A classic Hotel with just six rooms, once renowned as Kyoto’s guesthouse.

Since its construction in 1909 by tobacco magnate Kichibei Murai, Chourakukan has welcomed a wide range of guests from Japan and abroad as a place of warm hospitality. From some of Japan’s most renowned figures to royalty and ambassadors from around the world, distinguished visitors gathered here to spend glittering moments in an atmosphere of refined elegance. And now, 110 years later. Though times have changed, the echoes of its splendid history remain, and you will be embraced by the same sense of fulfillment that has endured since then.

  • Using aromatic vegetables, fish, and meat from the Kyoto area, each ingredient is prepared and served with the utmost care to preserve its natural fragrance, flavor, and texture in the best possible way. The chef’s evolving craft was truly impressive. I was also moved by the sommelier’s sincere dedication to wine. The cuisine feels perfectly suited to this one-of-a-kind Meiji-era mansion dining experience in Japan.

  • I first stayed here when I was 23, and about 13 years later I returned with my husband. It had been a long time since I’d been to Kyoto, so the moment we arrived at Chourakukan, I felt relieved. The female staff member who guided us was very pleasant and kindly took some wonderful photos for us.The Room was clean, and in the bathroom, the scent of Chidoriya soap brought back memories and filled me with happiness. After getting ready for dinner, we enjoyed an excellent French meal at Le Chene. As I was pregnant, you were very considerate in many ways—thank you so much.Breakfast was also delicious. We bought cookies as souvenirs, and they were a big hit with both my mother-in-law and my mother.Next time, when our child is older, we would love to visit again with our parents.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Stroll-Style Auberge

Stroll-Style Auberge

Hotel Chorakukan, surrounded by the greenery of Higashiyama, is a tranquil auberge filled with the scent of trees—so peaceful you may forget you are in the city. Dinner is a full-course French meal served at “Le Chêne” on the first floor of the main building. And here, you can enjoy three kinds of “strolling” experiences—wandering at leisure and letting your mind roam.

Nearby Sightseeing Tours
1. Nearby Sightseeing

Located in the heart of Higashiyama by Maruyama Park, you can stroll to Kyoto’s historic and cultural landmarks as if on a leisurely walk. The neighborhood within walking distance of Chourakukan offers a compact collection of seasonal beauty, history, and tradition—so much so that the entire area feels like an open-air museum. Kyoto is best experienced on foot, and around Chourakukan you’ll find the city’s authentic charm at every turn.

Park Stroll
2. Park Stroll

Stroll through Maruyama Park as if it were your private garden. Chourakukan is located within Maruyama Park, a strolling-style garden of approximately 90,000 m² created in 1913 by the 7th-generation landscape gardener Ogawa Jihei in the heart of Gion. Step outside Chourakukan and you are already in the park. The famous weeping cherry tree of Maruyama Park is right before your eyes. The illuminated blossoms seen from your room at night are simply enchanting. Here, you can savor the changing seasons—and the subtle shifts throughout the day—with all five senses.

Explore the Property
3. Getting Around the Property

Savor the Main Building of Chourakukan, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property that symbolizes the Meiji era. The Main Building of Chourakukan is a structure truly worthy of the word “stroll-through.” As you explore, you will encounter stories woven into its history and culture. Rococo-style S-shaped chairs and maple washstands, among other furnishings also designated as Important Cultural Properties, continue to blend seamlessly into the space today. If you wish, our staff will be happy to guide you in detail. To commemorate Chourakukan’s 100th anniversary, Accommodation guests only may also view the normally closed “Onari Room.”
