A nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property restaurant Ryokan, operating since the late Edo period in the secluded retreat of Hida Takayama.

Known as the “inner retreat of Takayama,” Hida-Furukawa is a charming town lined with traditional townhouses, white-walled storehouses, and the Setogawa River where carp swim. Our Accommodation has been welcoming guests here for over 180 years. This Meiji-era building, showcasing the craftsmanship of Hida artisans, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Our 18 guest rooms are spread across three buildings, each with its own character: Shogetsuro, a merchant-style building (built in 1905); Kogetsuro, built in the Sukiya style (early Showa period); and Kangetsuro (built in the Heisei era), offering views of Honkoji Temple and the Araki River from the front. Enjoy a slower pace and meaningful time to reconnect with yourself—far from city life.

  • This is a Japanese-style suite reached by stairs. As you enter, folk-art furniture sits on the wooden-floored entry area; open the vermilion-lacquered double-sided kumiko shoji framed by carefully crafted natural-wood pillars and rails, and you step into a tatami Room scented with fresh rush. Seasonal hanging scrolls and flowers, and a large low table complete the setting. From the wide north-facing window, you can see the river surface and the temple’s great roof. By the window are a box hibachi used as a table and a small rocking chair. At the back of the south-side wooden-floored area, it seems an extension has been added: a large, bright bath area (a thick, oversized hinoki cypress tub big enough for about four people to soak together, washing space, footbath, and washbasin). Through the glass door you can view mountain ridges; open it to step onto the veranda and feel the breeze. The water flows continuously 24/7 despite concerns about humidity affecting wooden construction. Everything is kept very clean and well maintained—an indulgent bathing experience. After finishing an excellent meal at a calm small dining room table facing the garden, we returned to find our futons laid out. A bed would be easier, but it would probably feel out of place in this Room. I adjusted the futon orientation to my preference. In addition to air conditioning there is also a gas fan heater, so it should stay warm even in winter. Renovation work seems to be progressing in stages, and I’m looking forward to seeing newly refurbished Rooms.

  • Everyone was very courteous, and although it wasn’t an expensive Plan, it was truly a wonderful Accommodation. This was my second stay; last time was just after COVID, so I didn’t see any international guests, but this time there were many. It’s popular with international guests as well. Both dinner and breakfast were full of seasonal flavors and absolutely delicious. The dining area and baths were quiet, and I was able to relax and unwind.

For over 180 years, we have been operating an Accommodation in Hida Furukawa, in the satoyama countryside of Hida.

It has been about 180 years since the first Sangoro moved from Yao to Hida-Furukawa in the late Edo period and began running an Accommodation. From a rice shop to a merchant inn, then a traditional restaurant, we have evolved with the times and are now a restaurant Ryokan. Part of the building is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Rebuilt after the Great Furukawa Fire of 1904, this structure—crafted by Hida carpenters—invites you to enjoy its beauty deepened by age.
