    Overall, I am very satisfied.

    A friend who stayed on a different date recommended this Accommodation, so I chose it. And I feel it’s an Accommodation I would recommend to another friend as well. The Room and the in-room bath were worth the price—if not better—and very satisfying. The meals served in a semi-private setting were also more than satisfactory. All the staff, including those who served us and those who guided us to the Room, were polite and left a great impression. Compared with other Hotels of the same type, the complimentary drinks in the refrigerator and the food and beverages in the lounge may be more extensive elsewhere, but those places are priced accordingly; considering this rate, it felt reasonable and I have no complaints. As other Reviews mention, I think some may find the large public bath water temperature a bit low. Preferences will vary. Overall, I’m completely satisfied! I’d love to stay again someday.

    It was very relaxing.

    Although it was the rainy season and we were concerned about the weather, we had good weather and enjoyed a comfortable one-night stay thanks to the excellent hospitality throughout the property. The meals were also delicious, with well-crafted creative dishes. We felt this is a Ryokan we would like to visit again in a different season.

    A Highly Satisfying Accommodation

    We stayed for our once-a-year family trip. We chose this Accommodation because we wanted a wonderful place for a private family getaway—something we can truly enjoy only while our children are still single. The guest room and bath, the hospitality, and the furnishings were all outstanding. Since there were fewer guests due to the weather, we were able to use the large public bath and lounge spaciously and freely, and we could relax from the bottom of our hearts. The meals were top-class as well, with plenty of local ingredients used from appetizers to the main course. It was our first time sightseeing in Nikko, and you helped make it a wonderful memory. Thank you very much. I believe a trip’s impression is decided by the Accommodation. If you’re unsure which Accommodation to choose, you can’t go wrong with this one.

    A relaxing Accommodation!

    I visited Kinugawa Onsen for the first time in decades. This time, I stayed to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. As soon as we arrived, three staff members warmly welcomed us, and I immediately felt this was a wonderful Accommodation. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious. The semi-open-air bath was amazing! My girlfriend was also very satisfied with the aroma massage treatment. Although we’re usually busy and don’t have much time to relax, we were able to spend a peaceful time at Bettei Sasaoto, and it turned into a birthday celebration that made both of us truly happy. Thank you very much—my intuition was right (laughs).

    Disappointing meals for an Onsen Ryokan...

    The Room size and view, as well as the spacious free-flowing hot spring bath, were great in terms of the Facility, but it was disappointing that both dinner and breakfast were underwhelming. Breakfast in particular was unsatisfying—the rice served in the wooden tub looked and felt like it had been reheated, and the side dishes tasted like simple home-style seasoning without much dashi flavor. The Room was spacious, clean, and convenient to use, but since it was a Japanese-style room, the bedding felt like just a single thin mattress pad, so it wasn’t very comfortable to sleep on. Both the in-room bath and the large public bath (which did not seem to be free-flowing) were good.

    A relaxing accommodation with a wonderful open-air bath

    I stayed on May 21. What surprised me first was being greeted the moment we arrived by car. These days, many Ryokan skip that kind of effort, so it really impressed me. From check-in to entering the Room, the staff’s wonderful and attentive hospitality made me truly happy. The semi-open-air bath in the Room that I had been looking forward to was just as amazing as I imagined. The water felt great, and because it retains heat well, it warmed me through and helped me relax. Both dinner and breakfast were completely satisfying in taste and portion size. I was also captivated by the beautiful tableware used throughout. The only disappointing thing—though I understand it may be due to age—was that part of the wooden lattice between the semi-open-air bath and the balcony had rotted and wouldn’t move. I hope it will be repaired as soon as possible. Even so, I sincerely hope to stay again if I have the chance. The send-off at departure moved me to tears. Thank you very much.

    We stayed here at the end of this holiday period. We were delighted with the in-room Onsen, the beautiful view of fresh greenery and the mountain stream from the balcony, the heartfelt meals, and above all, the attentive hospitality.     We had a wonderful and relaxing stay.

    I stayed here with my 102-year-old grandmother. The bamboo grove was beautiful, and we were amazed by the entrance designed like a Japanese garden. We were also able to borrow a wheelchair for the entire day, which was a great help. Every dish was delicious—so much so that my grandmother finished everything! I would like to thank the head chef for providing such memorable cuisine. The Room felt a bit dated, but all the staff were attentive and kind, and we truly appreciate being able to enjoy such a pleasant stay. This is an Accommodation I would highly recommend to everyone.

    We were very satisfied.

    This was my first time staying here. I made a Reservation because the Reviews were good, and after actually staying, I was very satisfied. Both the in-room open-air bath and the meals were excellent. If I had to mention anything, I would appreciate it if the complimentary drink service could be available until a bit later, and if checkout could be extended to 11:00. I will definitely stay again.

    Relax and unwind on your own.

    Whenever I feel like going to an Onsen by myself, Sasaoto comes to mind. I was able to relax and take my time again this visit. The meal was the “Yayoi Gozen” set menu, and it was truly delicious—full of the flavors of spring. I will visit again.

    Just a little more.

    The bed is small, there is no TV in the bedroom, and the floor chair in the Room is hard and not comfortable. There is only one yukata provided as loungewear. The meals were fairly good. The Onsen was excellent.

    We stayed here for a birthday trip.

    The bath in the Room was spacious and helped us relax, and since our meals were served in a private dining Room, we were able to spend a quiet, unhurried time together, which was wonderful. The staff were also excellent—friendly and courteous—and they even arranged a taxi for us when we left. It was a truly great trip; thank you very much!

    We stayed for a multiple night stay as a couple at the beginning of the year. The room was not very spacious but sufficient for two people. The semi-open-air bath attached to the room was wide enough to stretch our legs, and the lukewarm water made it perfect for a long soak. I often used the main building's large public Onsen, which had slightly hotter water that warmed me up to my core—just how I like it. The meals offered a variety of dishes with moderate portions, making them just right. Although many of the staff were non-Japanese, communication was smooth, and their polite service left a positive impression. One minor point: connecting between the main building and annex requires going outdoors. While there is some roofing, it's still quite chilly in midwinter due to the distance; however, it might feel pleasant during other seasons. This Onsen accommodation is one I would love to visit again if we have another chance to come back to Kinugawa—thank you!

    The accommodation wa...

    The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. For my elderly parents, wheelchairs and chairs were provided, allowing us to stay with peace of mind. The meals were delicious; however, since we had grown tired of New Year's dishes, it was a bit disappointing to be served similar food again. Additionally, the annex was far from the large public bath, which was slightly inconvenient. Although there was a lounge in the annex for drink service, only coffee was available for a short time in the morning, making it feel less cost-effective compared to other accommodations. The large public bath did not alternate between men and women; it remained the same both in the morning and at night, which was disappointing. The elevator was small, and I worried about my carry-on bag being damaged as it got caught multiple times while being carried by staff without any apology offered.

    Full of stink bugs!

    This was my first time staying here. After being shown to the room, I was told not to open the windows because there were a lot of stink bugs. "Excuse me?" I chose this room hoping to relax on the terrace while enjoying the early autumn view of Kinugawa. There was no prior notice, no announcement at check-in, and it was only mentioned at the very end after showing us to the room... The lack of consideration from this accommodation was extremely disappointing. Not even an apology was offered. There were about 15 stink bugs in the room as well, and I had to deal with over 10 of them from arrival until late at night. Touching them caused skin irritation—it was a terrible experience overall. The onsen water quality itself wasn’t bad despite being diluted, circulated, and containing chlorine. However, both the large public bath and private open-air bath in our room seemed like they weren’t cleaned daily; it was obvious upon entering that soap scum covered doors and partitions, which were also moldy. The meals were plentiful in quantity. It was nice that we could enjoy them in a private dining space without worrying about others around us. After checking out, there was a convenient shuttle service available to Kinugawa Station for our return trip.

    Disappointing

    This will be my last stay at Wakadake no Sho, despite having used it several times before. I understand the desire to increase revenue without incurring extra costs in this era, but as someone who knows how it was before, I found it disappointing. The maintenance of the Facility, especially the Room and large public bath, was not up to standard and not worth paying for. Additionally, I thought proper grooming and attire were basic expectations for hotel staff; however, seeing staff wearing sandals with crushed heels gave me an impression of the Hotel's declining quality. This experience was very disappointing.

    No coordination at all.

    When I requested an earlier breakfast before my visit, I was told it was impossible before 7:30 AM, but they could manage 7:20 AM. So, I requested 7:20 AM. At check-in, there was no communication about this request, and the staff said, "I'll just note it as 7:30 for now." At that point, I mentioned the possibility of leaving early without breakfast but received no response. Later that evening during check-in day, when I inquired about pre-checkout procedures, I was told it wasn't possible. When I mentioned the possibility of an early morning checkout instead, they initially said it would be difficult but then agreed to prepare for it (again with no coordination). On the morning of departure at 6:30 AM, there was no one at reception. After ringing the bell several times and finally getting a staff member's attention, they repeatedly hesitated about whether pre-payment could be processed. After waiting for some time, payment was finally completed and I left without breakfast. While it's perhaps unfair to compare with international hotel chains, there seemed to be a lack of coordination and customer-focused thinking here—making me unlikely to return. As a Diamond Member for several years and commenting on IKYU.com for the first time now—I felt this experience warranted leaving feedback here.

    The bath was absolutely wonderful.

    We visited with my father, mother, wife, and son—a total of five people. Thank you very much. The bath in the Room was absolutely fantastic. Everyone was delighted by the difference in scenery between bathing during the bright daytime and the atmosphere in the evening. The temperature of the water was perfect, making it an exceptional experience. Additionally, the staff member who assisted us during meals provided such pleasant service that it elevated our impression of this Ryokan even further. We would love to visit again if we have another opportunity!

    We used the accommod...

    We used the accommodation to celebrate my mother and daughter's birthdays. A high chair was kindly prepared in the room for my elderly mother, who has difficulty standing up, which was a great help. I hadn't even noticed this need myself, so I was impressed by the exceptional hospitality. The meals were very delicious with just the right amount of seasoning, allowing my mother to enjoy every dish. The portions were not too large, which was perfect. Since it was a completely private room, it was quiet and comfortable for us as we spoke in slightly louder voices to accommodate my mother's hearing difficulties. The birthday cake surprise and even a gift from the accommodation made our time truly enjoyable. Thank you very much!

    The luxurious design...

    The luxurious design of the facility, the 24-hour onsen in the room, and the delicious cuisine were all wonderful. However, there were instances where the order of serving kaiseki dishes was incorrect, and instead of serving each dish slowly one by one as is customary for kaiseki cuisine, 2-3 dishes were served together at times. Additionally, there was an unsheltered smoking area near the hotel entrance—often considered its face—and unfortunately, cigarette odors lingered in the hallway. While both the onsen and cuisine were excellent, these issues left a disappointing impression overall.

    A highly-rated and excellent accommodation.

    A comfortable accommodation that exceeded its price. The lobby, both in the main building and the annex, was very luxurious and provided a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. With a great location, you can enjoy the Kinugawa River while soaking in the onsen in your room, watching red dragonflies and house martins dance. The meals, both breakfast and dinner, were exceptionally delicious. Not only was the presentation impressive, but each dish also stood out with its exquisite taste.

    The Onsen in the room is a favorite.

    We had a wonderful time at this lovely accommodation. The semi-open-air bath in the room was especially delightful. The meals were delicious, but it was a bit disappointing that the broth for the evening soup and morning miso soup was light in flavor. It would be great if check-out could be at 11:00 AM so we could relax more in the room.

    A wonderful Ryokan.

    We recently stayed with four people, including guests from overseas. It was our first time using this Ryokan, but we were very satisfied with both the facilities and the Room. Our guests were especially impressed by the private bath in the Room. The meals were also extremely delicious. However, one disappointment was that the sliding door leading from the large public bath to the open-air bath was difficult to open (it made quite a loud noise as well). It might be good to consider repairing it. Still, it is a very lovely Ryokan, and we would like to stay here again when visiting Kinugawa in the future.

    I had a very relaxing stay.

    Solo female traveler, I stayed as a reward for myself. Highlights: - Shuttle Service: I was picked up by car at Kinugawa Koen Station with an advance reservation. While it’s not an unwalkable distance, it was raining that day, so booking the service turned out to be a great decision. After completing the accommodation reservation, I received a call asking me to inform them of my arrival time on the day of check-in. I called about two hours before arrival after boarding the limited express train. On departure day, they dropped me off at Kinugawa Onsen Station, allowing me to see SL Taiju and buy souvenirs before catching my train—perfect! (Pickup at Koen Station and drop-off at Onsen Station.) - Hospitality: 1) During pickup, I was initially the only guest in the car when we departed. Shortly after leaving, we noticed a couple waving from outside the station. The driver kindly asked if it would be okay to return for them since they seemed like guests of this accommodation too. It turned out they had arrived on the same train as me but hadn’t made prior arrangements for pickup. They even thanked me personally for accommodating their ride! All other guests I encountered during my stay were also very polite and refined. 2) The staff member who guided me to my room and served meals was an Asian foreigner who provided excellent service and explained even complex Japanese dish names clearly—something even native Japanese might struggle with! Other Japanese staff members were equally outstanding; you could tell this accommodation is managed exceptionally well overall. During meals, hearing cheerful voices from kitchen staff saying things like “〇〇 is ready!” added warmth to the experience. 3) The large public bath area was non-slippery and impeccably clean! Although there were signs warning about slippery surfaces, in reality, there were well-designed slatted boards that provided grip while being hygienic and quick-drying—a thoughtful touch that made me happy! There didn’t seem to be any insects during daytime use either. - Meals: Absolutely adorable presentation with intricate tableware—I couldn’t believe how many types of plates they used! Storing all those must take up significant space...but everything looked so cute regardless. The variety of dishes offered left nothing more to wish for; it was incredibly satisfying overall. Even though traveling solo can sometimes feel awkward during meals elsewhere here each person gets their private dining room ensuring complete privacy without worrying about others around you. - Room Facilities: Adjustable air conditioning allowed personal comfort preferences while balcony access enhanced relaxation moments such as reading post-onsen early mornings alongside tea mugs generously provided within rooms themselves making stays extra convenient enjoyable alike! - Vending Machines priced reasonably! Overall verdict? Simply exceptional!!

    It seems it used to be a luxury Ryokan...

    I decided to stay at this accommodation after seeing a video online that showcased the appealing open-air bath, so I made a reservation. However, concerns arose immediately upon arrival. We came by car, but there was no guidance for parking as the staff seemed confused with the guests who arrived before us. Unsure of where to park, we waited in our car only to see the staff leave those guests unattended and head inside the building. The parking attendant appeared to be a foreigner and seemed unfamiliar with detailed Japanese communication, which might have caused them to seek assistance. Unfortunately, more issues followed during our stay. The next morning, we quickly finished breakfast and left for sightseeing due to dissatisfaction. It felt like minimal effort or budget was allocated towards maintenance; cleaning was inadequate, and many amenities typically found in a ryokan were missing. While it’s common nowadays for accommodations to employ foreign staff members, many here did not seem well-trained or fully understand Japanese instructions. The scale and design of this ryokan are impressive but underutilized due to these shortcomings—it feels like such a waste. Sadly for us as a couple searching for regular accommodations, this place did not meet our expectations or needs.

    The hospitality at Wakatake no Sho Bettei Sasane is truly kind, attentive, and heartwarming. The view from the room, the sound of the river, and the chirping of birds bring a sense of peace. The meals were absolutely delicious, and even the tableware was charming and beautiful. It is a wonderful accommodation that I would love to visit again if given the opportunity.
