The blessings of Zao, all to yourself. Handmade kaiseki cuisine, Onsen with a large bath made of granite and cypress, and a free private bath.

Even during Silver Week, we stayed at Tamaya Ryokan at a very reasonable rate. Near the front desk there is a large public bath, and a little farther away there is a private bath available 24 hours a day. Both were on the hotter side with a slight iron scent, had abundant free-flowing water, and left our skin feeling smooth after bathing—wonderful hot springs. The meals were homemade with an impressive variety of dishes. Everything was delicious. In particular, I tried “inago (grasshopper?) tsukudani” for the first time in my life. The slightly bitter taste and texture were truly unique... The croissants we bought as souvenirs were also lightly sweet and wonderfully flaky—highly recommended. After check-in, we also received bathing tickets for “Kami-no-Yu / Kotobuki-no-Yu,” so we took a short walk to Kami-no-Yu about two minutes from the ryokan. There was even a footbath outside, and it had the perfect hot-spring-town atmosphere. The next day after breakfast, we went for another casual stroll in our yukata and stopped by the café “Ensou.” The coffee and gateau chocolat we had there were exceptional. We relaxed thoroughly from check-in at 3:00 PM until check-out at 10:00 AM at Tamaya Ryokan. It was our first visit to Togatta Onsen; the town’s atmosphere was lovely and calming, and it quickly became one of our favorite places. It’s about a five-hour drive from home, but we definitely want to come again.
