The Onsen and bath were excellent.
The Onsen and bath were excellent. However, the meals were disappointing. It may have been unavoidable because it was during the Obon holiday period, but I was looking forward to enjoying Niigata’s rich food culture, and including the taste, my overall impression was underwhelming. Also, the drink menu was provided on an iPad and everything was displayed in Chinese, which surprised me at first. A Ryokan staff member prepared a Japanese menu for me, but it seemed our conversation could be heard next door, which made the atmosphere in my Room a bit awkward. I could hear Chinese being spoken from the neighboring Room, so they were probably Chinese guests. When they checked out, they stared at my Room for a while, which really spoiled the mood.

Your First Trip with a Baby
We stayed with my son’s family on this trip. Traveling with our 8-month-old baby, we had some concerns, but even though we made separate Reservations for two Rooms on different dates, the staff kindly arranged for us to dine together and showed thoughtful care in many ways, which made our stay truly enjoyable. Thank you very much. It became a wonderful memory. My son’s family also said they would like to come again, so we hope to visit again as well.

A grand Ryokan I’ve always wanted to stay at
I have visited Tsukioka Onsen before, but this was my first stay at Kaho. The luxurious interior, spacious Room, cleanliness, amenities, and the open-air bath with a view… I was amazed that you can stay here with such great value for money. Just one thing: a staff member sat down in the Room and explained things face-to-face, but it was only along the lines of “Bath towels are in the public bath” and “The key is over there.” If they are going to explain things, I feel it would be more considerate to show each item properly—pointing things out, guiding us on the spot, opening drawers while explaining, etc. Since you can figure most things out yourself (there are QR codes and you can call from the in-room phone), a half-hearted explanation may actually be unnecessary. Some guests want it shortened because they’re tired; others want every detail explained. Each Accommodation has its own style, so it’s not really an issue—but many places open the fridge and say “Please help yourself,” or “Adjust it here if you’re hot,” so I found myself thinking: why are we sitting down in the Room for this? I also didn’t notice there were samue loungewear provided (my oversight). The meals were ordinary both dinner and breakfast. The tableware was wonderful and seasonal ingredients were used, and there were some fun touches like sukiyaki with cotton candy added in and an oil fondue you fry yourself—but that didn’t necessarily make it taste better. Tsukioka’s green Onsen is outstanding. The satoyama countryside scenery is beautiful. I truly hope this nature—and Niigata’s rice farming—will be protected. These are just my personal impressions, but I think this is definitely a Ryokan I would feel confident recommending for a trip with someone else.

From the moment we arrived, we received attentive guidance. The property is spacious but easy to navigate, and the complimentary lounge was very helpful. There were plenty of staff members, and their greetings were warm, making our stay very pleasant. I briefly greeted the proprietress at breakfast, and I was truly moved when she recognized me at checkout and said, “Thank you for earlier,” just from seeing my face. I accidentally left something behind in the Room, but they handled it courteously and returned it properly according to my schedule. Thank you for all your help. We would love to visit again.

Proprietress
The furnishings are wonderful. From the proprietress to all the staff, the farewell at departure was truly moving. Next time, I’d love to visit with my whole family. The food was delicious, though I think a bit more creativity could make it even better. As expected of Niigata rice—the steamed rice was genuinely excellent. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Dinner service
We were truly impressed by the warm, pleasant service. It was a wonderful overnight stay with my one-and-only close friend after a long time, and we enjoyed a delightful dinner together. The young lady who served us was beautiful, and her hospitality was outstanding. Her refined personality really shone through—something that can’t be learned through training or workshops alone. Everyone was satisfied, and we’d love to give her the title of “Miss Tsukioka Onsen.”

Truly the best in Japan!
It was a thoroughly satisfying stay. I was happy with everything—the Facility, the meals, and the service. I relaxed at the bar located just steps from the entrance, used the sauna in my Room and unwound on the terrace, and after enjoying the Onsen to complete my perfect day, there were even treats in the post-bath lounge—ice cream, complimentary drinks, and even shrimp-stock miso soup. It was such a relaxing, satisfying experience that it almost made me too comfortable to do anything else. Dinner was also impressive— I was truly moved by how luxurious and carefully crafted it was. The staff member in charge of our meal service turned out to be in their first year, but their hospitality was flawless—so polished it felt like they had ten years of experience. It made me understand why this place is considered among Japan’s very best. I would absolutely love to stay again. I know you all have busy days ahead—please take good care of yourselves.

It was a comfortable stay.
The Facility is, of course, luxurious and spotless, but at a time when many properties are forced to scale back services due to staffing shortages, this is a truly wonderful Ryokan with excellent staff training and attentive hospitality. The sulfur-rich hot spring water was fantastic, and I was pleasantly surprised to find children’s toys in the large public bath, a shampoo bar, and even sheet masks available. The meals were also completely satisfying in both quantity and taste. The breakfast buffet was thoughtfully arranged with creative touches that made it fun to enjoy; we stayed with young children and everyone was delighted. We even received a handwritten note from the staff member at the dinner venue when we checked out. Thank you very much.

The service felt very inconsistent, with a big gap between the good and the bad. We requested a fairly nice Room, but breakfast was noisy due to the buffet style, and nothing stood out as particularly tasty. We left the Hotel on the 9:40 bus, but the bus to Niigata departed at 10:20. We were dropped off in the cold snow with no umbrella or shelter, and by the time we boarded we were completely soaked. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will return.

Luxury Ryokan
A luxurious, huge Ryokan for the first time in a while. The Onsen baths were large and very nice, but the water management was so-so—though that’s probably unavoidable in such a big Facility. It was also relaxing to stay at an Accommodation where all the staff were Japanese for the first time in a while. The breakfast venue was so large that it was a bit inconvenient.

The famous emerald-green Onsen
We drove 4.5 hours from Tokyo to see the famous emerald-green Onsen for ourselves, and arrived to a grand entrance where many staff members warmly welcomed us. The moment you step inside, the luxurious, high-quality architecture lifts your spirits. The Onsen really is emerald green, with a strong sulfur scent that makes you feel you’ve come to a truly great hot spring. The intensity of the sulfur aroma rivals Kusatsu—maybe even stronger!? The large public bath is very spacious, and with several different baths to choose from, it never gets boring. With such high-quality Onsen and snowy scenery, it was so wonderful we could have stayed in forever. As for the meals, the sashimi was especially delicious. I did feel the breakfast buffet could have been a bit better, but given the reasonable price, I have no complaints. If it were closer, I’d come all the time—an Accommodation with an exceptionally high level of satisfaction.

Stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. Very satisfied.
We stayed for two nights and three days. The Onsen was incredibly relaxing, and we ended up soaking three times a day—morning, afternoon, and night. The open-air bath was also spacious and airy, making it easy to unwind. Every meal was delicious, and the complimentary services in the lobby were a nice touch. There were also massage chairs, so we felt very relaxed throughout our stay. The staff were courteous and attentive, which made us feel comfortable and at ease. This is an Accommodation we’d love to visit again in a different season.

The hot water is simply exceptional.
This is my favorite accommodation, and I stay here twice a year. This time, I stayed for two nights. The hot spring water is absolutely amazing. The meals were satisfying, with different menus for both nights. However, the dining area was not in a separate building this time, which was disappointing as the atmosphere there is usually better. In the lobby, snacks and drinks (including alcohol) are available freely during designated hours. The overall satisfaction was very high; the manju provided were delicious but ran out quickly. Unfortunately, on the second night when I went to enjoy drinks and snacks in the lobby, it was crowded due to check-in procedures (check-in starts at 3 PM; I went around 2 PM to avoid crowds but it was already busy). Some seemingly available seats were reserved by staff using cups or other items for check-in purposes, so I couldn’t sit down. (On my first night’s check-in, procedures were done at the front desk and then I was guided directly to my room.) Since no seats were available in the lobby that evening, I returned to my room and came back later after things settled down—only to find a sign saying all manju had run out. As someone staying for multiple nights, this series of events felt disappointing and disheartening.

We look forward to serving you again next year.
We stayed here last year and this year for my daughter's birthday. Thank you for taking our family photo and even giving her a birthday present. We are deeply moved by the warm hospitality of all the staff. The food was excellent! I heard that this time, it ranked second among Japan's accommodations, surpassed by Suimeikan, but I believe it will be number one next year.

60th Birthday Trip
We stayed as a group of four, including my husband and my sister's family. The Room, bath, and meals were all excellent. The Facility was luxurious, and all the staff greeted us with warm smiles. Truly deserving of being named the best Ryokan in Japan. We will definitely stay again!

Truly No.1!
I stayed here 4 years ago and was satisfied again this time. One change I noticed was that the lobby had transformed from a café to a sweets buffet. This makes waiting during check-in enjoyable, eliminates the need for snacks in the Room, and is convenient for the staff as well. The large public bath has been updated to ReFa, but I still noticed the familiar sulfur scent upon entering, which brought back memories. What hasn’t changed is the warm hospitality of the hostess and their signature tomato dish during meals. Four years ago, there was a whole tomato in sukiyaki; this time, it was wrapped with bonito flakes. Additionally, there were dried persimmons paired with cheese crafted by their head chef—absolutely delicious!

I stayed at a Ryokan I had been curious about for a long time with my parents. It was a very large Ryokan with luxurious interiors, and the room was equipped with a massage chair and other well-maintained facilities, making it very comfortable. The women's bath had three open-air baths where you could enjoy various types of hot springs. The meals were lavish kaiseki cuisine featuring an abundance of sashimi, which was delicious but too much to finish. However, they offered a delightful service by delivering dessert to the room later. The lobby also provided great services such as a dessert buffet available until 6 PM and a drink bar (including alcohol) open until 10 PM. The staff were kind and made our trip enjoyable. Thank you very much!

Onsen Trip with Family
I frequently visit Tsukioka Onsen, but this time I splurged and stayed at Kaho with my sister's family from Tokyo. Even though it was a Saturday stay and likely close to full occupancy, the lounge and baths were not crowded, allowing us to relax comfortably. The drink and sweets service in the lounge, as well as the amenities in the bath area, were so thorough that I felt like I could have come with just a change of clothes. The hospitality from the proprietress and staff was natural, warm, and pleasant. While everything was satisfying, if I had to point out one thing, it would be that dinner felt a bit rushed; some staff seemed very busy as they repeated explanations twice. It made me feel slightly apologetic for their workload. Still, I would love to visit again!

It was a wonderful accommodation.
The hospitality was truly exceptional, just as the reviews mentioned! The outstanding hospitality and the high motivation of the staff enhanced the comfort of our stay. The view from the open-air bath in the room was also magnificent. This is an accommodation I would definitely want to visit again.

A Blissful Moment
We used this facility to celebrate a 60th birthday. The changing room had nail care items, and the services in the facility, such as free drinks and shrimp miso soup after bathing, made it a truly memorable trip.

This was my first time staying here. I visited with high expectations, as it is said to be the best in Japan, and I was truly impressed by the attentive service that exceeded my expectations. Gorgeous Accommodation
A luxurious and splendid accommodation after a long time! My usual travel companions were also very satisfied. The staff's hospitality was pleasant, and being able to enjoy beer freely in the lobby was a delightful touch. For onsen lovers, the large bath is also a great attraction. One suggestion: Regarding the sea bream chazuke served at dinner, I believe preferences vary among individuals. Since it’s so delicious, it might be better to serve the broth separately so that each guest can pour their desired amount before eating. This way, even those who are not fond of chazuke can enjoy it separately. It may be a bit of extra effort, but please consider this idea!

This was my first time at Tsukioka Onsen. The facility is impressive and amazing. The room on the 9th floor had a great view and was very comfortable. It was my misunderstanding, but I assumed the open-air bath in the room was Onsen water, which it wasn't, so that was a bit disappointing. In the end, I didn't use it even once. However, the water in the large public bath was excellent.

The accommodation had a good exterior, but the interior did not meet expectations.
I travel with accommodation about once every quarter, but this time I found several disappointing aspects, perhaps because my expectations were high. Overall, as mentioned in the title, while the good points (facility and cleanliness) were impeccable, there were moments that brought me back to reality. Despite being advertised as high-class accommodation, there were many instances where I felt "really?" Firstly, regarding amenities: it followed a business hotel style where you take only what you need. Additionally, items like razors had only basic functionality. The welcome drink was served in paper cups that concealed the contents; it felt lackluster to be told to enjoy sake or wine this way. For comparison, at other hotels before and after this stay offering similar services—one used glassware and another provided transparent cups for alcoholic beverages separate from soft drinks. At checkout, receiving a receipt handed over without an envelope further added to my impression that cost-cutting measures might be misplaced. Next is customer service: upon being shown to the room for dinner preparation, I was abruptly asked to choose my drink for dinner right away—this felt sudden and surprising since it's usually customary to select drinks leisurely during meals. Dinner was served in a private room; however, loud voices from staff made it hard to relax. Moreover, dishes arrived at such rapid intervals that enjoying conversation alongside dining became difficult—the pace detracted from savoring the experience fully. By the time rice was served towards meal's end (with three unfinished dishes still on our table), I couldn't help but wonder if they wanted us done quickly just so they could clear everything away promptly! Eating rice paired with sashimi like side dishes isn't something I've ever encountered before—it left me questioning their approach entirely. Thirdly comes breakfast: while understandable given its large hall setting requiring some walking distance between food stations—the sight of miso soup bowls stacked atop one another despite containing ingredients shocked me! Not only could toppings get crushed under weight but also seeing them presented this way left an unpleasant impression overall. Lastly regarding staff appearance—such as visibly oversized slacks spilling over belts—it detracted significantly from professionalism expected here too among various other unmentioned disappointments leading ultimately toward leaving feeling disheartened altogether by departure moment itself... Finally reviewing responses shared publicly online attributed directly toward management team handling feedbacks previously observed elsewhere seemed dismissive enough bordering arrogance instead addressing concerns genuinely raised therein reflecting poorly overall reputation-wise unfortunately...

Unparalleled in every aspect. Truly Japan's number one.
It has been over 10 years since I started staying at Kahou. The facility, hot spring quality, meals, hospitality, cleanliness—there's no end to the list of wonderful aspects. I visit Kahou not only on special occasions but also on ordinary days. To the proprietress and all the staff, thank you always for your warm hospitality. I look forward to visiting again.

It was very relaxing.
We stayed for 2 nights in a Japanese-Western style Room on the top floor with an open-air bath and sauna. The room was very clean, spacious, and helped us relax after a long journey. There were plenty of massage chairs and ReFa items, allowing us to unwind comfortably in the room. The bath and open-air bath were absolutely fantastic. The meals were also excellent—breakfast was a buffet, and dinner had a menu that left us completely satisfied. One downside was that the hallway (10th floor) and changing area felt very hot, possibly due to energy-saving measures? Thank you so much to all the staff for your kindness!

Excellent.
The view from the window, the hotel's facilities and services, and the room were all excellent. I also enjoyed relaxing in the Onsen. However, during this hot season, I found it inconvenient that there was no cold water pot in the room or a vending machine available when I got thirsty at night. Although one complimentary bottle of water was provided, it wasn't enough. If possible, I would appreciate reconsideration on this matter. Another point of dissatisfaction was that the dinner venue felt cramped and lacked a good view despite the delicious food. Guests visiting in large groups seemed to be dining in spacious rooms with views of beautifully lit gardens—I couldn't help but feel envious. I wonder if this difference is due to group size or perhaps differences in course selections? Still, I'd love to visit again during another season someday!
