This was my third stay.
I stayed at the accommodation for the first time in about 10 years. I was looking forward to the large public bath and sand bath, but compared to last time, I felt disappointed with the meals and service. It’s a great accommodation, so it feels like a missed opportunity.

Could be short-staffed?
What could have been better: - Placing the luggage in the Room before arrival. - Adjusting the speed of serving meals. - While each dish was delicious, there was too much meat for the shabu-shabu. A tasting menu based on age groups might be better. Leaving guests wanting just a little more would be ideal. - Replacing used teacups after setting up futons would have been appreciated. What was great: - The sand bath and onsen were excellent. - The scenery was truly relaxing.

The Long-Awaited Sand Bath
In July, we decided to visit the sand bath my late mother had wanted to experience and also pay respects at our ancestors' graves. Due to booking late, we couldn't secure a room for three (father and two daughters) and instead reserved two rooms for two people each through the reservation site. Later, when contacting the Ryokan, we were informed that single occupancy in a double room was not allowed. However, they kindly accepted our reservation under the condition of paying for four people but receiving meals for three. As Kansai residents, we were slightly disappointed there was no discount available. Still, considering it was something my mother had wished for, we went ahead with the reservation. The bath facilities were impressively spacious and felt like a theme park. The sand bath exceeded expectations; as advertised, they took photos of us together as a group of three. For dinner that night—due to our late booking—the only option left was ramen, but it was delicious. One disappointing aspect occurred during checkout when we realized an hour into our journey home that the photo taken at the sand bath hadn't been handed over despite being told it would be given during payment. When contacting them around 9 PM—likely during their busy checkout period—the staff member who answered seemed dismissive with responses like "Yes? Yes?" in an abrupt tone. Even after explaining our situation about not receiving what we'd paid for and requesting postal delivery of the photo, their response lacked any apology or acknowledgment of fault: "Is this your address? Should I send it here?" My father became very upset while I tried to calm him down—it made for an awkward return trip home. The staff at the sand bath and other areas provided excellent service overall; however... this left us feeling conflicted. Seeing many staff members wearing "in training" name tags made me wonder if there might be staffing shortages—but as front desk personnel represent a Hotel or Ryokan's face—it’s important to ensure guests leave with positive impressions both upon arrival and departure!

A wonderful accommodation.
We chose Shiroyama Hotel after my father showed interest in the hotel featured in a TV drama, fulfilling our dream of visiting Ibusuki. The expansive grounds with beautifully maintained gardens and the relaxing atmosphere were truly satisfying. We enjoyed the sand bath experience and indulged in the Genroku-style bath. Above all, watching the stunning sunrise from the garden was unforgettable, especially as we shared this moment with my parents, whose honeymoon was also in Kagoshima. Dinner offered an abundance of Kagoshima's local flavors, and there was a great selection of souvenirs available. This is an accommodation I highly recommend to everyone!

We stayed here to conclude our journey across Kyushu.
We stayed here as the final accommodation of our week-long trip across Kyushu. The room was on the top floor of the annex, offering a stunning view, especially during sunrise, which was an unforgettable sight. The Onsen, sand bath, and various other facilities were impressively well-equipped; one night felt too short to fully enjoy them all. The food was delicious, though adding the Satsuma six-item platter made it a bit too much in terms of volume. It was our first time in Ibusuki, and choosing this accommodation turned out to be absolutely perfect.

It was my first visi...
It was my first visit in a while. This time, I traveled with my two young grandchildren. Due to their mother's sudden health issue, she couldn't join us, so it was just the father and grandparents staying together, which made me a bit worried. I'm relieved that we didn't cause any major inconvenience. Thank you very much. Although the children are still young, I wanted them to have their own meals and requested kids' meals in addition to the adult ones. The kids' menu was very elaborate and had such a large portion that even adults might struggle to finish it! Unfortunately, we ended up leaving quite a lot of food uneaten despite its quality, for which I feel sorry. The adult menu also had more than enough portions, so we couldn't help with what the children couldn’t finish either. It would be great if there were smaller portion options for both adults and children’s menus. As we age, it's harder to eat as much as when we were younger; food waste is concerning too but above all else, it feels disrespectful towards those who prepare such wonderful dishes. The Room was clean and comfortable, and the Onsen was incredibly relaxing!

Traditional Accommodation
Room: The room was too spacious for two people, but it was very comfortable. The view was great, and we were satisfied. Onsen: The Onsen was excellent. However, the distance from the room to the bath was far, and there were stairs before reaching the bath, which might be challenging for elderly guests. Meals: Dinner was Italian cuisine using many local ingredients; both the taste and atmosphere were outstanding. Breakfast was average. Staff: They were very good overall.

It was an enjoyable trip.
I chose this accommodation for the sand steam bath, but I also enjoyed the variety of relaxing baths in the large public bath. The meals were delicious, and the staff's hospitality was excellent. It made for a wonderful trip to Kagoshima. Thank you very much.

The sand bath was a ...
The sand bath was a unique experience that warmed the body from the core, and other baths were also excellent. I stayed in the annex, and surprisingly, it was next to the room used for a shogi match held at "Ibusuki Hakusuikan" in December 2022 (the 37th Ryuo Championship Game 6 between Ryuo Sota Fujii and 8-dan Yuki Sasaki, where Ryuo Fujii defended his title). The room design was almost identical, with a book documenting the event placed inside, which made it deeply moving. This December as well, Game 6 of the 38th Ryuo Championship is scheduled to be held near Hakusuikan at Satsuma Denshokan. In Hakusuikan's entrance lobby, there was also a large flag featuring Ryuo Fujii and Sasaki 8-dan displayed to enhance excitement for the match. The room had an ocean view with breathtaking scenery. The large garden along the coast featured numerous pine trees, and its illuminated night view was stunningly vivid. Meals made with plenty of local ingredients were hearty and incredibly delicious; I left completely satisfied. It is truly a historic accommodation I would love to visit again if given another opportunity nearby.

It was excellent, but...
The Room was spacious with a great atmosphere, excellent hospitality, and stunning views. The variety of baths was also exceptional. The staff were very kind and attentive, providing impeccable service. However, during dinner, one male staff member had an unusually strong body odor that was noticeable every time he brought food or drinks, which was unpleasant. Other than that, everything was truly outstanding.

Sand Bath
The service, meals, and sand bath were excellent, but getting around was challenging.

Meals
Dinner at the Hotel consisted of ramen, but the taste was slightly unsatisfactory. Additionally, the breakfast buffet does not match its price in terms of flavor. The desserts could use some improvement.

Enjoy a Relaxing Journey
Thank you very much. Relax in the sand bath and enjoy delicious meals. We had a relaxing and fulfilling trip. End your night at the accommodation with Menjiro noodles for a perfect finish. It will enhance your satisfaction.

Bath
This was my second visit. Thank you for the wonderful stay. It was a very comfortable Ryokan. However, I felt a bit embarrassed about the large bath, which is one of the highlights, as it is so spacious and visible from the second floor—this can be uncomfortable for women at any age. The sand bath was absolutely amazing. It feels like such a waste not to have a more moderately sized and relaxing bath to enjoy after the sand bath. The staff were very pleasant, and the garden was beautifully maintained.

Absolutely perfect!
A memorable trip with my son to celebrate his 20th birthday. It was our first visit to Kagoshima, and we enjoyed activities like the sand bath and shochu tasting. The room offered a stunning ocean view, allowing us to fully experience Kagoshima even within the accommodation. The staff were very kind, and we would love to visit this hotel again. Thank you!

Enjoy a sand steam bath and a full-course Italian dinner.
A highly satisfying one-night stay! The room was a Satsuma Guest Hall (Japanese-Western style), featuring two beds in the Western-style area and a separate Japanese-style room. Since no staff needed to come in to set up futons, it was easy to organize our belongings after entering the room, which delighted my wife. The sand bath is located within the accommodation. While there is an additional fee for its use, changing clothes and rinsing off the sand are simple, saving time and effort. There’s also an option for paid photo-taking during your sand bath experience, making it a memorable keepsake. For dinner, we chose "Ristorante Fenice" inside the Satsuma Denshokan Museum. The full-course meal included today’s amuse-bouche, soup, pasta, fish and meat dishes as mains, followed by dessert and drinks—all enjoyed over 1.5 hours. Not only was everything delicious but also perfectly timed with impeccable service from the staff—a true delight for our taste buds! The only downside might be that reaching the restaurant involves quite some walking distance; it could be challenging on rainy days. Still, we were thoroughly satisfied—thank you for such a wonderful meal! On our way back to the room, we discovered Satsuma Shochu "Mori-Izo" at a souvenir shop—and of course—we bought it! This hotel boasts expansive grounds with beautifully maintained gardens perfect for strolling around. You can even see Sakurajima across the sea—a truly satisfying stay overall! Thank you so much to everyone who took care of us during this visit!

A Showa-era Ryokan where foreign trainees provide service. Where is this place?
I chose this place expecting to enjoy a sand bath indoors, but the experience was disappointing from the moment I parked my car in front of the entrance. When I arrived at 5:00 PM, nearby parking spaces were full, and as I hesitated about where to park, I was told to "move quickly," which felt rude and unwelcoming for a guest. The guidance to the guest room was provided by a foreign trainee who struggled with directions in what felt like a maze-like building. Even when asking for clarification, their response lacked clarity. At the sand bath area, there were no explanations about how it worked; after my wife changed clothes, there was still no information about security boxes or photo-taking procedures. For dinner, we ordered a black pork shabu-shabu course but found it overly greasy because they used pork belly shaped into roses instead of just loin cuts—leaving us unable to finish it. All of this happened within just three hours of our stay. Additionally, the bubble-era architecture made navigation inefficient and time-consuming due to its maze-like layout. Having had high expectations because this location is sometimes used for professional shogi matches only added to our disappointment. I would never stay here again. For most people experiencing an indoor sand bath is likely once-in-a-lifetime; however, there was absolutely no sense of hospitality or "omotenashi" spirit here—it left me deeply disappointed. Assigning trainees made me wonder if we were treated poorly because we booked through IKYU at a lower rate. Lastly, be aware that power outlets in the guest rooms are loose—I failed to charge my devices properly during my stay!

There may not be a third stay.
This was our second stay in 11 years. We stayed as a family of four adults for one night with two meals included. We stayed in a Japanese-style room at Isokyakuden, but the room felt old, and apart from the hinoki bath with natural hot spring water, we were not very satisfied. We chose a sea-facing room, but being on the second floor and obstructed by pine trees, the view was not great. Additionally, the staff member who guided us to our room upon arrival was foreign and their explanation in Japanese was hard to understand. At that price point, having an additional charge for sand bath Onsen felt unreasonable. Including at least one session per stay in the accommodation fee would prevent guests from feeling surprised by extra charges. Furthermore, we found many small insects on the bathroom sink in our room when we woke up in the morning, and their response to this issue was inadequate. The day before this stay, we had stayed at a newly opened Resort Hotel for about half the price; its amenities and room design were far superior. I believe older accommodations like this will struggle against newer facilities moving forward. Without its sand bath Onsen feature, I don't think I would choose to return here. The only highlight of our stay was dinner—a standard kaiseki meal—which was very satisfying; however, breakfast was just average.

Great view
The view and cuisine are excellent. The dishes are creatively prepared and highly satisfying. On the other hand, the hospitality and service are average. There is some inconsistency in staff performance. While polite on the surface, some staff members lack attention to detail, so it may not be ideal for those who prioritize high-level manners.

Ibusuki Hakusuikan
【Positive Points】 - Spacious room with a wonderful view. The garden was beautifully maintained and very pleasant. - The sand bath experience available within the facility was enjoyable. - Meals were part of an additional dish plan, offering a substantial amount of food. The flavors had a sweet touch typical of Kyushu, featuring seasonal and local dishes that made for an excellent dining experience. Additionally, during dinner, one staff member (an elderly woman) carefully checked if the glass for cold water was placed too close to the heat source by feeling the temperature with her hand before setting it down. Her kind words and demeanor left a lasting impression in terms of service quality. 【Negative Points】 - I got bitten by mites in two places on my legs during the night, which became itchier after bathing in the onsen due to improved blood circulation—this was unpleasant. Because of this, I would deduct from what would have been 5 stars for the room rating; perhaps it was just bad luck. - There were no vending machines in the detached building where we stayed, which felt inconvenient. Also, the scent of sandalwood incense inside that building was quite strong. ----------- This trip served as both a celebration for my father's retirement and my eldest son's birthday—a long-awaited stay at "the Ryokan." The accommodation is vast! It had that sense of exploration unique to large ryokans, making our stay enjoyable. The onsen facilities were spacious as well. Although scaffolding had been set up due to renovations at that time, it didn’t bother me personally. While being guided to our room and given instructions about our stay by foreign staff members is perfectly fine, having slightly better communication skills would have been appreciated—but their hard work truly came across clearly; they are amazing! Lastly... This isn’t something against the accommodation itself nor does it qualify as part of this review per se—but when I tried opening my window in the morning only to find someone smoking on their balcony next door—it ruined things momentarily! Guests should adhere strictly to rules too. Despite some minor misfortunes here and there overall—it turned out to be a good stay!

More than satisfied for the price.
I experienced a sand bath for the first time at Ibusuki Hakusuikan, and the gentle heat and weight of the sand gradually spread throughout my body, providing relaxation beyond my expectations. The sensation of warming up from deep within is truly addictive. The accommodation was clean, and the staff's attentive service made for a comfortable stay. For dinner, I thoroughly enjoyed Kagoshima's local delicacies such as black pork shabu-shabu and satsuma-age. Both the taste and portion sizes were perfect, enhancing the joy of my trip even more. If I visit Ibusuki again, this is definitely an accommodation I'd love to stay at once more.

It was a wonderful accommodation.
The Onsen was as spacious as expected and never crowded, allowing for a pleasant bathing experience at any time of the day. The view from the room was breathtaking. We chose a plan with breakfast only, but having a ramen shop inside the facility was a great point for families with children. Our kids enjoyed both the Onsen and the pool, making it a memorable summer vacation.

It was a very comfortable accommodation. I stayed here about 15 years ago and had a great experience, so I decided to stay again. Wonderful yet disappointing.
I have been a loyal guest for 20 years, staying at the Rikyu. The beautiful views, stunning gardens, and renowned onsen always provide relaxation. However, the atmosphere of the accommodation has changed over time. A few years ago, summer was lively with child-friendly events while still maintaining an elegant and spacious ambiance. Recently, I have noticed a decline in service quality with each stay. While challenges like aging facilities and staff shortages may be significant, issues such as no front desk number on the phone, outdated maps showing closed facilities like Akouga, malfunctioning air conditioning, lack of bedside lamps could be addressed promptly. The meal was black pork shabu-shabu served in a private room; it was average at best. The roasted seaweed at breakfast was damp. Overall dining quality does not match the pricing structure. It seems this historic accommodation is losing its identity between its past as a large family-oriented onsen facility and its current shift towards luxury branding. This is an iconic establishment well-known throughout Kagoshima—please keep striving! I will visit again soon!

I hope to visit again someday.
Stayed here on the last day of our Kagoshima trip. The accommodation offers a sand bath within the facility, and the spacious baths were excellent. All staff members were very attentive, making it a pleasant two-day stay. The meal portions, especially the pork shabu-shabu, were quite large; perhaps slightly smaller portions would allow guests to enjoy every bite until the end. It was an accommodation I’d love to visit again someday. Thank you!

The sand bath is amazing.
I experienced sand bathing for the first time, and I loved the feeling of the warm sand gradually heating my body. The large public bath was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with excellent amenities. The hairdryers were also new. The staff provided attentive service and sent me off with a warm smile at the end.

We were deeply grateful for the thoughtful arrangements during our meal, including celebratory wine, grilled sea bream, red rice, and even a festive chanchanko. It was excellent.
We stayed as a three-generation family during our trip home. The staff kindly arranged adjacent Rooms for us and provided a Room close to the elevator for a family member with back issues, which was very considerate. The dinner portions were quite large, and we ended up leaving some food; smaller portions might be preferable. As for the pork shabu-shabu, it was inconvenient to have to place raw meat and vegetables into the pot ourselves while managing chopsticks separately, especially since the solid fuel's heat weakened quickly. My elderly father forgot to use separate chopsticks and added meat after the heat had diminished, leading to mild discomfort the next day. While it was our mistake regarding chopstick usage, it might be better in the future if ingredients are pre-placed in the pot before heating. The food was very delicious overall, and we would love to stay again!
