Founded in 1627. A long-established Ryokan beloved by renowned writers and artists.

A 400-year-old traditional Ryokan nestled at the foot of a sacred and mystical forest. Three elegant Sukiya-style detached buildings harmoniously blend with modern architecture, all set within a beautiful Japanese garden that reflects the changing seasons. Strolling through the strolling-style garden, you can imagine the literary figures such as Mori Ōgai and Kitahara Hakushū who once stayed here. From the panoramic bath, enjoy distant views of Mount Sanuki Fuji or take in the charming streetscape of Kotohira's temple town. Refresh your spirit and rediscover the delicate sense of Japanese beauty and harmony that may have been forgotten amidst urban life’s hustle and bustle.

  • My family of three stayed in Sansuikaku’s Japanese-Western Room E.Since the Accommodation is located at the foot of a mountain, there are significant elevation changes throughout the property, including the parking area. They provided a Shuttle Service between the parking area and the Accommodation. The Room was new, and both the view and the open-air bath were wonderful. I also liked that the door closes slowly on its own. I felt so happy relaxing with a cup of coffee. The private open-air bath was clean and very nice as well.Dinner at the dining venue was delicious. The beef and matcha shiruko were especially good—I ate too much. Breakfast felt light, perhaps because it was summer; I wouldn’t have minded something a bit more classic. All staff members were pleasant, but after checkout I felt slightly rushed during the Shuttle Service to the parking area (perhaps they wanted to combine rides with other guests). We did want to leave promptly as well, so I would have appreciated being asked, “We can take you right now—what would you prefer?”As an aside, after returning home I learned that my favorite celebrity had stayed here too, which made it feel even more special. Thank you very much for taking care of us!

  • The car parking area surprised me a bit, but once I was guided into the Hotel, the maze-like path from the entrance to the lobby made sense—it felt calm and well designed. The Room came with an open-air bath, so I was able to enjoy a wonderfully open and elegant time. Both dinner and breakfast were completely satisfying and reminded me how great Japanese cuisine is. The Awaji beef roast beef was outstanding, and I’m already craving the fish-ball hot pot, braised pork, firefly squid, and more. Breakfast was excellent as well. It’s definitely worth staying at least once.

Garden
Sukiya-style detached house

Sukiya-style detached house

The detached houses scattered throughout the garden of Kotohira Kadan, a Property established in the 4th year of Kan'ei, serve as symbolic representations of the inn. Various highlights are featured, including hanging scrolls of Kanzan and Jittoku, paintings by Komuro Suiun, and Edo-period fusuma paintings. These detached houses, where literary figures and artists such as Mori Ōgai, Kitahara Hakushū, and Yosano Akiko stayed during their visits from the Meiji to early Shōwa periods, offer a serene setting. As you gaze upon the garden, which vividly reflects the seasons with plum and cherry blossoms in early spring, fresh greenery in early summer, autumn foliage, and a snowy landscape in winter, you may find yourself envisioning the scenes of Kotohira once depicted by these literary greats. It might even feel as though you've traveled back in time.

Shogetsu Terrace

Fujimidai, Shougetsu Terrace, Sansuikaku

Three accommodation wings are situated around the garden: Fujimidai, Shogetsu Terrace, and Sansuikaku. Each offers uniquely styled rooms. Fujimidai features a variety of room types to suit the purpose of your trip, including Japanese-style rooms, special Japanese-Western rooms, and rooms with open-air baths. The rooms at Shogetsu Terrace are spacious Western-style rooms with views of the temple town and Sanuki Fuji. Additionally, the rooms at Sansuikaku, renovated in 2019, allow guests to enjoy the charming scenery of the Japanese garden, which changes its expression with the seasons.

  • Sanuki Mannou National Government Park “Autumn Color Festival” Now On!

As autumn arrives, Sanuki Manno National Government Park is transformed into a vivid tapestry of seasonal color.
From September 12, the “Autumn! Color Festival” fills the park with around 170,000 cosmos flowers across six varieties, while about 6,000 kochia plants gradually shift in color as the season deepens.
Depending on when you visit, you can enjoy different autumn scenes—from fields of pink and yellow cosmos to kochia turning from green to brilliant red.

During the festival, there will also be a “Digital Stamp Rally” you can enjoy as you explore the park, and a “Hanaemi Photo Contest,” which you can enter by posting your photos on Instagram. Why not capture your autumn memories and join in?
There will also be plenty of hands-on activities for families. Limited-date workshops are planned, along with events featuring inflatable attractions such as water balloons and big slides. There’s even more for kids to enjoy, including an insect class and a “Vehicle Festival” showcasing police cars, crane trucks, and more.

As autumn progresses and the kochia turns bright red, the scenery becomes even more breathtaking. Why not spend some time enjoying colorful blooms and the changing seasons in the crisp autumn breeze?

This fall, consider pairing your trip to Kagawa with a visit to Sanuki Manno National Government Park to experience its beautiful autumn colors.
