I didn’t realize the...
I didn’t realize there was a Ryokan tucked away behind the central sightseeing area of Amanohashidate. Because it is set back, the grounds were quiet despite being in a tourist spot, and I could hear birdsong and the sound of the waves. The building has been renovated, and the Room amenities were up to date; the bath was also very clean. The Onsen in the large public bath isn’t big, but it was comfortable because I didn’t run into anyone, and it was nice to be able to enjoy coffee after bathing. The meals were generous enough to satisfy even someone with a big appetite like me, and everything tasted great. For breakfast, a chef came to our private dining room and cooked dashimaki right in front of us—it was a wonderful surprise. The Nepalese staff member explained the many ingredients in Japanese, and their service was polite and pleasant. I would love to stay again.

Summer get-together
I came to take refuge from the intense heat. As always, the delicious meals and the gentle hot spring water soothed my summer-weary body, and I was able to head home feeling refreshed both physically and mentally. One small disappointment was that the breakfast flounder had been replaced with black cod. It may just be me, but in the morning I find a lighter fish easier to eat than something rich and fatty. I was also disappointed not to see the dashimaki tamago performance. That said, I had a wonderful two days overall—thank you very much.

Thanks to you, we had a wonderful trip.
This was my first time visiting Amanohashidate, and thanks to all the staff, I had a truly wonderful stay. The Room—including the semi-open-air bath, comfortable changing area, spacious Japanese-style room, living area, and bedroom—was spotless and could not have been better. Everyone on the staff was kind and approachable. The meals were also excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a private dining room with an ocean view, where we could relax and enjoy the sunset and evening atmosphere, as well as the sunrise in the morning. Every dish was carefully prepared, with gentle seasoning that we really appreciated. If there is one point for improvement, it would be that the bath water temperature felt a bit lukewarm. For the open-air bath in the Room, it would have been nice to be able to adjust the temperature. If I simply missed an operation panel, I apologize. I would love to visit again if I have the chance. Thank you very much.

It was wonderful.
This had been an Accommodation I’d admired for a long time. The exterior has a charming, traditional feel, while the Room was spotless and fully equipped with modern amenities. The meals were thoughtfully prepared—delicious, of course, and beautifully presented. Having a private dining room was also a plus. The large public bath was clean whenever I went, never crowded, and well stocked with amenities. There were some international guests as well, and they seemed impressed by how beautiful everything was. I also had a small request, and they responded right away, which was very helpful. The service was pleasant throughout, and I hope to visit again. *If you’re driving: once you get close to the Accommodation, the sightseeing boat pier is nearby so there are many tourists around, and the road felt a bit narrow.*

A Beautiful Single-Story Accommodation
The sukiya-style Room was beautifully appointed, and the view from the Room was wonderful. The bath overlooking the sea was also very comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with gentle, comforting flavors. I ordered charcoal-grilled abalone, which may have been extra work, but it was prepared with great care. The tableware was elegant and a pleasure to admire as well. The Shuttle Service staff were also very kind, making this an unforgettable stay. Thank you very much.

I’d like to stay in another Room as well.
Last time, the two of us stayed in “Kumoi.” This time, the three of us stayed in “Amano Yukyu,” and it was spacious enough. We relaxed while enjoying the view of the Aso Sea from our Room. As we walked around the Accommodation, we found ourselves wondering what the other Rooms were like. Just as before, we truly appreciated the warm hospitality from all of the staff. Since we know that with a Multiple Night Stay, they put even more effort into dinner on the second night, we were reminded that next time we’d like to stay multiple nights rather than rushing like this time. So yes—this is an Accommodation made for a Multiple Night Stay. We’ll be back again. Thank you very much.

Amazing!
We stayed in two Rooms with three generations of our family. Both dinner and breakfast were elegant and very delicious, in true Kyoto style. The breakfast felt a little salty. The Rooms were simple, and the corridors and garden were wonderful. We would love to visit again if we have the chance.

Crab
Lately, I feel like we’ve been coming here every year to eat crab. It seems my father really likes this place—he even asks in summer, “Hey! Did you make the Reservation there?!” He’s way too early. Actually, he asked me just now—before summer. Right now. It’s still May! Too early, too early. So at his request I checked this Accommodation, and wow—you can make a Reservation all the way through next March. That’s impressively early. But there’s no crab course listed. When will Reservations for the crab course open? For now, should I just reserve the Room? Can I switch to a crab plan later? While I was wondering what to do, I realized I hadn’t written a Review yet—so here it is: This is a great Accommodation.

Exceptional hospitality
We stayed here as a group of three with my elderly parents while sightseeing in Amanohashidate. From our Room, we could see Amanohashidate beyond a beautifully maintained Japanese garden—an exceptional and truly luxurious setting. With delicious meals, a relaxing Onsen, and the thoughtful care of the staff, we felt genuine hospitality in every detail throughout our stay. During our visit, my father, who has mild dementia, went missing for a short time and caused trouble; thanks to your help, we were able to return home safely. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

Comparison
I stayed here once about 10 years ago. I remember it as a calm Accommodation with wonderful furnishings. This was my second visit after the renovation, and I stayed in the same room, Kumoi. The baths, including the open-air bath, had improved. The room was spacious, but it felt a bit less substantial than before. The meals were somewhat disappointing for the price. I usually book directly with the Accommodation, but this time I made a Reservation through IKYU for the first time and it was about 10,000 yen cheaper per person. If you book through IKYU, does the meal plan differ slightly from what is shown on your website?

Aside from Amanohashidate’s location and scenery, I felt it wasn’t worth the price.
The Accommodation’s location and the view from the Room were wonderful. However, that alone did not make the stay feel worth the price, for the following reasons: - At check-in after 3:00 p.m., tea and sweets were served in the lounge, but the cups and plates were not cleared away until around 5:00 p.m., after my bath. - When making my Reservation, I could only choose the “Basic” Plan, and I found the quality of ingredients at dinner underwhelming. Meanwhile, a different menu was being delivered to a neighboring Room. If other dining Plans were available, it would have been helpful to be informed when I called in advance. - When leaving, a male staff member at reception carried my luggage to my car, but he briefly looked exhausted until the car pulled away. It did not feel like service that ends on a positive note.

The sea, pine trees, and a lush green garden—relax at your leisure.
From our calm, single-story Room, we enjoyed views of the pine trees of Amanohashidate and had an excellent Japanese set meal in the dining area. The fish dishes were especially delicious, including deep-fried scorpionfish and grilled flounder. It was a truly memorable day.

Top-notch service
We stayed in the Kumoi Room again this time. The Room, garden, bath, furniture, amenities, and in-room drinks were all exactly as expected—excellent. However, there were a few things that made us pause. When we arrived by car, there was no greeting and we had to call out at the entrance. The dining room was different from before. The optional live demonstration was no longer offered. We weren’t fully satisfied with the crab we had been looking forward to. We understand staffing shortages and rising costs, but some delays during the meal stood out. During the signature kuzukiri service, we were also distracted by dish clearing happening nearby. Because what makes Kumoi special is that both the Room and the dining experience carry equal weight, this stay felt a bit unsatisfying overall. These are only personal impressions—just minor requests if I may—and I have no other intention than to be helpful as feedback; there is no need to post this on your site. Thank you for always allowing us to enjoy such an indulgent adult getaway. We would like to express our sincere gratitude again to everyone who took care of us.

We really enjoyed our stay!
Thank you very much for your truly attentive service. This is meant only as a “happy complaint,” but the portions were a bit large for older guests—though of course everything was delicious, so it was a little too much for us... (wry smile) The location is also wonderful, and we highly recommend this place.

Crab so delicious you’ll want to walk sideways.
We were welcomed back with a warm “Welcome home!”, and it was as comfortable as ever. The crab we tried for the first time was incredibly fresh, not salty at all, and even though it was large, we finished it easily. The next day we headed out saying, “See you later!”, so we’ll be back again.

Thank you very much.
Before departure, I called about the Shuttle Service, and the staff member responded very kindly. I was worried about the heavy snow, but they also shared local updates, which reassured me. The Room was spacious, and the garden in front was lovely. It was cold and there was still snow on the ground, but I kept alternating between enjoying the bath and taking walks in the garden. Kumoi was truly quiet and relaxing. The staff member who assisted us during meals also kindly helped with the setup and explained each dish; their gentle expression left a strong impression. The food was delicious, and the portion size was just right. Next time I would like to visit in a different season, but I still think Kumoi is the best Room for me. Thank you very much.

New Year Travel
It was an excellent experience. The serene Japanese-style room and the snow-covered garden were beautiful. The underfloor heating was very comfortable and left a lasting impression. The meals were delicious, with beautifully arranged presentations. The staff provided pleasant and attentive service. This is one of the Ryokans I would love to visit again. If I had to mention one minor issue, it would be that while the food was incredibly tasty, the portions were slightly too large for us.

New Experience
The New Year's atmosphere was still present everywhere, making us feel festive once again. The Room was a special suite for the first time, providing an even more comfortable experience. We had informed you about my mother's leg condition, and we truly appreciated the thoughtful gesture of having a chair prepared in the large bath area. Thank you always for your kind hospitality and care.

My first visit to Amanohashidate!!
We stayed here for one night in Amanohashidate, as we planned to enjoy snow crab at another Onsen Ryokan the next day. The hospitality from the staff was wonderful, and although we chose the standard meal plan, everything was delicious. The only disappointment was that the futon mattress was quite firm and not very comfortable to sleep on. It was our first time in Amanohashidate, and we made some great memories. Thank you!

The garden was beautiful.
I visited this Ryokan for the first time based on a recommendation from a friend. The narrow road leading to the Ryokan's parking lot felt like a pedestrian zone due to visitors to Chionji Temple and the sightseeing boat dock, making driving quite nerve-wracking. The Room was very calming in design, allowing me to relax by strolling through the well-maintained garden or sitting on the chair in the room's earthen floor area while admiring autumn leaves. The public bath was cozy and felt like a private bath, which I enjoyed. However, I found it inconvenient that there were no handrails in the open-air bath tub. Although there was an alternating schedule for men and women in the public baths during mornings, I ended up using only my Room’s open-air bath afterward. The private Room bath was spacious and equipped with a Mirable showerhead that left my skin feeling smooth and refreshed. However, while it seemed fine at night when it was dark, I noticed severe mold around the showerhead and washing area in daylight, which made me uncomfortable enough to use only the rain shower after that point. It was disappointing since everything else seemed so well-maintained. As for meals, they were plentiful; even leftover crab we couldn’t finish at dinner was kindly brought to our Room as a late-night snack. The trainee attendant from Nepal provided excellent service by adding extra cushions when chairs became uncomfortable during meals—her kindness truly stood out!

An Accommodation You'll Truly Want to Visit Again
We enjoyed the serene atmosphere of Kumoi. We had a special experience making matcha in the tea room, immersing ourselves in the traditional Japanese ambiance, and strolling through the beautiful garden with its moss and stepping stones. The library offered books with great taste, and the souvenir corner featured charming items. The onsen bath was very clean and comfortable to use, and we loved the quality of the hot spring water. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptionally delicious. The staff who guided us to our room and served our meals provided warm smiles and gentle hospitality, making our stay truly pleasant. It has been a long time since we encountered such an accommodation that makes us genuinely want to return again.

Aim to become a regular at Kumoi.
As the mornings and evenings in Kansai finally became cooler, the Sea of Japan already carried an autumnal atmosphere, and the garden at Matsushirotei showed hints of red in its autumn leaves. Once again, I stayed in the "Kumoi" room, which I had enjoyed after its spring renovation. Completely captivated by this room, I have decided that whenever I stay here, it must be Kumoi. In fact, I've already made a reservation for crab season next time. This time, to fully enjoy the charm of the room, I prepared dried seafood from a nearby shop to pair with local craft beer provided in the room. The private semi-open-air bath was perfectly tempered and allowed me to relax both body and mind. Strolling through the spacious private garden was also a soothing experience before leisurely awaiting dinner. Dinner was an absolute delight featuring seasonal flavors like matsutake mushrooms and sweet potatoes alongside an abundance of seafood dishes. Unexpectedly included were wagyu beef sushi prepared by the head chef—an exquisite surprise not listed on the menu. While my previous visit focused on enjoying Kumoi's thoughtful renovation details, this stay allowed me to truly appreciate its inherent charm. It seems I've completely fallen for Kumoi's allure and am now determined to become a regular guest there!

The accommodation is...
The accommodation is located further back from Chionji Temple, which made it difficult to find. Perhaps others might also get lost? It would be helpful to have clearer signs or display guidance on the reservation page. Upon arrival at the accommodation, we were offered warm towels and tea, but as it was a hot day, cold towels and tea would have been more appreciated. The room was newly renovated, very clean and spacious. The garden and sea view from the room were charming, as were the beautifully arranged flowers—thank you for providing such a lovely room. However, the stone wall in front of the room seemed accessible to the public (understandable since it's not private property), and a few people passed by. This made it difficult to enjoy an open-curtain bath, which was slightly disappointing. Meals were served in a private dining area with a beautiful ocean view; however, side-by-side seating arrangements would have been preferable. When serving dishes, staff entered silently without saying "Excuse me," which could be improved for better hospitality. Unfortunately, I found that some of the meals did not suit my taste this time—the grilled fish felt dry; I wished for more variety or creativity with condiments for hamo hot pot; corn rice seemed buttery; and dessert fruits appeared simply cut on large plates without much presentation effort—they tasted bland with little sweetness. For breakfast: The dashimaki tamago lacked depth in flavor from dashi stock; coffee came with commercial creamer sticks & sugar packets—these gave off an inexpensive impression compared against fresh milk served properly alongside sugar containers instead. Staff members at this accommodation left kind-hearted impressions overall but adding refinement could elevate experiences further! Apologies if overly candid feedback here reflects personal opinions only—it’s written sincerely based upon observations during our stay! Thank you again kindly hosting us!

It was a great summer vacation.
After visiting a grave in Kyoto, we extended our trip to Tango again this year. Despite the rainy weather, we enjoyed strolling around Amanohashidate, indulging in delicious cuisine, and relaxing in the Onsen, which refreshed both of us. We are grateful to the staff at the accommodation for their hospitality. Thank you for taking care of us. We also visited Chionji Temple to pay our respects and bought the famous Chie no Mochi as a souvenir before heading home.

Completely satisfied with the long-awaited accommodation
I have stayed at Matsurotei several times in the past, but this time I had the pleasure of staying with my wife in the long-awaited special room "Kumoi." Everything about the accommodation—room, meals, bath, and hospitality—was satisfying. I hope to visit again during spring or autumn. The warm conversation with the Nepalese staff member also became a memorable part of our trip. It was a wonderful journey where we felt both the unchanging traditions that should be preserved and the operational changes necessary to adapt to societal shifts. Thank you very much. Dhanyabad (Nepalese for "thank you," as taught by her).

A one-of-a-kind location with stunning views
Located in the prime location of Monju-do Cape at Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, you can enjoy a view of Amanohashidate over the Japanese garden from your accommodation room. Away from the hustle and bustle of tourist areas, this accommodation offers a serene retreat for adults to spend luxurious and relaxing moments. Thank you for your hospitality.

An Upgrade Beyond Expectations
After two years, I returned to this accommodation. Last time, it had a nostalgic Showa-era charm before its renovation, but this time I visited with excitement to see the changes. Since my goal was to fully enjoy the accommodation, I checked in without much sightseeing. The waiting area remained a scenic room where I enjoyed sweets and matcha before heading to my room. First, I was amazed by its spaciousness—a tatami living room surrounded by earthen floors and a private large garden outside. The attached living area featured a sofa and table for four people to relax comfortably, along with an adjacent double bedroom. However, the highlight was the semi-open-air bath as large as one guestroom itself—complete with an ultrasonic bubble tub offering stunning views. Every aspect of the renovation impressed me deeply. The service added even more delight: a capsule coffee maker in the room with carefully selected brands; everything in the refrigerator free of charge so you could enjoy beer after bathing even during daytime; thoughtful amenities like nail clippers and sewing kits; and what surprised me most—a five-blade razor for shaving! Towels were from Imabari, complemented by bathrobes, pajamas, and yukata for ultimate relaxation throughout the day. Of course, my favorite part was still their luxurious meals. Although dining moved from in-room service last time to another private space now—the taste remained exceptional! A special moment came when their head chef personally prepared A5 Wakasa beef sushi right before me—an off-menu treat that left me awestruck both in flavor and hospitality—especially topped with fresh sea urchin which was exquisite. Even breakfast brought new surprises like freshly made thick omelets cooked right before us—a service not available during my previous stay—and it moved me so much that I immediately made another reservation on-site for next time! With its new charms enhanced further at Shorotei’s special suite "Kumoi," this experience made me want to become a regular guest here!

It's quiet and nice here, isn't it?
In November, every year without fail, my father, who loves crabs dearly, gets excited and says, "It's crab season! Crab! The crab season is near!" He always asks, "Hey! Have you made a reservation at ○○ yet?" and even in summer he checks by asking, "Have you made the crab reservation?" One of his favorite properties is here. He's too early. It's still hot with lingering summer heat or even sweltering heat when he's checking reservations for the king of winter flavors. But that's how much he loves this place. Well actually, there's nothing to complain about here. Not only are the crabs delicious but other seasonal dishes are also great. The only downside here is that the room bath isn't an onsen; otherwise there's nothing to criticize.
