within the room area, so if you wanted to wash your body properly, you had to leave the open-air Onsen bath after drying off and move through your guestroom to reach it—a bit inconvenient. The window of the open-air Onsen seemed to have insect screens installed for protection against bugs; however, this completely blocked any view outside—somewhat disappointing. At dinner time, there was no self-introduction from staff serving us nor any explanation of menus or dishes provided. Conversations felt sharp and unpleasantly pointed at times. I found it extremely uncomfortable and stopped eating halfway through dinner as I sensed ill intent... Such a waste of Kasumi crab… My apologies go out sincerely towards both fishermen & chefs involved. Later on while browsing online reviews casually afterward—I came across mentions about issuing receipts even for gratuities given here—and realized perhaps lack thereof might explain odd treatment during meals earlier? To clarify importantly though: aside from strange dining experience mentioned above everything else about stay itself remained satisfactory overall! Hope sharing these insights proves helpful reference point others considering similar stays ahead! Reminds me nostalgically how common such Ryokans were back during peak bus tour era around 1990s too!

The quality of the Onsen was exceptional, and soaking in the open-air bath amidst the crisp early morning air was pure bliss.     I had a relaxing time.

    It was excellent!

    A traditional and charming accommodation. The open-air bath allows you to fully enjoy the natural hot spring, and the large public bath is also excellent! I was thrilled to receive a complimentary draft beer after bathing (seems to be time-limited). The meals were meticulously prepared, showcasing the chef's dedication. Needless to say, they were delicious! On departure, many staff members came out to see us off. This time we visited in summer, but next time we’d love to come during a light snowfall season for a different experience!

    The interval between dinner courses is too long.

    When I stayed at the accommodation a year ago, everything was fine, but this time, I couldn't help but wonder, "What happened?" Meals and the onsen are important highlights of the stay. However, this time, the intervals between each dish during dinner were so long. The gaps were so lengthy that we ran out of conversation and ended up turning on the TV while waiting for food to be served. I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. When the tempura finally arrived, I expected it to be hot and crispy, but it was cold and more like fritters than proper tempura. There wasn't a single dish that tasted good. What happened? The hostess greeted us in her kimono and saw us off with great care—I truly appreciated her hospitality—but when meals fall short of expectations, it brings down everything else about the experience.

    This was my first stay at the accommodation.

    I have visited Yumura Onsen many times, but this was my first stay here. I truly appreciated the thoughtful care provided. The facility has an older charm but is well-maintained and kept very clean. The meals were delicious, and I enjoyed hearing about the chef's dedication to each dish—it all felt so handmade! The onsen water was smooth and relaxing, allowing me to soak in comfort. Lastly, finding a folded paper crane on my car after checking out warmed my heart. Thank you very much!

    The best Ryokan in recent years.

    I stayed with my husband. This was the most satisfying ryokan I have visited in recent years. The building is indeed old, but the room was very clean and well-maintained, as was the bath. The remnants of a traditional ryokan can be seen in the furnishings and throughout the facility, which added a sense of luxury. Of course, both the service and meals were excellent. It’s an accommodation that makes you want to come back again!

    Feelings That Engage All Five Senses

    I chose Asanoya for my first visit to Yumura Onsen, which I had been curious about for a long time. It was a precious experience staying at this historical accommodation, where every detail reflected thoughtful care. The seasonal dishes prepared by the head chef were crafted with meticulous attention and no shortcuts. The open-air bath overlooking the trees was delightful, and I was impressed by the wooden bucket sounds in the washing area and the water pressure of the showers. From being warmly welcomed to being seen off by all staff, every aspect of this trip showed dedication to detail. Although there was a slight disappointment with souvenirs at the end of our journey, I would love to return here again to experience each season with all my senses. Thanks to a kind attendant who shared that she has a daughter our age, it became an especially memorable and comfortable trip for us. We will visit again with my parents next time—thank you very much!

    We visited with a family of nine. Unlike many Onsen Hotels that offer buffets, here you can enjoy delicious meals leisurely in your room. This was the point everyone agreed on as being very satisfying. The Onsen was pleasant, but for my mother in her 80s, the long stairs to access the bath were burdensome. Since we came looking forward to enjoying the Onsen, it was quite disappointing. Is there any way to address this? Without this issue, she mentioned wanting to visit repeatedly.

    Stayed with a pet.

    We stayed in a plan that allowed us to stay in the same room with our pet, and thanks to the thoughtful care of the hostess and staff, we had a very comfortable stay. Pets were also allowed during meals (in private rooms), so we could enjoy our time without being separated from our pet. Both dinner and breakfast featured plenty of seasonal and local ingredients (including those from the accommodation's own forest), and they were absolutely delicious. It was our first time visiting Yumura Onsen, but we enjoyed not only the onsen at the accommodation but also the charming streets of this onsen town. (The temperature of the onsen water is very high, especially near Arayu where geothermal heat is intense, so please be cautious if you are bringing pets.) Thanks to all the staff members, it was a great refreshment for us. We would love to visit again with our pet!

    Friendly hostess.

    Stayed with four friends and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed both breakfast and dinner leisurely in the room. The dishes were creatively presented, adorable, and incredibly delicious—truly impressive. The staff handling the meals were friendly, efficient, and very pleasant. The hostess who came to greet us was cheerful, fun, and made us laugh a lot. We were also impressed by the kind and beautiful paintings by the owner—warm and heartwarming artwork. The Onsen was spacious and allowed for a relaxing experience. The room was large, well-cleaned, and comfortable. During our send-off, everyone saw us off warmly; we even took fun photos with the lively hostess while laughing together! It truly was a wonderful accommodation filled with joy. Thank you very much!
