Our cuisine features kaiseki that reflects Kyoto’s annual events and the changing seasons. This is a perfect Accommodation no matter when you visit.It was Kyoto in extreme heat, but thanks to your thoughtful care in many ways, we had a wonderful time.The pike conger is a must in this season; it is an additional-order dish, but highly recommended.We are planning to visit again in autumn.
ぜんまいさむらい 8/3/2026I visited Hiiragiya again. I had made a Reservation for a Room with a bath and toilet, but I was first shown to a Room without them. It was still very comfortable, but when I asked to Check Reservation, I was told there had been a mistake, and you kindly arranged for me to stay in the Room associated with author Yasunari Kawabata. Thank you for your thoughtful care.Once again, I enjoyed Kyoto’s summer flavors—chilled edamame soup topped with sea urchin, pike conger sashimi, grilled tilefish with crispy scales, jellied soft-shelled turtle broth, Kamo eggplant with sesame sauce, and more—then fully enjoyed Yoiyama and fell asleep thinking of Mr. Kawabata before continuing on to the Gion Festival.Kyoto is changing little by little, but this is the beauty of Japan—and the spirit of Japanese hospitality—that I hope will be passed on to future generations.

Introduction of the Accommodation
In Kyoto, I always stay at Hiiragiya, and I have long been familiar with the bedding patterned with holly leaves. On the night I arrive in Kyoto, watching a maid lay a clean white cover over a softly dyed holly-patterned quilt makes me feel at ease in this familiar Accommodation. This is all the more true when I stop by Kyoto on my way back from a long journey. The holly motif appears not only on bedding and yukata, but also on ceramics such as teacups and rice bowls, and on items like sewing boxes and wastebaskets—yet it is never showy. And these furnishings remain unchanged through ten or twenty years, through wartime and postwar alike; it seems they prepared an impressive number of them. This unobtrusiveness, and this unchanging quality, are what make Hiiragiya in the old capital so wonderful. It has always had stature, yet it has never been imposing. Kyoto has long been known for its fine inns that welcomed travelers warmly and put them at ease, but that too is changing. Hiiragiya’s quiet restraint now feels rare. In Kyoto’s late-autumn showers—and again during the rainy season—sitting at Hiiragiya watching and listening to the rain brings back a nostalgic stillness of Japan. My wife especially misses Hiiragiya’s spotless cypress-grain bath tub. I love traveling and have long made a habit of writing while staying at inns, but there is no Accommodation with more memories for me than Hiiragiya. The historic wing is a wooden sukiya-style building that retains the charm of the late Edo period through the Showa era. It is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Enjoy the timeless beauty and history of Kyoto, the ancient capital. The new wing is a Japanese-style space that incorporates traditional natural materials and craftsmanship while embracing modern design. Even within its contemporary feel, you can still sense Japan’s traditional beauty.
