Next to Rurikoin, in Yase, Kyoto—spend a night in Japan’s oldest steam-bath region.

Nestled at the foot of Mt. Hiei beside the clear waters of the Takano River, Yase is a tranquil corner of Kyoto. This area is known as Japan’s oldest steam-bathing site, where it is said that Prince Oama—wounded by an arrow during the Jinshin War—was healed in a kiln bath offered by local villagers. Named moksa, a Sanskrit word meaning “liberation,” our property features three fully private saunas, “Joan,” available by Reservation only, with cold baths filled with spring water from Mt. Hiei; the restaurant “MALA,” where Ohara vegetables and Omi beef are finished over a wood fire; and the lounge “Kikyorai,” overlooking a moss garden. Be steamed, surrounded by the scent of burning wood, and rest your eyes on the garden’s greenery— In Yase, just beyond Kyoto’s bustle, spend an evening gently unwinding both body and mind.

  • This was my second stay. The moment I stepped through the entrance, it felt like a different world. The meals were delicious, the staff’s hospitality and manners were excellent, and our Room was upgraded—everything was taken care of. I would love to stay again. I’m also looking forward to trying the open-air bath next time. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience.

  • By chance, we stayed the day before the Gion Festival Yamaboko Junko parade. Although we expected it to be crowded, there were actually fewer guests, and since we visited Rurikoin the next morning, it was very quiet. By chance, dinner also felt like a private booking with only our group. The dishes had a gentle seasoning that brought out the natural flavors of ingredients using Ohara vegetables. It was a wonderful lineup—almost like medicinal cuisine—featuring Omi beef, seasonal pike conger (hamo), Manganji chili peppers, Kamo eggplant, and more.We didn’t use the sauna, but since our Room was riverside, the view from the bathroom was great and very relaxing. The interior was Japanese-modern style, and it was impressive to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on a large-screen TV.Our only complaints were that the hair dryer was too heavy, and that applying makeup was difficult because the vanity mirror had indirect lighting from behind and wasn’t daylight-colored.All of the staff were friendly and approachable. We had a very comfortable stay at this Hotel—one that made us want to return. Thank you very much.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Accommodation for a Fresh Start

Our Accommodation is located in Yase, at the foot of Mt. Hiei, known as the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism. Since the Heian period, this area has been home to Japan’s oldest bathing facility, “Yase no Kamaburo,” said to have been offered by villagers to heal Prince Oama after he suffered an arrow wound during the Jinshin War; ever since, it has been cherished by nobles and samurai as a place to soothe and purify both body and mind.

“Moksa” is a Sanskrit word meaning “liberation” or “release.”

The name reflects our wish that, here in Yase, you can cleanse body and mind from the fatigue of modern life and feel renewed. Enjoy a steam bath using water from the clear Takano River, tea prepared through various rituals to circulate your energy, and a wood-fired restaurant featuring vegetables and wild herbs from Ohara. Embrace the power of Yase and spend time savoring renewal.
