The only choice: Hotel Okura Niigata

This stay allowed us to spend our limited time in great comfort. We were able to fully enjoy the rainbow, the night view, and the beautiful scenery from our Room, and we sincerely appreciate your Hotel’s warm hospitality. The edamame bread and watermelon bread we reserved were also very well received, and my whole family was delighted. Whenever we stay in Niigata, Hotel Okura Niigata will be our regular choice of Accommodation.

The Shinano River view did not offer a view of the fireworks.

I booked a “Shinano River View” Room hoping to watch the Niigata Festival fireworks from the Room—it would have been wonderful if we could see them. It was my mistake for not confirming, but “Shinano River View” did not mean “fireworks view.” The moment I entered the Room, there was a tall building standing in the direction where the fireworks would go up. When I asked at the front desk, they said they often get questions about whether the fireworks can be seen, but depending on where they are launched you might see a little—or you might not see them at all—so it may be better to watch while walking outside. I wanted to say, “Then why is this Shinano River View Room so expensive?!” But since I didn’t confirm at Reservation that “Shinano River View = fireworks view,” I accepted it as my own fault. In the end, we walked around town, found some lovely places, enjoyed wine, and watched the fireworks however we liked while strolling—so it was still fun. The breakfast buffet was delicious, especially the rice. As expected of Niigata Prefecture.

    To the Front Desk Staff

I made a last-minute Reservation for the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival and stayed here. In conclusion, the front desk staff were wonderful, and it was a lovely Hotel. On the first day we watched the fireworks, and on the second day we planned to sightsee around Niigata. I only briefly mentioned this in the notes when making my Reservation, but at check-in an older male staff member kindly brought us a couple of sightseeing maps and told us about nearby attractions. He even advised us on the best transportation options depending on where we wanted to go. His service and language were polite throughout, which made me feel very comfortable. The Hotel itself was clean and pleasant to stay in. At checkout, a younger female staff member also handled everything efficiently, which felt great. When I asked if they could call a taxi to Niigata Station, she immediately coordinated with staff outside the Hotel entrance and guided us smoothly. All of the staff greeted us with smiles. Although our stay was short, we had a very comfortable time. Thanks to the sightseeing maps and notes they gave us, our plans afterward went smoothly as well—I’m truly grateful. If I can come back for the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival next year or visit Niigata again for sightseeing, I would like to stay here again.

There is too much difference in comfort between room categories.

On this trip, I stayed for two nights booked through another site and one night booked through IKYU. For the Room reserved via Booking.com, the Hotel kindly upgraded me to a Room with a better view. Even though I checked in late at night, I was able to relax and stay comfortably. However, my stay from the IKYU Reservation was disappointing. The comfort level varied greatly depending on the Room grade (small and not clean). Because I went to bed late, I was woken up early in the morning by a male crew member speaking loudly about cleaning arrangements. The Room was also right in front of the elevator, so it was noisy and I could not relax. Since guests stay for many different reasons and situations, I would have appreciated more consideration. As the Room booked through IKYU was next to the elevator, I would like this to be avoided next time. As for dining, I had shaved ice and a parfait at the café. For dinner, I had eel, which was delicious. The next day, I had Chinese food for lunch and it was also very good. I also bought souvenirs such as a limited-edition watermelon melon bread. It was so good that I purchased it twice.

The Room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable. It was also very clean. Everything else was below expectations.

    ~A Trip for Two~

Hotel Okura— Because I had high expectations based on the name, I was a little surprised by how dated the Facility felt. You take basic amenities from the lobby. I was also surprised that the hair dryer was an older type. The young male staff member who guided us near the entrance was wonderful and truly stood out. His service left a strong impression on me.

I always stay here when I’m on a business trip. The Room is a bit old, but the wallpaper is clean and everything is well maintained, so I had a very comfortable stay. The breakfast curry and French toast are outstanding. Next year, I plan to stay here with my family during our summer vacation.

    Pride in Tradition

I stayed here as an alternative because the Hotel I usually use was fully booked for a group. The previous week, I had stayed at another Hotel along the Shinano River in a similar situation, and the Room was dusty and unhygienic, so I was worried this might be the same. However, that concern disappeared the moment my taxi arrived at the entrance. As soon as we pulled up, a staff member greeted me, carried my luggage, and guided me to the front desk. At check-in, they had already confirmed that I am a One Harmony member, so everything went smoothly. Because of my bad experience at the other Hotel, I was anxious about whether the Room would be clean—but this is Okura: housekeeping was thorough and everything was well maintained. It was disappointing that the Wi-Fi signal was weak and that it wasn’t a smart TV, but the amenities were well stocked and overall it was a very satisfying stay. I would like to stay again if I have another opportunity.

I was truly impressed by the hospitality.

I stayed here when attending a live show at the Prefectural Civic Hall. Although the Facility feels a bit dated, it is well maintained and I had no inconveniences. I was truly impressed by the hospitality of the staff—wonderful service you don’t often find in newer Hotels these days. The view from my Room was lovely, and the night scenery reflected on the river was very soothing. Breakfast was also very delicious. With Niigata Go To Travel and because it was a weekday, I was able to stay at a very reasonable rate. I’d like to stay again if I have another opportunity.

The view from the Room is beautiful.

I called with a question, but I was surprised to be spoken to in an intimidating manner without being listened to, and even had someone raise their voice at me. I was also surprised that a staff member at such a prestigious long-established Hotel would respond that way. Even so, the person who guided us to the parking area and the staff at check-in were pleasant, which was reassuring. The building felt old and somewhat dark, but the view from the Room of the Shinano River and Bandai Bridge was truly beautiful.

    Delicious cuisine

The Facility is old, but it was well maintained. However, the parking lot felt dirty. I didn’t want to drive my own car into it. The washlet is old. We replace ours every 7–8 years. Maintaining and using things for a long time is important, but it felt unhygienic and unpleasant. Breakfast was delicious, which was nice.

You can relax and feel at ease during your stay.

As the building is old, the overall Facilities feel a bit dated. However, everything is well cleaned, and the Room is spotless, so you can stay with peace of mind. The staff welcomed us warmly with smiles, reminding me once again that this is truly Okura. We chose Okura mainly for the excellent breakfast selection, and we enjoyed it at a relaxed pace. We would love to stay again.

    Every Okura is wonderful.

This was my first stay at Hotel Okura Niigata. While the property shows its age, it was clean, calm, and very comfortable. (I stayed for a live show at Toki Messe, and it was within walking distance.) I also dined at one of the Hotel restaurants, and everything was delicious. Everyone at the front desk had the polished, professional hospitality you would expect from Okura. It was a wonderful stay. Thank you very much.

The facilities are old, but the breakfast is delicious!

I arrived expecting to stay at “that Okura,” but… The in-room facilities—especially the bathroom—feel dated. The floor tiles are discolored and uneven, and the hot water takes a while to heat up. The bidet is not button-operated but a left-hand dial type, which is inconvenient. Even the room chair was frayed. When I asked at the front desk, “Where is the concierge?” I got a blank “Huh?” In response to my request for a dinner place with good sashimi, they called over an older lady who had been guiding guests to the elevator with “This way, please,” and she recommended a nearby restaurant as if chatting with a neighbor. When I finally found it after getting lost, I was told they do not accept walk-ins—Reservation only—which was disappointing. I went to bed feeling sad, thinking that despite the name Okura, this might be more like an ordinary local “Plaza Hotel.” However, breakfast was outstanding. The small dishes featuring Niigata flavors—such as squid shiokara cured in koji and mountain vegetables—were all delicious, and comparing two types of white rice was fun. Above all, the made-to-order omelet was perfect: efficient preparation, beautiful shape, wonderfully soft eggs—truly worthy of Okura. Walking from Niigata Station is a bit tough. Buses are not very frequent either. A taxi costs around 1,100 yen. This is my impression of whether it suits solo travelers—and whether it’s worth it if you can stay at “Okura” at IKYU’s special rate.

With Okura’s consistently high-quality service, this is undoubtedly Niigata’s best Hotel.

I’ve stayed at several city hotels in Niigata, and this Hotel is probably the most established of them all. From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed with warm smiles from the staff, and it immediately reminds you: this is Okura. The building itself feels its age, and you can sense some old-fashioned touches in the Room layout, but it has been renovated. There’s an in-room safe, and ice machines are available on each floor, so I didn’t find the Facility side inconvenient at all. Breakfast was excellent—crispy bacon, freshly prepared egg dishes like omelets made live, and a wide variety of Hotel-made breads. It all felt very “Okura,” and I was thoroughly satisfied. And since Niigata is one of Japan’s great rice regions, you can also enjoy delicious freshly cooked rice such as Koshihikari. I also appreciated that staff serve each bowl individually—another detail that shows their care. These days the area around Niigata Station seems to be developing more, while Furumachi feels a bit quieter—but there are still great places within walking distance, like the former Saito Family Residence Annex and a lovely cafe by Ijin Pond that was recently featured in CASA BRUTUS. My favorite Italian restaurant is also nearby. For me, if you’re staying in Niigata, Furumachi is still by far the best area—and this has become my go-to Accommodation. I’ve stayed with Okura in many places, but the hospitality here truly reflects “Okura quality,” which makes for a very reassuring stay. Above all, considering how reasonably priced it is compared with The whole country overall standards for Okura stays, I genuinely recommend this Hotel.

    Great value for money.

I had a pleasant stay at this cost-effective Business Hotel. Even with No Meals Included, Furumachi is nearby and there are plenty of restaurants, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding places to eat. A few things were disappointing: check-in was not handled smoothly, and I waited over 10 minutes due to mistakes by a staff member in training, with little support from the supervisor. At check-out as well, although I only needed to return the key, I still waited more than 10 minutes. I also noticed an outdoor employee smoking area where several staff members, including kitchen staff, were smoking in a manner that did not feel very professional. I have used their high-end buffets for decades, but during this stay I noticed several issues like those above and came away hoping they will better adapt to today’s expectations.

    Disappointed

With Mother’s Day coming up, I traveled from afar and brought my mother, thinking “If it’s Okura, it must be fine.” However, the Room had only two kinds of tea bags and water—no coffee. When I went to the vending machine to get coffee, it was out of order. I tried another floor, but there were only a few options. I gave up and went back to the Room, then went to get ice—also out of order. Isn’t that too many things out of service? There was no air conditioner in the Room, and there was no explanation as to whether it was centralized climate control. In a season when it’s hot during the day and cold at night, unclear temperature control is a problem. The toilet seat was cold as well—I even worried my elderly mother might have a shock from sitting on it. At night we could hear voices from the floor above, running water, and toilets flushing. Until after 2 a.m., we heard banging and loud stomping as if someone was causing a disturbance, and we couldn’t sleep. Even allowing for an older building, this felt far too severe. My mother said it was the worst Hotel she has ever stayed at, so it didn’t feel like I did anything nice for her. The only good thing was that the rice at breakfast was delicious.

    1) The amenities placed to the left of the counter are supposed to be free to take, but they were almost empty and most items were out of stock, so I asked for a refill. The older man behind me wanted coffee, but none was replenished, so he gave up and went back to his Room—I felt sorry for him. 2) The Room heater didn’t work and it was extremely cold. Since it was fully booked during Golden Week, I didn’t contact you because I couldn’t ask to change Rooms. It wasn’t a type where I could adjust the temperature myself, and it surprised me that Rooms like this still exist. 3) The Wi‑Fi was completely unusable. Even though I paid just under 30,000 yen during high season, it was truly frustrating. It didn’t connect even for a moment, and I had no idea what was happening. Not only me but also my friend who traveled with me couldn’t connect. Shouldn’t this be fixed? 4) Overall, the breakfast buffet was delicious. Being able to try different kinds of rice, as well as rice porridge and funori soba noodles among other options, made me feel great from the morning.

Perhaps this is unavoidable in a rural area, but I had some doubts about the “Hotel Okura” name. The Room Wi‑Fi kept cutting out and was inconvenient. Also, the loungewear had an odor and, to be honest, it was unpleasant. I have a few more minor points, but I don’t want to come across as a complainer. I can accept that the building itself is old, but I strongly felt that there should still be some Okura pride.

    I walked from the station.

About a 20-minute walk from Niigata Station. The Facility is old, but the Room overlooking Bandai Bridge is comfortable with a great night view. The bathtub is a bit slippery, which can be dangerous. There are many staff in the lobby, and it was impressive how they proactively offered help with luggage and taxis. Thank you for your hospitality.

It was a trip I was proud to be a member of.

As I wrote in the title, my wife and I were able to make truly wonderful memories together. Just as we had heard, this is a prestigious Hotel made possible by first-class hospitality. From check-in onward, you offered attentive yet unobtrusive care and warm words that lifted our spirits and beautifully turned our trip around after an unexpected setback right before arrival—my wife was deeply moved as well. You also kindly accommodated our last-minute request for a dining reservation and guided us with great care, making it an unforgettable dinner. Of course, we will be back. Thank you very much for your hospitality; we are sincerely grateful.

Traditional Hotel Hospitality and Breakfast Buffet

The staff’s perfectly timed greetings are wonderful. There are always staff in the lobby, and they speak to you politely. I’ve stayed at various Hotels in Niigata City, and the breakfast quality here is second to none. The lobby and hallways have a calm atmosphere. It’s hard to deny that the Room and Facility are old. If you care about Room comfort and modern Facilities, another Hotel might be better. If you value hospitality and the buffet, I highly recommend it. The parking lot also feels old-fashioned and is on the narrow side.

    Thank you for your support.

Breakfast was excellent. The service was very courteous, and it truly made me happy. However, the Facility felt old, and I couldn’t adjust things like the lights. Some amenities were not sufficiently replenished, so there was a gap compared to my expectations. It’s a shame. The pillow was uncomfortable and I asked to have it changed; I would be glad if you could offer options such as memory-foam pillows. I’d like to visit again, so if those points could be improved, it would be perfect.

A Hotel Where You Can Feel True Hospitality

With the rise of contactless procedures, more accommodations limit interactions with staff. However, at Hotel Okura, staff members are present throughout the facility, offering natural and memorable greetings. The balanced sense of distance combined with the refined hospitality unique to a traditional hotel made for a very comfortable stay. I believe guest satisfaction is greatly influenced by such subtle attentiveness. The breakfast was carefully prepared, and I was particularly impressed by the rice and French toast.

    For breakfast lovers

Niigata is full of delicious food, so I decided to stay for the breakfast. The room offered a view of the Shinano River and Bandai Bridge. Although the building is old, there were no issues with water pressure or temperature in the bathroom, which was great. From the breakfast venue's windows, you can see the Shinano River and cherry blossoms, making it likely to offer beautiful views in spring. As for breakfast itself, there was a wide variety of dishes featuring local cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, which was very satisfying. Okura’s signature French toast was also available at breakfast—a big plus! Unlimited Yasuda Yogurt made for an excellent morning meal as well.
