    From the moment I entered the Hotel, it smelled wonderful and had a great atmosphere. Staying at the Manpei Hotel I had always admired was amazing.

    A truly wonderful place

    This was my first stay since the renovation. Behind its wonderful long-standing traditions and beauty, it also offers new Facilities that make for a truly comfortable stay—an exceptional place. I could really feel Karuizawa’s history and enduring strength, and that this is a resort in a class of its own, representing Japan. It was a truly rare and valuable experience. Thank you very much. I look forward to staying again next time as well.

    Staying for a birthday trip

    We stayed at the Alps Wing Classic Premier Room with dinner and breakfast, combining a classic hotel visit with a birthday celebration. It was such an outstanding experience that it made us feel not “If we go to Karuizawa, we want to stay at Manpei Hotel,” but “We want to go to Karuizawa in order to stay at Manpei Hotel.” After parking and walking outside with our suitcase, a staff member noticed me from afar right away, hurried over, and carried our luggage for us. A young female staff member escorted us to our Room. She had a wonderful smile, and even after we arrived she carefully explained the in-room facilities and amenities, which showed the high quality of the Hotel’s training. I also saw her serving during dinner—she moved briskly and efficiently. It has been about a year since the Hotel renovation, but the Room was kept beautifully clean. The Classic Premier is 48 m², so even with suitcases open around the bed area it didn’t feel cramped. Turndown service is available between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. After dinner starting at 5:30 pm we had drinks at the bar, and when we returned around 8:00 pm pajamas had been placed on the bed and chocolates were set on the cabinet in front of the TV. The trash bins had also been refreshed, used bath towels collected, and replaced with new ones. This kind of thoughtful attention to detail is exactly what makes Manpei Hotel special. For dinner, we asked in advance to switch to the Alps Wing 90th Anniversary Dinner. Everything was truly delicious—especially the steamed lobster (vapeur) and grilled Shinshu Wagyu beef; both were exceptional thanks to great ingredients paired with flavorful sauces. After dinner we also enjoyed drinks at the bar. A female bartender explained each menu item in detail, so we ordered “Karuizawa Light” and their 90th anniversary cocktail “Alps Lemonade.” Some hotel bars charge a cover fee or automatically serve nuts/snacks depending on where you go, but there was neither here—perfect for those who just want a casual drink. We used the café twice and ordered apple pie, scones, seasonal tartlets, their 90th anniversary parfait, royal milk tea (milk tea), and Japanese black tea with apple flavoring. We were also able to sit in John Lennon’s favorite seat. At breakfast there wasn’t one hand towel provided for one person and some of the service felt slightly awkward; however their sincerity came through clearly. For us it was minor compared with how satisfied we were overall. The souvenirs were beautifully designed as well—we ended up buying lots before heading home.

    It was a truly memorable stay.

    Three friends from our school days made a Reservation to celebrate a 60th birthday. You left a congratulatory letter in our Room, and all three of us were truly touched. You also added a special message plate to the dessert at dinner, which moved us again. We ended up lingering over both dinner and breakfast because we couldn’t stop chatting, but the staff never rushed us and kindly refilled our tea, allowing us to forget everyday life and relax completely. The Room was spotless, and we enjoyed a long soak in the bath as well. Thank you very much. We hope to stay healthy and visit again as the same three friends. Thank you again—every member of the staff was wonderful.

    Family Trip

    I stayed at the Manpei Hotel with my daughter. We had made a Reservation for sukiyaki for dinner and enjoyed it in a separate building. It was so delicious that we finished everything. After dinner, we spent time at the bar, where they also made us a tasty non-alcoholic cocktail. We enjoyed their famous apple pie as well. For breakfast, they prepared both Japanese and Western options, and my daughter—who doesn’t like Western food—was very satisfied. The Hotel and our Room were clean, and the stained glass in the hallway was beautiful. Thanks to all of this, we had a wonderful trip. Thank you very much. I would like to stay again when I have the chance to visit Karuizawa.

    It was quiet and nice.

    I won’t say which country, but there were no foreign guests at all, so it was very quiet and time seemed to pass slowly. It’s a wonderful Hotel.

    Thank you for taking...

    Thank you for taking care of us over the weekend in the last week of June. Although it was the rainy season, Manpei Hotel is surrounded by fresh greenery, so we were able to spend a calm and relaxing time. Compared with our visit during the pre-opening of Atagokan two years ago, the staff seemed more lively and engaged in their work, and thanks to your thoughtful attention in many ways, we had a truly wonderful stay. Thank you very much. The Bar wasn’t open last time, so we visited for the first time on this trip; both the atmosphere and the staff’s service were excellent, and the whisky selection was just what you would expect from a classic hotel. This time we stayed in Usui-kan, which had a different classic charm from Atago-kan. In particular, we loved the decorative glass used as room dividers—on closer look, each piece was different and beautiful. Next time, we would like to stay in Alps-kan.

    I stayed at Usui-kan, and the classic atmosphere of the building and Room was wonderful. Unfortunately, the weather was bad, so it was a shame I couldn’t take a walk around the Hotel.

    A Hotel You’ll Want to Visit Every Year

    My wife and I stayed again this year around the same time as last year. Just as before, thanks to the warm and courteous service from the front desk and all staff, we had another truly wonderful stay. The renovated interior remains comfortable and spotless, allowing us to relax in a calm atmosphere. The breakfast was as delicious as ever, and we were very satisfied once again.     This was our second stay, following last year.

    After the renovation, we stayed at Atagokan for the first time last October and thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen, even though it is a recirculating system. This year, we are staying for two nights in June during rose season. Manpei is a Hotel we are completely satisfied with—the food is delicious, the beds are spacious, and the hospitality is excellent. We also appreciate having a Japanese breakfast on the second morning. The bathroom amenities are high-end as well, so there’s really nothing to complain about. My husband and I would like to continue looking forward to our once-a-year two-night, three-day stay here.

    Thank you for staying with us again this year.

    There’s a reassuring sense of consistency every year. Each time I step into the lobby, I feel a nostalgic “I’m home.” The in-Room Onsen was also wonderful. One disappointing point is that the Japanese restaurant is gone. The Western menu is delicious and there is also “Keyaki” in the annex, but for my elderly mother, having Western dishes and meat-based meals for both lunch and dinner every time seems difficult. I would love to be able to enjoy Japanese-style kaiseki cuisine again, like the former “Yugyoan.” We will definitely visit again next year as well, so to all the Hotel staff, please take good care and stay well.

    My mother and I stayed here for the first time in 49 years—since I was a baby. Over 49 years, there have been happy times and sad times, and with all of that, staying at the unchanged Mampei Hotel felt deeply moving for my elderly mother. We stayed in an Atago Wing Twin Room, and since we don’t have a car, we chose the plan with dinner and breakfast included. Being able to enjoy the Onsen in our Room at any time was truly wonderful. Dinner was French cuisine; it might feel a bit small for some men, but my elderly mother and I enjoyed it very much. Breakfast is Western-style, but although limited in number, we were grateful to be able to choose a Japanese set as well. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the same atmospheric dining room—it felt like stepping back in time. It’s about a 10-minute walk to Karuizawa’s shopping street, so we could enjoy a stroll. After returning to the Hotel, we also had their famous milk tea and apple pie at the café. There is a reassuring sense that everything is still there as it always has been. Even after the renovation, all of the staff are working hard, and it truly felt like every guest was there because they wanted to stay at Mampei Hotel. It was an excellent Hotel—if possible, I would love to make it our regular Accommodation.

    A Classic Hotel for Our 4th Wedding Anniversary

    We chose Manpei Hotel for our wedding anniversary stay, as my wife had long wanted to visit. At first we considered the Atago Wing with an Onsen, but decided on the Usui Wing Classic because it has a terrace and a clawfoot bathtub. It has been just under two years since the renovation, and everything—throughout the building and in the room—was spotless and comfortable. The room felt more spacious than its size suggests. It was our first time using a clawfoot bath, which was a real highlight (we imagine it must be challenging to maintain given details like tile grout, but we hope you will continue to preserve this wonderful level of cleanliness). My wife especially loved the in-room shampoo and conditioner so much that we bought them at the shop. It would have been perfect if bath salts had also been provided. The staff service, the food, and even the tableware were more than satisfying for us as non-professionals—and above all, what stood out was how refined and considerate the other guests were (if we may say so), which made us feel at ease throughout our stay. Our only regret is that we couldn’t make it to the bar due to fatigue from work the day before and being too full from dinner outside. We would love to return if we have another opportunity.

    Golden Wedding Anniversary Trip

    We chose the Karuizawa Manpei Hotel, where we stayed on our honeymoon, as the destination for our golden wedding anniversary trip. This time, we treated ourselves to a two-night stay in the Alps Building Classic Premium. From check-in to check-out, we had a very satisfying three days. In particular, after dinner on the first night, a cake with a “Happy 50th Anniversary” message plate was brought out as a surprise. We were both truly delighted and moved. After returning to Osaka, when my wife mentioned the surprise during dinner with our eldest daughter’s family, our daughter said, “I arranged it.” So it wasn’t actually a surprise from the Hotel. Of course we are grateful to all the staff who helped make it happen, but I wish someone had simply said, “This is a gift from your daughter.” That was the only thing that was very disappointing.

    The Room with a private Onsen was excellent.

    My husband and I stayed here to celebrate both of our 60th birthdays and our 30th wedding anniversary. Since we had mentioned this in advance, a message card from the Hotel was left in our Room, which made us very happy. Thank you to everyone at the Hotel. We stayed in a Room with a private Onsen, and it was truly comfortable—we were able to relax both body and mind. We could enjoy the Onsen whenever we liked, cool off on the terrace if it got too warm, then rest on the bed. As an Onsen-loving couple, it felt almost like we were here for therapeutic hot-spring bathing. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. For dinner, we chose the wine pairing: four wines are served to match the dishes, and we were able to share them between two people, which was perfect. Four full glasses would have been too much for us, but since they were served as half portions, we could enjoy them alongside each course. After checkout, we also enjoyed apple pie and milk tea on the café terrace—very satisfying. This time, the fresh greenery around the Hotel and in the courtyard was especially beautiful. It was a wonderful stay that made us want to visit again in another season.

    The property had bee...

    The property had been renovated and was very clean. The staff were also polite and professional. Atogakan’s Onsen was better than expected, and it was surprisingly convenient to always have water at a comfortable temperature without needing to fill the tub each time. Waiting for it to fill can be a hassle, and if it isn’t ready when you want to bathe, you may end up skipping it altogether. Also, while the bathroom area felt quite humid, it left a good impression that the guest rooms stayed pleasantly dry. The main dining room seemed tastier in the past… It was certainly good, but not “exceptional,” and I sensed some cost-related limitations.

    Manpei is always a great choice.

    It was my first stay in decades. Last time I came with two small children; this time, as grandparents. The Room’s atmosphere hadn’t changed at all— it may have even been upgraded a bit. I was able to spend a very nostalgic and luxurious time. I’d like to visit again.

    My First Impression of the Long-Awaited Manpei

    It seems the Hotel has been renovated, so it may have lost a bit of its old charm, but it was still wonderful. I made a Reservation for a Room with a terrace, and waking up each day surrounded by the forest and breathing in the fresh green air was amazing. As for the food, I don’t have much experience with French cuisine, so it’s hard for me to judge the flavors, but the restaurant itself was lovely. One small disappointment was the service. It was my birthday on check-in day, but there was no message from the front desk or in my Room such as “Happy birthday—have a great day!” I wasn’t expecting anything special, but this kind of thoughtful touch would definitely make guests happy and might make them want to come back again. There’s still room to grow.

    Stay at the Hotel of Your Dreams

    A place and Hotel I had wanted to visit for a long time. We took advantage of a great-value Plan after the renovation and visited as a couple. It was also one month early for our wedding anniversary. Although we weren’t expecting anything special, it was a little disappointing that there was no acknowledgment at all. During our stay, we were able to relax and fully enjoy ourselves with the two-meal plan included. The classic atmosphere and the warm hospitality from the staff truly felt worthy of Manpei Hotel. We couldn’t make it in time for the apple pie in the lounge, but we would love to visit again when we have another chance. The Onsen was wonderful. Thank you very much for a lovely time.

    All set!

    This was my 7th stop on a classic Hotel journey. Last autumn, when I visited the café, I had already enjoyed the lobby, but this time I was really looking forward to the Room I had reserved well in advance (Atago Wing with Onsen terrace). The Room was just as wonderful as I had imagined, and having a free-flowing Onsen that I could enjoy anytime was fantastic. The woman who showed me to the Room felt very fresh and made a good impression. However, there were a few moments where her wording caught my attention. She repeatedly used the phrase, “this one here…” At the front desk, I was told there would be turndown service. I assumed it would be done while we were at dinner, so I was surprised when they came before that (since towels and amenities were still almost unused). Dinner was also very delicious. For breakfast, one of us chose the Japanese set meal; it came with many side dishes and felt more varied than the Western option—almost enough to make me jealous. Overall, we were extremely satisfied. I would love to visit again in autumn during the fall foliage season. Thank you very much.

    A Highly Satisfying Pilgrimage Experience

    Karuizawa Manpei Hotel is famous as a place associated with John Lennon of The Beatles. I had long admired it, and this was my first stay. Although I expected a long-established Hotel used by celebrities to feel somewhat impersonal, every member of the staff welcomed me warmly with heartfelt, attentive hospitality, making it an unforgettable and fulfilling stay. In particular, I am grateful to Mr./Ms. M at the front desk, Mr./Ms. W from the bell staff, and the housekeeping team for Room No. 8. When making my Reservation, I wrote that I would love to hear any episodes related to John Lennon. At check-in, Mr./Ms. M gave me a letter describing John and Manpei Hotel in detail—I was so moved I nearly cried! Mr./Ms. W from the bell staff also told me about authentic photos of the Lennon family displayed in areas only guests can see, as well as the Room where they stayed. I also had a chance to speak with housekeeping staff; I’m sorry for taking their time while they were working. I also mentioned (rather boldly) that this trip was to celebrate my birthday, and there were sweets and a message on the table in my Room. At dinner, dessert came with a chocolate celebration plate as well. I chose rosé wine with dinner, and it was very easy to drink. The turndown chocolates I requested during dinner were original to the Hotel; they contained figs and had a fruity flavor. The hair dryer was ReFa. I was also able to see the piano that still felt as if Lennon’s spirit remained within it—an utterly blissful moment that brought back the excitement of my youth. My sincere thanks again to everyone on staff. Thank you very much.

    Highly satisfied

    We stayed one night at this dream Accommodation and invited my parents. My mother was moved by John Lennon’s piano. My father really liked the in-room Onsen and enjoyed a long soak. I was happy to see them both so pleased. The Room was very clean, and the slippers were wonderfully plush. The Onsen bath was exceptional, and I’m truly glad we chose this Room. Breakfast was also great—the venue was beautiful, and the atmosphere alone felt satisfying. The apple jam was delicious, so I even bought some at the shop as a souvenir. I’d love to stay here again someday.

    A great Hotel for a relaxing stay in Karuizawa.

    This was my final visit using the Classic Hotel Passport. As it has only recently been renovated, the Hotel’s interior is very clean, and you can enjoy a comfortable stay. When I first entered the Room, I thought it was quite ordinary, but as I stayed there, I realized how cozy it felt. I think it’s a great Hotel not just for one night, but for staying several nights and fully enjoying life in Karuizawa. Personally, I’d love to spend all day reading in the lounge with its rocking chairs... The paired wine matched the dishes very well, making for a delicious dinner, but the food itself was probably just satisfactory. Given that the Accommodation rates are on the higher side, my expectations may have been too high. The staff were very pleasant, and there’s no doubt that this also contributed to a comfortable stay.

    It was a wonderful Hotel. The service from the front desk and restaurant staff was very pleasant, and I got the impression that this is a company with a great culture. The food was also delicious. The Room was very clean, and choosing one with a bath was absolutely the right decision. Just two points: for turndown service, I wish my preferred dining time had been shared in advance. Also, when using the terrace café, the Service Fee was not clearly itemized on the receipt and seemed to be included in the meal price, which felt a bit unclear. If a Service Fee applies, shouldn’t it be listed as “Service Fee”? At many overseas Hotels it is often itemized that way, so I also felt it may be especially confusing for international guests. The royal milk tea was excellent.

    I had only used the café and restaurant before, but I finally stayed here. This is a rare Hotel where the stay itself becomes the purpose of your trip. The staff provided warm, excellent hospitality. Dinner and breakfast were also lightly seasoned, gentle on the body, and delicious. Next time, I’d like to stay in a different building as well.
