The oldest hot spring in San'in with a history of 1300 years - An inn with 13 rooms embodying the spirit of folk art.

Welcome to Iwai Onsen Iwaiya. This secluded hot-spring retreat, said to be the oldest in the San’in region, offers 100% free-flowing natural spring water throughout the property—even in the showers. In our 150-year-old, traditional three-story wooden inn, enjoy a distinctly Japanese atmosphere filled with folk-style furnishings and local wildflowers, along with the flavors of San’in cuisine for a truly relaxing stay. Tottori’s only Onsen member of “The Association to Protect Japan’s Secret Hot Springs.” Michelin Guide Kyoto-Osaka + Tottori 2019: Two Stars

  • This is the oldest hot spring in the San’in region, and it’s also a natural free-flowing Onsen—an absolute must for an Onsen enthusiast like me (laugh). The building does feel old because of its long history, but that’s part of its charm, and I hope it will continue for many years to come. The meals were a bit too much for me as an older guest; I would have preferred smaller portions with higher quality. The staff were wonderful. Thank you very much.

  • The property offers a standing bath, a lounge, and a microbus tour for firefly viewing and stargazing, making it great value for money.

Enjoy coffee in a one-of-a-kind Mingei cup, each with its own unique color and shape—where the beauty of everyday use resides.

The San’in region—Tottori—is home to many pottery studios, each producing distinctive, highly functional pieces that have become synonymous with Tottori folk crafts. More than something to admire, they are meant to be used and enjoyed—the true “beauty of utility.” Coffee enjoyed from a mingei cup is even more appealing.
