We had a wonderful time at this Hotel.

I had long wanted to stay at Manpei Hotel at least once. Surrounded by forest, the Hotel’s quietly dignified exterior and entrance create a wonderful atmosphere. From the start, the staff who welcomed us made us feel at ease with service that was courteous yet never stiff. Our Room in the Atago Wing had an Onsen, and my wife was especially happy that she could soak and relax whenever she liked. Sitting on the terrace chairs and spending quiet time gazing at the trees also became a very Karuizawa-like memory—an escape from everyday life. The dinner course was perfect in both flavor and portion size for us as an older couple, and everything—including the service—was excellent. We also visited the bar, where we enjoyed warm hospitality and delicious, easy-to-drink cocktails, ending the day on a pleasant note. The American breakfast was also wonderful, and we were lucky to be seated with a view of the garden. There are many things to love about this Hotel, but above all are its classical presence that reflects its long history and the heartfelt hospitality of everyone who works there. I believe these two qualities are what make Manpei Hotel so appealing—and what makes me want to return. Finally, I had been interested in this Hotel for some time as one associated with John Lennon, but after actually staying here, I felt I understood a little more why he cherished spending time with his family here—as a father and husband.

A luxury Hotel worthy of the name Manpei

As the title suggests, I felt this was a top-class Hotel in every respect—guest rooms, service, baths, and dining. In particular, I thoroughly enjoyed the Classic Dinner, savoring its carefully crafted colors and flavors down to the finest details. Rather than resting on tradition alone, the Hotel embraces changing times as well, which I believe is why it continues to captivate people today.

At Alps-kan, the Room windows can be opened for fresh air and comfortable ventilation.

This was my fifth stay, and this time I had a three-night Multiple Night Stay in the Alps Building. I’ve stayed in Usui and Atago before, so I was looking forward to the Alps Building because of its history. However, during my stay I could smell curry from the kitchen downstairs coming into the bathroom, which made me feel unwell. The smell lingered throughout my entire stay... The Room I stayed in was also small, and I personally prefer the more modern Usui Building because it’s more spacious. The service is reliable—requests made for the Room are properly noted and reflected for future stays. That said, it’s disappointing that the Hotel staff seem to change every time, and some respond like part-time workers. The shuttle bus runs frequently, and the location is quiet with a dignified atmosphere, so I may consider staying again.

I’d love to experience all the different seasons.

Visited as part of a classic Hotel tour. The historic building had a wonderful atmosphere, and every staff member was gentle, courteous, and kind. I asked to change my dinner to the Classic Dinner, and it was absolutely delicious—thank you very much. At the bar, the bartender was very pleasant, and time flew by. The Hotel’s location is also within walking distance of Old Karuizawa Ginza, making it convenient for sightseeing. Next time I’d like to book a Multiple Night Stay. The summer greenery was beautiful, but I’d love to see the snowy scenery as well.

    As expected of Mr. Manpei!

On a previous trip to Karuizawa, a taxi driver told me, “Mampei is great,” so I’d been wanting to visit someday. This time, I joined the Classic Hotel membership program and made a Reservation to celebrate our wedding anniversary and catch the summer outlet sale. Using the lunch voucher I received through the program, we enjoyed a set lunch course, and then had their popular apple pie in the cafeteria. I also learned for the first time that John Lennon stayed here for three years. My husband works in architecture, so we stayed in the Alps Wing. The bathroom areas had been renovated and were very clean. The Room was very spacious—possibly the largest of any classic Hotel we’ve stayed at so far. There’s also an Accommodation voucher as part of the next membership benefit, and Mampei is on our shortlist. Above all, the service was excellent!

    My expectations were too high.

Although we were greeted upon arrival at the Hotel, no one offered to carry our luggage. When I asked whether we should carry it ourselves, I was told “yes.” At most Accommodations where I have stayed, luggage is usually carried to the front desk regardless of size or quantity, so I was a little surprised by this response at a prestigious Hotel. It may have been because it was only a short distance and our bags were not very large. What concerned me most was that there were large scuff marks on two areas of the Room floor that looked like they had been caused by dragging furniture. The Room itself was lovely, but it was disappointing every time my eyes caught them. They may be recent, but leaving such noticeable marks as they are did not seem appropriate. It is common for the bath, toilet, and sink area to be grouped together, but I wish each area had more privacy. The bath area was completely exposed, and because the toilet door is frosted glass, when one person is using it the other has to wait outside, which was inconvenient. I believe there is supposed to be a dress code in the main dining room, but I saw guests wearing T-shirts and shorts. Is there any point in having a dress code? The dinner course was tasty but nothing stood out in particular, and breakfast was average. Also, we would have appreciated being seated where we could see the garden for either dinner or breakfast. I apologize for focusing on negative points only; it’s because we had high expectations and were really looking forward to our stay. I understand that prices are higher during peak season, but overall it did not feel like an Accommodation experience worth that price.

    I had a wonderful birthday.

We felt the thoughtful attention in our Room and at the restaurant, and my wife and I were able to enjoy a wonderful birthday. The Facility had the charm of a classic Hotel while offering the comfort of a Resort Hotel, and we thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen at Atagokan. If we have another chance to visit Karuizawa, we would love to stay again.

    Family Trip

We stayed here for our family trip during the summer holidays. The staff were very attentive, and we enjoyed a relaxing time. The bath in our Room was an Onsen, which was also wonderful. As this is a classical Hotel, it may be asking too much, but we think it would be great if there were a large public bath and a sauna.

    I stayed at Atagokan...

I stayed at Atagokan with an Onsen. It’s great to have a bath you can use anytime. I was able to relax and enjoy it again this time. I had breakfast on the terrace seating overlooking the garden. Unfortunately, it was raining, but the view, the meal, and the service all made me feel like I was truly in Karuizawa, and I was very satisfied.

    Summer Family Trip

This was our first family trip to Karuizawa. Our 3- and 2-year-old sons enjoyed the nature and the fresh air they don’t usually get to experience. Early in the morning, the sunlight filtering through the trees by the window and the sound of cicadas washed away our physical and mental fatigue. The historic building and refined hospitality left a strong impression on us. We were a little surprised when a staff member told us there had been a nearby bear sighting. It was also a trip that reminded us how important the weather is in Karuizawa.

The restaurant staff could be improved.

I have stayed at this wonderful historic Hotel several times. However, I felt there is significant room for improvement among the restaurant staff. In the main dining room, staff wearing headsets were speaking loudly right next to guests to relay messages, which is not appropriate for a calm, historic Hotel. At the Japanese breakfast venue, when I asked at the entrance whether it was okay to enter with my shoes on, I was told “Sure” without even making eye contact. After being shown to the second floor, there were no tables set anywhere and I wasn’t sure what to do. Then I was told, “We’re about to set them up now—please sit wherever you like.” Since Japanese breakfast requires a Reservation in advance, they should know how many parties are coming and have tables prepared. Honestly, it also made me wonder when (or if) the table had last been wiped down. The breakfast items served also didn’t fit well on the table, and there were two identical spoons provided unnecessarily (I later learned one was for coffee). Because of the building layout, each time we needed staff we had to go downstairs and call out ourselves—disappointing. This should be a truly luxurious historic Hotel, but in terms of hospitality there is considerable inconsistency in service quality among staff.

    It became a wonderful memory!

Thank you for arranging dinner with my daughter and her husband. I was truly impressed by the restaurant’s setting—it looks wonderful in photos. I can’t thank you enough for taking commemorative pictures for us. If I have the chance, I would love to visit again.

We had a wonderful summer vacation.

This was my first visit. The Hotel appeared among the trees of Old Karuizawa, and it was a wonderful location for a summer getaway. The shade from the trees was pleasantly cool. This time, I stayed in the Atago Wing with a private Onsen. The Onsen uses a recirculating system, and you can hear the sound of running water. They told me, “If the water sound bothers you when you sleep, we can turn it off,” so if that concerns you, I recommend discussing your preferred hours with them. The Room had a modern Japanese style. I loved the choices for the faucets and bathroom tiles, the rosemary-scented hand soap provided, and how well-balanced the interior design felt. For dinner we had the 90th anniversary classical course, which was also very satisfying. I’d heard that my friend’s mother loves their beef stew and redcurrant jam, so I was happy to be able to buy both as souvenirs at the shop. I didn’t have time to use the café, but besides their famous apple pie, the blueberry tart in the display case also looked delicious. I’d love to come back again for a more relaxing stay.

    Refresh surrounded by greenery

After staying at Fujiya Hotel and Hotel New Grand, I thought Manpei Hotel should be next, so I came to visit. As it’s a summer resort, I was hoping for cooler weather, but Karuizawa during the day was surprisingly hot. After strolling around Tsutaya Books (T-SITE) and the outlet mall, we took the Shuttle Service bus to the Hotel (much appreciated). Surrounded by trees, the Hotel truly felt like a healing paradise… Many of the staff seemed young and still gaining experience, but there was always a seasoned staff member nearby, which made us feel at ease. It was heartwarming to see how earnestly they worked. The experienced staff were pleasant with just the right amount of conversation—exactly what you’d expect from true professionals. We went for breakfast a little after 7:00 and managed to get one of the last window seats. While I was taking photos of my mother, a staff member noticed and kindly offered to take a photo of both of us. This time I planned to buy one of the lily-of-the-valley FEILER items in the shop, but by our departure day the classic design had sold out, so I bought this year’s retro pattern instead. Another lovely memory… Next time, I’d like to stay in Atagokan with its Onsen.

    It felt luxurious.

We chose the Manpei Hotel, one of the classic Hotels we had long wanted to visit, to celebrate my companion’s birthday as well. It truly felt like a Hotel with a rich tradition. From check-in, the staff’s hospitality conveyed the refinement of a long-established luxury Hotel. A walk through the courtyard was very pleasant; although we didn’t get very close, we felt uplifted by the sacred tree (haha). The food was excellent as expected, and the portion balance felt perfect. The birthday cake we requested in advance also made my companion very happy. We would love to stay again if we have another opportunity. Thank you very much.

Satisfied with a long-established luxury Hotel in Karuizawa

I had a very satisfying one-night stay at The Hotel in Karuizawa. The milk tea, said to be based on John Lennon’s recipe, was delicious—I even bought the same tea leaves at the shop. Located away from the bustle of Karuizawa’s typical resort area, the atmosphere inside the Hotel was wonderful, and both dinner and breakfast were excellent. I would love to visit again when I have the chance.

    I was satisfied.

This was our second stay since the renovation. This time, I visited with my wife—who couldn’t join last time due to feeling unwell—and our daughter, the three of us. We first enjoyed apple pie and royal milk tea on the café terrace, and after check-in we were very satisfied with the Room with a private Onsen and were able to relax. We also had the 90th anniversary dinner course, which was more than satisfying—our whole family was delighted with the trip. If possible, having multiple bath towels or a place to hang bath towels would make it easier to enjoy the Onsen multiple times.

A luxurious post-retirement getaway for couples.

The meals and Facilities were flawless and wonderful. More than 20 years ago, I visited the café just once and strongly hoped that someday I would stay at this Hotel. After a quarter of a century, that wish finally came true with this stay. The staff were extremely courteous and attentive, and the young team worked hard with bright smiles. I couldn’t find a single fault, and it truly felt worthy of having hosted famous guests such as past prime ministers, leading figures, and John Lennon. Thank you very much.

We had a wonderful, high-quality stay.

As we were staying to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I had asked in advance whether it would be possible to prepare a message plate at dinner. From check-in and being escorted to our Room, to dinner service, many staff members offered warm congratulations. You kindly agreed to the message plate request as well, and your natural, polished hospitality truly made us happy. What I personally appreciated most was the turndown service. With many Hotels having discontinued it since the pandemic, it was wonderful to be able to request it again and spend time comfortably in our Room. We also received a celebratory message card and sweets—thank you very much. In addition, even though they must have been busy, the housekeeping team always stopped when passing us in the hallway and greeted us pleasantly; it left a great impression. Dinner was served in the main dining room. The beautiful space was breathtaking. Everyone spoke cheerfully, creating an approachable atmosphere that allowed us to relax and enjoy the delicious meal without feeling tense. The courses were served at a good pace, and while the staff moved efficiently with no wasted motion, there was never any sense of pressure. They also added enjoyable conversation when explaining each dish. The food was as delightful visually as it was delicious, with thoughtful touches that highlighted the quality of each ingredient—another point we truly appreciated. The cocktails we had at the bar were exactly to my taste—we even found ourselves saying we wanted one more to take back to our Room after finishing ours. The coffee-bean chocolates and jerky were also excellent with no compromises; even in how each item is selected for the menu, you can feel sincere and careful craftsmanship. Breakfast enjoyed while looking out over the beautiful garden filled with morning sunlight was colorful and made for a bright start to the day. Since we visited rather late around 9:00 a.m., I couldn’t mention that there wasn’t any dressing available; I’m curious about how it should taste, so I’d love to try again next time (laughs). The Onsen bath in our Room was wonderfully relaxing, and I loved the interior—so much so that we’re already talking about when our next stay will be. We also enjoyed using the café terrace and shop, making for a very pleasant time. The refined service, all of your staff members’ hospitality, and Rooms made comfortable through renovation despite being within such a historic setting—all of it contributed to an exceptionally fulfilling stay. We are truly glad we chose to spend our anniversary here. Thank you very much for all your thoughtful kindnesses throughout our visit.

    This is a wonderful Hotel.

This was our first stay, and the Hotel was truly wonderful, just as we had heard. Since we had a Room with a terrace, we were delighted to enjoy the greenery through windows on two sides. Breakfast, tea at the café, and the French dinner were all delicious—we were completely satisfied. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, with just the right sense of distance, and made a great impression. Thanks to them, we were able to relax completely. We definitely want to stay again and are already looking forward to our next visit.

    Highly recommended!

Although I had visited the café, I had long wanted to stay here but couldn’t find the right opportunity due to the renovation work. After the renewal, Rooms with an Onsen were added, so I decided to stay this time. It is not an open-air bath, but being able to enjoy an Onsen in a classic Hotel Room feels truly special, and the Onsen was excellent. The hospitality and service from all staff members, as well as dinner and breakfast, were all fully satisfying. While there are now many Hotels in Karuizawa and plenty of wonderful options, this one stands in a class of its own and is a Hotel I would encourage everyone to visit at least once. The lobby décor and the light through the stained glass create a calm classic atmosphere that is extremely comfortable, and there is also a space displaying the Hotel’s history, which I found fascinating. If I may mention just one point: during dinner, there was a staff member whose footsteps echoed noticeably on the floor—even from quite far away—so it was easy to tell when they were approaching. It is minor, but it stood out precisely because everything else was of such a high standard. Even simply taking a walk around the Hotel allows you to fully enjoy Karuizawa amid lush greenery. This is an Accommodation I would strongly recommend.

    We stayed as a famil...

We stayed as a family for a Multiple Night Stay. The balcony door from inside the Room did not fit well; it wouldn’t close properly without some force and made a loud clunking noise. For that reason, I rated the Room 3. As we only used the shower, the bathroom was neither good nor bad, so I rated it 3. I gave the meals a 4 because I think there is still room for improvement. Overall satisfaction: 4. Next time, I would like to stay in a Room with an Onsen.

    Disappointed

I felt this even when I visited only the cafe on a rainy day before, but the front desk service is poor. This time, the staff member who escorted us to our Room at check-in was very unique and gave clear guidance, which was great. The dining staff also had good timing when serving the food, and they kindly helped with taking photos, which left a good impression. The problem was at check-out. Because we needed to catch the Shinkansen, we settled our bill early and asked for a taxi at 10:50. However, when we returned the key to the front desk at 10:50, we found out they had mistakenly booked it for 11:50. On top of that, there was no apology—only “We’ll arrange a taxi now; it looks like one will come in about 10 minutes,” and then they just left us waiting. During that time several taxis arrived to pick up other Hotel guests, yet they made no attempt to negotiate with any of them and simply let them leave empty. Unable to tolerate it any longer, I asked a female staff member who was acting as a doorman; only then did an older staff member finally come out and handle it. By then we were simply furious. Thanks to the taxi driver asking about our Shinkansen departure time and taking back roads at speed, we made it in time—but if we had missed it, would this Hotel have apologized? When I watched the entrance while having tea at the cafe the day before, they bowed politely as guests left by taxi or private car—so what explains this difference? Are guests just ignored during busy hours? Even after boarding the Shinkansen my anger kept rising; instead it reminded me how excellent the service was at Imperial Hotel and Otani Sanso. I will never use this place again.

    Staying for a birthday trip

We stayed at the Alps Wing Classic Premier Room with dinner and breakfast, combining a classic hotel visit with a birthday celebration. It was such an outstanding experience that it made us feel not “If we go to Karuizawa, we want to stay at Manpei Hotel,” but “We want to go to Karuizawa in order to stay at Manpei Hotel.” After parking and walking outside with our suitcase, a staff member noticed me from afar right away, hurried over, and carried our luggage for us. A young female staff member escorted us to our Room. She had a wonderful smile, and even after we arrived she carefully explained the in-room facilities and amenities, which showed the high quality of the Hotel’s training. I also saw her serving during dinner—she moved briskly and efficiently. It has been about a year since the Hotel renovation, but the Room was kept beautifully clean. The Classic Premier is 48 m², so even with suitcases open around the bed area it didn’t feel cramped. Turndown service is available between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. After dinner starting at 5:30 pm we had drinks at the bar, and when we returned around 8:00 pm pajamas had been placed on the bed and chocolates were set on the cabinet in front of the TV. The trash bins had also been refreshed, used bath towels collected, and replaced with new ones. This kind of thoughtful attention to detail is exactly what makes Manpei Hotel special. For dinner, we asked in advance to switch to the Alps Wing 90th Anniversary Dinner. Everything was truly delicious—especially the steamed lobster (vapeur) and grilled Shinshu Wagyu beef; both were exceptional thanks to great ingredients paired with flavorful sauces. After dinner we also enjoyed drinks at the bar. A female bartender explained each menu item in detail, so we ordered “Karuizawa Light” and their 90th anniversary cocktail “Alps Lemonade.” Some hotel bars charge a cover fee or automatically serve nuts/snacks depending on where you go, but there was neither here—perfect for those who just want a casual drink. We used the café twice and ordered apple pie, scones, seasonal tartlets, their 90th anniversary parfait, royal milk tea (milk tea), and Japanese black tea with apple flavoring. We were also able to sit in John Lennon’s favorite seat. At breakfast there wasn’t one hand towel provided for one person and some of the service felt slightly awkward; however their sincerity came through clearly. For us it was minor compared with how satisfied we were overall. The souvenirs were beautifully designed as well—we ended up buying lots before heading home.
