    We stayed as a family, and among the many Onsen we have visited, the hospitality and cuisine here are top-class. This is a Hotel we would love to stay at again.

    A lovely accommodation in a small onsen town

    I stayed here while visiting the nearby Mugonkan Museum. I only learned about this Onsen while looking for a place to stay, but the atmosphere of the Onsen town spreading out in the small temple town by Kitamuki Kannon was just right. It’s not crowded and noisy like more famous Onsen resorts, so you can truly relax. I chose an Accommodation with a Room featuring an open-air bath and beds, and the Room had been fully renovated and was very comfortable. The water temperature was perfect for a leisurely soak, and it was especially nice to bathe while listening to the bell of Kitamuki Kannon right next door. The meals were all carefully prepared and delicious. The Shinshu salmon in particular was outstanding, and overall I was very satisfied with the dining. The Facility is clean throughout and equipped with modern features, yet the service is never pretentious—just pleasantly friendly in a way that feels right. From Tokyo it’s just over an hour by Shinkansen, then about 30 minutes on a local train to the final stop. There are many well-known Onsen destinations you can reach from Tokyo, but this one is easy to access too—and it feels like finding a hidden gem.

    This Ryokan comes highly recommended from the bottom of our hearts.

    Being welcomed outdoors really heightens the anticipation for your stay. While enjoying welcome matcha and sweets, the staff provided clear, sufficient information about the Accommodation and skillfully asked about our preferences. The Room did not have an open-air bath, but it was spacious enough for four people, very clean, with beautiful tatami mats—comfortable to spend time in. Because the number of guests is limited, we could relax in both the main building bath and the annex bath at our leisure, and the water temperature was well managed. It’s less than a minute from the Accommodation to Kitamuki Kannon Temple, making sightseeing easy. The meals were carefully prepared and of course delicious, and the dining Room was spacious with no sense of crowding at all.\n\nWe were very satisfied with our stay and would love to return. For the first time in a while, I’m giving a perfect score.

    Everything was wonderful.

    Three female relatives stayed here together. Our Room came with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and it was incredibly spacious—large enough to live in comfortably. The beds, mattresses, and futons were all fluffy and very comfortable. There were baths in both the main building and the annex, plus a free private bath. We also used the bath in our Room many times and truly enjoyed the Onsen from the bottom of our hearts. We went so often that we stopped counting partway through. The water was a gentle sulfur spring reminiscent of Kusatsu Onsen, and it even helped a lot with my rough hands. Even though there should have been other guests, most of the time it felt like it was just the three of us bathing—practically private—so we could relax and enjoy the Onsen at a leisurely pace. I’ve never had a trip where I didn’t go out to explore the hot spring town even once because I enjoyed the Ryokan itself so much. We also appreciated the services in the lounge where guests can relax freely. Meals were prepared as in-room dining on our dining table, and every dish was carefully made with heartfelt attention—we enjoyed them all very much. All of the staff were extremely courteous, making our stay wonderfully comfortable. It was an outstanding Onsen Ryokan. Even about a week after returning home, we still found ourselves talking again and again about what a great trip it was—it really was that wonderful! Thank you so much for such a lovely Onsen getaway. Next time, we’d love to visit again someday for a special occasion and take our time relaxing here.

    We would love to stay with you again.

    This was my first time in Bessho Onsen, and I’m truly glad I chose this Accommodation. It’s rare for a Ryokan to offer a 12:00 checkout, and I really appreciated that all meals were served in private dining rooms; everything was also very delicious. I felt it would be even more enjoyable if there were a few more egg dishes at breakfast. There is only one open-air bath, but the indoor bath was also clean and comfortable to use. With Kitamuki Kannon right next door, it was convenient for visiting the temple, and the location was excellent as well. I would love to stay here again.

    I was very satisfied.

    My wife and I stayed on a weekday on 2/9. The Room with an open-air bath was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. There were five Onsen baths in total, including the large public bath, and since it was a weekday we were able to enjoy them at our leisure as if they were private. The meals were satisfying in taste, portion size, and presentation. All of the staff provided attentive service. Kitamuki Kannon Temple is also truly close by—about a 1–2 minute walk away. It happened to be during the illumination period, and the contrast with the snow that had fallen the day before created a wonderful atmosphere. We recommend visiting in winter.

    The Best Ryokan in Bessho Onsen

    I have family in Ueda, and since childhood I have stayed at Bessho Onsen dozens of times. In the past, I used various Ryokan, but recently Kashiwaya Honten has been my only choice. With its location right next to the Kannon statue, meals featuring local ingredients, comfortable Onsen baths and bedrooms, and the relaxed pace of a 12:00 check-out, it truly offers the best of both a Hotel and a Ryokan, and I was able to unwind completely. One suggestion: since bath towels are provided in the large public bath, it would be great if face towels were also available there. I will definitely stay again.

    Exceptional hospitality and high-quality Onsen

    The reviews were excellent, so I made a reservation, and it was truly worth it. The hospitality and attentiveness of all the staff were outstanding. From the facility tour to the option to choose meals, shuttle service from a station 10 minutes away on foot, and even checking the operating hours of restaurants we wanted to visit—every detail showed their thoughtful care. On a snowy day, they even provided hand warmers as we left. The quality of the onsen was exceptional; within minutes I started sweating, and it was also drinkable. It was surprising not to encounter other guests outside of the onsen area during our stay. While there were signs of age in some facilities due to its history—such as cold spots and many steps—the renovations and measures against cold weather minimized any inconvenience. However, please note that stairs are unavoidable throughout the accommodation. It was slightly disappointing that the hairdryer in the changing room had weak airflow and there wasn’t a makeup mirror in our room. On a positive note, having access to massage chairs was delightful! The lounge always offered bottled water, coffee, tea, and snacks—a nice touch! Meals for both dinner and breakfast included options despite having only a few rooms available at this ryokan—it felt like they truly pursued top-notch service. Personally, I’m not fond of fatty beef often served as main dishes at many ryokans; being able to choose pork soy milk hot pot instead made me very happy! Since we booked an anniversary plan, complimentary drinks were provided with dinner. A 12:00 checkout time is rare but allowed us ample time to enjoy the onsen until departure. Rather than being defined by one standout feature or attraction alone, this accommodation excels through its meticulous services throughout your stay—a place where you’d want to bring someone special or return again multiple times for relaxation!

    I felt completely rejuvenated, both body and mind!

    It was truly the right choice to stay at Kashiwaya Honten for our first visit to Bessho Onsen! Everything was filled with warm hospitality. The accommodation's atmosphere, the welcoming smiles, the flowers and lights displayed everywhere, the clean room and bedding, and the relaxing onsen—all were wonderful, allowing us to unwind completely. There were a few stairs leading to the dining room, which concerned me as my mother has slight knee pain. However, the staff kindly assisted us with great care. The meals were also exceptional in both taste and presentation—truly impressive! Above all, every staff member was genuinely kind and conveyed their desire for guests to relax and enjoy their time at this accommodation. I have decided that whenever I visit Bessho Onsen again, I will definitely stay at Kashiwaya Honten. Thank you so much for your outstanding hospitality!

    A wonderful Onsen destination

    Arrived early at 2 PM, and a young staff member kindly assisted us, making the wait until check-in very pleasant. Upon entering the room, the scent of tatami was refreshing and uplifting. The room was a beautiful Japanese-style room with excellent heating, ensuring comfort both inside the room and in the hallways. Additionally, there was an open-air bath attached to the room with wonderful natural hot spring water that we enjoyed multiple times. Although we only used the private open-air bath this time, we plan to try the public bath on our next visit. The dinner provided featured elaborate dishes that were highly satisfying. We hope to revisit within this year; however, as reservations seem quite full, we will aim for availability next year instead. Thank you very much!

    Visited in mid-December. A calm and relaxing accommodation with bright and pleasant staff made for a comfortable stay. The room was clean, spacious, and included an additional space. The bath was excellent as well. The meals were carefully prepared and delicious. Being able to enjoy them in a private room allowed for a leisurely dining experience. I would love to visit again!

    The accommodation offered a memorable experience with its natural flowing onsen, delicious cuisine, and exceptional staff service. In addition to the large baths in both the main and new buildings, we enjoyed the private open-air bath in our room multiple times, truly indulging in an onsen-filled stay. The 12:00 checkout allowed us to relax and enjoy the onsen until departure, which was a delightful touch. Thanks to this wonderful experience, we were able to escape daily life and spend luxurious moments. We would love to visit this accommodation again!

    Highly Satisfied

    We stayed here for a family trip. I visited with my parents, who are over 80 years old, and the staff's polite service was truly excellent. The meals and the onsen were absolutely wonderful! The portions were generous, so we couldn't finish everything, but each dish was carefully prepared. However, what stood out the most was the exceptional hospitality of the staff! Our stay was incredibly relaxing. When we mentioned wanting to purchase some rare vegetables served during our meal, the chef kindly informed us about a store where we could buy them after checking for us personally. Additionally, when we lost our room key and informed them that it couldn't be found despite searching thoroughly in our room, they showed great concern for us instead of blaming us. On our way home, they even contacted us to let us know that they had found the key in our room—this left a lasting impression on us. This accommodation is perfect for trips with seniors—you can't go wrong here! The language used by all staff members is very polite, and even younger staff provide outstanding service. We will visit again next year! My parents were also extremely satisfied with this trip. A heartfelt thank you to this wonderful accommodation!

    It was so relaxing!

    This is my second stay following early summer last year. Last year, I was moved by the sound of the bell from Kitamuki Kannon while staying in the room, and decided to visit again in a different season. Once again, I was deeply relaxed by the delicious meals and the slightly hot onsen. One small concern was the wood decay in the washing area of the room bath, but this is an accommodation that makes me want to visit repeatedly.

    Matsutake Mushroom Cuisine

    It was unfortunate that we couldn't enjoy the special dish with matsutake mushrooms, but we understand it's due to nature. The facility has steps in various places, which can be quite challenging for the elderly. However, all the staff were very kind, and we would love to visit this accommodation again to enjoy matsutake mushrooms.

Facility: There are drinks and light snacks available, and you can relax in the lounge near the lobby. Bath: The bath temperature is comfortable, and it is clean and pleasant. However, there is only one open-air bath. Meals: The seasoning is not too strong, which is good. However, the quality and portion of meat dishes might be slightly lacking. Service: All staff members are friendly, approachable, and greet guests properly. Special thanks to the male sales representative for his assistance! Thank you very much! Additional Services: I noticed light car washing being done—impressive! Valet parking service available as well. Hospitality within the accommodation matches that of a first-class hotel. Satisfaction Level: We are satisfied with our stay; rooms with open-air baths make this Ryokan highly popular, so reservations fill up quickly. Early reservation is essential for this Ryokan!

    The best Hotel I have ever stayed at!

    Thank you for providing such a wonderful experience. The spacious room with a garden, the private Onsen we could enjoy for free, the warm hospitality, the abundant amenities, and the atmosphere of the Onsen town with its temple were all impressive. However, what surprised us most was how incredibly delicious both dinner and breakfast were!! We also loved having our meals in a private dining room where we could enjoy beautiful outdoor views. The staff member who attended to us explained each dish in detail, making the experience even more special. The river fish sashimi and grilled fish were particularly delightful, with sauces that showed great attention to detail. From the moment we arrived at your Ryokan, your courteous service set it apart from others we've visited. You kindly accommodated changes to ingredients we couldn't eat and even sent back forgotten items at no extra cost—your hospitality exceeded all expectations. Having traveled extensively both domestically and internationally, this was by far the most exceptional experience we've ever had—it’s unforgettable.     Had a relaxing stay.

    At the end of August, we visited Zenkoji Temple before checking into the accommodation. Upon arriving by car, we were guided between the main building and the annex, and the ryokan staff handled valet parking for us. As we usually have a lot of luggage and hadn't organized it in advance, it took us a bit of time to sort things out. Although it's an old ryokan, it was very clean, and the service was impeccable. Check-out was available until 12:00 PM, allowing us to relax even after breakfast.

    A very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere allowed us to fully enjoy the Onsen. The Room, the facility, and the large public bath were all clean, with towels and yukata well-prepared. The Japanese-style lobby offered light snacks and drinks, showing thoughtful hospitality. It was also a pleasant surprise to have a newspaper delivered to our Room in the morning. The meals had a slight focus on dishes that pair well with alcohol, but every dish featured local ingredients, reflecting love for the region. We had Western-style breakfast, which was very satisfying and highly recommended.

    We stayed as a family of three, including my son and wife, and found the hospitality, meals, facility, bath, and amenities to be the best among all the ryokans we have ever stayed at. We would definitely like to stay here again when visiting Nagano. Highly recommended!

    A quiet and peaceful accommodation

    I have visited Bessho Onsen many times, and I love this onsen area for its excellent hot springs. This was my second stay at Kashiwaya following last year. Once again, I was able to relax and unwind during my stay. With only 12 rooms, I hardly encountered other guests and could fully enjoy the onsen. The hospitality had a perfect sense of balance, with thoughtful care that made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. The meals were also incredibly delicious. Thank you for your hospitality. I will visit again!

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother's 94th birthday. The staff were very warm, and we had a wonderful time together with my mother. The birthday cake was delicious, and we finished it completely—thank you also for the photos. The meals were excellent, especially paired with the drinks. Our Room had a shower booth but was more spacious than expected, allowing three of us to stay comfortably. The public bath was also very relaxing. Next time, I would love to stay in a Room with a private bath.

    Onsen Trip

    This year's Obon holiday became a memorable experience. The location was calm and peaceful, without the hustle and bustle of shopping streets, allowing us to relax fully. We were especially satisfied with the Onsen and meals. The Room had a slight scent typical of older buildings, and there were many spider webs in the private open-air bath (which gave a very natural feel). Additionally, it was a bit disappointing that the rice served during meals was cold. However, everything else made for a very comfortable stay. My partner also mentioned wanting to visit again, and I personally would love to return if given another opportunity.
