    Unparalleled in every aspect. Truly Japan's number one.

    It has been over 10 years since I started staying at Kahou. The facility, hot spring quality, meals, hospitality, cleanliness—there's no end to the list of wonderful aspects. I visit Kahou not only on special occasions but also on ordinary days. To the proprietress and all the staff, thank you always for your warm hospitality. I look forward to visiting again.

    It was very relaxing.

    We stayed for 2 nights in a Japanese-Western style Room on the top floor with an open-air bath and sauna. The room was very clean, spacious, and helped us relax after a long journey. There were plenty of massage chairs and ReFa items, allowing us to unwind comfortably in the room. The bath and open-air bath were absolutely fantastic. The meals were also excellent—breakfast was a buffet, and dinner had a menu that left us completely satisfied. One downside was that the hallway (10th floor) and changing area felt very hot, possibly due to energy-saving measures? Thank you so much to all the staff for your kindness!

    Excellent.

    The view from the window, the hotel's facilities and services, and the room were all excellent. I also enjoyed relaxing in the Onsen. However, during this hot season, I found it inconvenient that there was no cold water pot in the room or a vending machine available when I got thirsty at night. Although one complimentary bottle of water was provided, it wasn't enough. If possible, I would appreciate reconsideration on this matter. Another point of dissatisfaction was that the dinner venue felt cramped and lacked a good view despite the delicious food. Guests visiting in large groups seemed to be dining in spacious rooms with views of beautifully lit gardens—I couldn't help but feel envious. I wonder if this difference is due to group size or perhaps differences in course selections? Still, I'd love to visit again during another season someday!

    A Luxurious Experience

    The luxury of the facility and the pleasant service from the staff allowed us to enjoy an unparalleled luxurious time. The flowers arranged in the room conveyed a heartfelt sense of hospitality. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again.

    A luxurious and splendid accommodation like an art museum, with the attentive care of the hostess.

    I became interested after seeing it on social media as the top-rated accommodation chosen by professionals. I usually opt for small luxury accommodations, but this time I stayed at a large-scale accommodation after a long while. Its massive structure was reminiscent of a giant battleship, which surprised me. The exquisite furnishings, paintings, and flower arrangements were impressive. I even considered buying the life story of the proprietress sold at the shop. The facilities were excellent and impeccably clean, with creative touches everywhere. The pool surpassed even the indoor pool at Halekulani Okinawa in terms of openness and luxury. The special room on the 10th floor was renovated last year and provided great satisfaction; however, it felt somewhat incomplete as a special room due to the limited variety of beverages available in-room. Dinner served in private dining rooms was luxurious and splendid, with an exceptionally beautiful garden view adding to its charm. The Onsen allowed me to enjoy both sulfur baths and Shiratama no Yu (milky white hot spring water). The staff were energetic and attentive—no complaints there. However, one downside was dinner service for large groups; similar to Noto Kagaya's in-room dining experience, some dishes seemed like they had been sitting out too long before being served. For instance, fish could have been grilled more crisply despite using high-quality ingredients—it left something to be desired overall. Cooking rice using solid fuel in individual pots within rooms felt disrespectful towards Koshihikari rice—it turned out sticky and didn’t suit my taste preferences well either. Breakfast buffet showed effort but fell short flavor-wise compared to expectations from such an outstanding accommodation otherwise scoring 100 points across all other aspects! Managing such large-scale operations must indeed be challenging—I sympathize deeply with them! The proprietress could often be seen during meals or farewells throughout various moments around premises exuding authentic Onsen ambiance beautifully enhancing overall experience further still! It was my first visit ever exploring Niigata region made conveniently accessible via rental car straight from airport nearby!

    The vast rice field views are breathtaking.

    The hotel's spacious room, cuisine, service, large public bath, and luxurious lobby were all as wonderful as mentioned in the reviews. We parked our car at a nearby parking lot within walking distance, but shuttle service was provided. It was June with clear skies, and the view of the vast surrounding rice fields was breathtaking.

    Three things to note.

    I stayed in a top-floor room with an open-air bath on a weekday in April. As expected of the Ryokan ranked number one nationwide, everything from the Onsen, facilities, dinner, and customer service was impeccable. A special thanks to the staff member who served us during dinner for the handwritten message and photo—it was truly appreciated. While there are many positive points that others have already mentioned, I would like to share three areas for improvement: 1) I was looking forward to enjoying the open-air bath on the top floor; however, it was inconveniently designed with only a bath placed separately from the changing area and washing space. Additionally, while our room is indeed higher than nearby Hotels or Ryokans, there were no privacy screens or coverings. This made it feel exposed to taller neighboring accommodations—something that might make female guests uncomfortable. As a result, we decided not to use it at all. 2) When trying to enjoy a post-bath drink at the lobby lounge, we found it occupied by foreign tour groups using it as their rest area. It was noisy and crowded—perhaps this space should be reserved exclusively for staying guests? 3) Regarding breakfast buffet: While live kitchen stations were preparing delicious-looking egg dishes, most guests didn’t seem aware of them—especially older visitors on weekdays who may find such setups unclear without proper guidance or announcements from staff members. Additionally: some buffet counters are set too high for shorter individuals making food selection difficult; compared with dinner quality overall breakfast offerings felt subpar (e.g., French toast quality could be reconsidered). 4) Lastly—a minor note—the miso soup offered in front of large baths had an overpowering smell lingering around rest areas which might bother those who don’t consume it after bathing freshened up!

    It was an excellent and impeccable Ryokan.

    I took the 2:35 PM bus from Toyosaka Station, but it was almost full, and I was worried about having to wait for the next bus an hour later if I couldn't board. Upon arriving at the Ryokan, my suitcase was promptly carried for me, and after check-in, I enjoyed a variety of snacks and drinks in the lobby while waiting to be shown to my room. The staff member who escorted me to my room provided such exceptional service that it reminded me of Japan's true spirit of hospitality. For dinner, I chose a menu with smaller portions, which was more than sufficient for seniors like myself. The quality and variety of dishes were satisfying overall. One suggestion would be regarding transportation; as the Onsen town or shopping area is a bit far away, I noticed a microbus running between Kaho and Senkei Ryokans—if possible, it would be helpful if guests could use this service to get to Senkei. The steep slope from the outer gate to the entrance can be particularly challenging for elderly guests when going uphill. However, experiencing why this Ryokan has been ranked number one by professionals became clear during my stay. I also heard that Kagaya in Noto is temporarily closed due to earthquake damage but will soon reopen with their new Ryokan under construction. I hope both establishments continue striving together toward providing even better services through healthy competition!

    An Accommodation Too Wonderful to Sleep

    We stayed to celebrate a birthday and our son's graduation from kindergarten. First, we were captivated by the luxurious lobby. While some accommodations may have clean prominent areas but dirty carpets or small details that disappoint, this Ryokan was spotless everywhere despite its large scale. It made our stay very pleasant. The quality of the Onsen water was unbelievably perfect for my taste, better than any other Onsen I've experienced before. It was the first time I felt it would be a waste to fall asleep at such an amazing accommodation. Next time, I would love to bring my parents along as well. It became a truly wonderful memory for us!

    The Perfect Family Getaway

    As a resident of Niigata, I visited after a long time. From the warm welcome by the hostess to the unchanging charm of the Onsen, fresh seafood, and a tasting of local beef, everything was absolutely satisfying! My family was also delighted, and we look forward to visiting again.

    The relaxing Hotel was excellent.

    It was my first trip to Niigata, and everything about the Hotel was excellent. First, I was deeply soothed by the beauty of the fresh flowers. The welcome drink and sweets were of high quality, and the coffee-flavored beer—my first time trying it—was incredibly delicious. The Room exceeded expectations compared to its online description. The sulfur Onsen and meals were also outstanding. Choosing this place was absolutely the right decision!

    It was my second consecutive week of staying. Thank you for upgrading the room. At the Kaho Main Building, I was assigned a countryside-facing room for the first time in a while, and I enjoyed the magnificent view, which was different from that of the onsen town side. Since it was a corner room, there were windows on two sides. The main window had a bay window-like design with a wide opening, making the room brighter and more spacious than usual—this left a lasting impression. Regarding dinner, I enjoyed creative dishes such as chirashi sushi and crab served with citrus jelly, which felt different from the usual menu. The hot pot finished with egg topping was particularly unique—I had never experienced this at any other ryokan before. Including nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) in the sashimi selection was also delightful. The special dessert plate I ordered separately was more beautifully arranged than any I've had before—it made me very happy. As for the onsen experience, it was my first time enjoying milky white water. Right after check-in, it had its usual clear emerald green color; however, by midnight and morning, it turned completely white. This allowed me to truly understand why this spring is called "Shiratama no Yu." I’m not sure when my next visit will be but hope to stay again soon. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience!

    Very unfortunate.

    The response of the staff during dinner was very disappointing. There was a dish where meat and vegetables were grilled on a single-person stove, but the fire went out midway, so I asked for the solid fuel to be replaced. Since there were meat and vegetables on the grill plate, I asked if I should remove them myself, but the staff said, "It's fine as it is." So I left it as instructed. As expected, when moving the grill plate, the meat and vegetables fell off. There was no apology or offer to replace them; instead, they simply said, "I'll bring chopsticks," picked up the fallen food with chopsticks, wrapped it in tissue paper, and took it away. Despite this being an accommodation with a relatively high price point, there was no apology or replacement offered afterward either—the response felt careless. Additionally, there were two types of meat included in small portions; however, one type turned out to be almost entirely fat-like beef tallow. A companion who stayed with me kindly exchanged their portion for mine. Furthermore, we upgraded our dessert only to find about five strawberries that had turned white and mushy... Please do not serve ingredients that are clearly deteriorating. It was heartbreaking since we paid extra for an upgrade. While some staff may be new while others are experienced veterans at this accommodation—guests perceive all staff equally as representatives of your establishment's reputation. Proper training should ensure they are well-prepared before interacting with guests directly. Measures such as pairing new employees with experienced ones could also help improve service quality. The bath and room were excellent; however unfortunately due to disappointing meals along with poor service from certain staff members—it left us feeling sad overall about our stay here compared even against fresher tastier meals enjoyed earlier at an izakaya near Niigata Station...

    Thank you for hosting us during our family trip. It was our first time visiting during a season with lingering snow, and it was fascinating to see how the same scenery could feel so different just with the presence of snow. While I had an image of Niigata having powdery snow, the heavier, flat flakes falling in the open-air bath were a refreshing change. We also appreciate your thoughtfulness regarding the photos at dinner. Although we were informed at the front desk that arrangements might be difficult, we were told at the dining venue that two copies could be prepared using spares. However, upon opening the envelope after checkout, we found four copies inside—enough for each family member to have one as a keepsake. This will surely become a cherished memory for all of us. The sweets and drinks in the lobby were more abundant compared to our previous visit, which made us very happy! The freshly made pancakes stood out in particular—they had just the right amount of sweetness and never felt overwhelming. My family greatly enjoyed this stay and mentioned how wonderful it would be if such relaxing hot springs were closer to home. It turned out to be an excellent way to show appreciation to my parents—thank you so much. Next week, I plan on staying again with friends. I look forward to your hospitality once more!

    Great satisfaction

    The meals were delicious. We were very satisfied with the services, including the welcome drink, sweets time, and alcohol time. Our elementary school-aged children were able to enjoy table tennis and swimming. The Onsen, with its snowy scenery and open-air bath, was a wonderful escape from the ordinary.

    Snow Handling

    If the Hakushin Line stops, they provide a bus to Niigata Station, showcasing excellent emergency response. The facilities are outstanding. The front desk service might feel slightly formal, but that could be subjective. It is a wonderful Property.

    It was a wonderful Ryokan.

    We stayed for a multiple night stay as a couple, and our room was upgraded, allowing us to relax in a spacious and comfortable room with a wonderful view. Not only was it spacious, but the attention to detail with the placement of outlets, lighting, and magnifying mirrors was impressive. It was amazing that all rooms with open-air baths were equipped with ReFa curling irons and straighteners. In the large public bath, all the shower heads were ReFa, and the open-air bath had a faint sulfur scent with silky water that made our skin smooth. All the meals were delicious, and we ate so much that we almost burst. It was my first time trying Niigata's local dish, noppe stew, and it was delicate, refined, and very tasty. We enjoyed it in a private room while watching the snowy scenery with delicious Niigata sake. The seafood bowl at the breakfast buffet was also delicious. It would have been even better with vinegared rice. There weren't many open shops in the onsen town, but we enjoyed wine and macarons at the dessert buffet & drink bar from 2 PM. Regarding the service, all the staff (even the shop staff and gardeners!) responded with smiles, and the attention to detail during dinner was wonderful. I am convinced that it deserves the overall first place in the 100 Best Hotels and Ryokan in Japan chosen by professionals!

    Breakfast is somewhat disappointing.

    It became a good memory for the beginning of the year. Overall, it was a good stay, but the breakfast was somewhat disappointing. There were many items, but the content was at the level of a business hotel. Also, it was crowded, so it is not suitable for those who want to enjoy a leisurely breakfast. The onsen had a very good quality of water. However, I wondered how often the water in that huge bath is replaced.

    It was an enjoyable New Year's trip!

    First, you will be amazed by the gorgeous building. We had a very enjoyable stay with the staff's hospitality and pleasant service. The Onsen is top-level among the ones I have visited so far, and it is the best. The meals, along with fine sake, allowed us to fully enjoy the treasure trove of ingredients in Niigata. We look forward to visiting again in a different season.

    I use it every year.

    This time, I am posting with the hope for improvement in the future due to some disappointing points. First, when I asked for water during the meal service, I was told it's over there, meaning I had to pour it myself. Also, I requested a brief explanation of the wine, but it was not provided at all. Additionally, I ordered tempura separately, but it was served with only salt, without any tempura sauce. When I asked for rice midway, the red rice listed on the menu was not served, so I asked if it was not available, and I was asked in return if I needed it. Moreover, when I went to the massage reception, I was told that the esthetic uses water-soluble oil, implying that their service is the real deal and better. Does water-soluble oil even exist? The person in charge of serving the meal seemed quite young, so I thought it might be understandable, but perhaps the training is not thorough. I really like this property, so I apologize, but I decided to post this.

    High-quality Stays

    The large public bath, open-air bath, and the open-air bath in the Room were all excellent. The gentleman in charge of dinner service was very friendly and provided great service with a smile. Thank you also for celebrating my daughter's birthday. If I may make a request, although there was an extra-large size for the yukata, the Room wear (the type that is separated into top and bottom) was only available in one size, so it would have been nice to have larger sizes. Considering that many inbound guests will also visit, please consider this.

    It was excellent!

    I used it for my boyfriend's birthday. Thank you for changing the Room to a bedroom. The coffee and tea snacks in the lounge were delicious, and the food was excellent! I also used it in the summer, but the winter menu dishes were incredibly delicious. The staff, including the restaurant service, were all professional, making it a great trip.

    As expected of a Ryokan

    I had always been curious about this ryokan, a regular in the top ranks of the 100 best ryokans chosen by professionals, but since it's a bit far from Tokyo, this was my first visit. From the start, I was impressed by the warm welcome, the magnificent facilities, the spacious garden, and the lounge service where you can enjoy sake, wine, and beer. The room was spacious with a great view, truly deserving of its high ratings. The Shiratama no Yu had a wonderful combination of a large open-air bath with a strong sulfur flow and an indoor bath with heated water. The dinner, enjoyed leisurely in a private room, was varied and delicious, and the staff's service was excellent. The only thing that fell slightly short compared to the top group of ryokans I've stayed at before was the quality of the tuna and black wagyu beef, which I use as a personal benchmark. The seafood bowl with unlimited ikura at the breakfast buffet was so delicious that it made me want to return just for that. On the other hand, the Western food and bread were ordinary, but the fresh grapefruit juice and Yasuda yogurt were good. From the photos to the wonderful farewell at the end, it was a ryokan that I would definitely like to visit again, undeterred by the distance.

    The person in charge...

    The person in charge of dinner was excellent... It was wonderful. They handled all of our unreasonable requests... The food was also excellent. However, perhaps due to the season? Mushrooms! The first day's Hotel also had mushrooms. The Room had a view of the countryside from the window, and the bath was an indoor bath. Both the indoor and open-air baths were wonderful. Especially, the open-air bath was very relaxing. Thank you very much.

    Be amazed by the overwhelming spaciousness.

    Upon entering, you will be amazed by the size of the Ryokan. It's great to enjoy drinks, including alcohol, in the waiting area. I used the standard bed room and was impressed by the window offering a panoramic view. I was also pleased that the staff introduced the room upon entering. Inside, there was a puzzle called The T, which kept me entertained. The Onsen is excellent, leaving your skin smooth and making you feel beautiful. The food is delicious and very filling. There is also a ping-pong table, and I enjoyed various activities. I would love to visit again.
