A nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property restaurant Ryokan, operating since the late Edo period in the secluded retreat of Hida Takayama.
Hida-Furukawa, known as “Takayama’s inner retreat,” is a charming town lined with traditional townhouses, white-walled storehouses, and the Setogawa River where carp swim. We have been operating this Accommodation for over 180 years. Our Meiji-era building, showcasing the craftsmanship of Hida artisans, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Our 18 guest rooms are spread across three buildings: Shogetsuro (a merchant-style building built in 1905), Kogetsuro (a sukiya-style building built in the early Showa period), and Kangetsuro (built in the Heisei era) overlooking Honkoji Temple and the Araki River. Each offers its own distinct atmosphere. Enjoy a sense of closeness between people unlike in the city, and take time to reconnect with yourself.
It was a quiet Onsen Accommodation that was perfect for the town of Hida-Furukawa. Everything was wonderful, and it’s rare that I’ve been able to spend time so comfortably. If you ask what it was— everything! The only disappointment was that I could hear footsteps from the Room on the third floor above, which bothered me until late at night. Next time I stay, I plan to request a Room on an upper floor. It’s an Accommodation I definitely want to stay at again next year.
This is a Japanese-style suite reached by stairs. As you enter, folk-art furniture sits on the wooden-floored entry area; open the vermilion-lacquered double-sided kumiko shoji framed by carefully crafted natural-wood pillars and rails, and you step into a tatami Room scented with fresh rush. Seasonal hanging scrolls and flowers, and a large low table complete the setting. From the wide north-facing window, you can see the river surface and the temple’s great roof. By the window are a box hibachi used as a table and a small rocking chair. At the back of the south-side wooden-floored area, it seems an extension has been added: a large, bright bath area (a thick, oversized hinoki cypress tub big enough for about four people to soak together, washing space, footbath, and washbasin). Through the glass door you can view mountain ridges; open it to step onto the veranda and feel the breeze. The water flows continuously 24/7 despite concerns about humidity affecting wooden construction. Everything is kept very clean and well maintained—an indulgent bathing experience. After finishing an excellent meal at a calm small dining room table facing the garden, we returned to find our futons laid out. A bed would be easier, but it would probably feel out of place in this Room. I adjusted the futon orientation to my preference. In addition to air conditioning there is also a gas fan heater, so it should stay warm even in winter. Renovation work seems to be progressing in stages, and I’m looking forward to seeing newly refurbished Rooms.

It has been about 180 years since the first Sangoro moved from Yao to Hida-Furukawa in the late Edo period and began operating an Accommodation. From a rice shop to a merchant’s inn, then a traditional restaurant, we have evolved with the times and are now a restaurant Ryokan. Part of the building is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Rebuilt after the Great Furukawa Fire of 1904, this structure—crafted by Hida carpenters—invites you to enjoy its beauty deepened by age.
For guests arriving by car
As our parking area is located at the rear of the property, we will take your car keys at the front entrance.
Please pass our large parking lot, turn left at the end of the road, and you will find the entrance along the river.
As this is a narrow, traditional road, if you are arriving in a large vehicle or feel unsure, please call us when you are nearby (0577-73-2121).
Yatsusankan is a long-established Ryokan founded in the late Edo period, with a history of about 180 years. The property features traditional wooden architecture, including buildings registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan, and we welcome guests while preserving its unique character.
Due to the nature of the building, there are many stairs and steps, and noise from upper/lower floors or neighboring rooms may carry. We appreciate your understanding as a characteristic of a wooden structure.
About meals
The latest dinner start time is 19:00. If you will arrive after 18:00, please be sure to contact us in advance. If you arrive after 19:00, we may not be able to serve dinner.
Please inform us of any food allergies or ingredients you cannot eat at the time of your Reservation. Requests made on the day may not be accommodated. As all dishes are prepared in the same kitchen, we cannot guarantee complete removal of allergens. We are unable to accommodate highly restrictive diets such as vegan or gluten-free; thank you for your understanding.
About children’s stays
To maintain a quiet stay for all guests, we do not accept stays with children under 6 years old.
