A lush, carpet-like green view from the window.

In stark contrast to the severe winter last time, this visit welcomed us with dazzling greenery. I was first amazed by how different the same place can look from season to season. Standing by the window of our room, what spread out below was a carpet of green as far as the eye could see. From the lush trees, you can feel the mountain’s powerful breath, and I truly sensed I was right in the midst of nature filling itself with life. During the day it was warm enough to work up a sweat, yet mornings and evenings were pleasantly cool with crisp air—almost as if we could experience multiple shifts of season within a single day. For dinner we chose Japanese cuisine. This time we were able to enjoy wild boar and venison. There was none of the gaminess often associated with wild meat, and I was impressed by how carefully each dish was prepared. I happened to feel that the dashi tasted different from last time, so I asked—and learned it was made with pike conger (hamo). That explained it: a wonderfully gentle flavor that slowly spread across the palate with every bite. For breakfast we chose Western-style dishes. The theme was “green,” and it was a meat-free menu—but above all, the bagna càuda sauce served with the salad was outstanding; I couldn’t resist dipping my bread into it and finishing every last bit. At last, the much-loved green season has begun—comfortable, peaceful time flows by at an unhurried pace. From the head chef to all of your staff, everyone always treats us so warmly that words cannot express our gratitude. Thanks to you, I felt truly refreshed and returned home with renewed energy for everyday life. I’m already eager to plan my next visit whenever I can find time between work commitments. A place that makes you want to come back each time the seasons change—thank you again for another unforgettable stay.

I was able to stay at another Accommodation I had always dreamed of.

This was one of the Ryokan I had long wanted to stay at, and I finally had the chance. It’s not an inexpensive Ryokan for us, and it’s a place we hoped to visit for a special occasion or milestone. This time, after retiring from my long-time job, my wife made the Reservation so we could come here simply to enjoy the stay—no sightseeing. We arrived a little early, and two male staff members were waiting at the entrance. One checked our Reservation, took our luggage, and guided us to the lounge; the other valet-parked our car. Everything was extremely smooth. Check-in was completed in the lounge while we enjoyed complimentary tea and sweets—impeccably efficient service with no wasted steps. We were impressed from the moment we arrived. There are three bathing areas: a large public bath, a standing bath, and a reclining bath (we didn’t use the reclining bath), but each Onsen was excellent. The standing bath is especially famous and has been featured many times in travel magazines—I used it three times myself. There is also drink service; in particular, the large public bath offered Pocari Sweat, health drinks, Enmei-cha herbal tea, ice popsicles—an outstanding selection. What surprised me most was that during our stay I used both the large public bath and the standing bath three times each—and never once shared them with anyone else. It was a weekday in June so it wasn’t fully booked, but there were still around 10–15 parties staying. For meals we chose Japanese cuisine for both dinner and breakfast. Everything was flawless: dishes based on local production for local consumption that showcased not only great flavor but also presentation that delighted all five senses. Every staff member interacted with us at just the right distance; their hospitality deserves full marks by any standard of Accommodation service. The price is certainly not cheap—but it’s exactly the kind of Ryokan that makes you want to work hard, save up, and come back again. My wife even says that among all Ryokan and Hotel stays she has experienced so far—considering value for money as well—this is number one. About 15 years ago at a Hokuriku Ryokan I ended up talking about Onsen with a calm elderly gentleman I met in a large public bath. When I asked where he recommended most out of everywhere he had stayed, he said Tobira Onsen Myojinkan was his best ever—and since then it has been my goal to stay here too. I’ll keep working hard so we can return again (laugh). One note (not any fault of this Ryokan): from about 7 km out there are sections where the road becomes narrow enough that cars cannot pass each other easily; luxury cars or large vehicles may not be ideal. One request: leaves or insects sometimes drift into the open-air bath area of the large public bath—so it would be helpful if a small net could be placed nearby for guests to use.

    The hospitality is excellent.

We stayed in a suite, and the service was excellent. From arrival to departure, we were able to spend our time comfortably. As for the Room, there were a few points that concerned us. Since you have a projector, I think it would be better if the wall used for projection were smooth. The bathroom is very spacious, but the bathtub feels small considering the size of the space. Given that this is a fairly expensive Room, if these points could be improved, it would feel even more luxurious.

The soothing sound of a babbling stream and birdsong as you soak in the standing bath.

In the season of lush fresh greenery, I was able to Clear both body and mind. The standing bath featured in the images of this Accommodation was truly surrounded by silence, the sound of the river flowing, and birdsong—time for me to open up and feel free. Needless to say, the food was delicious. There was also a relaxed space where I could take my time, which supported a luxurious moment of being alone for a while away from my hectic everyday life. The staff (especially the women, haha) were wonderful conversationalists; beyond simply serving the dishes, they listened to me as well, and I ended up talking too much out of happiness—I may have gotten in the way of their work. Also, Treatment Room Natsura was excellent (though I fell asleep snoring). It was a great trip. Thank you very much.

A mystical Myojinkan surrounded by gods and forest

After driving through an extremely narrow mountain road, you arrive at the radiant Myojinkan Ryokan. I made a Reservation well in advance because I wanted a therapeutic Room. The view from both the window and the in-room bath felt like being deep in the forest. It was a spacious Room where I could truly relax. The Onsen I had been looking forward to (the standing bath) was wonderful, with an open-air feeling surrounded by trees. With views of the forest and stream, I soaked slowly and peacefully. Among all the Onsen Ryokan I have stayed at, this is my number one. One request: the slippers inside the building are hard to walk in, so I hope they can be improved. I will visit again. Thank you for your hospitality.

Surrounded by the fresh greenery of spring and the gentle murmur of the river.

A long-awaited stay to savor French cuisine. In the refreshing early-summer season, I was able to visit Myojinkan again. The moment I stepped into the Accommodation, brilliant fresh greenery filled my view. The entire forest felt overflowing with energy, and I enjoyed a luxurious time bathing in a “green shower,” as if sensing nature’s vitality up close. What makes this time of year especially appealing is the pleasant chill in the mornings and evenings. After the lively presence of green during the day, a crisp stillness settles in at night. Soaking in the standing bath, gazing up at fresh greenery that fills my field of view, and listening closely to the gentle sound of the river flowing… it was all breathtaking, and I could feel both body and mind gradually unwind. It was a special moment that sharpened all five senses—something you can experience only here. This time, I chose French for both dinner and breakfast, something I had been hoping to do for quite some time. Enjoying a Western course meal at Myojinkan—with its deep Japanese ambiance—made me excited to see how the blessings of this land would be expressed on each plate, and it exceeded my expectations. Each refined dish reflected the freshness of this season’s greenery, and I savored everything at an unhurried pace. With every turn of the seasons, this forest reveals a different face—and each stay draws me in even more deeply. Thank you once again for your consistently warm hospitality and for such healing time that can only be found here. I would love to return again to experience autumn’s quiet calm and winter’s crisp air.

    This is my third stay.

This was my third stay, my first in two years. Each time, I’ve been able to spend a comfortable and peaceful time here. The staff’s hospitality and the delicious meals—everything is outstanding, and you can truly feel the care put into every detail by everyone. Both the Japanese and French cuisine place great importance on seasonal flavors. With plenty of vegetables, both were absolutely delicious, but I was especially moved by each delicate dashi in the Japanese dishes! On my previous summer stays, I always looked forward to taking home pickled white gourd, but this time it was a bit early in the season, so unfortunately it wasn’t available. Instead, I was able to take home some wonderful asparagus! It’s an Accommodation that makes me want to come back right away. I’m already looking forward to deciding when to visit next.

The meals are so-so, but the Onsen is wonderful.

It feels like a standalone house tucked away in the mountains. It’s so soothing it almost feels like a sacred sanctuary. The meals were terrible. The most memorable thing was bear broth. Game meat is an acquired taste to begin with—and bear, on top of that.

A Cozy, Relaxing Accommodation with Warm Hospitality

We stayed here for the first time to celebrate my husband’s birthday. When I mentioned it at check-in, the staff provided a complimentary champagne service and a birthday cake plate at dinner, giving us truly heartwarming hospitality. Everyone, from the front desk to the Room attendants, was very polite, and we were impressed by how well-stocked everything was—towels and drinks in the bath area were always replenished and ready to use at any time.

    An Accommodation that Exceeded Expectations

I had a very pleasant one-night stay. I wasn’t feeling well and ended up causing the staff some concern, and I regret that I couldn’t finish my dinner. The view from the Room and the Onsen were both excellent.

Celebrate our 31st anniversary. Enjoy a refreshing escape in a world apart.

To celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary, we stayed at Myojinkan, a place my wife had long dreamed of visiting. On the way to Tobira Onsen, the sensation of being enveloped by deep forest and a valley felt truly special—like stepping away from everyday life into another world. True to its name, it was a wonderful setting filled with a mysterious, serene atmosphere. We enjoyed the French cuisine, and every dish was carefully prepared and beautifully presented—so delicious it exceeded our expectations and moved us as a couple. The Onsen was also outstanding, allowing us to relax both body and mind and forget the bustle of daily life. Most memorable of all was the warm, attentive hospitality from the staff. Everyone was genuinely pleasant, and their perfectly balanced approach made our anniversary even more meaningful. We were also deeply impressed by the Tobira Group owner’s philosophy of profound respect for the local community. The commitment to protecting and honoring this area’s nature and culture clearly contributes to the refined character of the Accommodation as a whole. We were completely captivated, and we are already planning to return for a Multiple Night Stay in July for my wife’s birthday. We have found an exceptional Accommodation we will want to come back to again and again. Thank you very much.

    It wasn’t very good.

Because this was a stay during Golden Week 2026 and the Accommodation was nearly fully booked, my experience fell short of expectations and left me dissatisfied. We paid over JPY 260,000 for a dinner-and-breakfast Plan for three people, but the Room, the dinner venue, and the large public bath were all completely not worth the price. My whole family checked out disappointed. By chance I overheard a conversation between another guest and staff: it seems that guests who have made Reservations directly through the Accommodation’s website three or more times receive perks related to Facility access, and first-time guests are treated unfavorably when Rooms and dining seats are assigned. In fact, our second-floor Room (Aoi) faced a back entrance used by employees to enter the building. Rather than enjoying any view from the window, we had to keep both the window and curtains closed all day to block staff staring in as well as loud voices. In addition, every time an emergency exit door used by housekeeping staff opened or closed, strong vibrations came into our Room, making it impossible to sleep until late at night. I repeatedly raised these issues with staff in charge of complaints but received no satisfactory response—the level of service was comparable to a Business Hotel. As for the Onsen—even allowing for how wonderful Shibu Onsen had felt when we stayed there the previous day—the water was lukewarm, and I was fed up with children swimming in one of the larger baths. The standing bath and reclining bath were often monopolized for long periods by certain guests, leaving us no choice but to give up using them. We often visit small Onsen Ryokan on the Izu Peninsula; at similar prices there are many Accommodations that deliver far greater satisfaction, which made Myojinkan feel notably inferior.

I stayed here many years ago (before the renovation) and had a wonderful impression, but this time exceeded it—everything was comfortable from start to finish. The Onsen, the cuisine, and the Room were all outstanding, and I only wished we had come sooner. The staff’s hospitality was also truly pleasant. A similarly rated Onsen Ryokan we stayed at three months ago had about the same IKYU score, but it felt impersonal—well-equipped, yet purely functional—whereas here we received warm, heartfelt service. In particular, Mr./Ms. ○moto who assisted us at dinner: we apologize for any inconvenience with our small child, and thank you for your thoughtful care even regarding our child’s meal and yukata. We are also grateful for celebrating our wedding anniversary with us. After returning home, while enjoying the Myojinkan-exclusive sake from your relatives’ brewery, our family has been saying, “We want to stay again.”

We arrived a little early, but from check-in onward we received truly heartfelt hospitality. When I mentioned it was my birthday, they celebrated with champagne, which was very touching. I have visited many places through IKYU, and the Diamond Member benefits here were exceptional—I felt grateful to IKYU for the first time. For dinner we chose French cuisine; the sommelier’s explanations were very clear and knowledgeable, and my wine-loving husband was delighted as well. We had a wonderful time. We will definitely return to relax again next time.

    A charming, traditional Accommodation

I found and booked this Accommodation on IKYU, and stayed here. The access road is rough, but you can forget the hustle and bustle of the city and relax at a leisurely pace. Above all, the food is delicious. No matter what I tried, I could tell the ingredients were excellent. Of course, you can also feel the chef’s dedication in bringing out the best in them. Even at breakfast, staples of Japanese cuisine like natto and nori were outstanding—truly impressive. I’m convinced they are carefully selected by someone who knows what real quality is. The Onsen was also flawless—an incredibly relaxing space. Just one thing: there isn’t parking nearby, so you leave your key with them. The next morning when they brought my car back, it was very dirty with lots of fallen leaves and nuts on it.

    A Hidden Paradise

After about a two-hour drive along steep, narrow mountain roads, we arrived at a place worthy of being called paradise. The standing hot spring bath offered a true sense of oneness with nature, and the open-air bath in the Room was also spacious and relaxing. We chose Japanese cuisine, and the set of five types of sake selected to pair with the dishes is highly recommended for sake lovers. In particular, our conversation with a female staff member who was very knowledgeable about sake made the meal even more enjoyable and enhanced the flavors of each dish. The staff’s hospitality was consistently warm and friendly, which left a great impression.

A wonderful Accommodation with a sense of history. We were able to relax and enjoy our time as a couple.

My spouse and I stayed here again for the first time in two years. As it was originally a therapeutic hot-spring retreat, it’s not a brand-new, sparkling Facility, but everything is kept very clean, making this a wonderful Accommodation where you can truly relax. This time we stayed in a Room with separate living and sleeping areas. The TV was a bit hard to see from the living room due to its placement, but that actually made it perfect for reading the books we brought and spending quiet, unhurried time. The Onsen is excellent, with four types—indoor bath, open-air bath, standing bath, and lying-down bath—so simply enjoying the baths within the Accommodation is plenty of fun. The standing bath in particular is unforgettable; every time I visit I feel like I’d love to try it in another season as well. Personally, soaking for as long as I liked in the slightly lukewarm indoor bath without watching the clock felt wonderfully luxurious. We chose French cuisine for both dinner and breakfast. Dinner featured plenty of local Nagano ingredients and was flavorful without being heavy or greasy—delicious all the way through. The fruit bowl at breakfast was piled high with fruit and made us feel indulgent from the start of the day. Newer, more convenient Hotels are great too, but this stay reminded me how special it is to spend time at an Accommodation with a sense of history. Next time we plan to stay two nights so we can enjoy both French cuisine and Japanese cuisine.

    Perfect for group stays.

Although it may look hard to reach, you can take a dedicated bus from Matsumoto directly to this secluded hot spring, so access is actually quite easy. The service is almost on par with an international Hotel, so guests from overseas should be satisfied. Dinner and breakfast in the spacious open dining area will also make conversation lively. The dated feel indoors and outdoors (with some imbalance) and the limited amenities should be taken as part of its history, wabi-sabi atmosphere, and SDGs mindset—so please don’t worry about them. Not recommended for solo travelers.

We were able to relax and unwind at our own pace.

This time, I booked a Room with a private bath and visited with my wife. The open-air bath is great, but we fully enjoyed the in-room bath as well. Since our goal was simply to relax, we checked in early and were able to unwind in the Room at our own pace. The late-night rice balls were delicious. We chose the French course for dinner, and it was outstanding too. I don’t usually eat much fruit, but the fruit at breakfast was incredibly good—and there was plenty (120%), so I finished it all. As always, the staff’s thoughtfulness and hospitality are truly top-class. We’ll be back again with our family.

    Multiple Night Stay Additional Stay

Because my overseas trip via Dubai was canceled, I came here at short notice and extended my stay. Overall, I recommend the French dining. For Japanese cuisine (both dinner and breakfast), the staff were non-Japanese, and to be honest I couldn’t understand the dish explanations. That may be fine for international guests, but for Japanese guests it is much better to be assisted by Japanese staff. The spirit of hospitality is difficult to convey in proper Japanese manners. This is something I feel at many Accommodations: they simply recite memorized explanations, and when the explanation isn’t clear, it diminishes not only the food but also the entire atmosphere. It was disappointing. The food itself was delicious, but that is why—despite a Multiple Night Stay—I only chose Japanese cuisine once for dinner and breakfast. Among non-Japanese staff providing kaiseki-style hospitality, the only place that has been truly good so far is Fufu Nara; even within the Fufu group, others have not met that standard—only Nara. In my opinion, this is an important point for Japanese guests to be aware of. This was the single most disappointing aspect of my stay. On the other hand, many of the French dining staff were pleasant and attentive. Room delivery was also available; the soba was delicious. Since I could no longer go to Paris, on my last day the chef made me a galette—it was truly wonderful. Thank you very much for your heartfelt hospitality and kindness. I will visit again.

    Second Stay

I stayed here once about two years ago, and this time—after my overseas plans fell through due to the Dubai route being unavailable amid the Iran–Israel war—I decided at short notice to stay for a few days to enjoy the Onsen and relax. I’m truly grateful to all the staff for their kindness and excellent service. I was completely satisfied with the Onsen, the meals, and my Room. I personally recommend the French option—the atmosphere and cuisine are both wonderful. I’ll be back again.

We stayed here to celebrate a birthday. The staff’s warm and thoughtful attention made us feel truly comfortable. This was our second stay, and we were able to spend another wonderful time just like last time. It started with a welcome of delicious sparkling wine, and the desserts—especially the orange peel chocolate—were excellent. In the Room, we relaxed without turning on the TV, listening to music on the in-room speaker system. The Onsen was also great, especially the standing bath. For dinner, it was my first time trying bear meat; I was nervous after looking at the menu and wondering what it would be like, but I really enjoyed it. There’s too much to write about, but breakfast, dinner, and desserts were all outstanding. Thank you as well to all of the staff for their truly polite and kind service.

    Exceptional hospitality

We stayed here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Since it was our last trip together before the baby arrives, we treated ourselves to Myojinkan. From the warm welcome to check-in, we were even upgraded to a higher-grade room. The service, cuisine, and Onsen were all outstanding—by far the best Ryokan we have ever stayed at. Every staff member’s hospitality was wonderful, and we would love to return for another special occasion next time as a family of three. Thank you very much. And thank you as well for the safe-delivery charm at the end—it was a lovely surprise and made us so happy.

    Beyond expectations—almost perfect.

We stayed the night before my birthday. I first learned about this Ryokan through Relais & Châteaux 18 years ago, and it’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit. At last, I had the chance to stay here. Ideally, I would have come during the fresh green season, but this was a last-minute trip and I was worried about snow—however, the roads were fine both coming and going, and we were able to enjoy an open-air bath surrounded by snowy scenery. I felt warmth from every staff member, and each of the three baths had its own unique character—I ended up soaking seven times. Dinner and breakfast were also excellent; we were satisfied with almost everything. It’s hard to give a clear answer to “What exactly is so great about it?”, but it truly felt like an Accommodation that suits me perfectly. I’d love to return—either in the fresh green season or during autumn foliage.

Even the rain made for a charming stay. A seasonal transition woven by nature.

In stark contrast to the previous midwinter scenery, our stay this time—unusually for such a deep mountain setting—was accompanied by a gentle, steady rain. From snow to rain. Just that change in what falls from the sky made the landscape look completely different, and it surprised me. The sound of rain seemed to slowly melt the hard snow and ice, and in the stillness I could almost hear the unmistakable “footsteps of spring.” It was time spent truly feeling the shift of seasons. Because of the rain, we couldn’t take our usual walk, but instead, time in the Room became a luxury in itself. A large window turned into a picture frame as we gazed at trees darkened by rain and mountain slopes veiled in mist. Simply sitting and soaking in the view outside—doing nothing at all—helped me forget everyday busyness. We enjoyed Japanese cuisine for dinner, and even there we could sense spring’s arrival. Most memorable was an appetizer: a shinjo with udo (Japanese spikenard) and bamboo shoots. The softly fragrant udo and earthy bamboo shoots were wrapped in the gentle flavor of fluffy shinjo; with each bite it felt as if my body relaxed from within. A blissful moment savoring the joy of winter easing and new buds beginning to emerge, together with warm dashi. This time, we also had unhurried conversations with the service staff. The comfortable distance that suits this Accommodation—not too close, not too far. As casual chat flowed naturally, my shoulders loosened on their own and I felt my mind unwind into a calm ease. A stay wrapped in quietness, fine food, and human warmth—with rainfall as background music. It reminded me that this Accommodation’s depth also lies in its moist, tranquil atmosphere on rainy days—so different from sunny ones. A place you want to return to whenever the seasons change. Thank you again for another wonderful time.
