A place that leaves you wanting to return every time you visit.

My spouse and I have a favorite Room, so we time our Reservation for days when it’s available. We come back again and again with a simple purpose: to relax in the bright, open space—reading while listening to music, or just gazing at the green leaves swaying in the breeze without thinking about anything. The semi-open-air bath in the Room that lets the wind pass through is wonderful as always, as are the standing open-air bath where you can listen to the stream and the large public bath with its chic atmosphere—everything leaves us completely satisfied. Even as adults, we still find ourselves reaching for the complimentary ice pops after a soak. Since this Accommodation has long been known for its French cuisine, we request Western-style meals whenever possible. This dinner was excellent once again. We noticed a non-alcohol pairing set served with each course, so as someone who doesn’t drink I chose it without hesitation, while my wife ordered the wine pairing set. We were also moved by the beautiful watercolor illustrations accompanying each menu—exactly my favorite style. On the other hand, breakfast felt like a pre-set vegetarian-style tray: no choice of juices, no milk (which I love), no bacon or ham, and only scrambled eggs—which aren’t my preference. That was a bit disappointing and not what we expected; we were both hoping for Eggs Benedict…. So unfortunately, I had to deduct one star. Wrapped in this warm and gentle atmosphere, we’re already looking forward to our next stay.

I got a glimpse of why it’s so popular.

I was finally able to stay at Myojinkan, which I had long hoped to visit. The staff were always smiling and responded courteously. Because this is a high-level Accommodation, I hope you will aim even higher. Below are some detailed personal observations; I would be happy if they are of any help. 1) The road is narrow, so I would like the passing-bay signs to be easier to understand. 2) In summer, it might be nice if one bath had a lower-temperature Onsen—perhaps a lying-down bath. 3) A lot of dust had accumulated on the fan. Maintenance might be easier with a cover or similar measures. 4) I would appreciate slightly clearer guidance for the Room locations. 5) There were places in the changing area without a clock. I’d like one posted discreetly. Cotton swabs would also be helpful. 6) Regarding meals: for both the Japanese-style dinner and Western-style breakfast, how about reducing the number of dishes and instead highlighting one standout main item? Sashimi or fried dishes using large char Western-style dishes Hot pot or soup using mushrooms and wild boar Corn takikomi rice Meat dishes made generously with wine Seafood from Niigata Dishes that prominently feature local miso

It was a wonderful accommodation surrounded by greenery.

The Onsen—especially the view from the standing bath—was wonderful. The champagne in the lounge was also very delicious. As an Accommodation in the forest, you can enjoy greenery from anywhere—the Onsen, Room, lounge, or restaurant. It must be truly spectacular during the autumn foliage season; I’d like to visit at that time next time. I was a bit disappointed that there were many soups at dinner and I felt full before the main course was served. After breakfast, coffee time on the lush green terrace was pure bliss.

    Rest and Recharge

I stayed here during my summer vacation. The moment I entered the Room, I was captivated by the warm, wood-filled space. The view of lush green trees through the wooden-framed windows helped me forget the busyness of everyday life, and I was able to relax in quiet comfort while lying on the cushioned sofa by the window. The view from the semi-open-air bath was also beautiful and incredibly relaxing. It truly was a Room with an outstanding view. I enjoyed both Japanese and French cuisine, and both were delicious with gentle, wholesome flavors. The rice balls prepared as a late-night snack were also excellent. All of the staff were kind and attentive, and I truly appreciated that they even delivered an item I forgot after checkout to my home. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again!

    Dream Accommodation: Tobira Onsen Myojinkan

Tobira Onsen Myojinkan is always featured in travel magazines—an Accommodation I had long dreamed of staying at. First, the Onsen. The standing bath is open all day, which I truly appreciated. The gentle water is wonderfully relaxing. Next, the meals. My wife is very particular about food, so this Accommodation was a perfect fit. They have their own farm and grow homemade pesticide-free vegetables and more. It is a member of Relais & Châteaux. “Contributing to the world through cuisine and hospitality!”—what a wonderful philosophy. And the service. The woman who served us at the restaurant explained each dish with confidence, and we strongly felt her hospitality. Finally, the Facility. This Ryokan uses plenty of wood throughout, and you can really feel its warmth. It is such a lovely Ryokan that I hope it will continue to lead Japan’s Accommodations for many years to come. Thank you very much.

    Thank you as always!

As always, the Onsen and guest room were clean, luxurious, and comfortable. Thanks to the delicious meals made with plenty of local ingredients and the friendly yet attentive staff, we were able to relax and enjoy a truly fulfilling stay. Thank you very much!

    The Onsen is excellent.

While an Onsen can sometimes feel a bit too hot, the Onsen here is set slightly cooler, so you can enjoy it for a long time even in summer. The open-air bath was especially comfortable. Inside the Accommodation, there are relaxing spaces such as the lounge, and I felt it would be best to stay at least two nights. A small disappointment was that there was no dry sauna. I’d also be happier if the bathroom fixtures in the room were a bit newer. However, having a small sink next to the refrigerator and coffee maker was convenient and appreciated, since I don’t like leaving unfinished drinks sitting around. The meals focused on locally sourced ingredients, and I heard that the illustrations on the menu were drawn by a staff member’s child—very well done and heartwarming. The sommelier also recommended Shinshu wines, which were excellent. It was a wonderful Accommodation worthy of the Relais & Châteaux name.

Thank you for the Diamond Member benefits.

The Diamond Member benefit soup during the meal was very delicious. Also, there were complimentary sweets and fruit in the Room, and I am grateful for these in addition to the Diamond Member benefits.

    As expected of Myojinkan

It was my first visit in a long time since staying here for several consecutive nights, and it exceeded my previous experience—truly worthy of Myojinkan. I do have one complaint: a man entered the women’s changing room at the public bath and immediately left saying, “Oh, wrong one,” but I think the entrance noren should be made easier to distinguish (for example, by changing the base color). Since there are no staff present at the large public bath, I hope this will be addressed going forward.

    A relaxing Accommodation for adults

From guiding our car on arrival to check-in, the service was smooth and efficient. The property was impeccably clean, and we were able to relax in the Room thanks to its interior design and high-quality furnishings.

    Exceptional Hospitality

Staying at the historic and traditional Myojinkan was truly healing for both body and mind. There were none of the directive signs often seen in bathrooms, and thoughtful attention was evident in every corner of the Facility. Bathing beneath the dappled sunlight was an incomparable moment of bliss. The staff’s service and explanations at the restaurant made the cuisine feel even more exceptional. Of course, every dish—from the ingredients to the cooking methods—felt as though it gently permeated my whole body. I was also surprised to be served warm water before breakfast. At departure, they not only gave me a pack of cold barley tea to take with me, but when I returned after forgetting something, they even sent me off with iced coffee—I had no words. It truly felt like the very best hospitality.

    Thank you for taking...

Thank you for taking care of us after our hike in Kurumayama. This was our second stay, and we had the same Room as last time. The bed sits prominently in the center, and for someone like me who likes to relax without doing much, it’s a very comfortable layout—whether lying on the bed or leaning back against the cushions. The bath water is a little on the lukewarm side. The in-room bath and the outdoor bath are both great, but I think the standing bath is still my favorite. Above all, I believe the biggest highlight here is the food. As before, we enjoyed French cuisine: local ingredients are carefully prepared, and you can savor refined flavors. Alcoholic drinks felt a bit pricey, but you can also enjoy delicious local beverages. The staff’s explanations are thorough as well, which adds to the experience. I think this Accommodation is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy Onsen and great meals in a quiet setting. I rated the Room 4 only because I felt that one of the logs used as a divider could be something an older guest like me might trip over; otherwise, I was very satisfied with the Room itself.

The True Charm of Myojinkan—Discovered Through a Multiple Night Stay

During our previous stay, both my wife and I were captivated by the charm of Myojinkan, and this time we returned for a long-awaited Multiple Night Stay to celebrate my wife’s birthday. I had always thought, “Someday I’d like to stay multiple nights,” and it exceeded our expectations by far. Over two days, we discovered the atmosphere of the Accommodation that we hadn’t noticed in just one night—the stillness of the forest, the murmur of the stream, the gentle flow of time… We even forgot to check the clock. Completely freed from everyday busyness, it was two days that truly Cleared both mind and body. Precisely because it was a Multiple Night Stay, we felt we could fully savor what Myojinkan cherishes: “the luxury of doing nothing.” This time, we enjoyed Japanese cuisine for the first time. The French meal last time was wonderful as well, but Japanese cuisine moved us in a different way. Each dish’s dashi was genuinely delicious, and every course carefully brought out the natural flavors of its ingredients—we found ourselves looking at each other again and again saying, “This is so good.” Rather than being flashy, it was deeply flavorful and delicate food that reminded us anew of how profound Japanese cuisine can be. Of course, the Onsen remained just as exceptional as ever. We soaked many times while admiring scenery that changed with each time of day, feeling healed in both body and mind. Above all else, your hospitality was once again warm and effortless, giving us a comforting sense that “we’ve come home.” No one ever seemed rushed during our stay; yet every detail was thoughtfully attended to. It made us realize once more that this Accommodation’s comfort comes from each staff member’s character. This is a special place for us—an Accommodation not merely “to stay,” but a place to restore oneself. We will return in another season to experience this forest air and Onsen again—along with your delicious food and everyone’s smiles. Thank you very much for everything.

Welcome back—our first time seeing you since 2009.

We visited during the Marine Day long weekend. I remembered staying at this Relais & Châteaux Ryokan before—the impact of the standing bath and the delicious meals—and had been hoping to return. From Kansai, it isn’t easy to get to Matsumoto, so it ended up being my first visit in 17 years. The interior has been improved in a very positive way, including the restaurant and lounge, and I was able to enjoy an even more comfortable and wonderful time than last time. Thank you very much. Driving a rental car is getting tougher now that I’m well past 60, but I’d love to visit again. By the way, your wall clock matched my wristwatch—I feel it was meant to be.

    Balance of Power

A long-established Ryokan nestled in a tranquil setting surrounded by nature.

Founded in 1931, it has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 2008. Reaching Tobira Onsen at an altitude of 1,050 m requires driving up a narrow mountain road, which initially made me uneasy, but once I arrived, an entirely different world—far removed from the city’s bustle—was waiting. With valet parking, I handed over my keys and quickly checked in in the lounge while enjoying tea. After an explanation of the Accommodation, I was shown to my Room. The design blends beautifully with nature, and the amenities are comfortable and well appointed. There are three Onsen baths (alkaline simple spring), and the standing bath called Setsugekka is especially outstanding. For dinner, I chose French rather than Japanese cuisine. Local ingredients are used throughout, and even for the pairing they select Nagano wines. The marriage was excellent and impressive; however, one drawback was how talkative some of the service staff were. They place each dish in front of you and then enthusiastically explain both the food and the wine at length. At top-tier restaurants, there is no excessive commentary about dishes or drinks; they simply answer questions appropriately when asked. The younger staff lacked knowledge and could not answer questions—and when even a sommelier did not come to respond, it made me suspect there may be no resident sommelier. Lengthy sales pitches delivered right before you eat may be a recent trend, but they take away from time that should be spent enjoying the food and wine. Chef Yoshihiro Murata of “Kikunoi” has also lamented recently that “there’s too much lecturing,” and I completely agree. At other Relais & Châteaux Ryokan in Japan, I have never felt this way. Even at hotels and restaurants overseas, explanations are concise and rarely turn into lectures. Myojinkan is superbly put together: harmonized with nature in every respect—the building, interiors, and all aspects of its Onsen facilities. The hospitality of the senior staff is also exceptional. The Japanese breakfast was delicious; when I said “the rice is wonderful,” I was told with pride: “We grow our rice here—I even helped plant it.” It was charming and left me feeling relaxed. I understand there are things you want to highlight—but please do so without being pushy so guests can enjoy their time to the fullest. This year as well I had an excellent experience staying eight consecutive nights at the same hotel in Sydney; overseas there are many hotels that offer that level of quality.

    Enjoy the space and cuisine

The Room is stylish in concept, with a refined atmosphere that feels a little different from a typical Ryokan. The interior design throughout the Accommodation shows careful attention to detail, and it’s pleasant to spend time simply taking in the space. Dinner was also high quality, with each dish thoughtfully prepared. The portions were generous yet never felt heavy, making it easy to enjoy the meal through to the end. The wide selection of non-alcoholic drinks was another plus. However, when I asked whether a specific type was available, the response felt somewhat curt—this was the only slight disappointment. An Accommodation where its dedication to creating a calm space and serving great food comes through quietly.

    Long time no see!!

It was my first stay in a while, and I was surprised by how much had changed. I relaxed in the welcome lounge, had a drink, and then headed to my Room. The framed bath atmosphere was as impressive as ever!!! The French cuisine also made great use of seasonal and local vegetables, and everything was delicious. Next time, I’d like to try the Japanese set meal again. The couple traveling with me were also very happy and said they’d like to come back—I'm glad I invited them! Late-night snacks were still available as always, and it was a pleasant surprise that the drinks in the refrigerator were free. It was a bit disappointing that the lantern from the Japan Hidden Hot Springs Association was gone. I’d love to visit again in every season.

I had a very comfortable stay.

I had been interested in this Accommodation for some time, but I hesitated because there were so many Rooms. Then I suddenly wanted to enjoy the Onsen, so I made a Reservation. The day before, the person who called from the Accommodation to Check Reservation was very pleasant, which made me even more excited for the trip. As expected, there were plenty of staff members, they were well trained, and everyone was attentive and considerate. We had a very comfortable stay. The meals were carefully prepared using local ingredients, and I could really feel the head chef’s dedication and effort. As someone who is quite particular about food, I enjoyed every dish. Even my husband, who usually eats lightly, had seconds of both rice and miso soup at breakfast. We look forward to visiting again next time. I definitely want to come back.

If possible, for a Multiple Night Stay.

Following our stay in February, we enjoyed another Multiple Night Stay this time. IKYU had a great-value Plan, so we made a Reservation for an upgraded Room. Our previous Room was wonderful as well, but this one was especially lovely—the semi-open-air bath was very spacious, and we could truly relax. We may choose this type from now on. For dining, we again had French cuisine for dinner on both nights and requested wine pairings. The dishes made the most of local Nagano ingredients, bringing out their natural flavors beautifully, and the pairings with carefully selected Nagano wines were outstanding. On the first night, a young gentleman who served us mentioned he had joined the company as a new graduate this year; his service was excellent and made our evening truly special. On the second night, service was provided by an experienced gentleman who is senior to the young staff member from the previous day. The meal was even more impressive than on the first night, and every wine pairing was different to match each dish—an exceptional experience overall. We couldn’t resist adding cheese (also from Nagano) and ended up ordering additional drinks as well. We hope to visit once more within this year. We would like to enjoy Myojinkan’s signature French cuisine again next time, so we plan to choose French dinners on both nights as well.

This is an Accommodation I’d love to stay at again.

It was a thoroughly satisfying stay in every way. Vivid fresh greenery filled the entire view from the room’s window, like looking at a perfectly framed painting. The Onsen offers three types of baths—a large public bath, a standing bath, and a lying-down bath. The scenery from the standing bath was especially beautiful, and I ended up soaking for as long as I liked without noticing the time. For meals, we enjoyed French cuisine for dinner and Japanese cuisine for breakfast; both were excellent. From the front desk to the restaurant, the staff’s service was friendly without being overly formal—very attentive and truly pleasant.

The Room and bath were excellent.

I relaxed away from everyday life at this quiet mountain Accommodation. The bath and bedding were excellent, and I slept very well. The sweets served in the Room we were shown to upon arrival were also delicious, but the relaxing music playing in the lobby had an unpleasantly sharp, high-pitched tone and ringing resonance that both my sister and I noticed. Since it’s right in the middle of nature, it would have been even better to be welcomed with quieter sounds.

A lush, carpet-like green view from the window.

In stark contrast to the severe winter last time, this visit welcomed us with dazzling greenery. I was first amazed by how different the same place can look from season to season. Standing by the window of our room, what spread out below was a carpet of green as far as the eye could see. From the lush trees, you can feel the mountain’s powerful breath, and I truly sensed I was right in the midst of nature filling itself with life. During the day it was warm enough to work up a sweat, yet mornings and evenings were pleasantly cool with crisp air—almost as if we could experience multiple shifts of season within a single day. For dinner we chose Japanese cuisine. This time we were able to enjoy wild boar and venison. There was none of the gaminess often associated with wild meat, and I was impressed by how carefully each dish was prepared. I happened to feel that the dashi tasted different from last time, so I asked—and learned it was made with pike conger (hamo). That explained it: a wonderfully gentle flavor that slowly spread across the palate with every bite. For breakfast we chose Western-style dishes. The theme was “green,” and it was a meat-free menu—but above all, the bagna càuda sauce served with the salad was outstanding; I couldn’t resist dipping my bread into it and finishing every last bit. At last, the much-loved green season has begun—comfortable, peaceful time flows by at an unhurried pace. From the head chef to all of your staff, everyone always treats us so warmly that words cannot express our gratitude. Thanks to you, I felt truly refreshed and returned home with renewed energy for everyday life. I’m already eager to plan my next visit whenever I can find time between work commitments. A place that makes you want to come back each time the seasons change—thank you again for another unforgettable stay.

I was able to stay at another Accommodation I had always dreamed of.

This was one of the Ryokan I had long wanted to stay at, and I finally had the chance. It’s not an inexpensive Ryokan for us, and it’s a place we hoped to visit for a special occasion or milestone. This time, after retiring from my long-time job, my wife made the Reservation so we could come here simply to enjoy the stay—no sightseeing. We arrived a little early, and two male staff members were waiting at the entrance. One checked our Reservation, took our luggage, and guided us to the lounge; the other valet-parked our car. Everything was extremely smooth. Check-in was completed in the lounge while we enjoyed complimentary tea and sweets—impeccably efficient service with no wasted steps. We were impressed from the moment we arrived. There are three bathing areas: a large public bath, a standing bath, and a reclining bath (we didn’t use the reclining bath), but each Onsen was excellent. The standing bath is especially famous and has been featured many times in travel magazines—I used it three times myself. There is also drink service; in particular, the large public bath offered Pocari Sweat, health drinks, Enmei-cha herbal tea, ice popsicles—an outstanding selection. What surprised me most was that during our stay I used both the large public bath and the standing bath three times each—and never once shared them with anyone else. It was a weekday in June so it wasn’t fully booked, but there were still around 10–15 parties staying. For meals we chose Japanese cuisine for both dinner and breakfast. Everything was flawless: dishes based on local production for local consumption that showcased not only great flavor but also presentation that delighted all five senses. Every staff member interacted with us at just the right distance; their hospitality deserves full marks by any standard of Accommodation service. The price is certainly not cheap—but it’s exactly the kind of Ryokan that makes you want to work hard, save up, and come back again. My wife even says that among all Ryokan and Hotel stays she has experienced so far—considering value for money as well—this is number one. About 15 years ago at a Hokuriku Ryokan I ended up talking about Onsen with a calm elderly gentleman I met in a large public bath. When I asked where he recommended most out of everywhere he had stayed, he said Tobira Onsen Myojinkan was his best ever—and since then it has been my goal to stay here too. I’ll keep working hard so we can return again (laugh). One note (not any fault of this Ryokan): from about 7 km out there are sections where the road becomes narrow enough that cars cannot pass each other easily; luxury cars or large vehicles may not be ideal. One request: leaves or insects sometimes drift into the open-air bath area of the large public bath—so it would be helpful if a small net could be placed nearby for guests to use.

    The hospitality is excellent.

We stayed in a suite, and the service was excellent. From arrival to departure, we were able to spend our time comfortably. As for the Room, there were a few points that concerned us. Since you have a projector, I think it would be better if the wall used for projection were smooth. The bathroom is very spacious, but the bathtub feels small considering the size of the space. Given that this is a fairly expensive Room, if these points could be improved, it would feel even more luxurious.

The soothing sound of a babbling stream and birdsong as you soak in the standing bath.

In the season of lush fresh greenery, I was able to Clear both body and mind. The standing bath featured in the images of this Accommodation was truly surrounded by silence, the sound of the river flowing, and birdsong—time for me to open up and feel free. Needless to say, the food was delicious. There was also a relaxed space where I could take my time, which supported a luxurious moment of being alone for a while away from my hectic everyday life. The staff (especially the women, haha) were wonderful conversationalists; beyond simply serving the dishes, they listened to me as well, and I ended up talking too much out of happiness—I may have gotten in the way of their work. Also, Treatment Room Natsura was excellent (though I fell asleep snoring). It was a great trip. Thank you very much.

A mystical Myojinkan surrounded by gods and forest

After driving through an extremely narrow mountain road, you arrive at the radiant Myojinkan Ryokan. I made a Reservation well in advance because I wanted a therapeutic Room. The view from both the window and the in-room bath felt like being deep in the forest. It was a spacious Room where I could truly relax. The Onsen I had been looking forward to (the standing bath) was wonderful, with an open-air feeling surrounded by trees. With views of the forest and stream, I soaked slowly and peacefully. Among all the Onsen Ryokan I have stayed at, this is my number one. One request: the slippers inside the building are hard to walk in, so I hope they can be improved. I will visit again. Thank you for your hospitality.
