    This was my first trip to Sendai, and I also visited the Matsushima area for the first time. From the hospitality to how well-stocked the amenities were, everything exceeded my expectations, and the view from the room was wonderful. The meals were also very delicious. I did notice a few small flies in my room on the 4th floor, but other than that I was satisfied.

    The manager’s personality

    Honestly, given the location, I initially thought this might be a “disappointing Ryokan,” but the manager was attentive to every detail at both breakfast and dinner, checked in with us often, and completely changed my impression. Their warm smile and character were wonderful. It was the first time—after staying at many Accommodations—that the presence of a single staff member so thoroughly transformed my overall view of a Ryokan. I would love to return while this manager is still in good health. Inside the Room, there was a mix of long-established Ryokan features and newer furnishings, and it was clear they have made many thoughtful improvements over time. The view from the Onsen bath in our 4th-floor Room was also excellent. We were able to enjoy Matsushima at a relaxed pace. The bustle around the port by the sightseeing boat terminal is always unpleasant for me—especially in the heat—but it was great that we could walk comfortably along a quiet seaside route from the Ryokan and reach the terminal in about 10 minutes. Recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy Matsushima peacefully.

    This is a wonderful Ryokan.

    The welcome lounge service, meals, Room, and bath were all wonderful, and we were able to relax and enjoy a leisurely stay. We also appreciated that the hometown tax donation program could be used effectively even on the day. We would like to stay again.

    Wonderful

    The meals were truly delicious—we were absolutely delighted! The view from the Room was also wonderful. All of the staff were very kind, and we felt completely refreshed. This time, we stayed with my daughter and her friend’s family, but next time we’d love to visit with our whole family. Thank you very much!!

    I’ve stayed here several times, and I’m very satisfied again this time.

    First of all, the meals are absolutely delicious—I’m impressed every time. The staff are always friendly and attentive, making each stay very comfortable. And the spa treatments are simply outstanding; the therapist is wonderful, and I felt truly relaxed. The Facility isn’t new, but I’m glad I found an Accommodation that makes me want to come back again and again after so long. I’m planning to stay again in autumn, and I look forward to it.

    A nice, relaxing Hotel.

    As an elderly couple, we wanted to enjoy a calm course meal rather than a buffet, so we made a Reservation at Kofutei. First, the location is excellent: the sea is right in front of you, and Matsushima Bay can be seen at a glance from the Room and the large public bath. The building itself may be old, but it seems to have been renovated and felt clean. It was also reassuring to see Airdog air purifiers installed. As for the meals, both breakfast and dinner were prepared with simple flavors that brought out the quality of each ingredient, and we appreciated the thoughtful timing of service. The hospitality was also very good—from being welcomed in the parking lot to guidance to our Room and attentive service at welcome drinks. The bath area was also well cleaned and well maintained. There were no flashy performances or excessive services that are popular these days, but throughout the Hotel we felt a strong commitment to doing the basics thoroughly, which made our stay very comfortable. The price was a little high for us, but it was well worth it—we were very satisfied. We highly recommend it for older guests or anyone who prefers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere.

    They were very kind and helpful.

    The Room was spacious, and the three of us were able to relax. My wife especially liked the in-room bath and used it many times. Because we mentioned on the spot at dinner that my wife has foods she cannot eat, we thought it would be difficult to change the dishes, but thank you for responding so quickly. My wife was grateful as well. We rated it 4 because the large public bath was not very big and there was no open-air bath on one side, but the Onsen water quality was excellent and left our skin smooth. We would like to stay again if we have the opportunity.

    We were extremely satisfied!

    I stayed here on a solo trip. From my Room, I could enjoy a view like a painting. The large public bath also offers breathtaking views of Matsushima while you soak. Meals are served as a full-course dinner. Everything was delicious, and I truly feel glad from the bottom of my heart that I chose this Accommodation. All the staff were very kind and attentive. I felt this was a perfect Accommodation with an exceptionally high level of satisfaction. Thank you very much.

    First time since COVID-19

    Before COVID, this was an Accommodation I loved and visited about three times. After COVID, dinner service was unavailable for a while, so I waited to see how things would go. This time, I finally returned on a Plan with both breakfast and dinner and was really looking forward to it. The Room is small, but the view is wonderful, and the large public bath has silky alkaline water that feels amazing. However, the shower stops after a short time, so you have to keep pressing it repeatedly, which is inconvenient. The dinner venue has changed to a darker space where meals are served, but honestly the taste and presentation used to be better. I loved how dinner used to let you enjoy fresh ingredients simply yet beautifully—along with the tableware and natural light. Breakfast was as delicious as ever. It’s also a shame there’s no open-air bath in the morning; I believe that has always been the case. Still, this is my favorite Accommodation in Matsushima, so I’m sharing this with hopes for continued improvement going forward.

    Great views, great food, and outstanding staff.

    This time, I stayed with my eldest son’s family and my daughter-in-law’s mother. It is a very popular Accommodation, so making a Reservation was difficult from the start, but they kindly accommodated changes to the number of guests. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of the view, but our Room offered a beautiful sunrise, which truly moved me. Above all, the meals were thoughtfully prepared and delicious. I was surprised that each person was served an entire kichiji fish. Our 3-year-old grandchild was thrilled with the yakisoba made in an individual hot pot and ate it enthusiastically. For dessert, we moved to another Room and enjoyed it at a relaxed pace. Even though everyone said they were already full, thanks to the pastry chef’s creative flavors, we ended up finishing everything. They also prepared seating where having a small child wouldn’t disturb other guests, and it was very comfortable as well—so we were extremely satisfied. The private bath had excellent shower facilities and a great view; going in the morning was perfect. Every staff member was wonderful, with natural smiles and warm greetings. I would love to stay again.

    The food was delicious.

    In addition to the stunning ocean view, every dish was delicious. Because each course was brought out freshly prepared, nothing—like the appetizers—had time to dry out, and everything was served at the perfect temperature and at its best. Breakfast was also served as a set meal rather than a buffet, and we were very satisfied with the wide variety of tasty Japanese dishes.

    We were completely satisfied with everything—the Room, the bath, the meals, and the service.

    My spouse and I, our daughter and son-in-law, and our 2-year-old grandchild (five of us in total) stayed here. From the warm welcome in the parking lot to check-in at the front desk, confirming any dislikes and allergies, the especially thoughtful care for our grandchild’s meals, guidance to our Room, welcome drinks in the lounge, and hospitality with matcha—everything was so comfortable that we were impressed from the start. Dinner served in our Room was carefully presented dish by dish. Our grandchild seemed very happy as well and stayed focused on eating, so we were able to relax and enjoy a delicious meal at an unhurried pace. The “Sea Jewels Rice” was so good we wanted seconds even when we were already full. The next morning, we were moved again by the view of Matsushima and the sunrise while soaking in the semi-open-air Onsen bath in our Room. We had breakfast in a very quiet dining area. There was a wide variety of dishes and everything was delicious—we ate so much that we didn’t need lunch (haha). From arrival to departure, everyone watched over us with constant kindness and warmth. It’s an Accommodation where you can truly feel at ease, knowing help is always there if needed. We will definitely return.

    The meals, the views, and the hospitality are all outstanding!

    Both dinner and breakfast were delicious Japanese meals with rich dashi flavor, and we were very satisfied. This trip was for my mother’s birthday, and even though we hadn’t mentioned it, you kindly served dessert with a birthday plate and candles. My mother was truly delighted—thank you. The location is excellent, and the view from the large public bath is wonderful. We also stayed in a Room with a massage chair, which worked very well and made our stay comfortable. We would love to visit again.

    I had a very comfortable stay.

    I made a Reservation looking forward to the Onsen and meals, and I was completely satisfied. The water had a slightly silky feel and was very pleasant, and I was lucky enough to have both the large public bath and the open-air bath all to myself at times. Dinner focused on quality over quantity, but it was still more than filling for me, and everything tasted delicious! Breakfast was also luxurious, served in a three-tiered box. Above all, this Hotel’s staff were outstanding. They thoughtfully arranged everything in advance—from guidance to booking my return bus—and answered every question smoothly. I had a truly comfortable stay.

    Second stay—this is the best accommodation.

    Thank you to the staff at Kofutei for being so friendly and exceptionally kind. The biggest reasons we decided to return were that every dish was delicious, and we could soak in the silky Onsen while enjoying a panoramic view of Matsushima. Since retiring, we’ve been enjoying Onsen trips about once a month, and Kofutei has become an Accommodation we’d like to visit about once a year.

    It was a Hotel that exceeded my expectations.

    We were completely satisfied with everything—the staff’s service and hospitality, the meals, the hot water, the spectacular view from our room, and the overall atmosphere of the Hotel. If we have a chance to visit Matsushima again, we would love to stay at Kofutei once more.

    It was very good.

    Everyone at the Accommodation was always smiling, and we were able to spend our time comfortably. All of the food was delicious, and I wanted to have the oyster gratin at home as well, but they do not offer delivery—takeout only—so I gave up. From the Room we could see the bridge and enjoyed a great view, and there were two sinks and two toilets. It was also wonderful to have a panoramic view of Matsuura Coast from the Facility’s footbath. And the shop had Shimobashira, which is hard to get. I had been asked to buy it as a souvenir, so I was glad I could purchase it without waiting in line. (There seems to be a limit of one per group, and only five are sold on weekdays. They also do not accept reservations or holds.) Because the Accommodation is located in a spot with great views, after sightseeing you will need to walk back up the hill to return. Thank you for a wonderful time.

    Enjoyed a relaxing stay at a traditional Ryokan.

    Stayed to enjoy a warm Onsen during the cold mid-January season. The ocean view of Matsushima Bay was stunning, and soaking in the bath after admiring it relieved all my travel fatigue. Dinner featured an array of fresh and delicious seafood, which I had been looking forward to. While most dishes were enjoyed with soy sauce and wasabi, options like grated wasabi, Date's flavorful salt, and matcha-infused salt added a delightful twist to the flavors. The ocean view could be fully appreciated from the east-facing side; however, views from the northeast to north faced neighboring properties, slightly breaking the immersion. The interior of the Room wasn’t luxurious but was well-maintained with no issues. In our 12-tatami Room, there was only one small trash bin provided—having an additional one would have been more convenient. The air conditioning system throughout worked perfectly without any noise from vents, allowing for a peaceful stay—it was very comfortable overall. In the Onsen area, labels for body soap and shampoo were small and easy to confuse with women’s cleansing soap. Clearer distinctions for women’s products would help avoid such mix-ups. The water temperature in the Onsen struck a perfect balance—not too hot or too lukewarm—making it tempting to soak endlessly! However, I did worry about overheating after staying in too long (laughs).

    Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Breakfast was particularly well-prepared, and the atmosphere in the separate restaurant for dinner was delightful. The bath was perfectly timed with sunrise, offering a view as beautiful as a painting. I would love to visit again when it gets warmer and I can explore the surroundings.

    Stayed with a family of four.

    No traditional Ryokan-style welcome. The front desk and reception were standard. We stayed in a room with a private bath, but the room felt small. Dinner was very delicious and excellent. Breakfast was average, without the impression of luxurious seafood, and the grilled fish was cold. The course for four people cost 220,000 yen, but we were surprised to be informed of an additional charge for the family bath considering the total payment amount.

    I was very disappointed. I reserved a room labeled as "Partial Ocean View," which I was not familiar with. The photos on the site seemed normal, so I didn't read the detailed description carefully. However, from the main window, all I could see was a parking lot and a construction site for an apartment building. Even if I had read the description thoroughly, the gap between reality and expectation is so severe that it feels misleading enough to file a complaint with JARO. The site mentions "land is partially included in the view," but most of what you see is land, and it's not even a beautiful landscape. Moreover, what they call "ocean" mostly consists of fishing ports/harbors and doesn't give off any oceanic vibe at all. Other photos on the site also seem heavily exaggerated. Although all staff members were very kind and pleasant, it was extremely disappointing overall.

    A place to stay that you'll want to visit again.

    For our annual family trip with my parents in their 80s and my sister, we decided to visit Matsushima this year. The onsen with a view of the sea left our skin feeling smooth, and the water was clean with just the right temperature. We enjoyed matcha tea, sweets, and local sake as a welcome drink, and freshly made dashi-maki tamago for breakfast, which added a touch of luxury to our stay. The meals were perfectly portioned and of excellent quality. The staff's attentiveness was remarkable—when my sister and I were heading to the elevator after using the bath, a young male staff member in his 20s quickly pressed the elevator button for us while carrying luggage and saw us off until the doors closed. It was such a subtle yet thoughtful gesture that made us feel completely relaxed both physically and mentally. I don't usually write reviews, but since both my sister and parents were so impressed, I decided to share this experience here.

    The service was excellent.

    A traditional Ryokan with a charming atmosphere and a great view of the sea, providing a pleasant stay. The staff offered thoughtful service, and the seafood dishes were extremely delicious with generous portions. Although the building is old, it was well-maintained. The Onsen was also very relaxing. In the Japanese-Western style room, there was a slight height difference between the beds and the tatami floor, which could be dangerous for elderly guests in dim lighting. It would be great if this could be improved in the future. We walked from Matsushima-Kaigan Station, but it felt a bit far; using the shuttle service might have been better. The location is convenient for sightseeing as places like Zuiganji Temple are within walking distance. The autumn leaves at Entsuin Temple were stunningly beautiful. The photo shows a sunset taken from our accommodation.

    I was able to show gratitude to my parents.

    To fulfill my father's wish to visit Matsushima, we requested a room with a panoramic view of Matsushima. The view from the room was absolutely breathtaking. The hospitality of the hotel staff was also impressive and commendable. Additionally, the meals were served freshly prepared, one dish at a time, allowing us to enjoy warm dishes while they were still hot and delicious. The only downside was that the large public bath had noticeable mold marks on the ceiling corners and felt cramped. The family open-air bath available by reservation also had shower booths for washing, which were slightly inconvenient to use. However, everything exceeded our expectations, and we would love to visit again. It was a wonderful experience that allowed me to make my father happy!

    I traveled to Tohoku and stayed here on the last day of my trip. The meals, onsen quality, service, facilities, and location were all excellent. If I may suggest, it would be great if both baths had open-air baths. My wife was also very satisfied. I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much.

    Healing Accommodation

    It was my first stay, and it was a wonderful accommodation as reputed. The staff were polite, had lovely smiles, and maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness. Although the building itself seemed old, it was impeccably clean, and the room's water facilities were renovated for a comfortable stay. The meals were absolutely delicious. Above all, the breathtaking view from the accommodation and the relaxing onsen were unforgettable. I was fortunate to reserve a private bath and enjoyed an unforgettable morning soaking in the onsen while watching the sunrise over Matsushima Bay. I would love to visit again for another healing trip. Thank you very much!
