Stay at the oldest soy sauce brewery in Nara Prefecture, featuring traditional architectural styles.

Maruto Soy Sauce, the oldest soy sauce brewery in Nara Prefecture, has been reborn as a soy sauce brewery where you can stay overnight. Founded in 1689, Maruto Soy Sauce was once a purveyor to the Imperial Household and even hosted members of the Imperial Family. However, after World War II, the brewery was forced to close due to the inability to procure satisfactory raw materials. Now, after 70 years, the brewery has been revived as a place to stay, using the microorganisms left in the brewery, locally sourced ingredients, and brewing methods uncovered from ancient documents. From traveler to brewer. We offer an experience where you can fully immerse yourself in the revival of soy sauce, local resources, and the timeless landscapes of Yamato.

  • I had been wanting to try a soy sauce pressing experience for a long time, so I came to visit. I joined casually, but the deeply moving stories you shared left a strong impression on me. Enjoying freshly pressed soy sauce with grilled kuzumochi was exceptionally delicious. I was also happy that there was a lounge where we could freely enjoy wine and coffee. The wine provided happened to be from one of my favorite wineries, which made me even happier. The meal was wonderful—each ingredient’s flavor really stood out, and everything was delicious. There were so many ways to enjoy the soy sauce that my excitement never faded. The Room was very clean and comfortable. All of the staff were incredibly kind, and I’m truly grateful for your hospitality. It was a truly luxurious time for both mind and body. Every time we enjoy the soy sauces we bought as souvenirs, we’re reminded of Maruto Soy Sauce, and my husband and I still talk about how much fun it was whenever it comes up. We’ll be back again.

  • The current head of Maruto Soy Sauce is said to be the 18th generation. A soy sauce brewing shed that has been in use since those days has been renovated into an Accommodation building, and the interior has been transformed into a modern, comfortable space. Above all, the in-house tour featuring a “soy sauce pressing experience” is truly special. Before pressing the soy sauce, the head shares the history of Maruto Soy Sauce. In fact, they once stopped making soy sauce during the postwar turmoil—but the current head successfully revived it. Enjoying dishes made primarily with that soy sauce while reflecting on this history makes them feel even more meaningful (though of course, you can simply enjoy them casually!).
